Giovanni Scelzi Named North American 360 Sprint Car Poll Rookie of the Year

Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (Jan. 13, 2017) – Giovanni Scelzi broke onto the sprint car scene in a big way in 2016.

Scelzi, who turned 15-years-old right after last season ended, captured a championship during his inaugural year in a 360ci winged sprint car. With the support and a ride from Roth Motorsports, Scelzi garnered the King of Kings title as well as four podiums, seven top fives and 12 top 10s in 17 sprint car races.

On Thursday evening it was announced that Scelzi’s performance earned him the North American 360 Sprint Car Poll Rookie of the Year Award as a voting panel of media members, promoters, sanctioning officials and manufacturers selected the youngest son of former NHRA champion Gary Scelzi for the honor.

“I am so thankful for Dennis and Teresa Roth, Todd and Brent Ventura, my family and everyone who has supported my racing career,” Giovanni Scelzi said. “To receive such a prestigious award is an amazing feeling and I’m very grateful for everyone who voted for me.”

Scelzi drove for three different sprint car teams in 2016. He recorded a top-10 finish during all seven races with Roth Motorsports and earned a top 10 during his lone race with Van Dyke Motorsports. Additionally, Scelzi scored two podiums and four top 10s while piloting his family owned race car.

Scelzi’s best finish of second place came twice, with the second occurrence serving as one of the biggest moments of his young career. Scelzi drove the Roth Motorsports entry from 12th to the runner-up result on Sept. 17 at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, Calif. The strong finish helped propel him to the King of Kings championship, which served for the track title at Keller Auto Speedway.

Scelzi is currently in Australia working as the crew chief for his older brother, Dominic, who was tabbed the North American 410 Sprint Car Poll Rookie of the Year in 2013.

Scelzi Scores First Career Podium Finish in Australia During USA vs. WA Sprintcar Speedweek

Inside Line Promotions – KWINANA BEACH, Western Australia, Australia (Dec. 28, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi recorded his first career podium finish in Australia during only his fourth career sprint car race overseas.

The Fresno, Calif., resident, who battled for podiums before bad luck ended his first two starts earlier this month, produced a pair of strong results while driving for Wormall Motorsport this week during the first two rounds of the USA vs. WA Sprintcar Speedweek.

The action began on Monday at Quit Bunbury Speedway in Bunbury, Western Australia, Australia, where Scelzi qualified third quickest during his debut at the track. He was running second in the first heat race until the fuel pump came loose. The car shut off and Scelzi got into the wall as the car lost power steering because of the mechanical problem. Unfortunately, the damage caused a DNF.

A rain delay allowed the team to repair the sprint car in time for the second heat race, in which Scelzi maneuvered from sixth to third place. That lined him up on the inside of the seventh row for the main event.

“We basically held on and stayed out of trouble,” he said. “I was disappointed that we didn’t get a top three because every time we hit the track the car was a rocket.”

Scelzi ended eighth, which marked his best finish during his first three races in Australia. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/jBHhktYIdjU.

However, he topped that feat the following night during the second Speedweek round hosted by Perth Motorplex.

“We were a little loose in qualifying and the track went slick faster than we thought,” he said after timing in 12th quickest.

Scelzi picked up a pair of positions in both heat races to manuever from fifth to third and from fourth to second, respectively. He advanced into the pole shuffle, where a sixth-place result started him on the outside of the third row for the main event.

“I worked my way to third by Lap 3,” he said. “The track was slick to the wall and you could run anywhere. We had the car to beat in my opinion and we passed for second at one point, but after that I just couldn’t get back to them. I think I tried to conserve too long.”

Scelzi capped the night with a third-place finish. Here is a link to watch the feature: https://youtu.be/8sm5x-hFiu8.

“We had a phenomenal race car thanks to my brother, Giovanni, and everyone at Wormall Motorsport,” he said. “We have good momentum from the last two nights. I feel like we have had a top-three car every time we’ve hit the track in Australia so we’re ready to win one.”

Speedweek resumes on Friday at Quit Bunbury Speedway before wrapping up on Sunday at Perth Motorplex.

Scelzi Contends for Top Five During Debut in Australia

Inside Line Promotions – KWINANA BEACH, Western Australia, Australia (Dec. 12, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi was certainly making a splash during his Australia debut last Saturday at Perth Motorplex, where he drove into the top five before a parts issue forced him to end the night early.

Scelzi kicked off the Salute to the General event by qualifying eighth quickest in the Wormall Motorsport entry. That lined him up on the inside of the second row for the first of twin heat races.

“The bottom lane had grease so the start hurt us,” he said. “That put us behind a bit, but we picked up a position in the second heat race.”

Scelzi advanced from sixth to fifth place in his final heat race to line up on the inside of the fourth row for the main event.

“In the main event the track was extremely hooked up around the bottom,” he said. “It was really rough. We lost brakes around Lap 2, but were able to battle for a top five most of the race.”

Scelzi was in contention for a top-five result before he pulled in during a red flag with approximately 12 laps remaining.

