Chicago would be great place for Auto Club
driver Robert Hight to score first win of 2017

JOLIET, Ill. (July 3) – After a runner-up finish in the most recent NHRA race, in Norwalk, Ohio, Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS driver Robert Hight figures there is only one more step to make in the next race: Win.

That’s the goal for Hight and his John Force Racing team in the Fallen Patriots Route 66 NHRA Nationals this weekend at Route 66 Raceway. Hight raced to the final in Norwalk but an issue with the clutch caused him to smoke the tires and come up short.

“We want to go and build on a runner-up finish that we had in Norwalk and put four good runs on Sunday together,” Hight said. “We know we can do it. We’ve just got to get it done. We came up one round short last week. The way I look at it, there’s only one way to go from there, and that’s get that fourth run in.” Continue reading Chicago would be great place for Auto Club driver Robert Hight to score first win of 2017

busy week is capped by Chicago victory

JOLIET, Ill. (July 3) – A full week of activity leading up to the Fallen Patriots Route 66 NHRA Nationals this weekend at Route 66 Raceway will keep PEAK Coolant and Motor Oil Chevrolet Camaro SS driver John Force busy.

But the 16-time NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Funny Car champion wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s going to be a busy week,” Force said. “I’m excited about it. I’m excited about my race car, too.”

Force’s sponsor, Old World Industries, is based in the Chicago suburb of Northbrook, Ill., and Force will make a stop there Thursday morning.

But that’s only one of many appearances, highlighted by throwing out the first pitch before the World Champion Chicago Cubs play the Tampa Bay Rays at historic Wrigley Field on Wednesday. PEAK is a sponsor of the Cubs, as well. Continue reading PEAK Funny Car driver John Force hopes busy week is capped by Chicago victory

Scott Returns from Retirement to Compete at Iowa and Kentucky

WELCOME, N.C. (July 3, 2017) – Brian Scott will return to Richard Childress Racing (RCR) to pilot the No. 3 Daniel Defense Chevrolet for two races in the NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) this season. After announcing his NASCAR retirement at the end of 2016 to move home to Idaho with his family, Scott will make a brief return to the sport with his former team to pilot the No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro for the second NXS race at Iowa Speedway on July 29 and the September 23rd race at Kentucky Speedway.

“Everyone at RCR is pleased to have Brian Scott back in one of our cars, even if it’s only for a couple of races,” said Richard Childress, Chairman and CEO of RCR. “He is a great friend of the company and did well for us in the past. We appreciate that he’s going to come out of retirement to drive our No. 3 Chevrolet. I have no doubt that once Brian is behind the wheel again, he will have the same desire to win that he’s had in the past.”

Daniel Defense, a leading manufacturer of premium firearms, rail systems and accessories, joined RCR at the start of the season to sponsor the No. 3 Chevrolet in select races. These two races with Scott will be Daniel Defense’s final primary sponsorship races of the year, but their associate sponsorship will continue throughout 2017. Earlier this season, Ty Dillon drove the Daniel Defense Chevrolet to a 10th-place finish at Dover International Speedway.

Prior to his retirement, Scott drove three full-time NXS seasons for RCR from 2013-2015. He finished as high as fourth (2014) in the championship point standings. An avid outdoorsman and a veteran NASCAR racer, Scott is a natural fit for the No. 3 Daniel Defense Chevrolet.

“I’m looking forward to climbing back into a RCR Chevrolet,” said Brian Scott. “Iowa and Kentucky were good tracks for our team. I have no doubt that with the advanced engineering and work they’ve put into their programs since then that we will be even stronger. These two races are all about having fun and, I hope, getting the No. 3 team to Victory Lane.”

Garcia, Magnussen fight back for third in GTLM; Milner, Gavin salvage top-five finish

WATKINS GLEN, New York (July 2, 2017) – Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen placed third in the GT Le Mans class at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen on Sunday – a nice boost in their run for the GTLM Driver’s Championship. The duo in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C7.R extended their points lead, and Chevrolet maintained its lead in GTLM Manufacturer’s points.

Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner, driving the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C7.R, finished fifth in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s annual trip to Watkins Glen International. The team had hopes of scoring a second victory in four tries at the historic New York road course.

Garcia, Magnussen and the rest of the No. 3 Corvette squad clawed back from an early spin to contend for Corvette Racing’s fourth consecutive win in GTLM competition. Garcia and Magnussen steadily worked their way back up the class order and took the lead for the first time with less than two hours to go. The No. 3 Corvette led twice despite lacking the outright pace of the other GTLM runners. • Andy Lally, Katherine Legge score second consecutive win for Acura NSX GT3
• Victory at six-hour Watkins Glen endurance contest follows sprint race win in Detroit
• Suspension failure following contact prevents podium result for Jeff Segal, Ozz Negri

WATKINS GLEN, NY (July 2, 2017) – The Michael Shank Racing Acura duo of Andy Lally and Katherine Legge scored its second consecutive GTD class victory of the 2017 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season Sunday at Watkins Glen International Raceway, starting from the pole and leading much of the six-hour endurance contest to take the checkers in their Acura NSX GT3.

Today’s victory on the sweeping, 2.4-mile Watkins Glen circuit – one of the fastest tracks on the IMSA schedule – follows last month’s equally emphatic victory for Acura, Lally and Legge at the Detroit Grand Prix street circuit, the tightest track on the circuit and one of only two sprint races on the schedule. Both victories serve to highlight the impressive scope of development work on the NSX GT3, which is in its first year of world-class sports car competition. Late Crash Leaves Blaney 26th At Daytona

Late Crash Leaves Blaney 26th At Daytona

July 2, 2017

Ryan Blaney and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion were major players for the majority of Saturday’s Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

But a multi-car crash with six of the race’s scheduled 160 laps left to run ended Blaney’s night and left him with a 26th-place finish.

Up to that point, he’d been able to move through the field at will and led the race for nine circuits, from Lap 127 to Lap 135.

Just prior to the crash that ended his night, Blaney was racing for the top spot, chose the inside lane, but got no drafting help. He dropped back outside the top 20 but was on his way back to the front when Kyle Larson lost control, made contact with another car and sailed into the air right in front of Blaney, who was against the outside wall and had no escape route. Damage Hinders Top-Five Run for Ben Kennedy at Daytona International Speedway

“We had a extremely fast and well balanced Rheem Chevrolet this weekend at Daytona. It’s always fun to know when you’re hopping in one of these RCR cars with that ECR horsepower, that you’ll have a chance of taking it to the winner’s circle. I hate we got stuck back in the back near the end, especially after running up front for most of the race. A 15th-place finish just doesn’t seem right for this team. I’m proud of Randall Burnett and this entire team and can’t wait to get back behind the wheel at Loudon in a couple weeks.”

– Ben Kennedy

Ty Dillon’s Strong Day in Daytona Ended by Final-Stage Accident

“We had a strong No. 3 Bass Pro Shops Chevy today. I could drive it up to the front and stay there. In the first two stages I was able to work with my teammate Ben Kennedy a lot, and we could help each other get to the front of the line. We were having a great day. Obviously, being wrecked while leading the bottom lane was not how we’d hoped to finish out our day. I thought we’d be able to at least come back in the last 10 laps once we got everything fixed to get a top 15 finish out of it, but we got caught up in the overtime wreck too. We’ve been fast at every superspeedway this year but we just keep getting hit with bad luck. This was our last one of the year though, so we’ll put this behind us and turn our focus to Kentucky.”

– Ty Dillon

Daniel Hemric’s No. 21 Blue Gate Bank Chevrolet Caught Up In Late-Race Wreck at Daytona International Speedway

“Coming here to Daytona, the first thing was to try and make it to the first pit stop – something we haven’t been able to do all year at the superspeedways. We accomplished that goal. We got some stage points early. We played our strategy and hung out toward the back in the middle part of the race. We were making good progress toward the front of the pack in our Blue Gate Bank Chevrolet with a couple of laps to go. I got caught up in typical superspeedway racing. I’m not sure what I’ve got to do to finish one of these things, but we made a lot of headway today making a lot of laps.”

