YOU SAID YOU LOVE WINNING ON OVALS. WHY ARE THEY MORE SATISFYING FOR YOU? “They just are because it’s something I have worked so hard on for the last few years. I love it man. I really enjoy racing on ovals now. I really do and I just wanted to win a short oval and today was just a perfect day. I led a lot of laps, the car was really good, but I was a bit iffy getting into the (pit) box a couple of times. It was one of those days though and I was really, really happy to be a part of this Verizon team.”

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 AXALTA CHEVROLET SS – RACE WINNER
IT’S BEEN 13 YEARS SINCE YOU’VE BEEN TO VICTORY LANE HERE AT MICHIGAN. YOU HAD TO ASK WHERE IT WAS. ON THE RESTARTS:
“It wasn’t easy. It’s never easy to win at any of these tracks, especially when aerodynamics and track position mean so much. I thought we learned a lot the last time we were here on track position. Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) just called a perfect race. I kept getting on that inside lane and just not getting very good restarts. I knew it was going to get exciting with Kurt (Busch) and Joey (Logano). Those two are very, very aggressive; and of course Kurt got loose. That last restart was it. We had the car to win. Our car was amazing. But whoever got out in front had such a huge advantage. I got a good restart and Kevin (Harvick) for some reason, wasn’t getting good restarts, so Joey was sort of out there by himself and I was able to get to his quarter. When I got to his quarter, I dragged him back and I was able to shoot to the bottom and get by. But he made a heck of an effort. I thought he was going to get back by me; he almost did. And I just needed a couple of laps for my tires to come in and all of a sudden we were out front and setting sail and the checkered flag was waving. This is just unbelievably awesome. I’ve got to say hi to Ingrid and Ella and Leo back home. They couldn’t come today. But we’re celebrating your honor here and this is just amazing. This is fantastic.

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 AXALTA CHEVROLET SS – POLE SITTER
“I don’t know how to make it much better than that. This entire Axalta Chevrolet crew just did a phenomenal job. Our first qualifying effort today, and practice, was not good. I’ve been hearing a lot about tire chatter and we had it big-time. The next run out we made some adjustments and it was better. That whole qualifying session, from the first one, second one, and third session, the car was just near perfect. The first one I just didn’t drive it hard enough. The second time I finally did and we made a little slight adjustment there. Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) and the guys just did perfect. This is exciting. To be running this good and have cars that are this great; back-to-back poles from Watkins Glen to Michigan, we’re having a lot of fun right now.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Michigan–Jeff Gordon

WATKINS GLEN, NY – (August 10, 2014) – AJ Allmendinger powered his No. 47 Scott Products Chevrolet SS to victory at the Cheez-It 355 at the Glen, scoring his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win. The 90-lap race around the 2.45-mile Watkins Glen road course was mired with cautions and even halted three times for red flag periods to clean up accident debris and repair damage to the course. In the end Allmendinger out ran Marcos Ambrose (Ford) in a final two-lap dash to the checkered, and all but locked himself into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 SCOTTS PRODUCTS CHEVROLET SS
HOW IS THE RACE CAR?
“It’s a tricky race track right now. There are moments I think I need one thing and then about 10 laps later I think I need another. Scott Products Chevy is fast we pitted early there and I think that threw me off a little bit because we had to fight through all the slower cars and I used my tires up and then when Marcos (Ambrose) and Jeff (Gordon) and those guys came out they had 10 lap fresher tires. I had already used my stuff up so I think we were pretty late in the run which it’s Watkins Glen so strategy is always going to come into play. More importantly glad everybody is okay in that wreck. That was nasty to see. We will get that fence fixed and go have some fun here for about 30 laps.”
