RCR Post Race Report – NASCAR Racing Experience 300

Tyler Reddick Collects Top-10 Finish in Daytona After Starting on the Pole in the No. 2 Pinnacle Financial Partners Chevrolet

“I’m happy we were able to start the day by capturing RCR’s fifth-consecutive season opening pole at Daytona International Speedway, even with the tire leak. It’s unfortunate we had to start from the back to change out that tire, but I knew we had a fast No. 2 Pinnacle Financial Partners Chevrolet and would be back up front in no time. We did just that and more. We had a couple issues on pit road, including an issue with a fuel cell, that sent us back to the rear of the field on almost every restart, but we came back up front each time. I tried to see if we could make something happen on the bottom at the end of the race, but it just didn’t work out. I’m glad we were able to bring this Camaro back in one piece and will be able to take it to Talladega Superspeedway in a couple months.”

Austin Dillon And The Dow Chevrolet Team Earn Ninth-Place Finish in The Duels at Daytona

“Man, what a race. I learned a lot for Sunday about the side-draft and how it works. We were shuffled to the back in our Dow Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, almost exactly like what happened in the Clash last Sunday. Starting at the bottom is not the place to be – at least not when you have a small field. When you get 40 cars out there, it may be a little bit different. It was good to run all of those laps on old tires because we learned that we need to work on our handling. We’ll do that tomorrow during practice. We’ll probably do a little bit of drafting to get the car tightened up. The good thing is the Dow Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has plenty of speed. We’ll fine tune it a little bit and get it driving better. If we do that, I feel like we have a car fast enough to compete in the Daytona 500. We just have to get it handling right.”

The 20-year-old Boston, Massachusetts native will make his first start for the organization at Texas Motor Speedway this March in the No. 21 Chevrolet Camaro.

“This is definitely the biggest opportunity I’ve had in my career,” said Grala. “Running for a powerhouse team like RCR is a dream come true, and one I plan on making the most of. With only a limited number of races to make an impression, I’m ready to get to work and lay it all on the line.”

Grala’s story began at just four years old behind the wheel of a go-kart in his hometown of Boston. From youngest winner in series history, to youngest winner in track history, he has made his mark at each level of the sport on his way to national competition.

In February 2017, Grala won the NextEra Energy 250 at Daytona International Speedway becoming the youngest NASCAR winner in history at the storied track (18 years, 1 month, and 26 days old). He capped off his rookie season as the youngest driver to ever make the NASCAR Playoffs since their inception in 2004.

Grala made a limited number of NASCAR Xfinity Series starts with his family-owned team during the 2018 season, collecting an impressive two top-five and five top-10 finishes.

“I’m looking forward to having Kaz Grala join RCR this year,” said Richard Childress, Chairman and CEO of RCR. “Kaz is a talented young driver who has proven he can win in any type of racing. I think he’ll be up to speed and contending for multiple wins for us out on the track in no time.”

News on Grala’s sponsorship and crew chief will be announced at a later date.

RCR Post Race Report – The Clash

Austin Dillon and The Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet Team Kick Off Speedweeks with Sixth-Place Finish in the Advance Auto Parts Clash at Daytona International Speedway

“Our Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 ran really well today in the Clash, and I’m happy with a sixth-place finish, but I was really hoping for more side-by-side racing. The top lane was very dominant. I felt like my car was faster than some of the guys I was around, but you can’t really do anything with it unless you get really aggressive. I tried to get aggressive and no one was wanting to work. Everybody got to the top and it was really about track position. It was definitely hard to make a move. At the end of the race, we were involved in the big wreck but, luckily, the Bass Pro Shops Chevy was still drive-able even though it had damage on all sides. When the wreck happened in front of me, I just tried to hold the wheel straight and punch a hole. I tried to slow down, but you can’t stop when you’re going 200 mph. It’s a hard thing to do. For the Daytona 500, I think the racing will be better with 40 cars in the field. It will be good to have a car that handles well because so many things happen during a 500-mile race. You can get track position other ways than just racing, so we will do our job. I’m proud of RCR today. All of our cars had speed.”

