ON QUALIFYING:
“We made improvements. We were borderline on making the Round 2 to Round 3 cut there, but good job by James (Small, lead engineer) is filling in for Luke (Lambert, crew chief) right now. Luke is home just had a baby, so that is cool. Good qualifying effort like you said for the Caterpillar Chevrolet. Closest we’ve been in a while so that was good. But definitely want to be up front with all those Chase guys. It’s been a disappointing year because of that, but we’ve still got the opportunity to make some big gains here the last nine races.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–New Hampshire–Qualifying

TEAM SUMMIT RACING GOES FOR WIN 16 IN QUEST FOR CHAMPIONSHIP

TEAM SUMMIT RACING GOES FOR WIN 16 IN QUEST FOR CHAMPIONSHIP

St. Louis, MO (September 21, 2016) – Team Summit Racing Pro Stock team heads to the AAA NHRA Midwest Nationals this weekend with a comfortable points lead. Drivers Jason Line and Greg Anderson want to keep it that way as they compete for the NHRA Mello Yello Championship.

After winning the first race of the NHRA Countdown to the Championship in Charlotte on Sunday, Line and Anderson, not taking anything for granted, were back at the track testing their Chevrolet Camaros on Monday

“We have three races in a row and not a lot of time to test. This was a golden opportunity since we live here. It’s close, convenient and we won’t have a chance after two or three races to get testing in,” Anderson said. “The competition right now is really close. We’re hoping to gain a performance edge going into St. Louis.”

Line has eight wins this season and Anderson has seven. With only five races left, both drivers want to finish strong and win the NHRA Pro Stock Championship.

“We have run well all year and the first part of the season we were faster than the other cars. To not win the championship would certainly hurt,” Line said. “This is a team effort. I want to win and I’ll be happy if Greg or Bo (Butner) wins.”

The AAA NHRA Midwest Nationals is a home event for Springfield, Illinois-based Nitro Funny Car driver Tim Wilkerson. Expect to see a lot of his die-hard fans, known as “Wilk’s Warriors,” at the track this weekend.

“We’re happy to be that close to home and excited to see all our friends and do the best that we can to keep advancing rounds,” Wilkerson said. “But it’s going to be stressful, too. Brian Stewart’s running, and my son Daniel will be working on his car. Dick Levi is going to bring all his closest friends. We want to win for all of our fans.”

ROBERT HIGHT LOOKING TO ST. LOUIS FOR CHAMPIONSHIP BUMP

ST LOUIS (September 21, 2016) — In 2009 Robert Hight used a race win at the Countdown opening race in Charlotte to propel him to his first NHRA Funny Car championship. The 2005 NHRA Auto Club Road to the Future Rookie of the Year raced from the No. 10 spot to the championship on the strength of that win as well as two other wins over the final six races. That year Hight followed up his Carolina Nationals win with a first round defeat at the AAA Insurance Midwest Nationals. Last weekend Hight raced to the quarterfinals but the 37-time winner is not worried about slipping out of the Countdown conversation.

“I think if you can average semifinal finishes throughout the Countdown you should be in a position to have a shot at the championship when we roll into Pomona for the Auto Club Finals. Three of the last five Countdown races are sponsored by the Auto Club so I know I will see a lot of friendly faces and support. This weekend in St. Louis is a race I have won before and feel good about getting to. We tested on Monday (in Charlotte) and made some really quick runs in the heat and cooler conditions,” said Hight. Continue reading John Force Racing–St. Louis Advance

Motorcraft/Quick Lane Team Riding High Heading Into New Hampshire

September 21, 2016

Last weekend at the Chicagoland Speedway, Ryan Blaney, his crew chief Jeremy Bullins and the entire Motorcraft/Quick Lane crew showed the NASCAR world that they’re capable of being legitimate contenders for race victories.

This weekend they’re looking to back that up with another strong run at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

At the end of Sunday’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 in Chicago, Bullins made the call to leave Blaney on the track on older tires, a decision that put him out front for an Overtime run to the checkered flag. Blaney nailed the restart, despite his worn tires, and led for a time before the newer tires of his competitors prevailed and he finished fourth. Champion Troy Coughlin Sr. vows to continue Pro Mod title fight
ST. LOUIS (Sept. 21) — The odds aren’t in favor of JEGS.com driver Troy Coughlin Sr. repeating as champion of the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Series, but Coughlin, who races in the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals this weekend at Gateway Motorsports Park, vows to continue the fight.

“We’ll fight until the end of this thing,” Coughlin said. “We’ll fight until the NHRA drives us out, we run out of money, or we have a health issue.”

Coughlin and his team of crew chief Steve Petty and crewmembers Mike Rees and Kyle Pettis have battled all season, earning one victory in the competitive Pro Mod Series and contending in all eight races to date this season. Five-time champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. continues to perform at a high level

Five-time champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. continues to perform at a high level
ST. LOUIS (Sept. 21) — One of the reasons JEGS.com ace Jeg Coughlin Jr. has had such a brilliant career is his ability to maintain his high level of performance under all circumstances. Even when his race car was not at the top of the speed chart, Coughlin was able to focus and do his job.

That’s been the case this season, as his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart hasn’t always been the fastest. But Coughlin hopes that he and his Elite Motorsports team can continue to perform as well as possible, including this weekend at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park.

