Team JEGS racers Mike Coughlin, Troy Coughlin Jr. looking for wins in Windy City

Team JEGS racers Mike Coughlin, Troy Coughlin Jr. looking for wins in Windy City
JOLIET, Ill. (June 1) — Team JEGS Sportsman stars Mike Coughlin and Troy Coughlin Jr. are headed to Route 66 Raceway for this weekend’s Burndown at Sundown with winning on their minds. Both men are past Division 3 champions and are right at home in Chicago, the site of the third D3 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event of the season.

Troy Coughlin Jr.

“It’s June, so we are getting into the summer months, which only puts a bigger premium on all these races, especially the ones in our division,” Troy Jr. said. “The first two D3 races were big for me, at least in my JEGS.com Super Comp dragster. I went to the final round in one race and the semifinals in the other, so we’ve already put some good points in the bank. But you can give them back in a hurry, too, if you let your guard down, so we need to be prepared for this weekend.”

Troy Jr. will be competing in both Super Comp, where he’s ranked fourth overall with just two races on his ledger, and Super Gas. He won the Division 3 Super Gas championship in 2013.

“Both cars are running great,” Troy Jr. said. “We’ve just had some tough luck in Super Gas so far, but that can change fast. On the other side of the coin, we’ve been very fortunate with the dragster, so things have a way of balancing out.

“Uncle Mike and I have the best guys in the business helping us and we have a lot of fun together, all of us. I know he’s as appreciative as I am with the efforts of Justin Beaver, Tony Collier, Greg Cody, Dave Raurk, and Rick Rossiter. They give us great race cars every weekend without fail.”

Mike Coughlin

Mike, the Division 3 Top Sportsman champion in 2007 and 2009, made the switch to Top Dragster this year and has yet to show the full potential of his extremely quick new rail. He’s hoping the good vibes of Route 66, where he has won three times in the past (in 2005, 2007, and 2011), will be the elixir he needs to get things rolling.

“We’ve changed a few things up for this weekend that we think will help, but for the most part we’re already really happy with this dragster,” Mike said. “It’s so fast. I love driving it. We are very close to making it as consistent as we need it to be to turn on multiple win lights on race day.

“Fuel injection isn’t new to us but the supercharger is, and as much as this thing likes boost, you have to find that perfect spot where everything is happy. When you make your own air you have to keep an eye on things, especially if conditions deteriorate like we get in the hot summer months. We are having a blast, though, for sure.”

Two-time Topeka winner Jeg Coughlin Jr. falls in first round

Jeg Coughlin Jr. falls in first round
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 22) — Two-time Topeka winner Jeg Coughlin Jr. couldn’t find success at Heartland Park Topeka this time around.

Driving the Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart, Coughlin lost in the first round of the NHRA Kansas Nationals on Sunday.

Coughlin, who won in Topeka in 1998 and 2013, made a pass of 6.746 seconds at 205.07 mph, but it wasn’t enough to beat No. 4 qualifier Shane Gray, who made the third-quickest pass of the round, a 6.653 at 207.91 mph.

“Our plague is continuing with our program,” Coughlin said. “But as I’ve said, it’s all right in front of us. We really feel like we’ve got everything in front of us to run in the top five with the rest of these teams out here. Obviously, we’re unable to find it at this point.”

Coughlin and his Elite Motorsports team have struggled since the start of the season, as a new Dodge Dart and new fuel-injected engines have thrown curveballs at the Richard Freeman-owned team.

“We’ve seen some good movement out of some of our competitors,” Coughlin said. “Gray Motorsports has made some progress, A.J. (Allen Johnson) has made some progress, (Chris) McGaha has made some progress — all in the last two or three races. We didn’t get the memo just yet.”

But Coughlin vows to fight on, knowing a change of performance and luck is around the corner.

“We’ve got a lot of on-track testing scheduled for this coming week,” Coughlin said. “Maybe some little morsel will rear its head, and when it does, it’s going to fix four cars real quick.”

Elite Motorsports fields four cars, two Dodges for Coughlin and two-time Pro Stock champ Erica Enders and two Chevrolets for Drew Skillman and Vincent Nobile.

“It’s not for a lack of effort,” Coughlin said. “We’ve got to find the right screws to turn, and when it wakes up, it’s going to wake up four cars real quick. Watch out.”

