Pro Stock champ Erica Enders starts Topeka defense against Elite teammate
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 21) — Defending Pro Stock champion Erica Enders has already scored a round-win at this weekend’s NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka — and Pro Stock eliminations don’t start until Sunday.

Enders, who qualified the Elite Motorsports/Mopar Dodge in the No. 9 spot in Pro Stock, won a round in Super Gas earlier Saturday.

“That was fun to get a round-win in the Super Gas car,” Enders said. “It can take some time to get used to driving in Sportsman again, and even though I’ve driven that car this year, I’m still getting re-adjusted to it. But it was nice to win a round for Buddy and Cody.”

Enders drove the ORTEQ Energy Technologies roadster for owners Buddy Wood and Cody Ortowski this weekend. She had a second-round matchup with Bruce Johnson Saturday night, and the two-time Pro Stock champion went .019-second red and lost.

Enders’ best pass in her Pro Stock car was 6.643 seconds at 207.03 mph. The defending race champion squares off against Elite Motorsports teammate Drew Skillman in the first round.

“Drew and I are friends everywhere but on the racetrack,” Enders said. “When I put on my helmet, he becomes just another driver. It was a lot of fun to work with him last year as he made the transition to Pro Stock, and I helped him as much as I could in 2015.

“But on race day, I’m going to try to beat him like I try to beat anyone else in this class. I hate that we have to race a teammate in the first round, but we all need to qualify better.”

Skillman’s best pass this weekend was 6.642 seconds at 208.07 mph, meaning their first-round matchup could come down to who gets off the starting line first.

“May the best woman win,” Enders said. “Drew’s a great driver, and he’ll be tough to beat, but our job is to do our best to send him home early.”

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 21, 2016) – Brittany Force and the Monster Energy Top Fuel team held onto the No. 1 qualifier position at the Kansas Nationals after another competitive round of qualifying. It was Force’s second No. 1 qualifier at Heartland Park Topeka and the fourth of her career. Force’s quickest elapsed time of 3.676 seconds stands as the national record but won’t officially be recognized until the end of the event. Force will receive a bye run in the first round but the two-time 2016 winner is still focused heading into the first round. Continue reading BRITTANY FORCE, MONSTER STAY NO. 1 IN TOP FUEL

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 21) — There is plenty of fight left in Jeg Coughlin Jr. and his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart team.

Coughlin, a five-time Pro Stock champion, qualified No. 13 for the NHRA Kansas Nationals on Saturday at Heartland Park Topeka. He’ll square off against No. 4 qualifier Shane Gray in the first round Sunday — and will be a decided underdog — but Coughlin won’t go down without a fight.

Red Horse Racing–Charlotte Education Lottery 200

Red Horse Racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway

It was a home game for most NASCAR Camping World Truck Series teams as they traveled to Concord, N.C. and Charlotte Motor Speedway for the North Carolina Education Lottery 200. On Thursday, teams battled inclement weather, but were able to get one of three scheduled practice sessions in. Matt Tifft in the No. 11 Toyota Tundra was ninth fastest, while Timothy Peters was 20th on the board in the No. 17. On Friday, teams returned to the one and a half-mile facility to do battle with rainy weather. Qualifying was rained out, so the field was set per the NASCAR rule book and the race was postponed until Saturday afternoon. Tifft started ninth, while Peters rolled off from 20th. Under the noon sun, Tifft finished fifth, his best finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, and Peters seventh.

