Five-time champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. building momentum in Pro Stock

Five-time champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. building momentum in Pro Stock
ST. LOUIS (Sept. 24) — Progress in the NHRA Pro Stock class can be painstakingly slow, so when it is made, it is relished.

Five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. is relishing the progress made by his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart team. He qualified No. 10 for the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals on Saturday at Gateway Motorsports Park as his Elite Motorsports team continued to make gains with its Mopar program.

“We’ve been building a little bit of momentum quietly with our Magneti Marelli Dodge, and it feels good to make a little bit of an impact,” Coughlin said. “(Friday) night, we were probably as close as we have been in a while to the No. 1 car when we ran the .64.” Continue reading Five-time champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. building momentum in Pro Stock

Coughlin battled Bob Rahaim in the first round of eliminations in a matchup of the two drivers closest to points leader Rickie Smith. The loser would be eliminated from championship contention while the winner kept his slim title hopes alive.

Champion Troy Coughlin Sr. vows to continue Pro Mod title fight
ST. LOUIS (Sept. 21) — The odds aren’t in favor of JEGS.com driver Troy Coughlin Sr. repeating as champion of the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Series, but Coughlin, who races in the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals this weekend at Gateway Motorsports Park, vows to continue the fight.

“We’ll fight until the end of this thing,” Coughlin said. “We’ll fight until the NHRA drives us out, we run out of money, or we have a health issue.”

Coughlin and his team of crew chief Steve Petty and crewmembers Mike Rees and Kyle Pettis have battled all season, earning one victory in the competitive Pro Mod Series and contending in all eight races to date this season. Five-time champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. continues to perform at a high level

Five-time champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. continues to perform at a high level
ST. LOUIS (Sept. 21) — One of the reasons JEGS.com ace Jeg Coughlin Jr. has had such a brilliant career is his ability to maintain his high level of performance under all circumstances. Even when his race car was not at the top of the speed chart, Coughlin was able to focus and do his job.

That’s been the case this season, as his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart hasn’t always been the fastest. But Coughlin hopes that he and his Elite Motorsports team can continue to perform as well as possible, including this weekend at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park.

“We know what we’ve got under the hood, we know what we’ve got with the cars,” Coughlin said. “We need to get out and just continually try to not reinvent the wheel. We need to make good, solid runs; give the tuning group on the engine side an opportunity to clean some things up and maybe clean some things up with the chassis side. That will allow me to get behind the wheel and do what I do.”

Coughlin is a five-time Pro Stock champion who has 58 victories in his illustrious career, including two in St. Louis (in 2009 and 1998).

“I’m optimistic going into the weekend,” Coughlin said. “I think if we are on our best behavior we can be a top-eight car coming into the field on Sunday. We’ve seen a lot of strange things happen this year, evidenced with my partner and teammate Erica Enders missing the cut in Charlotte.

“We won’t take anything for granted. We’ll prepare hard, we’ll prepare smart, and see if we can’t get out and shake it up in St. Louis.”

Coughlin sits ninth in the Pro Stock points standings after one event in the six-race Countdown to the Championship.

“St. Louis is a fun race to have in the Countdown,” Coughlin said. “We get a good fan base out of the area there and love performing. We look to carry on the momentum that we did the week before in Charlotte in the first race to the Countdown.”

Coughlin’s wife, Samantha, will race a JEGS.com dragster in Super Comp in St. Louis, marking a three-car effort that also includes Pro Mod title contender Troy Coughlin Sr.

Pro Stock qualifying sessions are scheduled for 2:45 and 5:15 p.m., Friday, and 1:45 and 4:15 p.m., Saturday. Eliminations start at noon, Sunday. FOX Sports 1 will broadcast qualifying action from 6 to 7 p.m., Friday. Eliminations will air live from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday. (All times listed in CT).

CHARLOTTE (Sept. 18) — Five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. kicked off the Countdown to the Championship the right way: by turning on the win light in the first round of the NHRA Carolina Nationals on Sunday at zMax Dragway.

Coughlin, though, couldn’t take his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart to the semifinals, dropping a close race to Elite Motorsports teammate Vincent Nobile in round two.

“We knew if we were on our best behavior, make a good pass personally, and make a good pass with the car that we could certainly be there to light a win light up against (Allen Johnson in round one),” Coughlin said. “As we’ve seen in Pro Stock many times, this year you can’t ever surrender. Pro Mod champ Troy Coughlin Sr. tips his cap after first-round loss in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE (Sept. 17) — All JEGS.com Pro Mod driver Troy Coughlin Sr. could do was tip his cap after losing in the first round of the J&A Service Pro Mod Series race presented by the Real Pro Mod Association during the NHRA Carolinas Nationals on Saturday at zMax Dragway. His opponent, Mike Castellana, had a slightly better reaction time and pass to advance to the second round.

“We drew a tough race in the first round against Castellana,” Coughlin said. “He made a decent run in qualifying and had a great first round. What can you say? They got it done a little bit quicker.”

Castellana, the No. 10 qualifier, left first with a stellar .023-second reaction time and a pass of 5.861 seconds at 246.84 mph. That was .028-second quicker than his qualifying run.

two-time Charlotte winner
CHARLOTTE (Sept. 17) — Five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. was the first drag racer to ever run down zMax Dragway, breaking in the facility with a long, smoky burnout for the benefit of the local and national media back in 2008. On Sunday, he hopes to be the last one standing at the beautiful track, collecting the winner’s trophy of the ninth annual NHRA Carolina Nationals.