AUSTIN DILLON QUOTES:
What are your thoughts heading into your fifth Clash?
“It’s a fan’s race. It’s a race that’s fun for the fans to watch and fun for the drivers to race in. I’m thankful that I have a chance to compete in it. Our expectations are to go out and try to win it. It’s a really cool race with a lot of prestige and to win it would help set the tone for the rest of Speedweeks. Our entire organization has worked really hard during the off season to make gains and this will be the first opportunity to showcase that.”

You have Daniel Hemric joining RCR in the Cup Series. What will it be like having him as a teammate this year?
“I think it’s cool being teammates in the Cup Series. We started together in Bandoleros running the quarter mile at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He started Go Kart racing. When we were growing up, I always thought that Daniel was so talented. I felt like if he ever got the shot he was going to do a really good job in the racecar, and he has. He’s done a good job and now we’re racing together. That experience that we’ve gained from different motorsports should help us this year and we’ll know how to communicate. He’s fired up. He’ll push me and that’s what you need. You need people around you that push you to be better.”

Matt Tifft Secures Top-10 Finish with No. 2 Tunity Team in
2018 Season Finale

“We may have finished 10th, but this result doesn’t show how fast our No. 2 Tunity Camaro was all weekend long. My team worked hard during both practice sessions to get our Chevrolet to where I could run the top lane, and I thought we were in a good spot for the race. We also qualified well, grabbing the ninth spot with a decent balance on the car. Unfortunately, when the race started I just couldn’t get the front grip out of the tires that I needed to make the top groove work. My team fought hard to get it to where I could stick and make the bottom work to my advantage, and that really helped give me just enough to break into the top 10 for the finish. I can’t thank this No. 2 team enough for everything they’ve done for me this season. We had a great year together, and I learned a lot. I also want to thank all my partners for coming on board this season. Their support means a lot to me, and I hope we did them all proud this year.”

Austin Dillon Drives the Dow UCON Chevrolet Camaro ZL1
to 11th-Place Finish in 2018 Season Finale

“Man, I really wanted a top-10 finish today to finish out the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season and we came so close. Our Dow UCON Camaro ZL1 had handling issues for most of the race, but I had confidence in crew chief Justin Alexander and the Dow Racing team that they would be able to work on our Camaro ZL1 during pit stops. They’ve been great at that all season long. We knew half the battle was gaining track position and we worked hard to do that both on the track and on pit road. By the final stage, the handling improved a lot. I was digging at the end but came up just short of a 10th-place finish. That was fun. I want to thank everyone at RCR and ECR and all of our partners for a great 2018 season. We were able to accomplish a lot together and I’m looking forward to next year.”

Richard Childress Racing’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series history at Homestead-Miami Speedway … Homestead-Miami Speedway is one of the few race tracks where team owner Richard Childress has yet to earn a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory. In 60 starts, RCR has earned nine top-five and 24 top-10 finishes at the 1.5-mile, progressively-banked oval with drivers Dave Blaney, Clint Bowyer, Burton, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Green, Harvick, Newman, Paul Menard and Mike Skinner. Austin Dillon Earns Top-10 Finish at ISM Raceway in
American Ethanol Chevrolet Camaro

“I’m really proud of this No. 3 team. This was one of the best Chevrolet Camaros we have brought to the racetrack all season long. We had solid practices, a strong qualifying effort and a good start to the race. We were able to earn points in both stages, but we made one adjustment that hurt the handling of the car and then we’re caught on pit road right as a caution came out. These guys never gave up, though. We got the wave around and were able to make another adjustment that really helped this American Ethanol Chevrolet over the final run. We also had a little luck on our side as we were able to avoid that big wreck late in the race. We’ll take this eighth-place finish and try to end the season on a high note at Homestead-Miami Speedway.”