Matt Tifft Earns Best Career Series Finish at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Matt Tifft and the No. 11 NASCAR Heat Toyota Tundra team picked up a fifth-place finish in the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. This was Tifft’s best career finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Tifft was ninth fastest in the only practice session on Thursday evening, and on Friday, qualifying was rained out, so the race lineup was set per the NASCAR Rule Book. Due to the inclement weather, the race was also postponed until Saturday afternoon. When the green flag fell under sunny skies, Tifft rolled off ninth, but encountered an extremely tight handling condition on his Toyota Tundra immediately. Crew chief Scott Zipadelli called Tifft to pit road twice for four Goodyear tires and Sunoco fuel, but despite multiple adjustments, was unable to find a good balance on the Tundra. During the final caution period on lap 73, Tifft returned to pit road to top off with fuel, then was able to save enough to stay out for the rest of the race and pick up positions as other teams had to pit for fuel. Tifft finished fifth, which was his highest series finish to date.

Matt Tifft Quotes:
“We had a little bit of damage on the first lap, but we were just way too tight all day. When you have those situations and you’re in the back like that, you have to play the strategy piece. Scott Zipadelli (crew chief) did an awesome job with that, obviously bringing home my first top-five in the Truck Series.”

“It was really cool having NASCAR Heat Evolution on the truck, it’s awesome what they’re doing for the sport with video games. Red Horse Racing has worked hard this whole year and the funny thing is that we’ve had really, really fast trucks and we didn’t get the finishes we wanted. Today may be the opposite, but we’ll take top-fives as they come.”

Timothy Peters Picks Up Fourth Top-10 of 2016 at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Timothy Peters piloted the No. 17 Toyota Tundra to a seventh-place finish, his fourth top-ten in six races, at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the North Carolina Education Lottery 200. On Thursday, all but one practice session was rained out, and Peters posted the 20th fastest lap. On Friday, Mother Nature ruled the day and qualifying was canceled and the race postponed until Saturday due to inclement weather, so the field was set per the NASCAR Rule Book by practice speeds. Peters would begin the race in the 20th position. Saturday brought sunny skies in the afternoon and Peters took the green flag in 20th position, but gained six spots on the first lap as one lane was held up. Peters continued to march forward until the first caution on lap 24, when he hit pit road for four Goodyear tires and Sunoco fuel. He was in the 13th position, but a quick stop by the No. 17 team put him in the eighth spot for the restart. Peters continued to gain positions and was up to third by the next caution on lap 67, during which crew chief Shane Huffman called him to pit road for another four tire stop. Peters exited pit road with the lead. He led 11 laps before falling back. Peters had to pit under green for fuel with 12 laps to go, putting him back in the running order, but he worked his way back up to finish in the seventh position.

Start – 20
Finish – 7
Driver Points Position – 2
Owner Points Position – 2
Laps Led – 11

Timothy Peters Quote:
“Shane (Huffman, crew chief) and the guys made good adjustments after practice on Thursday. We didn’t have a good balance then, so to have a balance like we did was really encouraging in the race. We moved up really fast, but the way it cycled out at the end with fuel mileage we came up seventh, but we feel like we had a top-five Toyota Tundra.”

Hinchcliffe, Honda Lead First-Round Qualifying at Indianapolis
• Second run for Hinchcliffe secures top speed and Sunday pole effort
• Five Honda drivers qualify for “Fast Nine” pole shootout
• Sunday final qualifying to set 33-car starting field

A thrilling late-afternoon qualifying run by James Hinchcliffe of nearly 231 mph secured first-round qualifying honors Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as Honda drivers claimed the top two preliminary qualifying positions and five of the “Fast Nine” who will contend for the pole in Sunday’s final qualifying.

Just over a year after a practice-session crash resulted in life-threatening injuries for Hinchcliffe, the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver produced a four-lap average speed of 230.946 mph around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis oval to claim fastest speed of the day, with fellow Honda driver Ryan Hunter-Reay second at 230.805 mph.

Andretti Autosport drivers Townsend Bell and Carlos Munoz, fifth and eighth, respectively; and Hinchcliffe’s teammate, Mikhail Aleshin, who posted the seventh-fastest qualifying run just as time expired, also advanced to Sunday’s “Fast Nine” pole shootout.