– Daniel Hemric

Brandon Jones Rallies to Top-20 Finish After Late-Race Wreck

“We were doing everything right with this race. Our No. 33 Rain-X / Advance Auto Parts Chevrolet was excellent and able to do basically whatever I wanted on the track. After we got taken out in the first two plate races from the front in the Stage 1, we decided to hang back for the first stage this time around. The weather delays changed our strategy for the rest of the race, but we adjusted and had a shot at the win before we got turned with just a few laps left. I’m so proud of this team though for pushing through and fixing up the car enough for us to pick up some spots and finish the race in the top-20. That’s real teamwork and what will help us make the Chase.”

– Brandon Jones

Brendan Gaughan Pilots the USAF Special Tactics / South Point Chevrolet to Top-10 Finish at Daytona International Speedway

“We were smart once and lucky twice, and that’s what it takes at Daytona. We had a great USAF Special Tactics Chevrolet today. There is a military term ‘SA’ which means situational awareness. When the Special Tactics operators knock down doors and go places they have to know what’s around them. You have to understand what is around you and what is with you, and that’s what you have to do at Daytona. We had good ‘SA’ and pulled back before the first wreck. In the end we tried to find the right teammates and people to work with and draft with, and got a solid top-10 finish. Well take it!”

Austin Dillon and the No. 3 American Ethanol Team Sidelined by Multi-Car Incident at Daytona International Speedway

“I didn’t see exactly what happened during the multi-car incident that ended our night early so am not sure. I tried to slow down. I downshifted but it wasn’t enough. We knocked the oil cooler and radiator out. It’s just part of this deal–you have to shove yourself in a bad position. I should have been smarter and rode around like half of the others in the field, but we were trying to get some bonus points coming to the end of the stage. It didn’t work out. Overall, though, I was proud to carry the American Ethanol patriotic paint scheme this weekend and close out the NASCAR Salutes refreshed by Coca-Cola program by honoring U.S. Military Veterans. It was cool to meet a group of them at the track this weekend and I’m thankful for their service.”

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (July 1, 2017) – In a typically wild race at Daytona International Speedway, Paul Menard brought his No. 27 Moen/Menards Chevrolet SS across the finish line in third place in the Coke Zero 400 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race (MENCS). It marked his fifth top 10 finish in 21 races at Daytona International Speedway.

PAUL MENARD, NO. 27 MOEN/MENARDS CHEVROLET SS – Finished 3rd
“We really didn’t want to hang out in the back, but we got involved in a wreck really early and once you get back there, it is really hard to get back up to the front. I was just waiting for something to happen at the end of those stages. We weren’t in the top-15 so I just bailed out of the pack for the stages. I had a really good handling car from yesterday in the draft practice. All weekend long it handled really well. I knew it would race really well tonight. Bowyer gave me a hell of a push that last lap. I wasn’t very good at leading, being the first guy in a line. With Ricky (Stenhouse) breaking the air, I couldn’t run off to the start/finish line. We just have to keep doing this. If you run in the top–five you put yourself in position for wins. We definitely had a shot tonight, I just couldn’t get a run off of turn four even with Bowyer pushing me. I just didn’t have the run I had the lap before. I thought we had a chance to win this one, just couldn’t get the run.”

Fast Qualifying Lap At Daytona Earns Blaney His 12th Top-10 Start of 2017

June 30, 2017

Ryan Blaney and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team continued their run of success in Monster Energy Cup qualifying with a ninth-place performance at Daytona International Speedway on Friday.

It was the 12th time in 17 races this season that Blaney has qualified ninth or better.

