POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 12) — A native of Ohio who has raced Division 3 for most of his drag racing career, Mike Coughlin has never started a season as early as this year. But after winning the 57th annual Circle K NHRA Winternationals Sunday, things may just change a bit moving forward.

“What a way to start the year,” an exuberant Coughlin said in the historic winner’s circle of Auto Club Raceway in Pomona. “To think we were in testing less than a week ago with a broken motor and little hope we’d even be able to race this weekend, to end up here in the winner’s circle is nothing short of remarkable.

Second cowboy hat will have to wait for five-time champ Jeg Coughlin Jr.

Second cowboy hat will have to wait
for five-time champ Jeg Coughlin Jr.
DALLAS (Oct. 16) — A second cowboy hat for five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. will have to wait as the former Dallas winner fell in Sunday’s first round of the 31st annual AAA Texas NHRA Fallnationals.

Each year, the professional class winners of this event are fitted with a custom cowboy hat, a gift that’s become quite coveted by the racers. Coughlin already has one hat in his collection, which he collected after his 2002 victory at Texas Motorplex.

“We gave it all we had,” Coughlin said. “Overnight the guys made some big changes with the motor and the set-up and it was definitely more lively that round. Unfortunately, we didn’t earn another cowboy hat but I did see those hat guys at driver intros and it brought back some great memories.

“Texas is a special state with great fans that appreciate what we do. We always have fun at the Dallas and Houston events. I just wish we could have performed a touch better, but we will not give up.”

On this day, Coughlin and his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart race team fell to Granbury, Texas resident Alex Laughlin. It was a decent race but at the top end Coughlin’s 6.658 at 207.21 mph was bettered by Laughlin’s 6.620 at 209.61 mph.

“I missed the tree a touch,” Coughlin said, referencing his .048-second light. “A better reaction time would have made it closer. It felt like I hit it pretty good but numbers don’t lie. Alex was .076 so we had a chance there but he got us at the top end, looked like by about two or three feet.

“The car moved around a little too, which cost us some ET. We’ll just pick up the pieces, go over the data and get ready for Vegas and Pomona. We want to finish strong.”

The NHRA tour takes a weekend off before the penultimate race of the 2016, the Toyota NHRA Nationals, Oct. 28-30, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Five-time Pro Stock champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. looking to make some noise in Dallas

Jr. looking to make some noise in Dallas
DALLAS (Oct. 15) — In two and a half decades of racing, Jeg Coughlin Jr. has accomplished a lot of remarkable things. He’s won six world championships (five in Pro Stock and one more in Super Gas), claimed 76 national event trophies, raced to the winner’s circle in a record seven different eliminator categories, and is the only driver ever to win from all 16 qualifying positions.

That final stat seems the most telling at the conclusion of qualifying for the 31st annual AAA Texas NHRA Fallnationals as Coughlin and crew have struggled a bit this weekend with their Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart, slotting 14th on the 16-car elimination grid with an official clocking of 6.686 at 205.47 mph. Jeg Coughlin Jr. hoping to ride tall in the saddle once again in Dallas

Jeg Coughlin Jr. hoping to ride tall
in the saddle once again in Dallas
DALLAS (Oct. 11) — There are a couple of unique benefits to winning the annual AAA Texas NHRA Fallnationals at Texas Motorplex, the all-concrete drag strip just south of Dallas in Ennis, Texas. First, track owner Billy Myer, a former drag racer himself, adds a special engraved brick with the champion’s name in the winner’s circle. Secondly, each victor gets a commemorative cowboy hat to remind them they scored a big victory deep in the heart of Texas.

“Texans are very unique and proud people and the fans that come out to the drag races, both in Dallas and down in Houston, are some of the friendliest and fun-loving folks we encounter each year,” Coughlin said. “It’s always a hoot to head south and race for those appreciative fans.

“Billy knows what it feels like to win from his days as a Funny Car driver and he makes extra special to win at his track. I was fortunate enough to win there back in 2002 and I remember being very excited to return to the Motorplex the following year to see my brick in the winner’s circle. It’s just kind of a cool deal to see your name up there next to so many drag racing greats. And having it on a brick makes it permanent.” Continue reading Jeg Coughlin Jr. hoping to ride tall in the saddle once again in Dallas

Jeg Coughlin Jr. ready for a ‘good time’ at Dodge NHRA Nationals
READING, Pa. (Sept. 27) — The Dodge NHRA Nationals this weekend would be a good time for Mopar Pro Stock drivers to shine, and five-time class champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. hopes he and his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart can step up.

Maple Grove Raceway would be an apt place for Coughlin to perform well, as he has won there four times in his brilliant career. The 2016 season hasn’t gone as expected for Coughlin and his Elite Motorsports team, but he hopes he can gun for victory No. 5 there this weekend. ST. LOUIS (Sept. 25) — Jeg Coughlin Jr. won the Pro Stock race here in 2002 and 2009, but he couldn’t cure his seven-year itch at the 2016 AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals on Sunday at Gateway Motorsports Park.

Coughlin fell to Chris McGaha in a winnable first-round race Sunday with the Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart. Neither driver was very good on the Christmas Tree, but McGaha was a tick better on the racetrack: 6.632 seconds at 208.46 mph to 6.667 at 206.70 mph. Those passes came after McGaha had a .054-second reaction time, edging Coughlin’s .065 light. Continue reading Two-time St. Louis winner Jeg Coughlin Jr. stumbles in first round