Matt Tifft and GoGreen Equipment Team Secure Top-Five Finish at ISM Raceway

“First of all, I have to thank all of my team for the No. 2 GoGreen Equipment Camaro they gave me today. We knew we were going to have to be on offense all day to have a shot to make the Championship 4 and we definitely did that. We had a great Stage 1, finishing sixth. Unfortunately, I was just a touch too quick on pit road and got a speeding penalty before Stage 2, which forced me to start in the back. Our Camaro was really fast though and that helped me get back into the top-10 prior to the end of that stage’s conclusion. We needed a win at that point to advance to the next round, and we had a couple of shots at it. In the end, my Camaro just built a little bit too tight to get it done in the closing laps. I know my team will keep after it though, and we’ll go for the win next weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway.”

Austin Dillon Drives RCR’s No. 3 Dow NORKOOL Camaro ZL1 to Top-10 Finish at Texas Motor Speedway

“That was a solid top-10 finish for the Dow NORKOOL team. We battled all weekend. We didn’t have what we thought we needed, but we overcame and put in a good fight. After starting deep in the field, we were able to gain 12 positions in the first 20 laps and hang on to battle in the top-15 all day. I love coming to Texas Motor Speedway and I hope we put on a good show for the fans.

Matt Tifft and the Anderson’s Maple Syrup Team Battle to Seventh Place Finish

“We had a great No. 2 Anderson’s Maple Syrup Chevrolet at Texas today. We ran top-five, top-10 speeds all weekend long, both in practice and throughout the race. I struggled a little bit at the start of the race with a lack of rear grip, but that really came to me during the race with adjustments and as the track picked up more rubber. We decided early on in the final stage that we planned to go for it on the fuel mileage, so I started saving hard with 25 laps to go. Unfortunately, a caution that came out with just over 10 laps to go which changed our strategy. Having over 60 laps on our tires was a little too much, so we decided to come to take four fresh ones and top off on fuel. That set us back a little bit farther than we wanted, and I just ran out of time and room to get back up to top-three spots where we ran for most of the day. We’ll take seventh though and get ready to fight for a transfer spot in Phoenix.”

AUSTIN DILLON QUOTES:
Texas Motor Speedway is a 1.5-mile track, just like Kansas Speedway is, except it has a new surface. Tell us about racing at Texas.
“Texas Motor Speedway is a bit different from Kansas Speedway in that it is a new surface, and has two different ends. You have one end that’s very banked and has high speeds, and then you have a hard end where you have to get turned and get back on the gas. We’re looking forward to it. We plan to bring a new car to Texas Motor Speedway so we’re looking forward to getting there and seeing what we’ve got with it. Hopefully it pays dividends.”

Next year the rules package is going to be completely different than what we will see this time around at Texas Motor Speedway. Do you just throw the notebook out at the end of this race or are there things you can use still next year?
“It’s going to be tough to take the notebook that we’ve run over the last couple of years and apply it, but everything does relate. You can always apply something. Learning the history of the race and how the rubber lays down. We’re always learning a little bit.”

This Week’s Caterpillar Next Gen Excavator Camaro ZL1 at Texas Motor Speedway … Ryan Newman will make his 618th Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start when he competes one final time this season in the Lone Star State. In 30 Cup Series starts at Texas Motor Speedway, he’s visited Victory Lane in the spring of 2003. The Rocket Man also won the pole for both Cup Series events in 2005 to complete the sweep. RYAN NEWMAN QUOTES
Caterpillar is bringing quite a few Cat Racing fans to Texas. This weekend you are sporting a special paint scheme. Thoughts?
“It’s my understanding we will have almost 400 people coming to Texas on behalf of Caterpillar and Caterpillar Building Construction Products (BCP). It’s a big weekend for them considering we’re introducing the Next Gen Mini Excavators to guests at Texas Motor Speedway where they will see firsthand how impressive the excavators are with on-site demonstrations. Plus, I’ll get to play a part by driving the paint scheme that our race fans will get to see. What I like about this car is that customers of BCP were given the chance to provide their input on this piece of equipment in an effort to help them do their jobs better and efficiently, with of course, safety in mind. If you look our decklid, the names of almost 40 people and companies who were involved in the design process is listed. To me, that’s what makes this deal impressive.”

