Austin Dillon Capitalizes on Seventh-Place Finish After Hard-Fought Day in No. 3 AAA Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

“I’m proud of the effort my team showed today at Dover International Speedway. We fought hard all day long for each position we could get with the No. 3 AAA Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. I fired off a little loose from the 14th spot, but the car got much tighter throughout the day. My entry was strong all race long, I just needed to be a bit looser for the center and exits of the corners to be able to turn like I wanted. Overall, we had a good day out on the track. We stayed on the lead lap the entire day, which was tough with the pace that was being set. This race is a fun and tough race, but we managed to get through it with a solid run and avoided getting caught up in the mess during the closing laps of the race to claim a top-10 finish. I’m really looking forward to heading to Talladega Superspeedway next weekend and continuing to build momentum with this team for the final weeks of this season.”

Overtime at Dover Equates to 17th-Place Finish for Ryan Newman and Waste Masters Solutions/22 in 22 Team

“I wanted to close out Dover with a better result than that for the Waste Masters Solutions/22 in 22 Camaro ZL1 team. We got down early and gambled on taking the wave around a few times, but we never were able to race our way back onto the lead lap. It certainly wasn’t for a lack of effort. For some reason, we needed more speed and battled loose in, tight center and loose off. Luke (Lambert, crew chief) made good calls today both with adjustments and strategy so I appreciate that. We’ll keep at it and have our fingers crossed for Talladega.”

Matt Tifft Advances to the Round of 8 with a 15th Place Finish in the No. 2 Fanatics / Surface Sunscreen Chevrolet

“This wasn’t our best weekend at Dover International Speedway, but we did what we needed to do to make it into the Round of 8. I just lacked the speed I needed to really drive up front like we had in the spring, but we definitely got our No. 2 Fanatics / Surface Sunscreen Chevrolet better throughout the weekend. I knew the No. 4 car would be doing everything he could to get in the next round, but luckily I was able to save the race car when he bumped us and kept myself from collecting any damage. From then on out, we just raced as aggressively as possible to make sure we stayed in the good to advance to the Round of 8. We’ll clean it up for the next round and hopefully be in a good spot to contend for a Championship Four spot at ISM Raceway.”

Richard Childress Racing at Dover International Speedway … RCR has earned four Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series wins at Dover International Speedway, most recently in September 2006 when Jeff Burton drove the No. 31 Chevrolet to Victory Lane. Three additional victories came with Dale Earnhardt behind the wheel, including both events at the Monster Mile in 1989 as well as the spring race in 1993. RCR has also earned one pole award, 24 top-five and 56 top-10 finishes in 169 combined starts at the high-banked, one-mile oval. “That was exactly what we needed out of today with our No. 2 Nexteer Chevrolet Camaro – a quiet day. No one really knew how this race was going to go, so I’m proud to come out of there pretty much unscathed with how on edge every single lap was here. My crew chief Randall (Burnett) and the team really did a great job getting the balance of our Camaro better and better throughout the weekend. The car felt the best it had all weekend at the end of the race. I was just a tad too loose to really push for more spots in the closing laps, but we will take sixth and move on to next weekend. Dover International Speedway is one of my all-time favorite tracks, and I’m really looking forward to getting back there next week for the final Playoff race in the Round of 12.”

What parts of the Roval do you think will be most treacherous?
“The whole track is treacherous. There are places where you can bust your tail at any given moment. Being over-aggressive can gain you speed, but it also can take you out if you end up jumping a curb. For me, the passing opportunities are the slow area in Turn 7, where there’s a slow left-hander, and going into Turn 1. I think Turn 1 will be a pretty good passing zone. Truthfully, I don’t think anyone really knows yet what to expect for the Roval.”

Are you worried about the Roval since it is a cutoff race in the NASCAR Playoffs?
“I don’t think worried is the correct term. The Roval is a place that could play into our favor. Survival will be key. Not making a mistake. You can race hard at the end because there will be some guys that take themselves out of it pretty quickly.”

What does it mean to make your second Cup Series start in front of your hometown crowd at Charlotte Motor Speedway?
“To make my second career Cup Series start at Charlotte Motor Speedway with Smokey Mountain Herbal Snuff and the No. 8 RCR Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 means the world to me. My Cup Series debut at Richmond earlier this year was something I will never forget, but to have another start come at my home track, with my family, friends, former car owners and those that have supported me along the way in attendance, that will be really special. I have had a lot of success on the quarter-mile track at Charlotte Motor Speedway, so hopefully we will have some success on the new Roval layout as well.”