In the third year of the current qualifying format, the nine fastest drivers from today’s first-round qualifying will contend for the pole on Sunday, with each driver making a single attempt for the coveted pole position. The remaining drivers are assured of making the “field of 33”, but will qualify again tomorrow to determine their starting positions.

Live television coverage for Sunday’s final qualifying will again be on ABC, starting at 4 p.m. EDT. The 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 will take place on Sunday, May 29, with live coverage on ABC starting at 11 a.m. EDT.

James Hinchcliffe (#5 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda) fastest in first-round qualifying: “The car was pretty good. What am I talking about? It was really good. In our first [qualifying] run, I made some mistakes. So we went back and made a couple of changes to the car, and the car was extremely consistent throughout the second run. That made the difference. Being fastest today doesn’t really mean much more than bragging rights, but it gets us in the “Fast Nine” and a shot at the pole tomorrow. That’s what we really wanted. This race track means a lot to me, to everyone in the sport. After the deal [his accident and severe injuries] a year ago, it seems like everyone in this city has supported us. I think [all the drivers] sitting up here will tell you that the competitive spirit fighting to get into the Fast Nine made for a very exciting format today.”

Marathon Petroleum’s Allen Johnson Drives to No. 7 Spot at NHRA Kansas Nationals Qualifying

TOPEKA, Kans. (May 21, 2016) – Marathon Petroleum’s Allen Johnson retained the No. 7 spot after four rounds of qualifying at the 28th annual NHRA Kansas Nationals. Johnson and his team made consistent passes during qualifying and also took the opportunity to test in the final session in hope of bettering their tune-up for future laps down the track.

In Friday’s first session, Johnson clocked in with a solid 6.647-second pass at 207.30 mph. Returning for Friday’s night session, Johnson posted an improved 6.636, 208.20.

On Saturday’s first run of the day, Johnson ran a 6.640, 208.75 and with that data, they decided to test in the final qualifying run.

“In the fourth qualifying run, we put in a different motor and did a little testing,” said Johnson. “That motor didn’t show us much but we did learn something. Hopefully what we learned will help us in the future.”

Johnson clocked in with a 6.667, 207.72 on the final qualifying run. The Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing Dodge Dart team finished qualifying No. 7 on the ladder and will have lane choice over Aaron Strong in the first round tomorrow morning.

“I think we’ve had a pretty good weekend so far,” he said. “We’ll put in our best tune-up for tomorrow and if we can get the right matchups each round and maintain lane choice each round, I think we can take the win home with us.”

SIMON PAGENAUD, NO. 22 MENARDS TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET:
ON STRATEGY TODAY IN QUALIFYING:
“It rained last night and when you get an early draw like I did, , which was great initially if it didn’t rain. But the fact that it did rain made the track really slick because it took away all the rubber we put down yesterday. We had to put some down force in the car from where we were yesterday to at least see how the car was behaving and put a lap in really. I know we are going to go back out tonight. At 6:00 the track will be amazing, and the wind is going to die down at the end of the day. That will be the time to be on the track. I think we are going to see some big numbers. That run was just a balance check really. It went pretty well. We have good balance and it was a good start.”

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 21 PREFERRED FREEZER SERVICES ED CARPENTER RACING CHEVROLET:
ON HIS QUALIFYING EFFORT:
“I’m happy. We had a great first effort. It was a strong four laps. I wish the last three were as strong as the first one. We put up a good number there then dropped about one-half of a mile-an-hour but we maintained. Strong first run. Don’t know if it is good enough to stay in the top-nine, we will have to see. I don’t want to go back out. But if we have to, I think we can find some more speed and get after it if we have to. But it is all about getting in that fast nine. Today has been hard. I think everyone had a false sense of security after practicing so good. The track was so good – the best conditions possible. Then we get to today, and I think it is even going to be worse tomorrow.

