The championship contenders for the NTT IndyCar Series Championship – including Team Chevy drivers Josef Newgarden, No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet, and Simon Pagenaud, No. 22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet – met with members of the media Friday at Portland International Raceway. Transcript below:

THE MODERATOR: Let’s start with the championship contenders. We’ll lead off with the championship leader, Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden.

Josef, you got a 38-point lead on your teammate. 38 points is an advantage that hasn’t been overcome since 2008, at least. You feel comfortable, confident?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: What about (Scott) Dixon? I feel like that was way more than 38 points. I felt like I was 85 with two to go. Where was he in the finale?

THE MODERATOR: Are you comfortable?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: No, no, absolutely not (laughter). Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR–Grand Prix of Portland

DANIEL HEMRIC, NO. 8 CATERPILLAR CAMARO ZL1 Media Breakout Session Highlights:

TIRES HAVE BEEN A LITTLE BIT CONSERVATIVE THIS YEAR. TIRES ARE ALWAYS IMPORTANT HERE, BUT DO YOU THINK THEY ARE EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAN THEY HAVE BEEN THIS SEASON?
“I wish I could give you a true reading on that, but I don’t think I ran more than three or four laps at a time so far. We’ve been really trying to work on the balance. For some of the guys that have ran longer runs, they seemed to have a moment to fall off like it always does here, so tires are going to be just as crucial as they always are. It’s going to be interesting. I think we won’t really know how the tires are going to behave until we get to watch the Xfinity race, see how the rubber lays. Luckily, we have a car with Tyler Reddick in it. Those guys can communicate with us and see what they find is good for managing tire wear. Hopefully we can kind of lean on them some. But this is the same tire we raced at Chicago so we have some trends with that particular tire.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Darlington–Daniel Hemric

THE 2021 NASCAR CUP SCHEDULE IS EXPECTED TO SHAKE-UP A BIT IN 2021. SHOULD INDIANAPOLIS A TRACK BEST SUITED FOR NASCAR AND SHOULD IT STAY ON THE SCHEDULE?
“Just from my own point of view it would be a bummer not to go to the Brickyard with the history of that race track. I guess you could argue the fact that they have a road course, and road course racing is pretty entertaining for Cup cars. Maybe that’s an option. I just feel like in my heart of hearts, we need to go to the Brickyard and race.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Darlington–Jimmie Johnson

THE SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT HAS BEEN FANTASTIC. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT HAS GONE INTO THAT?
“It has been fun, for sure. I think I’m pretty shy and keep to myself at times, so I had to get into character a little bit there during that photo shoot. It’s been fun to do. We have one picture per day for the whole week, so that’s been neat. It’s been a lot of fun.”

DO YOU FEEL MORE POWERFUL WHEN YOU HAVE THE OUTFIT OR UNIFORM ON?
“When I have the wig, mustache, aviators and Tim Richmond fire suit, I’m just not me anymore (laughs). I guess in character would be the best way to say that. It took me a minute for sure during the photo shoot. I was like man this is awkward, but it was pretty cool.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Darlington–Alex Bowman

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 CLOVER CAMARO ZL1, met with media to discuss what Darlington Raceway means to him, hitting a positive stride leading into the Playoffs, what he can apply from his dominate run at Darlington last year, and more. Full Transcript:

LOOKING AHEAD TO NEXT WEEK, THERE’S ALWAYS DISCUSSION ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS AND WHETHER NASCAR DESERVES A DATE GOING THERE. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON INDIANAPOLIS AND ITS PLACE ON THE SCHEDULE? DOES IT STILL HAVE RELEVANCE IN NASCAR?
“I don’t know. I mean as long as I’ve been alive, they’ve been going there. So, for me, yeah, I think we should be racing there. Obviously, the racing isn’t the most exciting there, but it’s still a historical place that I always enjoy going to, getting to be in the garage area and going around the same race track that some legends have. I don’t really know how else to answer that, but I think it deserves to be on the schedule.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Darlington–Kyle Larson

Three-time U.S. Nationals winner Cruz Pedregon is ready to secure a Top 10 Countdown spot by “laying it all out there” at the team’s home track in Indianapolis. “This is such an important race to us, as well as to all the other drivers and teams, because it can turn your season around with the points-and-a-half scoring at Indy,” Cruz says. “Our focus is on the upcoming race, and performing well this Labor Day weekend will make it possible for us to keep our eyes on the Championship prize.”

Crew Chief Glen Huszar believes the Snap-on Dodge® is “right there” in regards to tuning and getting the car ready for this critical race, saying, “We have a great Funny Car, terrific team and a two-time world champion driver; we’ve just had a few hiccups recently we plan to overcome this weekend.”

Cruz says of the Big Go™, “This is quite literally ‘go time,’ and we have a good understanding of what we need to do to make the best use of the weekend’s extra qualifying round and demonstrate what this car and team can do.”

To celebrate the six-day racing event, Cruz will host an Open House for racing fans in the team’s Brownsburg shop located at 462 Southpoint Circle, Suite A, Thursday, August 29 from 5 – 8 p.m. Plans are to have 20 professional drivers signing autographs and 50+ show cars. Five-time U.S. Nationals champion Jeg
Coughlin Jr. says Indy still a magical place
INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 27) — It would be easy to think “goosebump moments” are a thing of the past for a veteran drag racer like Jeg Coughlin Jr., whose collected six NHRA championships and 81 victories in his illustrious career. But that’s simply not the case.

“I get them every time I drive through the gates,” Coughlin said, referring to Lucas Oil Raceway, site of this weekend’s 65th annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals. “It’s a magical place and our sport’s biggest race. There is huge emotion and an elevated drive to win. I don’t think that will ever change for me.

“Being so close to Ohio this is like a home track for us. I remember coming here as a kid when Dad was racing and then supporting my brothers here. There was a time when I knew every inch of the grounds, from the BMX track to the front office, campgrounds, tunnels and all the snack bars. It’s a very familiar and comfortable place for me.”
