Richard Childress Racing–Sprint Showdown

Austin Dillon Strong in Early Segments of Sprint Showdown But Slowed by Right Front Tire Issue

“We started off strong today in the Dow Chevrolet but we were definitely challenged with handling issues. It was fun to race for the lead in the first segment and lead laps in the second segment but we were too loose to stay up front. These Sprint Showdown segments are so short it doesn’t give teams a lot of time to adjust on handling issues. Still, it’s fun racing and it reminds me of my dirt track roots. You just get in the car and go. Unfortunately, we had a right-front tire going down and that’s what really derailed our day. I’m excited for the Coca-Cola 600 next weekend.”
– Austin Dillon

Paul Menard and the No. 27 Knauf/Menards Chevy Team Take Advantage of Sprint Showdown to Prepare for Next Week’s Coca-Cola 600

“We knew today’s Showdown would be interesting without having any practice time on track prior to the race. We paid attention to how the cars handled during the All-Star Race practice session this morning, which gave us a little insight into how our cars would handle for the race. Being that it’s such a short race, there isn’t much time to be patient, so you’ve just got to go for it but remain aware at the same time. Our Knauf/Menards Chevy went back and forth from being tight- to loose-handling. Our biggest issue was lack of grip, something we will think about and make note of for the Coke 600. We’ll make the best of this race and use our notes to prepare for next week.”

TEAM CHEVY DRIVER RACE NOTES & QUOTES
MAY 21, 2016

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS – Winner of Segment #3 of the Sprint Showdown and will make his first NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race start:
“We had a good Target Chevy. I knew Chase (Elliott) was going to be good on four tires and he was going to win the fan vote and I probably wasn’t going to win the fan vote. So, I did what I could do.”

ON THE FINAL LAP:
“Well if was more than just the final lap. Chase got to my inside there with 2 (laps) to go and I was able to run him pretty hard there and get him loose and was hoping I could hold him off to the checkered. I knew he’d get close. I didn’t know he would get that close there coming to the line. I had to squeeze him because I knew he was going to get the fan vote. He has a lot of fans. I knew Danica (Patrick) was going to get the fan vote also. And if Chase was to win, I wouldn’t be in. So, I had to do everything I could do to get to the start/finish line in first and luckily it paid off.”

TAKE US THROUGH TURNS 3 AND 4 WHEN HE STEPPED TO THE OUTSIDE, AND WHAT YOU HAD TO DO TO BEAT HIM
‘Yeah, I was pretty loose there towards the end. So, actually when he got to my right side, my car drove better. I had no more grip or sideforce or whatever. We ran a decent corner but he was able to slow me down enough. And he had the run. I just had to squeeze him. So, I’m sure he’s upset with me. But, it’s a non-points race and we’re going for a million bucks. I felt like I had to get it done; especially knowing that he would be in the race and I wouldn’t.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 24 3M CHEVROLET SS – Fan Vote Winner and will move on to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race:
YOU WERE RACING HARD AGAINST KYLE LARSON. TELL US ABOUT THAT
‘Yeah, Kyle did what he had to do to beat us back to the line. We had a real good run. I hate to not to race your way in. That’s pretty frustrating on my behalf. I just didn’t do a very good job. Regardless, it was great to have some great fans to get us in this race because I couldn’t get it done for us.”

DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING IN THE SHOWDOWN THAT WILL HELP YOU IN THE ALL-STAR?
“I learned a lot of what not to do. I made some real dumb big mistakes. So, we’ll not do that tonight.”

DANICA PATRICK, NO. 10 NATURE’S BAKERY CHEVROLET SS – Fan Vote Winner and will move on to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race:
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TONIGHT TO MAKE THAT CAR A LITTLE BIT BETTER?
“First and foremost, thank you to the fans. The only thing that would make this any better is if I could deliver a great finish for them and an exciting race and pass cars and make the car better for next week. I definitely felt like there were some things we could learn from getting out there. Obviously we got put in the challenging situation of having zero practice with the new package and just going out and racing. So, there were definitely some issues and we had to kind of Band-Aid them for the couple of segments that we had out there. But, I really want to do better. I feel like I was at the wrong place at the wrong time a few times out there. But on the plus side, I felt like we learned about the car. Even if we didn’t make it through, we were going to be more prepared for next weekend. But, it’s just even that much better to know that I have incredible fans that always come through. Don’t think that I don’t see social media fans. And I see all the times that people said they voted for me. So, thank you very much. I hope you give you something fun to watch tonight.”

JOHN FORCE POST QUALIFYING ROUND 2 QUOTE

TOPEKA, Kansas (May 20, 2016) – During second round qualifying for the NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka, John Force made contact with the left lane wall in his John Force Racing Peak/Chevrolet Camaro SS. Contact with the wall was significant enough to damage both the chassis and body beyond repair and the team is forced to go with a new backup car for the remainder of the weekend. The body on the damaged car was the first based on the sixth-generation Camaro SS and was making its debut this weekend at Topeka.

WHAT HAPPENED OUT THERE AND CAN YOU GET THIS NEW CAMARO BODY BACK OUT THERE FOR THE REST OF THE WEEKEND?

JOHN FORCE
“First of all I want to apologize to all the Chevrolet enthusiasts out there, everyone that worked on this car and helped design it. The first run that we made with the car…..there are two different kinds of shake. There is an aggressive shake and a weak shake and on those two types, you have to know which way to pedal it. If its weak, it’s got to be real quick snap of the pedal to get off and get back on to catch it. And that is what I did on the first run, it was weak. It still ran 4.10 and put me in the top 12 in the show and ran a 327 or 326 something. So it cut the air, steered perfect, and the view was awesome. Everything was good about it. So we went back to work and said we have to get after this thing because the conditions were getting better. (on the second run) It left hard, did the same thing. People had been running some big numbers and when it rattled again so I tried to catch it quicker thinking it was a weak shake. I was thinking I could step up and put myself higher in the show. Well, it was an aggressive shake which means I should have got out of it and waited. But I didn’t know. And right as I went back to hit it, you can see on the video that it was starting to turn and it’s just enough when you hit that throttle its sideways and it put me straight into the wall. It’s a shame because of all the hard work. We can’t fix it and it will have to go back, and go back in the mold. And that is all we can do right now.”

Mooresville, NC (May 18, 2016)—With seven wins at seven races, Team Summit Racing continues to dominate the 2016 NHRA Race Series in Pro Stock. This weekend Jason Line and Greg Anderson go for win number eight in their KB Racing Chevrolet Camaros at the 28th Annual NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

Anderson is eager to get back behind the wheel and race in Topeka.

“I’m excited that we get to try it again in a few days. When you have a slight advantage like we have, you want to race every day,” said Anderson. “We look forward to Topeka and the chance to get another Wally.”

Heartland Park Topeka has been good to Anderson over the years. He’s won as a driver four times, and five times while working for Warren Johnson.

Line is looking for his first win at Heartland Park Topeka.

“I’m still working on my relationship with Topeka. It’s been a tough place for me,” said Line. “Hopefully this year I can finally fix that.”

Summit Racing Funny Car driver Tim Wilkerson is also ready to win at Heartland Park Topeka. He has been in the final round twice in Topeka and wants a win at one of his favorite tracks.

“I’m always a fan of Topeka. It’s home for the Kansas City group from Levi, Ray & Shoup. We always get a lot of good people that come out and root for us,” said Wilkerson. “I’m excited to go there and hopefully rebound from the Atlanta race.”
