Jeg Coughlin Jr. drops close race to Elite Motorsports teammate by .004 seconds
BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 20) — Jeg Coughlin Jr. ran his best quarter-mile pass of the weekend in the opening round of the 36th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. He also left the starting line with a stellar .009-second reaction time. Unfortunately, neither feat was enough to give his JEGS.com/Elite Performance Chevrolet Camaro team the victory against stablemate Erica Enders, who also had her best pass of the weekend and recorded an even better .003-second launch.

“We made a lot of changes on both cars overnight and tried very hard to make them as similar as possible today, being team cars and all, “Coughlin said. “I wanted to be somewhere between .004 and .012 on the Tree and had a .009, but I still left second and crossed the finish line second. It just didn’t pan out for us by four-thousandths of a second. Continue reading Jeg Coughlin Jr. drops close race to Elite Motorsports teammate by .004 seconds

for early acceleration continues in Brainerd
BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 19) — A complete going-over of Jeg Coughlin Jr.’s JEGS.com/Elite Performance Chevrolet Camaro by the Elite Motorsports race team has produced some great signs of horsepower. But to advance in the elimination rounds of Sunday’s 36th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, Coughlin says they need to figure out how to get up to speed a little quicker.

“Coming into this race my car had a 100-percent makeover,” Coughlin said. “We’d been struggling at the big end. It would run decent the first three or four gears and then really slow down through fourth and fifth gear. KENT, Wash. (Aug. 6) — Five-time Pro Stock world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. didn’t have the most successful Western Swing of his career, but the 58-time national event winner says the progress made in throughout the Elite Motorsports camp will most certainly bear fruit in the coming weeks.

“If you were to say I want to go Pro Stock racing and run for race wins and championships, this is the team you’d want around you,” Coughlin said. “We have all the parts and pieces in place to win. We’ve just maybe been our own worst enemy to a certain extent. Continue reading Five-time Pro Stock world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. remains bullish on Elite race team

Paige Coughlin stars in her Sportsman debut; Uncle Mike Coughlin bows out early
HEBRON, Ohio (Aug. 6) — Third-generation drag racer Paige Coughlin had a successful Sportsman debut at this weekend’s Buckeye Fuel Wars, a Division 3 race in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. The third daughter of two-time Pro Mod world champion Troy Coughlin, Paige reached the third round of Super Comp action at National Trail Raceway before fouling out with a -.006 red-light start.

“It was a really cool experience, way better than I thought it would be,” Coughlin said. “It was a little nerve-wracking at first knowing I was going to be racing all these great drivers from Division 3, because we have some of the best in the country, but I stayed focused on what I needed to do and ended up having a great time. It was very exciting to be a part of it all.” Continue reading Paige Coughlin stars in her Sportsman debut; Uncle Mike Coughlin bows out early

KENT, Wash. (Aug. 5) — Five-time Pro Stock world champion successfully qualified his JEGS.com/Elite Performance Chevrolet Camaro in the top half of the elimination field of this weekend’s 30th annual NHRA Northwest Nationals, marking the 14th time in 16 races this year he’ll start race day on the good side of the ladder.

As with most things in the Pro Stock class, a return to the form that had him racing to final rounds and qualifying on top of the class multiple times earlier this year must be done in small steps, something a veteran racer like Coughlin knows very well. Pomona winner Mike Coughlin of Team JEGS eyeing hometown trophy In Columbus
HEBRON, Ohio (Aug. 1) — Two-time Division 3 champion Mike Coughlin hopes to fill his competitive hunger with some genuine home cooking at this weekend’s Buckeye Fuel Wars at his hometown track, National Trail Raceway in nearby Hebron. The race is the fourth North Central Division event in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.

Mike Coughlin
“We can’t wait to race this weekend at our favorite track of all-time,” said Coughlin, who hails from the Columbus suburb of Delaware, Ohio. “My brothers and I literally grew up at National Trail and now all of our kids have fallen in love with the place, and many of them race here also. There’s no place like home, and this is home for us.

“The coolest thing racing here is all our friends and family can come out and join the fun. Plus, we have more than 350 JEGS associates and a lot of them come support us. There are even a few that race themselves so we’ll have some great times, for sure.”

Coughlin will be piloting his proven JEGS.com Top Dragster, which he drove to the winner’s circle at February’s season-opening NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, Calif. He’s since done enough in the yellow and black bullet to remain ranked in the top 10 in Division 3, his home division where he won Top Sportsman titles in 2007 and 2009, and the top 25 nationally.

Mike is ready for his next run in
the JEGS.com Top Dragster.
“We’ve been running so well there just isn’t any reason to change anything,” said Coughlin, who has contested just three national and two divisional events so far. “Minor little things are all we’re having to adjust; we’re super happy with the car. Ryan Micke, Tony Collier, Dave Ruack and Greg Cody, these guys are so good with setting this thing up and making it easy for me to drive and focus on racing.

“I love race weekends at National Trail even though they are quite full of activities. Personally, I stay really busy and it’s much easier to keep your mind in race mode and keep your focus. You’re generally very busy but it’s a fun kind of busy.”

The first race of the weekend opens with Top Dragster qualifying sessions at 3:30 p.m., Friday, followed by two more time trials at 12:30 and 4:30 p.m., Saturday. Eliminations are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., Sunday.

“The JEGS pit will be busy,” Coughlin said. “My son Clay and Dave Ruack’s son Michael will be joining the action in their Junior Dragsters so hopefully we’ll be bringing home a few trophies.

“The new owners of National Trail have made some considerable improvements and it’s exciting to see so much life being breathed back into this track. We’re all ready to race.”

Tickets for the Buckeye Fuel Wars are $20 per day per person. A three-day pass is $50. Children ages 6-12 are $5 per day. Children 5 and under are free.

Even so, Coughlin was pleased that changes made to his JEGS.com/Elite Performance Chevrolet Camaro were beginning to bear fruit.

“We made quite a few changes coming into today on the horsepower side of things and a few more minor changes to the car itself,” Coughlin said. “We had a little luck in Round 1 and got past A.J. (Allen Johnson), changed a few things to make the car better for Round 2, and gave it a shot. We just didn’t quite have enough for Drew.”
