WATKINS GLEN INTERNATIONAL – SHORT COURSE
TEAM CHEVY POST RACE RECAP
AUGUST 11, 2012

WATKINS GLEN, New York (August 11, 2012) – Boris Said and Eric Curran, No. 31 Marsh Racing Corvette, brought home a solid runner-up finish today in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series GT class of the Continental Tire 200 at Watkins Glen International.

Starting from the pole, Said, who was the GT pole winner, jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag. After the driver exchange and pit stops, Curran made a hard charge to get back to the point, but settled for the solid second place finish when the checkered flag flew.

The No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R driven by John Edwards and Robin Liddell came to The Glen with high hopes to keep their championship effort alive. But contact on the opening lap of the two-hour race sent them behind the wall for repairs that resulted in the pair being scored 14th in-class at the finish.

In the Rolex Daytona Prototype class, it was a difficult day for the five Corvette Daytona Prototype entries. Team Chevy’s top finishing team was the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Corvette DP driven by Ricky Taylor and Max Angelelli in fourth position at the finish.  Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty brought the No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP to the fifth finishing position with the No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP piloted by David Donohue and Jordan Taylor in sixth at the checkered flag.

All three fought back from adversity throughout the race. The No 10 recovered from an extended pit stop for a wicker change.  The No. 99 was assessed a penalty for an on-track incident, and the No. 5 suffered late-race contact while battling for a podium position.

The No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP was also involved in a two-car incident that put them five laps down to the leader, and resulted in an eighth in-class finish. The No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP suffered a mechanical issue that put them on the trailer after lap one of the 91-lap race.

The No. 8 Starworks Motorsports Ford Riley was the DP and overall winner.  The No. 94 Turner Motorsports BMW M3 took the GT victory.

WATKINS GLEN, NY – August 10, 2012 – Behind the wheel of the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Corvette Daytona Prototype, Ricky Taylor will lead the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series field to the green flag Saturday after winning the pole today for the Continental Tire 200 at Watkins Glen International.

The 22-year old driver set a fast lap of 1:06.039 with a speed of 133.56 mph to secure the top-spot in the final qualifying order. It is the 10th career pole for Taylor, the second of the 2012 season and the third straight at The Glen for the team as teammate Max Angelelli qualified on the pole for the June  Sahlen’s Six Hours.
Starting alongside will be Antonio Garcia, No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette Daytona Prototype, to make it an all-Chevrolet front row for the two-hour race.
It is this sixth time this season that the Corvette Daytona Prototype has swept the front row of the starting grid for a Rolex Sports Car Series race this season.

In the Rolex Grand Touring class, Team Chevy also swept the top-two positions in qualifying. Boris Said turned in the quickest time in-class with the No. 31 Marsh Racing Corvette.  Starting second to the veteran Said will be John Edwards, No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R, who, with teammate Robin Liddel, won the class at The Glen in June.

The two-hour race is set for Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 6:00 PM ET. Live coverage will be on SPEED TV from 6:00 PM –8:30 PM ET. Fans can follow live on GRAND-AM.com timing and scoring where the MRN Radio Broadcast can be heard from start to Victory Lane.

CHEVROLET DRIVER POST QUALIFYING QUOTES:

RICKY TAYLOR, NO. 10 SUNTRUST RACING CORVETTE DP – POLE WINNER DP CLASS
WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS TRACK AND HOW WELL YOU DO?
“We have good cars here every time. I think every single year I feel like we have a winning car. At the 6-Hour we had a little bit of misfortune with that incident, but we’ve got such good cars. And the car once again in qualifying was really good. Coming off of a good Continental Tire test a couple of weeks ago kind of set us up well to come here and unload well. This is more important than we’ve ever had seeing is there’s no dry practice. For me, as a driver, it was nice just to have that confidence about brake zones and everything and I just thank the team that gave me such a good car.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 90 SPIRIT OF DAYTONA RACING CORVETTE DP – QUALIFIED 2ND:
ON HIS RUN TODAY AND OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW’S RACE
“It has been difficult. No actual run on the dry settings during practice at all. So, basically it was quite interesting. I just got out and tried to feel as soon as possible what the car was doing. It was more difficult for me because most of the guys and my teammate was here testing the Continental test here on this short track and basically I had to remember from last year where to brake into (Turn) 10 and some other things. But the car felt really good. It’s a shame I’m second. I was second behind Pruett at the 6-hours at The Glen here. So we are consistent. But we really need to be on pole one time (laughs).”

