Grand Prix of Portland is penultimate race of season

DETROIT (August 28, 2019) – After winning the NTT P1 Award for the July 14 race on the streets of Toronto, Simon Pagenaud said “it’s time to shine.”

The reigning Indianapolis 500 champion has followed through in the five races over six weeks, winning at Toronto and posting an average finish of 3.8. The hot streak has allowed the Team Penske driver to move into second place in the NTT IndyCar Series championship standings.

Pagenaud, driver of the No. 22 Menards Chevrolet, is 38 points behind teammate Josef Newgarden heading into the penultimate race of the season. The Grand Prix of Portland, contested on the 1.964-mile, 12-turn road course, will be telecast live by NBC at 3 p.m. ET September 1.

“This is the part of the season that I love the most,” said Pagenaud, who’s coming off a fifth-place finish in the Bommarito Automotive Group 500. “It is down to the wire racing competing at our highest level.”

Last year, Indy car racing returned to Portland International Raceway after a 10-year hiatus. Pagenaud, who started 22nd, charged through the field to finish sixth in the 105-lap race. Newgarden qualified on the front row and placed 10th. Spencer Pigot led the Team Chevy charge with a fourth-place finish in the No. 21 Ed Carpenter Racing entry.

“I think we’re in a good spot, without a doubt,” said Newgarden, driver of the No. 2 Hitachi Chevrolet. “It’s not something that you can just sit back and rest on. It’s going to be tough the last two rounds.

“We’ve not had a smooth last three races. We’ve got to clean that up now for the final two. I think we’re in a good position, but we can’t do anything different than what we’ve been doing all year. We have to keep sort of attacking with some caution.”

Nine drivers powered by the direct-injected 2.2-liter, twin turbocharged Chevrolet V6 engine are entered.

Charlie Kimball will continue for the remainder of the season in the No. 23 Carlin Chevrolet, and Max Chilton returns to the No. 59 Gallagher Carlin Chevrolet after sitting out the past two races on ovals.

NBC will telecast the 105-lap race live at 3 p.m. ET September 1. Team Chevy will be well represented by:
