Franchitti Qualifies Second at Edmonton

Franchitti Qualifies Second at Edmonton

Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti continued his streak of impressive IZOD IndyCar Series
qualifying runs Saturday at the Edmonton City Centre Airport. The Honda-powered Target Chip Ganassi
Racing driver posted the second-fastest time in the final, “Fast Six” qualifying round, and will start
Sunday’s Edmonton Indy from the pole due to a 10-position penalty for an unapproved engine change in
the car of pole qualifier Ryan Hunter-Reay. It will be the fourth consecutive front-row start for Franchitti, a
streak that began at Texas Motor Speedway in June.

The final two rounds of “knockout” qualifying were affected by changing weather conditions around the
Edmonton airport circuit, as a brief shower just prior to the second round resulted in a wet track for all
competitors. The track began to dry near the end of the 15-minute session, leading to constant position
changes during the final minutes.

The “Fast Six” qualifying round began on a dry track, but rain again began to fall in the final minute,
affecting the final runs from Franchitti; 2011 Edmonton pole qualifier Takuma Sato, who will start fourth;
and fifth-qualifying Alex Tagliani. Sunday’s 75-lap race starts at 2:30 p.m. EDT, with live television
coverage on the NBC Sports Network.

Dario Franchitti (#10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) second quickest in qualifying, his fourth
consecutive front-row start in 2012:
“It was fairly interesting out there. The car was working well, but it
started to rain right at the end of the first round, and it was wet throughout the second. But by the ‘Fast
Six’ [final qualifying round] it was starting to dry out, and the question became whether to use new [softer]
‘Red’ tires, or run scrubbed tires. We took a gamble and went with used Reds. It almost paid off, as we
came within a hundredth [of a second] of Ryan’s time. But we’re starting at the front, and I think we’re in
good shape for the race tomorrow.”

Dixon Runs Second in Tight Edmonton Field

Dixon Runs Second in Tight Edmonton Field

Detroit race winner Scott Dixon paced the Honda-powered entries Friday at the Edmonton City Centre
airport temporary circuit, posting the second-fastest time in a tight field during IZOD IndyCar Series
practice in preparation for Sunday’s Edmonton Indy. After two sessions, less than one half-second
separated the top 18 drivers in the 25-car field, with Mike Conway and Simon Pagenaud also posting top-
four times on the day.

Alex Tagliani, Dario Franchitti and Justin Wilson made it six Honda drivers in the top eight, while
Pagenaud led a Honda sweep of the top eight positions in morning practice.

IZOD IndyCar Series activities in Edmonton continue Saturday, with final practice and “Fast Six” knockout
qualifying. Sunday’s 75-lap race starts at 2:30 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on the NBC Sports
Network.

Scott Dixon (#9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) second quickest in Friday practice: “I’m happy
with my car; it seems pretty decent. At one point, I was up [on the field] by three or four tenths [of a
second], but came up on a slower car and ruined that lap. We really didn’t get another chance for a clear
lap. But I’m confident we have a strong car. With rain forecast for qualifying, it should be an exciting
show for the fans tomorrow. There are a lot of good passing points on this track, and it’s going to be a
heck of a race.”

Solid Start Slots Anderson Third in Atlanta

Solid Start Slots Anderson Third in Atlanta

Event:  32nd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals

Location: Atlanta Dragway, Commerce, Georgia

Day/Date: Friday, May 4, 2012

Summit Racing driver Greg Anderson got off to a good start on Friday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Ga. posting the third-quickest run in each of the two sessions.  After opening with a 6.647-second, 208.17 mph pass, he picked up the pace on his second attempt, improving to a 6.625-second elapsed time and a top speed of 208.62 mph.

Having established a strong baseline for his Atlanta Dragway tune-up, Anderson looked forward to the final two sessions on Saturday, where he hoped to further improve his standing for Sunday’s final eliminations.

“My Summit Racing Pontiac made two solid runs today,” said Anderson.  “Of course, we always want to be faster, but we have a good tuning base for tomorrow.  I do feel like the morning session will be the best, so it was important to put it through the goal posts twice today, giving us a good direction with the tune-up.  I think we’re close, and hopefully we’ll chisel on her a little bit overnight and get even closer yet.

“Obviously, Jason’s (teammate and provisional No. 1 qualifier Line) car is fast again and it looks like Ronnie’s (Humphrey in the Genuine Hot Rod Hardware Pontiac, who currently sits 4th) is in the ball park, giving us three cars in the top four today.  Hopefully, tomorrow we can come out and make it three out of three.”

Wild Brothers Racing

Wild Brothers Racing began the Land Speed season last weekend.  Bill Warner flew to TX to meet up with Billy Shoemaker for the season’s opener at the Texas Mile in Beeville TX.  Billy Shoemaker is riding the “Streetbike” this year and Bill Warner will be riding the others, but not until June after he is fully recovered from his bad accident back in October 2011.

The weekend did not go as planned.  First run of the meet was a test run to check the tune on the bike.  On this test run, we turned off the AMS1000 boost controler and ran on spring pressure plus what ever little boost creep there is.  The bike is set up beautifully and ran 240mph, not realizing the incredible speed the bike did on its lowest setting, Billy went to deep into shutdown and came upon the end of the track going faster then he wanted to.  He had it under control, but unfortunately, he did pick up a cone along the way.  Billy and the bike went down around 25-30 mph.  Billy is doing fine and went home on Monday from the 3 day stay in the hospital.  He broke 4 ribs, 3 of them have multiple brakes and punctured a lung.  The hole in the lung closed up after the 2nd day and no chest tube was needed.