The Motorcraft/Quick Lane team unloaded a fast Ford Fusion at Daytona. Blaney, who finished second in his last race on the 2.5-mile track, was fifth fastest in the opening practice session with a best lap at 197.165 miles per hour. The team elected to skip the Happy Hour session on Thursday.

On Friday, Blaney was seventh fastest in the opening qualifying session with a lap at 189.765 mph. Then he ran a tick of the clock quicker at 189.785 mph in the final round to secure the ninth starting spot for Saturday’s Coke Zero 400.

“We were consistent,” Blaney told reporters after qualifying. “I think our car has good speed, maybe not as much speed as you want in qualifying but I think our race car is going to be pretty fast (on Saturday night).

“We can see the front, which is nice.”

Saturday’s 400-miler is scheduled to get the green flag just after 7:30 p.m. with TV coverage on NBC.

DALE EARNHARDT JR., NO. 88 NATIONWIDE CHEVROLET SS – Pole Winner:
ON WINNING THE POLE:
“I have to give Hendrick Motorsports a lot of credit, particularly for me personally it has been the No. 24 (Chase Elliott) bunch. We’ve been kind of pushing each other over the last several years in qualifying at Talladega and Daytona. It’s been a healthy competition. That’s why we win poles and qualify so well at some of these race tracks is a healthy competition within the company. Greg and all the guys deserve all the credit for the car. I don’t do anything in qualifying except hold the wheel and make sure I don’t hit the apron. The car does everything. A lot of credit to the power and the body man back at the shop. All that stuff is so critical and they did a great job today.”

HOW MUCH CONFIDENCE DO YOU HAVE GOING INTO THE RACE TOMORROW WITH POLE WIN?
“I’ll be honest with you, this track is a little slick and starting to age. I think that all of the competitors and crew chiefs need to probably consider spending a little more time drafting and put a few more laps on the cars. I sure would have liked to have that opportunity to get in a little larger pack yesterday. I saw some things from my car that are concerning as far as the balance and I don’t know if a lot of guys got themselves in that situation. We used to practice and run a lot of laps. But these days with the repave we have kind of calmed down on practice. Nobody really practices that much. The track is getting slick again. I think guys just need to practice more. I would have liked to have done a little more. That’s all I’m saying. Hopefully our car handles good. At night our car is going to have a lot of grip. We’ll see how that all works out.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 24 NAPA PATRIOTIC CHEVROLET SS – Qualified 2nd:
IS IT ANY BETTER OR WORSE TO MISS WINNING THE POLE TO A TEAMMATE?
“It was definitely close. I’m happy for those guys. It’s so hard to tell when you’re out there making laps how it’s going to be or if you did anything any better. But I’m proud of our NAPA Chevy team. We improved a little bit, I think, from Round 1 to Round 2, which was nice. We just didn’t improve enough. So, we’ll go to work tomorrow. I’m excited for this race. It’s such a cool race here at Daytona under the lights. If you’ve never been here, this is one to come and watch for sure. I think it’s going to be exciting. That guy (Dale Earnhardt Jr., ) starting on the pole is obviously fast and I’ve just got to get in front of him.”

IS THERE AN ADVANTAGE TO HAVING THREE HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS CARS IN THE TOP FOUR TO START THE RACE?
“I don’t know. It’s such a long race. I think if we can all be in those positions later in the race and as the race continues to unwind, if we can all show strength, there is certainly strength in numbers and if those numbers are on your side, that’s a good thing. When it comes to making pit stops and the strategies and how all these manufacturers run these racers now, we can run well, not just in qualifying, but throughout the entire race, that’s an advantage; not just qualifying well. So, we’ll see about that.”

KASEY KAHNE, NO. 5 UNIFIRST CHEVROLET SS – Qualified 4th
THE CAR LOOKED GREAT OUT THERE. HOW DID IT FEEL?
“It felt really good. It felt good yesterday, The UniFirst Chevrolet felt good again today in both Rounds. I think the Hendrick power shows. We’ve got two in the front row and we’re right there in fourth.”