What was it like testing at the Roval in 2017 and what do you expect out of this weekend’s race?
“Last fall, I was able to take part in the Goodyear tire test on the Roval, and that was my first time in a Cup car. I was getting acclimated to the Cup car, plus going through the motions of participating in my first tire test period. You’re going through the course, giving feedback, they’re moving the chicanes back and forth, it was really early in the development of the Roval and a lot has changed since then. I didn’t get to participate in the last two Cup tests at the Roval, but I do have laps and I do have an idea of shift points and the little things that take time when you go to a new racetrack to figure out. It is going to be interesting to see how it all shakes out. I think the biggest things I take away from what I have experienced and learned from our teammates’ test there this year are the lack of runoff room around the track and that makes the driver tip-toe around the track. You are going to have to be on it just to make sure you can keep your race car in one piece to have something to race with by the time they pay a check at the end of the day. If I wasn’t in both races, I would be in the grandstands watching because it’s going to be entertaining and fun to watch.”

This Week’s Grainger/American Red Cross at Charlotte Motor Speedway … Ryan Newman will make his 613th Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start when he competes in the inaugural running of the Charlotte Roval 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. In 35 total starts at CMS, Newman has recorded runner-up finishes two times (fall, 2003; Coke 600, 2009) along with nine pole awards, five top-five, 15 top-10 finishes. The “Rocketman” has led 278 laps in competition. The South Bend, Indiana native has an average start of 9.4 and average finish of 18.2.

In 2017, the U.S. saw unprecedented levels of disaster. And the need to support Red Cross disaster relief efforts continues. RYAN NEWMAN QUOTES:
You tested at the Roval back in July. What did you learn?
“There are places where you can gain and lose the most time in and it’s the places where you are going really, really, fast to really, really slow. The key is to get through them as clean as you possibly can. The infield part of the course is a challenge, too. For me, the biggest adjustment is getting used to the last two corners. I think they are the most challenging.

“My first impression of the Roval when we tested was it still needed a little bit of work in a couple different areas. I know they were working to keep people honest on the back straightaway. It’s going to be what it’s going to be. It’s going to be a very important race in the Playoffs and it’s new to our sport. Any time we can do something new and exciting is a good thing. We want to try and make the best of those situations when turning an oval into a road course. It doesn’t happen every day. It’s not going to be a true road course. It’s a roval. I’ve got experience at Daytona and it’s considered to be a roval. I just want to make the best of a situation. The only thing we know for sure is there is going to be a winner.”

Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway … In 95 Series starts at the Concord-based speedway, RCR has captured four victories with drivers Jeff Green (2002), Jeff Burton (2007) and Austin Dillon (2015). The Welcome, North Carolina organization has completed 18,146 laps of the 19,019 (95.4 percent) that they have competed. RCR has accumulated eight pole awards, 25 top-five and 53 top-10 finishes, led 748 laps and averages a starting position of 11.0 and finishing position of 12.2.

Richmond Review … All three RCR Xfinity series teams finished in the top-10 at Richmond Raceway last weekend. Daniel Hemric finished third, Matt Tifft finished fifth, and Shane Lee finished ninth in the Go Bowling 250.

MATT TIFFT QUOTE:
This weekend, the highly-anticipated Roval race will take place. How have you been preparing for the race and what are you expecting?
“I’ve gotten to run some laps of the Roval on the simulator, and it has been very interesting. It’s an extremely unique road course, but it does have a lot of characteristics to it during the infield portion that feel a little similar to Mid-Ohio. That’s got me smiling because I love that road course, and it suites me very well. The problem for me, and all of the drivers, is that if I lose any track position, I really can’t force any spots out there. At least in the simulations, there seems to be one groove and that’s about it. The track itself seems as slick as ice, even in the preferred groove, which I think is why there were so many incidents with guys getting into the wall during the Cup test sessions. So if you’re not perfect, or extremely close to it, it’s going to be tough. You’re going to have a few calamity corners, especially with the chicane on the backstretch, that if one guys checks up and causes a chain reaction it’ll be interesting to see how we as drivers get out of that situation. Any damage we get could have huge implications. Normally on road courses, we can get away with a little bit of damage, but with the oval portion of the course we’re approaching the speeds we normally run around Charlotte and will need our cars to be perfect for that. Figuring out the balance between that oval portion and the infield section will be really important to figure out.”