Thanks you for your continued support. The “StreetBike” and Billy are recovering nicely and will be back racing May/June.

Hot Rodders of Tomorrow

ARP is pleased to be a part of the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow program.  We are proud of Team ARP and their 4th place finish.

Las Vegas NV. – Team MOROSO – Loara High School from Anaheim CA. won the 3rd Annual “Showdown at SEMA” with a record breaking time of 21:08 minutes. As a matter of fact, the top six of the ten teams competing average this year would have beat last year’s winning time of 31 minutes. All ten teams would have beat the 2009 winning time of 44:22!

“Showdown at SEMA” is the title of the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge National Championship held at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas. This year 10 High School Auto Tech teams competed Nov. 1-4, 2011 in the engine teardown and rebuild contest in front of thousands of spectators.During the divisional playoffs all teams compete once. The best time wins the division and the team has the opportunity to compete at SEMA. But during the “Showdown at SEMA” all the teams compete once each day, Tuesday through Thursday, for a total of three times. At the end of the third day the times are averaged. The National Champion for 2011 – Team MOROSO (Loara High School from Anaheim CA.)was determined with the best average time of 21:08.  They were recognized Thursday night during the SEMA Industry Awards Banquet.Trophies and scholarships were given out on Friday morning at the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow award presentation.

SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund Engine

We’re almost “home” with our project to benefit the SEMA
Memorial Scholarship Fund. The engine was on display in
the Grand Lobby of the SEMA Show.

The bidding started the day of the show and will conclude
this coming Friday, November 11.  According to SEMA
Scholarship Committee member Anson Tse, who is an
executive with eBay, the last three days of the auction
are when the bidding really heats up.

We have received quite a bit of support from the media.
I’ve enclosed links to about two dozen stories that have
recently run. There are more. And we anticipate getting
additional coverage in both the digital and print media
upon culmination of the project.

Thanks again to all SEMA member manufacturers for
making this happen.

Beat the Heat World FInals

I just want to take a minute and reflect back on the 2011 Beat the HEAT World Finals that I hosted this year.  This event is hosted by a different agency every year and last year I put our name into the hat as the host agency….On Monday the 5th of September we were hit with 10 inches of rain in a 24 hour period….Yes the water rose….matter of fact on Wednesday afternoon the 330 foot mark on the track had 4 inches of water on it and the shutdown was under a foot of water….The water dropped and everything was perfect by race time.

That was a relief because I had invested over $1500 in trophies and plaques and over $1000 in printed t-shirts to hand out and the food for the reception and the teams on race day and no one has money to throw away nor do you want to waste a sponsor’s money.

We had the opportunity to visit three area high schools and spoke with several hundred young people about the dangers of Illegal Street Racing and the importance of staying in school and continuing their education.

Thursday came and the Beat the HEAT Teams from around the country started to arrive downtown for the car show/display and it was great.  The Students from the East Ridge High School Engine Building Team came down and displayed with us and decimated the national record engine tear down and build for us with a time of 2 minutes less than the record they set at SEMA in Las Vegas last year.  I made a special bond with the East Ridge High School and their world record engine builders.  Stay tuned for a special project that I will be working on them with this year.

Patrons of the downtown establishments poured outside to take pictures and wave as the parade or Beat the HEAT drag cars roared through downtown Chattanooga, led by our 1931 Sheriff’s Car that we seized when I worked Narcotics and turned into a parade car.

We ended up at Coker Tire and Honest Charley with Corky Coker where we had a nice reception for everyone.

Friday night arrived and everyone was off to the drag strip where we were greeted by a huge crowd that came to see the Beat the HEAT Teams in a Good Guys vs. Bad Guys match up….the crowd had a blast pulling for the bad guys…..but at last count….we won more rounds…..Chalk one up for the “GOOD GUYS”.

Saturday came and it was time for our World Finals.  Beat the HEAT’s Chaplain, Roy Sisco, retired Oklahoma State Patrol, opened our event in prayer and also a special thanks to Sgt. Major Bull and the East Ridge Jr. ROTC for presenting the colors as we paused for a minute in remembrance of 9/11 before getting started. Congrats to Mike Carroll of the Colony, Texas PD for winning Mod Cop and Gerald Cooley with the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia as runner up, Jose Ayala with the Medley, Florida PD as the runner up and Rick Wilkens from the Highland County Ohio Sheriff’s Office for winning  Pro Cop and Top Cop for 2011..

Congratulations to HPD!

ARP congratulates HPD and their engineers James Goodloe, Roger
Griffiths, Marcelo Martinelli and Robert Bell on winning the BorgWarner
Schwitzer Award.  The Louis Schwitzer award is presented by engineers to
engineers, and is intended to recognize individuals for innovation and
engineering excellence in the field of race car design, specially
related to the Indianapolis 500. Presented by the Indiana Section of SAE
International, BorgWarner sponsors the prestigious $10,000 awards. The
winners are honored at an awards banquet, and their names are
immortalized on the trophy, which is on permanent display in the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.
The system is designed to prevent a race car from leaving the pits with
the refueling hose still attached. It is intended to help prevent fuel
spills and injuries to drivers and crew members and has been adopted for
use for the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500.