SCOTT DIXON, NO. 9 TARGET CHIP GANASSI RACING CHEVROLET:
ON TRACK CONDITIONS DURING QUALIFYING:
“Conditions were pretty tough. They are affecting everyone. This time going into turn one this is the first time this month going in to turn one with that much direct wind coming behind the car. Track temp and air temperatures were up too from the last couple of days when we have been at lower downforce levels. It was tough. I thought we were going out pretty light which is going to be hard to maintain.”
MAX CHILTON, NO. 8 GALLAGHER CHIP GANASSI RACING CHEVROLET:
INVOLVED IN AN ON-TRACK ACCIDENT DURING THE MORNING PRACTICE SESSION:
“I’m fine. A bit battered and bruised. Your first accident on an oval is never a great one. The timing is pretty bad, but that’s the issue with practice before qualifying. You just want to make sure the car is right. I felt like it was a little bit strong in the front but I don’t have the experience to know what’s too much. Now I know, I know for future reference. It was my fault. I was driving the thing, so that’s the way it goes.”

Ryan Blaney and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team missed out in their quest to earn a starting spot in the Sprint All-Star race, but they can leave Charlotte Motor Speedway with their heads held high after a strong effort in Saturday’s Sprint Showdown.

Rains in the Charlotte area on Friday meant that Blaney and his fellow Showdown participants had to start the race without a single lap of practice, something rarely – if ever – seen on the Sprint Cup circuit. Continue reading Blaney Battles Hard But Comes Up Short In Sprint Showdown

Austin Dillon Strong in Early Segments of Sprint Showdown But Slowed by Right Front Tire Issue

“We started off strong today in the Dow Chevrolet but we were definitely challenged with handling issues. It was fun to race for the lead in the first segment and lead laps in the second segment but we were too loose to stay up front. These Sprint Showdown segments are so short it doesn’t give teams a lot of time to adjust on handling issues. Still, it’s fun racing and it reminds me of my dirt track roots. You just get in the car and go. Unfortunately, we had a right-front tire going down and that’s what really derailed our day. I’m excited for the Coca-Cola 600 next weekend.”
– Austin Dillon

Paul Menard and the No. 27 Knauf/Menards Chevy Team Take Advantage of Sprint Showdown to Prepare for Next Week’s Coca-Cola 600

“We knew today’s Showdown would be interesting without having any practice time on track prior to the race. We paid attention to how the cars handled during the All-Star Race practice session this morning, which gave us a little insight into how our cars would handle for the race. Being that it’s such a short race, there isn’t much time to be patient, so you’ve just got to go for it but remain aware at the same time. Our Knauf/Menards Chevy went back and forth from being tight- to loose-handling. Our biggest issue was lack of grip, something we will think about and make note of for the Coke 600. We’ll make the best of this race and use our notes to prepare for next week.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS – Winner of Segment #3 of the Sprint Showdown and will make his first NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race start:
“We had a good Target Chevy. I knew Chase (Elliott) was going to be good on four tires and he was going to win the fan vote and I probably wasn’t going to win the fan vote. So, I did what I could do.”

ON THE FINAL LAP:
“Well if was more than just the final lap. Chase got to my inside there with 2 (laps) to go and I was able to run him pretty hard there and get him loose and was hoping I could hold him off to the checkered. I knew he’d get close. I didn’t know he would get that close there coming to the line. I had to squeeze him because I knew he was going to get the fan vote. He has a lot of fans. I knew Danica (Patrick) was going to get the fan vote also. And if Chase was to win, I wouldn’t be in. So, I had to do everything I could do to get to the start/finish line in first and luckily it paid off.”