“It was a great night to get our feet wet and be introduced to sprint car racing in Australia,” he said. “I want to say thanks to everyone at Wormall Motorsport for the opportunity and I can’t wait to get back in the car to see our growth.”

Scelzi and Wormall Motorsport are scheduled to return to action this Friday at Perth Motorplex for the fourth Shannons Fast Series event for the season.

Scelzi Enjoys Successful Season Thanks to Summer in the Midwest

Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (Nov. 21, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi pushed himself outside of his comfort zone in 2016 when Scelzi and his Roth Motorsports sponsored, family owned team left the familiar confines of California to compete in the Midwest throughout the summer.

“I knew it was going to be tough and the chances of winning were going to be slim, but it was a necessary step to get better as a racer,” he said. “My goal was to get better every night. I think the biggest thing was knowing this won’t be a deal where I’m going to set the world on fire. You have to take your lumps. We used it as a learning experience and it paid off before the season ended.” Continue reading Scelzi Enjoys Successful Season Thanks to Summer in the Midwest

Giovanni Scelzi Charges to Top-10 Finish During Season Finale

Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi capped his first season in a sprint car by earning a top-10 finish and the Hard Charger Award last Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track during the Civil War Sprint Car Series portion of the 33rd annual Tribute to Gary Patterson.

“It was a lot of fun,” he said. “It was definitely the fastest place I’ve been to. The track was glass slick from the beginning of the night. We were good in hot laps, but we fought some tuning issues with gearing.”

Scelzi opened the event, which was his first at the track and which featured approximately 50 drivers, by qualifying 10th quickest in his group. That lined him up on the inside of the third row for a heat race. Scelzi picked up a position to finish fourth and lock himself into the 18th starting position for the main event.

“The track was starting to take rubber in the heat races,” he said. “They tilled it up and it didn’t widen out in my feature. Everyone that tried to move around got passed. I took my time and was patient. It was a fight for who could run the bottom the best. With about 10 laps to go everyone got spread out and we rode around the rest of the race in 10th.”

Scelzi’s charge from 18th to 10th earned him his 23rd top 10 of the season. Here is a link to watch the feature: https://youtu.be/0zieHXIWLLE.

“It was a new car, new engine and new race track for me,” he said. “It was good to roll out and be that strong with a 50-car field. If you look at the big picture it was a good weekend.

“I want to thank Larry Moles and Southern Pacific Farms for loaning us an engine as well as everyone who helped the team. It was a great ending to the season.”

Scelzi Battles Throughout Challenging Trophy Cup

Scelzi Battles Throughout Challenging Trophy Cup

Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (Oct. 27, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi endured a roller coaster ride during the 23rd annual Trophy Cup last weekend at Thunderbowl Raceway.

“It had its ups and downs,” he said. “It was probably the least eventful Trophy Cup I’ve been to. We were really fast when the track had moisture. When it went slick we couldn’t get the car on the race track. We probably changed setups as many times as we could. Every time we hit the track we got better, but it wasn’t until the B Main on Saturday that we got it running well on that type of a track.” Continue reading Scelzi Battles Throughout Challenging Trophy Cup

Giovanni Scelzi Pleased With Experience Gained During First Trophy Cup

Giovanni Scelzi Pleased With Experience Gained During First Trophy Cup

Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi soaked in as much of his first appearance at the Trophy Cup as possible.

While the end result wasn’t what Scelzi desired, he said he gained a ton of knowledge and confidence during the 23rd edition of the marquee event hosted by Thunderbowl Raceway.

“It’s definitely something we can build on,” he said. “Getting on the fence, you run in as hard as you can. It’s being able to enter at the right angle, leaving your foot on the floor and trusting it. It’s one of the most difficult things I’ve done.”

Scelzi opened the event, which was only his second time at the tricky track, last Thursday by qualifying 22nd quickest in his group. He then placed fourth in a heat race before charging from 14th to a seventh-place result in a B Main, which was only three positions shy of transferring into the main event. Here is a link to watch the B Main: https://youtu.be/OxUhlE1UgKs.

“Qualifying put our night behind the eight ball, but I got to run 20 laps around Thunderbowl Raceway in the B Main so that was a plus,” he said. “I would have liked to make the feature to get more laps, but I felt like I improved throughout the night.”

That was evident from the start of Friday’s program, which Scelzi kicked off by qualifying 11th quickest in his group. He again finished fourth in a heat race before scoring a third-place result in a B Main to transfer into the back of the main event.

“I felt like from the first night to the second night I was so much more aggressive and being able to race around other cars,” he said. “It’s difficult for me to slide guys and make the right moves and not lose momentum, which are things that I’ll learn with more time in the seat.”

Scelzi then advanced from 21st to 17th place in the main event. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/TJb5kbwp8Us.

“The feature was pretty much one lane around the infield so there wasn’t much passing,” he said. “We were pleased with moving forward and getting more laps around that place. I think we’ll continue to show improvement with each race in Tulare.”

Unfortunately, the event wrapped up early for Scelzi, who was sidelined from Saturday’s finale because of a mechanical problem that developed during hot laps.