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 21) — There is plenty of fight left in Jeg Coughlin Jr. and his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart team.

Coughlin, a five-time Pro Stock champion, qualified No. 13 for the NHRA Kansas Nationals on Saturday at Heartland Park Topeka. He’ll square off against No. 4 qualifier Shane Gray in the first round Sunday — and will be a decided underdog — but Coughlin won’t go down without a fight.

Jeg Coughlin Jr. picks up team morale with round-win in Atlanta

Jeg Coughlin Jr. picks up team
morale with round-win in Atlanta
ATLANTA (May 15) — When a team is struggling, a win — any win — is always good for morale.

That’s one of the big benefits that Jeg Coughlin Jr. was able to deliver to his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart team on Sunday when he beat Drew Skillman in the first round of the 36th annual NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

Coughlin snapped a three-race streak in which he had lost in the first round — twice to Skillman — with a pass of 6.648 seconds at 208.17 mph. Coughlin had gone red against Skillman in Houston. Continue reading Jeg Coughlin Jr. picks up team morale with round-win in Atlanta

ATLANTA (May 14) — JEGS.com driver Troy Coughlin Sr. hit a bump in the road — literally — that derailed his shot at winning the NHRA Southern Nationals on Saturday at Atlanta Dragway.

After qualifying No. 2 for the J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series race presented by Pro Line Racing and FuelTech, Coughlin was confident heading into eliminations, but after a fast start in his first-round race with Kevin Fiscus, Coughlin hit a bump on the track that his JEGS.com Corvette didn’t like. Coughlin had to pedal the car, but Fiscus was already past him and heading to the win light. Continue reading Troy Coughlin Sr. hits a bump in the road in first-round loss in Atlanta

Five-time Pro Stock champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. says progress being made in Elite/Mopar camp

Five-time Pro Stock champ
Jeg Coughlin Jr. says progress
being made in Elite/Mopar camp
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ATLANTA (May 14) — Five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. locked up the
No. 8 qualifying position at this weekend’s 36th annual NHRA Southern Nationals
with a solid Friday night pass of 6.686 seconds at 206.86 mph at Atlanta Dragway.
It’s the fourth time in seven races that Coughlin qualified eighth or better in
the eliminations field.
“The team tested again in Oklahoma before heading this way as we continue to try
and clean up some of the things that have been nagging on us, and I think we’ve
seen a little tick of improvement here,” Coughlin said. “We missed a chance in
Q1 when a ground wire shook loose on the burnout and we couldn’t make a pass, but
we came right back in the evening session and posted that 6.686, which ended up
being our best run.
“Looking at the data we felt we could massage at least three- or four-hundreds out
of the tune-up, but we came out here today to just a completely different racetrack
with increased temperatures that just negated any chance of improving on that 6.68.
In hindsight, we’d love to have the Q1 run back because for sure Q2 would’ve been
better but that didn’t happen.”
Despite Saturday’s heat, Coughlin’s Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge
Dart posted runs of 6.723 at 206.39 mph and 6.705 at 205.88 mph, pleasing the 76-time
national event winner.
“Today turned out to be what we expect tomorrow will look like, so you can look
at this as two chances to make race day-type runs,” Coughlin said. “The Mopar felt
pretty good both times with consistent times, and the second run today was even
a bit of a handful that probably could have been even quicker, so we like our chances
at turning on win lights tomorrow.”
Normally, a No. 8 qualifying effort would afford Coughlin the luxury of lane choice
in Round 1, providing NHRA was using the traditional 16-car ladder. This weekend,
however, only 14 Pro Stock cars qualified for the race, so Coughlin is now slated
to run Elite Motorsports teammate Drew Skillman, who qualified seventh with a 6.666
at 207.37 mph.
“I’m not sure lane choice is as big an issue at this track,” Coughlin said. “We
did well in both lanes today, so we’ll just line ’em up and do our best in whatever
lane we end up in tomorrow morning. Skillman is a skillful driver, so we’ll have
a test right from the start.”
FOX Sports 1 will air Saturday qualifying from 10 to 11 p.m. ET and Sunday’s elimination
action from 4:40 to 7:30 p.m. ET.