What are your thoughts on Texas Motor Speedway?
“What I like about Texas Motor Speedway is it provides drivers with a lot of options. You can move around and find a line that your car responds to and it’s really versatile, so you can get around somebody. It’s also fast- really fast – so aero is also an important part of it. With it being one of the older tracks on the circuit asphalt-wise, the racing is always good for both the drivers and the fans watching in the stands and on television. I hope they leave the track’s surface alone.”

Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Texas Motor Speedway … In 84 Series starts at the 1.5-mile speedway, RCR has captured five victories with driver Kevin Harvick (2001, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2012). The Welcome, North Carolina, organization has completed 15,686 laps of the 16,565 (94.7 percent) that they have competed. RCR has accumulated three pole awards, 22 top-five and 45 top-10 finishes, led 942 laps and averages a starting position of 11.4 and finishing position of 12.1.

Kansas Review … All RCR teams finished in the top 10 at Kansas Speedway two weeks ago with Daniel Hemric leading the charge in second place. Shane Lee finished fifth and Matt Tifft placed sixth in the Kansas Lottery 300.

The Points … Daniel Hemric and Matt Tifft currently sit second and fifth, respectively, in the Xfinity Series driver point standings. The No. 3 RCR team is currently 10th in the series owner point standings.

MATT TIFFT QUOTE:
You have two 1.5-mile speedways to start the Round of 8 with Kansas last weekend and Texas this weekend. How are those two tracks similar and different?
“I think they’re similar in that the guys who have fast cars are going to have fast cars at both tracks due to aero packages. That’s about where the similarities stop though. Since they’ve paved Texas, it’s a lot more similar to Kentucky, where it’s a one to one-and-a-half lane track. It’s very narrow at Texas. Usually at intermediate tracks we have big, sweeping wide arcs. Texas doesn’t necessarily have that with the flat entry into Turn 1 and then Turns 3 and 4 being so fast. The challenge with Texas is we run such a hard tire that we’re pushing the car to make it as free as possible, but there really is no slip in that tire so if you push it too far you’re done. Kansas used to be like that, but now with the character and bumps it’s been developing it’s taking on its own form.”

Meet Lee … Lee is scheduled to take part in a Q&A session at the Team Chevy display on Saturday, November 3 beginning at 11:15 a.m. local time.

SHANE LEE QUOTE:
You have experience at Texas Motor Speedway with one truck start. What did you think of the track and how will that help prepare you for this weekend?
“It has been almost two years now since I raced at Texas in the trucks, so my experience there was actually on the old configuration. For me, that makes this weekend almost like a new track since I haven’t really seen the new configuration in person to be able to study it as much as other tracks. We’ve had some solid weeks with the No. 3 RCR team though, so I’m not too worried about it. We were so strong at Kansas, firing off really well and putting together a race that ended in my first top-five Xfinity Series finish. That was probably our best weekend so far from start to finish. I think we’re really starting to find some momentum which will help us out this weekend.”

This Week’s South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet Camaro at Texas Speedway … Hemric will be making his fourth NASCAR Xfinity Series start at Texas Motor Speedway during this weekend’s 200-lap event. The Kannapolis, North Carolina, native has two top-10 qualifying efforts and finished third in April after leading a total of 39 laps.

Rearview Mirror: Kansas … The No. 21 South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet was the most dominant car during the opening race of the Round of 8. Hemric earned his fourth pole award of the 2018 season and led every lap of the opening stage. He kept the No. 21 Chevrolet out front for 128 of the 200 laps but faded to second in the final run to the checkered flag. The second-place finish was Hemric’s 14th top-five finish of the season and 11th top-three finish of the year.