This Week’s South Point Hotel & Casino Camaro at Charlotte Motor Speedway … Brendan Gaughan will make his third NASCAR Xfinity Series start of the season for Richard Childress Racing. The inaugural Roval event will mark his 13th NASCAR Xfinity Series start at Charlotte Motor Speedway. In 12 starts, Gaughan’s best finish was runner up in 2009. In total, he’s recorded one top-five and three top-10 finishes. His average start is 19.5 and average finish is 14.1.

I also hear that there may be weather in the area for the weekend and that would really spice things up even further. I can’t wait to get there and drive the No. 3!”

This Week’s South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet Camaro at Charlotte Motor Speedway … Like the rest of the field, Hemric will be making his first start at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s new Roval road course. Hemric was able to participate in a 2017 Goodyear tire test at the Roval but has not been on it since the track announced the final configuration. Hemric has six NASCAR Xfinity Series road course starts, earning three top-five and three top-10 finishes, with a total of 29 laps led.

Rearview Mirror: Richmond … Starting from the sixth position, Hemric wasted little time racing his way to the front of the field and into contention for the win during Friday night’s opening Xfinity Series Playoffs race at Richmond Raceway. The No. 21 South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet took the lead for the first time on Lap 46, with Hemric winning Stage 1 and earning a playoff point. Hemric remained a factor at the front of the field, battling for the lead throughout the evening. When the checkered flag flew after 250 laps, Hemric was third, his 10th top-three finish of the 2018 season.

Austin Dillon and The Dow VORASURF Chevrolet Team Earn Top-10 Finish in Second Race of The Round of 16 with Sixth-Place Result at Richmond Raceway

“That’s exactly the performance we needed with the Dow VORASURF Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 tonight. We were able to execute a no-mistakes race, earning Stage points in Stage Two and finishing sixth. We could have had Stage points in the first Stage if we would have qualified better, but if we would have qualified better we probably wouldn’t have had the car we had tonight. It was an impound race so we knew we were going to have to bite the bullet in qualifying to have a car free enough to race good. We were just super-loose in qualifying. That was a heck of a run for us. We didn’t even make adjustments throughout the race during pit stops. Our Dow VORASURF Camaro ZL1 was that good. We’ve done all we could in these Playoffs, so I’m really proud right now. I hope all the studying I’ve done for the Roval will pay off also. We don’t want to be in the first group out.”

Matt Tifft and the No. 2 Anderson’s Maple Syrup Team Battle Adversity, Lead Laps and Score a Top-5 Finish

“This was truly a race of ups and downs. Our No. 2 Anderson’s Maple Syrup Camaro qualified in the top 10 and made massive gains near the end of Stage 1 to finish fourth. We were the fastest car on the track from lap 35 on and it showed. Unfortunately, our team had to battle adversity after blowing a front left tire immediately after pitting at the first stage break. That cost us a few spots, but we quickly rebounded to finish in the top 10 at the end of Stage 2. A quick pit stop put us P1 to begin the Final Stage. This allowed me to lead several laps and gave me invaluable experience going forward in the Playoffs. I have to say, it was a great rally to get back up in the top 5. I felt like we competed hard and had a chance to win. I’m not sure if we would have been able to close the deal because our car was so good on long runs but the short run speed was where we struggled a bit. Thanks to Anderson’s Maple Syrup and everyone on this team. It was a great start to the Playoffs, and if we bring this every week it’ll be a good run for us.”

We gave up a lot of track position throughout the day, not just from starting in the back, but we really struggled on pit stops. I felt like I got all I could out of it. The end of the race was a little bit of a bummer. We got squeezed in the middle at the end with no where to go. We needed a top-10 finish today. Eleventh is good, but racing my teammate to the line there I thought we would get him, but we didn’t. It was a solid battle with a good points day. It’s on to Richmond Raceway.”

On-Track Incident Ends Matt Tifft and the KC Motorgroup’s Day Prematurely at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

“Days like today are just frustrating. We had a really fast No. 2 KC Motorgroup Chevrolet Camaro, leading first practice Friday. We had some struggles getting through tech so we started in a little bit of a hole in the back of the field, but I was confident my team and I could fight our way out of it. We were successful at that, climbing all the way from 40th to 12th by the end of Stage 1. I’m not sure what happened with our Camaro, we’ll have to go look at that more closely to figure it out, but all the sudden it turned on me and that was it for us. This isn’t the way we wanted to end our regular season in the 2018 Xfinity Series, but I fully believe my team will be ready to go for our first race in the Playoffs next weekend.”