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE GLEN?
“It’s going to be really challenging. Two hours here with these running just a little bit above one minute it going to be really hard for drivers, cars, and especially the tires. I think so far it’s good. We need now to take advantage of the hour we have for testing now just to have to learn as much as we can. But so far, unless everybody is completely off-balance and they can tune it for the race, I think we are in good position anyway.”

BORIS SAID, NO. 31 MARSH RACING CORVETTE – POLE WINNER, GT CLASS
THE MARSH CAR HAS BEEN FAST ALL YEAR, BUT YOU FINALLY GOT IT UP TO THE POLE. WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE TODAY?
“Getting out of the Sprint Cup car and getting into the Corvette seemed easy because those were the first few laps I’d done in the dry. I love this place. It feels good to get the pole. I’d love to do it in the Cup car tomorrow but I don’t think we have a prayer with our team but hopefully I can be in the top 15 in the Cup car.”

THIS IS YOUR FIFTH CAREER GT POLE. TALK ABOUT THE SEASON
“GRAND-AM has done such a great job with the Rolex year. There’s not a lot of cars but in this day and age there’s not a lot of cars anywhere. But the cars we have are really competitive. It’s been exciting racing. It’s a blast to drive. I love racing. This is my 25th year racing and I can’t even believe it’s been that long. But I still feel like a little kid out there. The GT racing is so close and fierce and we’ll be pushing and banging kind of like the Sprint Cup race. I just like competing in any kind of car and the Corvette is a fun car to drive. It handles great. The Sprint Cup car is a lot of horsepower but it handles like a horse, basically. It has a mind of it’s own and you’re kind of riding along with it. The Corvette is like a go-kart. Wherever you put it, it goes. They’re both fun but completely different cars to drive.”

INSIDE THE GRAND-AM GARAGE – JIM LUTZ, CHEVROLET RACING PROGRAM MANAGER –  GRAND-AM ROAD RACING:  “Heading to Watkins Glen International this weekend, the Chevrolet teams are looking forward to continuing the success they enjoyed when GRAND-AM was there for the six-hour endurance race in June.  We enjoyed wins in both Rolex Sports Car Series classes with the No. 9 Action Express Racing Corvette Daytona Prototype and the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R.

“With four races remaining in the season, every finishing position and every point is critical.  Chevrolet currently leads the manufacturers’ standings in Daytona Prototype with six victories so far this season.   There is a tight battle in GT as well. Currently Chevy is second in the standings, but another victory would go a long way to closing the gap to the leader.

“This race is shorter, just two hours, which puts tremendous pressure on the teams to hit the setup as perfectly as possible at the start of the race, and execute perfectly throughout the race to give their drivers the best opportunity for the win.   We are excited about our chances, and are looking forward to the weekend.”

Will Power Claims Second Place Finish at Mid-Ohio and Takes Driver Points Standings Lead

Will Power Claims Second Place Finish at Mid-Ohio and Takes Driver Points Standings Lead
Team Chevy Drivers Score Seven of Top-10 Finishing Positions in Today’s IZOD IndyCar Series Race

LEXINGTON, Ohio – August 5, 2012 – Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, reclaimed the lead in the IZOD IndyCar Series driver point standings with a second place finish in today’s Indy 200 at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course.  Power, who started on the pole, led the first 57 circuits around the 2.25-mile, 13-turn permanent road course on the way to his fifth podium finish of the season.

“It was another caution-free battle today in the IZOD IndyCar Series race at Mid-Ohio,” said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager, IZOD IndyCar Series. “Kudos to the entire field for demonstrating a high level of skill and professionalism throughout a race that started on a drying track surface. Without cautions, our Chevrolet drivers had to adapt to changing track conditions, and maintain a strong pace with focus for 85 laps around the very technical Mid-Ohio circuit.  Congratulations to Will Power and Team Penske on earning the pole position, second place finish and most laps led.  With three races remaining in the season, we are battling hard for the driver’s championship.”