YOU HAVE THAT CHANCE TO SILENCE EVERYBODY WITH A WIN TOMORROW NIGHT. HOW DO YOU PUT ALL OF THAT TOGETHER TO HAVE THE BEST NIGHT THAT YOU CAN?
“I think it started yesterday in practice. We had a really strong practice. This is the same car we ran in the 500, which I thought was a really strong car. The guys stepped up wherever it needed to in the 500 and it felt that way again yesterday. Yeah, I’m looking forward to it. We just need to stay out of trouble and be in a good position late and go for it.”

of John Force Racing, PEAK Chevrolet team

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (June 30) – Biologists teach that evolution can a slow process, often taking hundreds or thousands of years.

Evolution happens in drag racing, too, and while the process doesn’t take nearly as long, it can be slow and sometimes painful.

Evolution continues at John Force Racing, and a test by John Force and the PEAK Coolant and Motor Oil Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car continued that development.

Force drove the car tuned by crew chief Mike Neff and co-crew chief Jon Schaffer at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis on Thursday, making four solid, straight passes with good performance.

TY DILLON, NO. 13 GEICO MILITARY CHEVROLET SS, met with media and discussed his throwback paint scheme for the upcoming Darlington race, his season to date, the stage races, and more. Full Transcript:

REGARDING DARLINGTON PAINT SCHEME
“As far as for me, the history and tradition behind the Yunick family, the race team and NASCAR…..there is so much history behind what their family has done in this sport. So, it’s quite the honor them at Darlington in what has become one of the coolest events of the year with the throwback scheme and this is a really awesome car. I know a lot of people are a little superstitious about the number 13 and there is a lot of history that goes back in the sport, but there is also a lot of history yet to be gained. Johnny Rutherford won a qualifying race here in Daytona and that is the only win that has come about for a 13 car. Hearing that gets me a little bit excited about being able to be the first Cup driver to win a points-paying race in the number 13. So, it’s cool to pay homage back to a family and a race team that means so much to our sport, the history, and getting it all started at a track that is the oldest in our sport too. I’m excited, it’s a cool looking car, cool looking hat, and it’s going to be a fun weekend. Everybody loves that whole Darlington throwback that was started a couple of years ago. Very excited and can’t wait.”

SO YOU AREN’T SUPERSTITIOUS ABOUT THAT?
“I am not superstitious. I think you create your own luck in this sport. I actually like having the number 13 and like having other people being more worried about it than I am. (laughs)”

WHAT ABOUT HERE AT DAYTONA?
“Ah, it’s like anywhere else. Luck is sometimes you create it and I feel like here at Daytona you feel like there is a lot of luck that is involved and there is. But you can change that percentage of how much you rely on luck to finish the race just by running good and putting yourself in good position throughout the race. Knowing your surroundings and knowing the situation, you can help your percentages on that. I think a good driver can find his way and still be racing at the end of these races.”

RATE YOUR SEASON SO FAR IN WHERE YOU EXPECTED TO BE AND WHERE YOU ARE
“Yeah, it’s kind of weird and I have been coming here my whole life and the guy that is first in points is always in that garage stall. That was kind of a goal of mine and every time I walked by and I was like, ‘I want to have that garage stall one day’. Well, we are 23rd in points and we have that garage stall. So that kind of killed that for me. Now I want to be on the other end. So, we are working on it and it’s been a good start to the year for me in coming to a new race team, a new group of guys, a new series. I had some starts in years past but I don’t know if there were two or three consecutive starts with the same crew chief or same team. So, it’s been good to build that continuity over the first half of this year and I am really looking forward to coming back to some of these tracks the second time. Bootie (Barker, crew chief) has had to learn me, Bootie and the guys have had to learn me. Hopefully through the first round of all these tracks we have created a box of where they know the kinds of things that I need in the race car to go out and compete. We have had some really good races that we have run inside the top ten and have been very competitive. And every time you do that, you get a little bit better. You get the feeling that when you are running around in the top five or top ten against these guys that end up winning the races you get a little more comfortable in knowing what you need to go out and get better. So going back to these places a second time as a driver and knowing what I am looking for at these places in a Cup car helps a lot. So, I am looking forward to more improvement but I think it’s been a good season so far. I would give it about a C+. I feel like there have been some times where we can do some things better, but I think we have surprised a few people with how competitive we have been. I know deep down we are capable of a lot more.”

