Troy Coughlin, JEGS.com Pro Mod team trending up heading to Atlanta

Troy Coughlin, JEGS.com Pro Mod team trending up heading to Atlanta
ATLANTA (May 10) — Pro Mod champion Troy Coughlin Sr. is excited about continuing an early-season surge when he races the JEGS.com Corvette at this weekend’s NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

While the season opener in Gainesville, Fla., didn’t go as expected for Coughlin and the JEGS.com team, he bounced back with a No. 2 qualifying effort and a spot in the semifinals in Houston.

Now, the runner-up from the 2015 Atlanta race is ready to win one more round here.

“Atlanta will be interesting,” Coughlin said. “We’ll have to try and read the weather as we get closer to the race, but the JEGS.com car is on a mission. We’re jumping in with both feet, like we did in Houston. It’s a fast hot rod, and we’re excited to get to Atlanta and put it back in line. It’s running really good.”

A test before the Houston race did wonders for the JEGS.com team. With crewmember Mike Rees driving, crew chief Steve Petty was able to tune the Corvette to some quick elapsed times. When Coughlin, who couldn’t attend the test, got behind the wheel in Houston, that upward trend continued.

“Steve and the guys (including crewmember Kyle Pettis) are doing an excellent job with this thing,” Coughlin said. “Hopefully, we’ll have a little bit more power when we get there because we’re constantly working on that with the rules changes that were made over the winter. It has put us in a mode where we say, ‘Hey, let’s keep kicking this thing and make as much power as we can and make this thing a beast on every run.’ ”

When Coughlin knows he has a fast race car, he’s able to do a better job on the Christmas Tree. He won one round in Houston on a holeshot and is one of the better leavers in the Pro Mod class.

“It gives you a ton of confidence,” Coughlin said. “Steve, Mike, and Kyle have given me a great race car, so all I need to focus on is my driving. It’s a big help, for sure.”

ATLANTA (May 10) — As the NHRA tour heads to Atlanta Dragway for the seventh race of the 2016 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, six-time world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. remains bullish on the potential of his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart and the entire Elite Motorsports team, which he joined in the offseason.

While admitting his ninth-place ranking is below the team’s standards, Coughlin says his 26 years of experience have taught him how to weather the peaks and valleys of long and grueling race seasons. Continue reading Jeg Coughlin Jr. relying on 26 years of experience to weather early-season storm

May 8, 2017

Ryan Blaney and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team put together their strongest effort of the season on Saturday night in the Go Bowling 400 at Kansas Speedway.

Blaney started seventh, and from the drop of the green flag until the checkered flag, he was rarely out of the top-10, and inside the top five for much of the race before finishing a season-best fifth.

His pit crew, led by crew chief Jeremy Bullins, was virtually flawless throughout the race, with Blaney gaining one position on nearly every pit stop. Continue reading Blaney Finishes A Season-Best Fifth At Kansas

Race Adjustments Help Austin Dillon and the American Ethanol Team Earn Sixth Top-10 Finish of 2016

“I had a fun night tonight. The American Ethanol Chevrolet was pretty fast. We just had to keep steadily working our way through there and thankfully it worked out well for us. I think we found some stuff on our adjustments as the race went on. We just kept getting better and better. It was challenging to pass tonight. For a while we were three-wide in the middle of the pack. It was hard to clear people. You could get close but you couldn’t clear. It was a good night for us and and I know we will have a win before too long.” Continue reading Richard Childress Racing–GoBowling400.com

Tifft and Peters both transferred into the second round, where Tifft earned the seventh starting position and Peters the eighth. After 170 circuits, 11 caution periods and a NASCAR overtime finish at the 1.5-mile Kansas City, Kansas facility, Peters crossed the finish line in eighth and Tifft finished 14th.

Top-Ten Finish Propels Peters to Points Lead at Kansas

Timothy Peters piloted the No. 17 Red Horse Racing Tundra to an eighth-place finish at Kansas Speedway, which boosted him into the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points lead. On Thursday, the Danville, Virginia resident was 11th, 14th and 13th-fastest in three practice sessions. On Friday afternoon, Peters transferred his red and white Tundra to the second and final round of single-truck qualifying to earn the eighth starting position for the Toyota Tundra 250. After the green flag flew on Friday evening, Peters reported a slight tight condition, but was soon happy with the No. 17 machine. The 20-minute caution clock expired on lap 45, and crew chief Shane Huffman called Peters to pit road for four tires and fuel. A rash of caution periods followed, during which Peters visited pit road for fuel only. On lap 122, the caution clock expired again, and Huffman brought Peters to pit road for another four-tire pit stop. Peters restarted in the second position and briefly took the lead before the caution flag flew again. On the following restart, Peters was battling for the lead when contact with another vehicle caused him to fall back and scrape the wall. Peters found himself in the tenth position as the final caution flag flew, sending the event into overtime. As there were only a few trucks on the lead lap, the team decided to bring Peters to pit road for four tires for the final restart. Restarting in the 13th position, Peters gained five spots to finish eighth at Kansas Speedway and claim the series’ points lead.

Timothy Peters Quote:
“We had a great Toyota Tundra tonight. I’m really proud of Shane (Huffman, crew chief) and everyone at Red Horse Racing. I just made a mistake there at the end going for the lead, and I feel like we could have gotten a much better result than eighth. I’m excited to go to Dover (International Speedway) next weekend and see what we can do there.”

Matt Tifft Earns 14th-Place Finish in First Start for Red Horse Racing

Nineteen-year-old Matt Tifft climbed aboard the No. 11 Toyota Tundra for his first race with Red Horse Racing and brought home a 14th-place finish at Kansas Speedway. After unloading on Thursday, Tifft was fast right off the bat, putting up the third, 13th and 11th fastest speeds in the three practice sessions. On Friday afternoon, the Hinckley, Ohio native transferred the No. 11 machine into the second and final round of single-truck qualifying and secured the seventh starting spot for the Toyota Tundra 250. As the sun set over the 1.5-mile facility, Tifft took the green flag. He reported a slight tight condition to crew chief Scott Zipadelli early in the race, and then felt a vibration in the right front tire, so he hit pit road for four tires under green flag conditions on lap 25. Tifft stayed out and took the wave around when the caution clock expired, then under subsequent caution periods was able to get back on the same pit sequence as the rest of the field. With 105 laps to go, Tifft had worked his way into the top 10 and as high as second-place. A four-tire stop under caution dropped the No. 11 back to 20th, but Tifft methodically worked his way back through the field, then after another four-tire stop restarted in the eighth position with 40 laps to go. On a restart at lap 135, the No. 11 sustained damage from another vehicle, resulting in a loss of handling. Tifft was able to survive a final green-white-checkered restart and finish in the 14th position.

Start – 7
Finish – 14
Driver Points Position – 27
Laps Led – 0

Matt Tifft Quote:
“Our No. 11 Toyota Tundra was really fast tonight. Scott (Zipadelli) and the guys did a great job making adjustments on it all night, and they did well getting our track position back for us. We ended up with some damage on a restart at the end, so our result wasn’t what it could have been. I’m looking forward to going to Dover (International Speedway) next weekend with this team and I think our Tundra will be fast there as well.”