Sebastien Bourdais brought the No. 7 TrueCar/McAfee Dragon Racing Chevrolet to the checkered flag in fourth position, and earned his best finish of the season. He was followed by fellow Team Chevy driver James Hinchcliffe, No. 27 Team GoDaddy.com Andretti Autosport Chevrolet, in fifth place which gave Team Chevy three of the top-finishers in today’s 85-lap race.

In total, seven Chevrolet IndyCar V6 drivers scored top-10 finishes today.  Tony Kanaan. No. 11 GEICO/MOUSER Electronics KV Racing Technology Chevrolet finished sixth.  Ryan Briscoe, No. 2 PPG Automotive Refinishes Team Penske Chevrolet, was seventh at the line. Marco Andretti, No. 26 Team RC Cola Andretti Autosport Chevrolet, crossed the line in eighth place followed by JR Hildebrand, No. 4 National Guard Panther Racing Chevrolet in ninth position.

Two additional Team Chevy drivers in the thick of the driver’s championship battle faced challenges today that resulted in significantly tightening the point standings. Ryan Hunter-Reay, No. 28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda/Pelotonia Andretti Autosport Chevrolet, came to Mid-Ohio as the points leader, but suffered a mechanical issue that relegated him to the 24th finishing position. He is now second in the standings, five points behind Power.

Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves, No. 3 Penske Truck Rental Chevrolet, was assessed a 10 grid position penalty prior to the start of the race for an unapproved engine change that put him in the 23rd starting position.  Castroneves battled to finish 16th on the difficult circuit, and now sits third in points, 21 points behind Hunter-Reay.

Chevrolet continues to lead the Series’ manufacturers’ standings with three races remaining in the season.

Will Power Puts Chevrolet on the Pole at Mid-Ohio with New Track Record

Will Power Puts Chevrolet on the Pole at Mid-Ohio with New Track Record

LEXINGTON, Ohio – August 4, 2012 – Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, set a new track record of 1:05:6474/123.825 mph (time/speed) on the way to his third pole of 2012. Power will lead the 25-car field to the green flag for tomorrow’s Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio for the IZOD IndyCar Series.

It is Power’s second pole at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and the 27th of his career. His other 2012 poles came at St. Petersburg and Sao Paulo, Brazil. The difference in the times from fastest to sixth in the Firestone Fast Six was just over five-tenths of a second.

“Congratulations to Will Power and Team Penske on their pole winning effort today at Mid-Ohio,” said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager, IZOD IndyCar Series. “With the competition in the IZOD IndyCar Series being so close, track position on a technical road course like Mid-Ohio is an advantage. In the end, it is going to take great execution on Sunday to get the win.”

Power’s pole is the seventh time this season that a driver with the Chevrolet 2.2 liter V6 direct injected twin turbo charged engine has held the coveted spot on the starting grid.

Ryan Briscoe qualified sixth behind the wheel of the No. 2 PPG Automotive Refinishes Chevrolet. Sebastien Bourdais, No. 7 TrueCar/McAfee Chevrolet, turned in the seventh fastest time of the day.

Chevrolet IndyCar V6 Teams and Drivers take Lead in Manufacturers’ and Driver’s Point Standings to Mid-Ohio

Chevrolet IndyCar V6 Teams and Drivers take Lead in Manufacturers’ and Driver’s Point Standings to Mid-Ohio

DETROIT – August 1, 2012 – This weekend, the 13 Chevrolet IndyCar V6 drivers will take on the intricacies of the  2.4-mile, 15 turn Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near Lexington, Ohio. The 85-lap Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio will be Round 12 of the 15-race 2012 IZOD IndyCar Season

“This weekend our Chevrolet IndyCar V6 teams and drivers take on the challenge of the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course,” said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager, IZOD IndyCar Series.  “It is a very technical and physically challenging track for the drivers with a combination of fast, medium and low speed corners, one long straightaway and several dramatic elevation changes.  Chevrolet’s technical partners in our IndyCar V6 program are working closely with our team engineers to ensure the Chevy engine delivers the necessary performance and reliability.  They are also employing an array of tools to provide setup insight to the teams for this driver-focused track. The racing is so close every weekend that every detail matters.

“IndyCar is enhancing the push-to-pass parameters this weekend with a 5 second activation delay to reduce the use of the feature in a defensive manner.    This should keep the racing interesting and will require more strategy from the drivers in the cockpit to make the best use of the extra boost.”