THERE WASN’T A LOT OF DRAFTING IN PRACTICE SO NO ONE REALLY KNOWS WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE RACE, WHAT ABOUT QUALIFYING?
“You know, qualifying is qualifying at superspeedways. We have no emphasis as far as our Geico Military Chevy to qualify very well, we are more focused on racing well here. So, we didn’t do any qualifying runs and we actually went out there with the RCR cars and a couple of Hendrick cars and drafted as much as possible and worked on our race car mainly making sure I am comfortable and things like my mirror are in the right positions so that I am aware of who is around me. It was really, really hot so that was something I was able to practice and making sure that my feet and everything are going to be comfortable. They were blazing hot in practice so we are going to do some things to make sure I am comfortable in the car during the race. Which I am very thankful for, for tomorrow night. It’s kind of a simple approach here right up until the race starts and it gets chaotic and then the real race weekend starts. So, for us we are not focused on qualifying or the pole we are more focused on finishing the race and running good.”

YOU USUALLY DON’T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE RACE UNTIL THE RACE UNFOLDS
“Not a lot of people seem to be putting a lot of emphasis on qualifying. More or less everybody is focused on getting those stage points and winning the race on Saturday night.”

REGARDING IF YOUR TEAM IS IN COLLABORATION WITH RCR AND IF YOU TALK TO BROTHER AUSTIN A LOT ON RACE WEEKENDS AND HOW DOES THAT WORK?
“Yeah, I think a lot of people think the collaboration between Germain Racing and RCR has changed a lot, and it has because I am driving for Germain. But Germain and RCR have been working together for several years before I even stepped into this ride. That relationship and that amount of information has not changed at all. It’s mainly that I am part of the family and I talk to my brother all the time, I talk to my grandfather, and actually this relationship with Germain has taken a bit of pressure off of me in being under the wing of my grandfather as the team owner. It’s been nice for me this year and I have been able to relax in my own body and have my grandfather at the race track as a grandfather. And I have my brother at the race track as a brother that I can talk to. We do have similar cars and we are not afraid to bounce information off of each other, but for me I think the better thing is that my dad and my grandfather are not my owners and my bosses but can just be my dad and my grandfather. That helps me just be myself at the race track and makes me a better me I feel like.”

TALK ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL LIFE, THAT SEEMS TO BE GOING PRETTY WELL RIGHT NOW
“Yeah, it’s going great and we are about halfway through our first pregnancy and I am looking forward to meeting our little girl. She has been kicking the side of Haley’s belly and every week it’s been something new and exciting. We have been very, very blessed and I hope she continues to grow and be healthy.”

YOU TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT POSITIONING. HOW IS THAT AFFECTED BY THE STAGE RACES, AND HOW DO YOU GET SET UP FOR THAT?
“It’s tough being a rookie and not knowing totally what to expect. Our strategy has been to run hard and try and get ourselves in position. When you get within ten laps of a stage ending and you are in a spot where you can be in that top ten and get points, then we are going to stay up there and battle and stay up in it. If we are in tenth to fifteenth/sixteenth and you can kind of feel the animosity growing at the end of these stages on whether you feel like there is going to be a crash or not happening. And that comes down to me feeling it or my spotter Billy O feeling it. As you do this more and more, you can kind of feel if a crash is coming and it’s going to be really hairy coming down the line. So, we have been kind of playing that by ear and if we feel like we are in a good spot where we can be ahead of a crash, we stay in it and try and get those stage points. If not, it’s better for us to get back out of it and go to the back and regroup for the next stage and see how that plays out. But the main thing for us is being there at the end of this race and getting the full points at the end of the race.”