Matt Tifft and the No. 2 Surface Sunscreen Team Bring Home Sixth-Place Finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

“What an interesting weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We didn’t quite know what to expect starting the race on a completely green track with no practice time, but I think we put on a good show for the fans. The No. 2 Surface Sunscreen Chevrolet was fast and fun to drive today. We ran right inside of the top-five all race long, gaining track position in the third stage and leading laps. It was valuable to be in the position to run up front today and learn a little bit more about timing restarts on the front two rows. The red flag came out towards the end of the race, and with the heat cycle on tires it just made us a little bit too tight once we got back going which caused the slip back to sixth. There were some pretty big, aggressive moves by everybody today, so you had to be on offense a lot of the time. Overall it was a good day for my team. We have some good momentum going into the final race of the Xfinity Series regular season, recording five top-10 finishes in a row, so I’m looking forward to getting to Las Vegas next week and keeping this streak going.”

Austin Dillon and No. 3 American Ethanol Team Fight Their Way to 16th-Place Finish

“First, I’d just like to say it was a privilege to drive the ‘Silver Secret’ and honor Dale Earnhardt for NASCAR Throwback weekend at Darlington. The No. 3 American Ethanol e15 Camaro ZL1 showed solid speed today even though we finished 16th. At one point during the first stage, we were the fastest car on the track. Near the end of the stage, I battled to stay on the lead lap and managed to do so even with some contact before the stage break. I battled a loose car during Stage 2. And again, near the conclusion of the stage, I was touched by another car as I fought to stay on the lead lap. Even though I missed staying on the lead lap by a nose, I got the lucky dog to start the final stage. Our guys did a great job making repairs to the minor damage. The final stage proved to be a bit more difficult. Unfortunately, we were assessed a penalty for an uncontrolled tire during a pit stop halfway through the stage. Even though we went a couple laps down, we didn’t stop fighting and eventually found ourselves back on the lead lap with less than 25 laps to go. In the end, our finish didn’t represent the team’s effort. “It feels awesome to come out of Darlington Raceway with a top-10 finish and a clinched playoff spot, especially considering last year when I wasn’t able to make a lap during the race due to early contact. My No. 2 Surface Sunscreen Chevrolet Camaro handled better and better throughout this weekend and came into its prime right as I started to figure out how to get around this track. Once I found that, I was able to climb back up from our mid-pack starting spot and into the top 10 by the middle of Stage 2. I have to thank my entire crew, especially my pit crew, today. They were on it today and really helped us gain spots every time we came to pit road. It was awesome to have the Dave Marcis throwback on the Camaro this weekend and so fun to have him out at the track. Hopefully we did him proud!”

Matt Tifft will Drive No. 2 Chevrolet Camaro Modeled After Marcis’ 1976 Chevrolet

WELCOME, N.C. (August 28, 2018) – In celebration of the NASCAR Throwback weekend at Darlington Raceway, Richard Childress Racing will honor longtime friend and former test driver Dave Marcis. Matt Tifft’s No. 2 Surface Sunscreen Chevrolet Camaro will sport a throwback paint scheme representing Marcis’ 1976 No. 2 Chevrolet during the NASCAR Xfinity race at the track deemed “Too Tough To Tame.”

While Marcis only drove an RCR entry once during an October 1995 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at ISM Raceway, he has been a longtime friend to Richard Childress and had a close connection with Dale Earnhardt Sr., often going hunting and fishing with the pair. Marcis also served as RCR’s favorite test driver and had a large part in helping test and set up Earnhardt’s No. 3 Chevrolet that won the 1998 Daytona 500. Matt Tifft Earns Career-Best Second Place Finish After Starting From the Pole at Road America

“We had a great No. 2 Dragon Alliance Chevrolet Camaro all weekend long at Road America. It handled well during our practice session, just needed a couple adjustments done to it. It was awesome to get our first pole of the year at a road course. I really thought I had messed up my lap, but it turned out to be the fastest one, which seems to happen a lot at road courses. We dominated the first stage of the race, earning our first stage win of the season. I got shuffled back a little bit toward the end of the race on the restart, but with the handling and speed of my Camaro I was able to climb back to third and then into second. I wish we could have gotten up there to challenge Justin Allgaier for the win, but we just ran out of time. It was a great weekend overall for our No. 2 team at Richard Childress Racing. If we keep performing like this, we’ll get the top spot soon enough.”