With Helio Castroneves and the No. 3 Penske Truck Rental Chevrolet team’s victory in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, his second trip to Victory Lane this season, Team Chevy drivers have notched eight wins in the Bowtie Brand’s return to IndyCar competition.  Chevrolet continues to lead the IndyCar Manufactuers’ Championship standings, a position it has not relinquished since the checkered flag flew at the season’s opening race at St. Petersburg, also won by Castroneves.

“With just four races remaining in the season,” Berube continued.  “And Chevrolet drivers holding down the top-three positions in the driver’s point standings, every position and ever point count in their quest to win the top prize – the IZOD IndyCar Series Driver’s Championship.  The intensity continues to ratchet up.  Everyone involved in the Chevrolet IndyCar program is committed to giving all the teams and drivers the best possible on-track package.”

Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay with three wins to his credit is at the top of the standings heading into the Mid-Ohio event.  He leads Castroneves by 23 points.  Castroneves Team Penske teammate, Will Power, sits in third, just three points behind second position and 26 points out of the lead.

In previous Indy car races at Mid-Ohio two current Team Chevy drivers have visited the Winner’s Circle.  Castroneves has scored two victories – 2000 and 2001.  Ryan Briscoe was the 2008 race winner.

Chevrolet competed previously in Indy-style competition as an engine manufacturer in 1986-93 and 2002-05 with V-8 engines, winning 105 races, that powered Chevrolet to six driver champions, and included seven Indianapolis 500 victories. Five of those wins were at Mid-Ohio as Emerson Fittipaldi took the checkered flag in 1988, 1992 and 1993.  Michael Andretti won twice – 1990 and 1991.

Aschenbach and Curran Take CKS Autosport Camaro GS.R to Victory Lane in GRAND-AM Debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Aschenbach and Curran Take CKS Autosport Camaro GS.R to Victory Lane in GRAND-AM Debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

INDIANAPOLIS – (July 27, 2012) – Lawson Aschenbach and Eric Curran gave Camaro its first victory of the season in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) in the inaugural 2.5-hour Brickyard Sports Car Challenge. Driving the No. 01 CKS Autosport Camaro GS.R, the pair combined to lead a total of 25 laps in the 59-lap race. The win is the first in GRAND-AM Road Racing CTSCC for CKS Autosport team owner Kirk Spencer.

The duo took control of the race after a downpour forced a 25-minute red flag period for standing water on the track. After teams made changes from dry tires to rain tires and back, the No. 01 CKS Camaro emerged in the front of the field and never looked back.

“I don’t think it really sunk in until we crossed that checkered flag and kissed those bricks,” said Aschenbach. “An awful lot of history, all of the races and winners and everything that happens here really does mean something. I just have to say I’m really happy and thankful for everybody at Chevrolet and CKS Autosport.”

“This is excellent,” said Curran.  “This is our first win for this team.  Lawson and I got paired up over the wintertime and this is just great.  Chevrolet is behind us, supporting us, and we have had a bunch of podium finishes. But here at the top step of the podium and to do it here at Indy is very special for us and it’s a big deal.  It’s a big win for us today.”

“Congratulations to Lawson Aschenbach and Eric Curran on capturing the first Continental Tire win for CKS Autosports. It was a difficult race with the changing weather conditions, from dry to torrential rain, back to dry. The CKS team has great strategy, and delivered a convincing win.

“All five of our Camaro GS.R teams has a strong day that found them in the top-10 at the finish.”

Adding to Chevrolet’s success in the inaugural GRAND-AM CTSCC event on the 2.534-mile, 13-turn road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the second place finish by Jeff Bucknum and George Richardson in the No. 62 Mitchum Motorsports Camaro GS.R.

All five Camaro GS.R teams finished in the top-10 in today’s race. Finishing fourth was the No. 6 Mitchum Motorsports Camaro GS.R. The No. 00 CKS Autosport Camaro GS.R finished seventh and the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R took the checkered flag in eighth place.

In the three-hour Brickyard Grand Prix for the Rolex Sports Car Series, Ricky Taylor and Max Angelelli finished third to take the final podium position in the Series debut at the famed Speedway. Starting second, the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Corvette DP duo overcame weather challenges, again taking the track from dry, to wet and back to dry.