“We know what we’ve got under the hood, we know what we’ve got with the cars,” Coughlin said. “We need to get out and just continually try to not reinvent the wheel. We need to make good, solid runs; give the tuning group on the engine side an opportunity to clean some things up and maybe clean some things up with the chassis side. That will allow me to get behind the wheel and do what I do.”

Coughlin is a five-time Pro Stock champion who has 58 victories in his illustrious career, including two in St. Louis (in 2009 and 1998).

“I’m optimistic going into the weekend,” Coughlin said. “I think if we are on our best behavior we can be a top-eight car coming into the field on Sunday. We’ve seen a lot of strange things happen this year, evidenced with my partner and teammate Erica Enders missing the cut in Charlotte.

“We won’t take anything for granted. We’ll prepare hard, we’ll prepare smart, and see if we can’t get out and shake it up in St. Louis.”

Coughlin sits ninth in the Pro Stock points standings after one event in the six-race Countdown to the Championship.

“St. Louis is a fun race to have in the Countdown,” Coughlin said. “We get a good fan base out of the area there and love performing. We look to carry on the momentum that we did the week before in Charlotte in the first race to the Countdown.”

Coughlin’s wife, Samantha, will race a JEGS.com dragster in Super Comp in St. Louis, marking a three-car effort that also includes Pro Mod title contender Troy Coughlin Sr.

Pro Stock qualifying sessions are scheduled for 2:45 and 5:15 p.m., Friday, and 1:45 and 4:15 p.m., Saturday. Eliminations start at noon, Sunday. FOX Sports 1 will broadcast qualifying action from 6 to 7 p.m., Friday. Eliminations will air live from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday. (All times listed in CT).

‘No quit in this pit’ is battle cry for defending two-time world champ Erica Enders
ST. LOUIS (Sept. 21) — A season ago, Pro Stock superstar Erica Enders was putting a stranglehold on her second straight Mello Yello world championship with a runner-up finish at the annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals, which takes place again this weekend at Gateway Motorsports Park. It was her fourth consecutive final-round showing and ninth of 11 she would amass during the year.

This year it’s a different story. Enders once again is part of the Countdown to the Championship, but this time she’s 10th in the 10-car field and coming off her first DNQ in six years. Continue reading ‘No quit in this pit’ is battle cry for defending two-time world champ Erica Enders

Follow A Dream/Permatex TA/FC Team Reaches Quarter Finals of NHRA Carolina Nationals

MARSTONS MILLS, Massachusetts (September 20, 2016) – Only 10 feet kept the Follow A Dream/Permatex Top Alcohol Funny Car from advancing to the semifinals of this past weekend’s NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina.

In the quarterfinals, driver Phil Burkart squared off with D.J. Cox. Burkart, in his first season behind the wheel of the Follow A Dream Chevrolet Camaro, got a great start with a 0.039 reaction time to Cox’s 0.061 effort.

But Cox rallied back to catch Burkart just before half-track and continued on to the victory and to advance to the semifinals.

And that’s where that 10 feet margin (0.0248 seconds) came in, as that was the ultimate difference between Cox’s winning effort (5.585 seconds at 265.33 mph) to Burkart’s showing (5.631 seconds at 263.92 mph). Scelzi Nearly Captures First Victory of Season at Keller Auto Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – HANFORD, Calif. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi was so close to earning his first victory of the season last Saturday that he could almost taste it.

Unfortunately, a mechanical problem appeared just after the midpoint of the feature at Keller Auto Speedway that left Scelzi and car owner Nick McColloch with a DNF.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t win because I felt like that was our race to win,” Scelzi said. “On the other hand with it being our first night in that car, we got better every time we hit the track. All in all, I can’t be too upset with it. I want to thank Nick for the opportunity.”

The night began with Scelzi qualifying seventh quickest. Continue reading Scelzi Nearly Captures First Victory of Season at Keller Auto Speedway

Giovanni Scelzi Charges From 12th to Runner-Up Result at Keller Auto Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – HANFORD, Calif. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi tied his career-best sprint car finish last Saturday at Keller Auto Speedway.

Scelzi piloted a Roth Motorsports owned race car during the event, which began with a 12th place qualifying result.

“The track was really tricky in qualifying,” he said. “We talked about what we wanted to do. I felt like I made good laps. I executed what we talked about, but we were a little off. It was not good to start that far behind the eight ball.”

Scelzi rebounded from the slow start to the night. He placed second in a heat race to start the main event on the outside of the sixth row.

“We had a really, really good car where I could maneuver through the field,” he said. “It was pretty gradual. There was a long green flag run and we got up to second when we had a restart with five laps to go. I had one shot at the leader, but it wouldn’t have been a clean slider so I didn’t go for it.”

Scelzi finished with a runner-up result, which marked his 18th top five of the season. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/f7J7lRzVvzw.

“I feel like I’m racing people better,” he said. “The first few times when I got podiums I started toward the front and I didn’t have to pass anybody. Coming from 12th to second was a good confidence boost.

“I want to thank Dennis and Teresa Roth for the opportunity and Eric, Cory, Brent and Todd for their help.”

Scelzi is scheduled to return to his family owned sprint car this Friday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif.