This Week at the South Point … Fans visiting the South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet have the opportunity to see the National Barrel Horse Association “Dash for Cash” at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center from November 2 – 4. Meet the Press … Hemric will be in the Texas Motor Speedway media center for a Xfinity Series driver panel on Friday, Nov. 2, starting at 1:30 p.m. ET. The media availability session will be streamed live on NASCAR.com/presspass.

DANIEL HEMRIC QUOTES:
What are your thoughts heading into this weekend’s race at Texas Motor Speedway after showing so much speed at the last mile-and-a-half track at Kansas Speedway?
“The No. 21 South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet team is ready to get to Texas Motor Speedway this weekend. The RCR Xfinity Series program is bringing fast race cars to the track each weekend, and that showed at Kansas Speedway. We had a lot of speed in these Chevrolets at Kansas and expect that to continue this weekend in Texas. We did not get a chance to qualify at Texas in April, but still found our way to the lead and secured a solid third-place finish. We are looking to capitalize on what we learned in the spring, utilize the speed these Chevrolets have shown over the last few weeks and put together another solid day, hopefully finding a way to secure our spot in Homestead for the championship battle. We will have to do all of that without crew chief Danny Stockman at the track, but I am more than confident in this No. 21 group, everyone back at the shop and the leadership of RCR and expect us to be a contender throughout the entire weekend.”

With so many playoff contenders having issues at Kansas Speedway, do you think the intensity level will ramp up at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend?
“The guys that entered the Round of 8 with a solid points advantage thought they could cruise all the way to Homestead, well, we proved that theory wrong in the opening laps of the race at Kansas Speedway. That is tough as a competitor, because on any other day that could be us, so you can’t take anything for granted. What we saw at Kansas could happen at any point over the next few weeks. Now everyone has to legitimately race every single lap and try to get to the end of these races in order to score points and at least get an opportunity to advance. It is no different than what we have been doing all year. We need to maximize our days and maximize the weekends.”

Austin Dillon and the Dow Racing Team Show Speed at Martinsville Speedway Despite Unscheduled Pit Stop

“There is nothing better than short track racing, especially at Martinsville Speedway. We didn’t qualify very well, but I wasn’t really worried about that because we have been in that position before and have been able to rebound come race time. This weekend was no different. We raced our way into the top-11 by lap 100. Our day took a turn towards the end of Stage 2 when we were running 10th and cut a right-front tire. We went 10 laps down pitting under green and trying to repair the sway bar. I’m bummed we had those issues, but we still had an extremely fast Dow Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. I wish we could have battled at the end.”

Austin Dillon and Richard Childress Racing’s No. 3 Dow Chevrolet Team Earn Hard-Fought 11th-Place Finish at Kansas Speedway

“I’ll be honest. I didn’t feel like we had a very good Dow Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 all weekend, so I am proud of this team and our 11th-place finish at Kansas Speedway today. It was hard-fought. We weren’t very fast from the time we unloaded from the hauler on Friday, so we will have to work on that going forward. We started off Sunday’s race with a tight-handling condition, but the Dow Racing Team worked hard on adjustments all race long. By Stage 2, we had solid lap times, and by Stage 3, we were able to enter the top-10. I’m proud of this team’s hard work all weekend.”

Austin Dillon and the American Ethanol Team Avoid Melee, Earn Top-20 Finish at Talladega Superspeedway

“To he honest, I was worried at the start of the race because the American Ethanol Camaro ZL1 was not handling very well. My crew chief, Justin Alexander, and the team worked hard to fine-tune our Chevy throughout the race and we were able to earn some Stage points at the end of Stage 2. We opted to hang back in Stage 3 in anticipation of ‘The Big One.’ We knew that if we could avoid that, we would have a solid shot at the end. It didn’t work out quite the way we hoped with a relatively calm race and not enough laps to get to the front at the end. You win some, you lose some.”