TAKE US THROUGH TURNS 3 AND 4 WHEN HE STEPPED TO THE OUTSIDE, AND WHAT YOU HAD TO DO TO BEAT HIM
‘Yeah, I was pretty loose there towards the end. So, actually when he got to my right side, my car drove better. I had no more grip or sideforce or whatever. We ran a decent corner but he was able to slow me down enough. And he had the run. I just had to squeeze him. So, I’m sure he’s upset with me. But, it’s a non-points race and we’re going for a million bucks. I felt like I had to get it done; especially knowing that he would be in the race and I wouldn’t.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 24 3M CHEVROLET SS – Fan Vote Winner and will move on to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race:
YOU WERE RACING HARD AGAINST KYLE LARSON. TELL US ABOUT THAT
‘Yeah, Kyle did what he had to do to beat us back to the line. We had a real good run. I hate to not to race your way in. That’s pretty frustrating on my behalf. I just didn’t do a very good job. Regardless, it was great to have some great fans to get us in this race because I couldn’t get it done for us.”

DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING IN THE SHOWDOWN THAT WILL HELP YOU IN THE ALL-STAR?
“I learned a lot of what not to do. I made some real dumb big mistakes. So, we’ll not do that tonight.”

DANICA PATRICK, NO. 10 NATURE’S BAKERY CHEVROLET SS – Fan Vote Winner and will move on to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race:
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TONIGHT TO MAKE THAT CAR A LITTLE BIT BETTER?
“First and foremost, thank you to the fans. The only thing that would make this any better is if I could deliver a great finish for them and an exciting race and pass cars and make the car better for next week. I definitely felt like there were some things we could learn from getting out there. Obviously we got put in the challenging situation of having zero practice with the new package and just going out and racing. So, there were definitely some issues and we had to kind of Band-Aid them for the couple of segments that we had out there. But, I really want to do better. I feel like I was at the wrong place at the wrong time a few times out there. But on the plus side, I felt like we learned about the car. Even if we didn’t make it through, we were going to be more prepared for next weekend. But, it’s just even that much better to know that I have incredible fans that always come through. Don’t think that I don’t see social media fans. And I see all the times that people said they voted for me. So, thank you very much. I hope you give you something fun to watch tonight.”

JOHN FORCE POST QUALIFYING ROUND 2 QUOTE

TOPEKA, Kansas (May 20, 2016) – During second round qualifying for the NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka, John Force made contact with the left lane wall in his John Force Racing Peak/Chevrolet Camaro SS. Contact with the wall was significant enough to damage both the chassis and body beyond repair and the team is forced to go with a new backup car for the remainder of the weekend. The body on the damaged car was the first based on the sixth-generation Camaro SS and was making its debut this weekend at Topeka.

WHAT HAPPENED OUT THERE AND CAN YOU GET THIS NEW CAMARO BODY BACK OUT THERE FOR THE REST OF THE WEEKEND?

JOHN FORCE
“First of all I want to apologize to all the Chevrolet enthusiasts out there, everyone that worked on this car and helped design it. The first run that we made with the car…..there are two different kinds of shake. There is an aggressive shake and a weak shake and on those two types, you have to know which way to pedal it. If its weak, it’s got to be real quick snap of the pedal to get off and get back on to catch it. And that is what I did on the first run, it was weak. It still ran 4.10 and put me in the top 12 in the show and ran a 327 or 326 something. So it cut the air, steered perfect, and the view was awesome. Everything was good about it. So we went back to work and said we have to get after this thing because the conditions were getting better. (on the second run) It left hard, did the same thing. People had been running some big numbers and when it rattled again so I tried to catch it quicker thinking it was a weak shake. I was thinking I could step up and put myself higher in the show. Well, it was an aggressive shake which means I should have got out of it and waited. But I didn’t know. And right as I went back to hit it, you can see on the video that it was starting to turn and it’s just enough when you hit that throttle its sideways and it put me straight into the wall. It’s a shame because of all the hard work. We can’t fix it and it will have to go back, and go back in the mold. And that is all we can do right now.”

TALK ABOUT YOUR OUTLOOK FOR THIS WEEKEND
‘We’re obviously excited to be in the All-Star race. I think when you look at this particular weekend, there’s obviously a lot on the line, but there really isn’t.