“We’d certainly love to win this race,” Coughlin said. “This is the first round of six in the Countdown to the Championship, and we’re going into race day probably as good as we’ve been most of the year in relation to the rest of the field. We’ll get out there and see if we can’t race hard and turn on some win lights.” Continue reading Five-time Pro Stock champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. looking to become a two-time Charlotte winner

Pro Mod champ Troy Coughlin Sr. making another late-season title run
CHARLOTTE (Sept. 14) — If it’s nearing the end of the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Racing Series season, then JEGS.com driver Troy Coughlin Sr. must be heating up.

That’s exactly what’s happening as Coughlin prepares for the NHRA Carolina Nationals this weekend at zMax Dragway.

Coughlin, the two-time Pro Mod champion, qualified No. 1 and raced to the final round of the U.S. Nationals two weeks ago in the seventh of 10 Pro Mod races, and he chopped Rickie Smith’s lead down to 87 points with three races remaining.

“Heading into Charlotte and getting a little closer on the points and all of that is exciting,” Coughlin said. “I love the Charlotte track and I love the fans in Charlotte. What a great place to race. I’m looking forward to being there and getting back to racing. We’re pretty fired up to get there. It’s time to go.” Continue reading Pro Mod champ Troy Coughlin Sr. making another late-season title run

Five-time Pro Stock champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. excited for fresh start Countdown provides
CHARLOTTE (Sept. 13) — Five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. has won championships in almost every way possible. He has earned them before NHRA instituted the Countdown to the Championship playoff system. He has entered the playoffs as the lead dog and had to fight off all challengers. He has also come from behind and snatched glory from his rivals.

Heading into this weekend’s ninth annual NHRA Carolina Nationals, Coughlin finds his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart team in yet another unique position. He joined Elite Motorsports last off-season as the team was coming off back-to-back titles with driver Erica Enders. Everything was changing, with the team switching manufacturers to Mopar and NHRA instituting sweeping changes in the class, including fuel injection and rpm limitations. No muss, no fuss: Mike Coughlin just wants to race his JEGS.com Top Dragster
CHARLOTTE (Sept. 13) — Two-time Division 3 champion Mike Coughlin of the famed Coughlin drag racing family cannot wait to get to zMax Dragway this weekend for the ninth annual NHRA Carolina Nationals and just have some fun.

After several years in the Top Sportsman category, Coughlin decided to make the switch to Top Dragster in the off-season, and he has spent the year adapting to the faster class, including many long weekends where he and the JEGS crew were simply trying to figure out how to run their rail.

“We’ve definitely had an up and down year with this new Top Dragster project and we’re not in any title hunt, so this is just going to be a fun weekend racing with my brothers Troy and Jeg and my sister-in-law Samantha,” Coughlin said. “My son Clay also is coming to Charlotte for the first time, so I can’t wait to show him zMax Dragway and what a four-lane dragstrip looks like. Pro Mod champ Troy Coughlin Sr. races to U.S. Nationals final
INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 5) — JEGS.com driver Troy Coughlin Sr. came within an eyelash of winning the U.S. Nationals again.

Coughlin left .001-second too soon in the final round of the J&A Service Pro Mod Series race presented by JEGS.com on Monday at Lucas Oil Raceway against Von Smith, drawing a red-light and giving the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals title to Smith.

Coughlin had gotten to the finish line well ahead of his opponent after Smith’s car wiggled at the hit and veered to the left, and he shut it off as Coughlin sped ahead, but the race was already decided.

INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 5) — Five-time Pro Stock world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. earned the 10th and final position in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs by a slender two points, despite losing in the first round of Monday’s 62nd annual U.S. Nationals.

Entering the race just ahead of Gray Motorsports team driver Alex Laughlin and his Gas Monkey Energy Drink hot rod, Coughlin needed to maintain his 10th-place ranking to make the playoffs. But when he lost to Greg Anderson and Laughlin was able to win his first-round race against Kenny Delco, Coughlin’s lead over Laughlin shrunk to two markers. The Indy race awards 50 percent more points than other events. Continue reading Jeg Coughlin Jr. locks up final playoff spot for Magneti Marelli/JEGS.com

Jeg Coughlin Jr. ready to chase sixth U.S. Nationals championship
INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 4) — Five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. is the only driver in NHRA history to win a professional race from all 16 qualifying positions, so the driver of the Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart will hardly be intimidated by starting the U.S. Nationals on Monday at Lucas Oil Raceway from the No. 15 qualifying spot.

“It’s going to be no easy feat tomorrow but we made a decent run there in Q5,” Coughlin said. “The car was still pretty soft even though the track was much slicker and hotter, so we’ve got more left in the tank.

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 31) — Troy Coughlin Sr. has the distinct honor of being the first in his decorated drag racing family to score a win at the U.S. Nationals, the sport’s most prestigious and longest-running event. He got the job done, almost by accident, back in 1991 when he drove his Olds Cutlass to the Super Gas title.

Now, 25 years later, on the silver anniversary of that landmark victory, Coughlin is back in his twin-turbocharged Chevrolet Corvette to see if he can finally win his second “Big Go” trophy, this time in the wild and wholly Pro Mod category.

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 30) — Jeg Coughlin Jr. has four U.S. Nationals trophies on his mantel, signifying a staggering record of success at drag racing’s premier event. But those victories aren’t the only things that make this weekend special for the Delaware, Ohio, native.

“Indy has been one of those races I can remember being a part of for as long as I’ve been racing, and even before I was racing myself when I’d come to this event with my family,” Coughlin said. “And nowadays it’s kind of our home track since we don’t run in Columbus (Ohio) anymore. Our home-state track is Norwalk, but Indy feels more like a home track to me, especially with the successes we’ve had as a family over the years.” Continue reading Indy memories abound for five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr.