“It was very crazy,” said Angelelli. “It was very exciting for me as a driver inside, driving the car; it was beautiful because of so many changes.  I really enjoyed today here in Indy.  The rain, the sun and then back to rain I really enjoyed.  It was a positive race for our Chevy Corvette for our Corvette so I’m happy.”

“It was really good our SunTrust car was really good,” said Taylor. “To be the first Corvette on the debut at Indy is fantastic, but I just wanted a little bit more.  We are not in the championship right now and just in my mind I was thinking this is Indy, in a Corvette, on the 60th anniversary (of the Corvette) I’ve got to do something.  I tried and I just got on the water a little bit and just went off a bit.  We were going for it and I’m really happy to be on the podium at Indy.”

The No. 9 Action Express Racing Corvette DP with Darren Law and Joao Barbosa handling the driving duties were in contention to with the North American Endurance Championship (NAEC) DP crown, but late race on-track contact relegated the team to a fifth-in-class finish.

“Our Corvette Daytona Prototype and Camaro GT.R teams in the Rolex Series also endured the ups and downs of weather,” Lutz concluded. “The race saw a lot of action on track.  Congratulations to the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Corvette team and drivers Ricky Taylor and Max Angelelli on a podium finish.

“The first time at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for GRAND-AM gave fans some great racing.  Now the Chevrolet teams in Rolex will re-group and head back to Watkins Glen.”

In the GT class, the No. 31 Marsh Racing Corvette posted a seventh in-class finish. The No. 57 Stevenson Camaro GT.R was also in contention for the NAEC GT title, but contact with the wall during the heavy rainfall ended the team’s day early.

Team Chevy returns to action in the Rolex Sports Car Series on August 10-11 in the Watkins Glen International at Watkins Glen International Short Course, Watkins Glen, New York.  The next CTSCC event will be September 7-8 at Laguna Seca Raceway, Monterey, California.

Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 Teams Head to Edmonton

Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 Teams Head to Edmonton

DETROIT – July 17, 2012 –With two-thirds of the IZOD IndyCar Series season in the books, the Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 teams return to Canada for the second consecutive event to compete in the Edmonton Indy.

The Edmonton City Centre Airport 13-turn, 2.224-mile temporary street circuit is the site of the 11th race on the 15-race 2012 schedule. The flat course has long straightaways with tight corners, and sits at an altitude of almost 2,200 feet above sea level.  The 2012 Edmonton Indy will be the eighth IndyCar race at Edmonton City Centre Airport. The race was held on a 1.973-mile temporary circuit from 2005-2010 and moved to a new 2.224-mile temporary circuit in 2011.

“Congratulations to Ryan Hunter-Reay and his Andretti Autosport team on winning their third consecutive race in Toronto,” said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager for the IZOD IndyCar Series. “This weekend, Chevy returns to Canada to race on the Edmonton City Centre Airport temporary course.  Like all temporary courses, Edmonton will present a unique set of challenges. The Chevrolet team engineers, working in conjunction with our technical partners, have been working on adapting to the altitude the cars will be operating in, which is nearly as high as Sao Paulo, Brazil.  The altitude, coupled with the recently added push-to-pass feature, will increase the workload on the Chevrolet twin turbo V6 engine.

“With five races remaining on the schedule, we are approaching them one-race-at-a-time. But, at the same time, we remain focused on the ultimate goals: Chevrolet winning the IZOD IndyCar Series Manufacturers’ Championship, and a Team Chevy driver hoisting the Driver’s Championship trophy at the last race.”

Currently four Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 drivers occupy spots in the top-five in the driver standings.  With his Toronto victory, Ryan Hunter-Reay moved to the points lead followed by Will Power and Helio Castroneves.  James Hinchcliffe holds down fifth place in the points. Chevrolet holds the lead in the Manufacturers’ Championship standings by 13 points over second place.

Team Chevy driver Will Power is the defending champion of the Edmonton Indy.  Last year’s victory was his second win at Edmonton; his first coming in 2009. Sebastien Bourdais also has two wins at Edmonton, 2005 and 2007.  JR Hildebrand and James Hinchcliffe have both notched Edmonton wins in the Firestone Indy Lights Series.

Chevrolet competed previously in Indy-style competition as an engine manufacturer in 1986-93 and 2002-05 with V-8 engines, winning 105 races, that powered Chevrolet to six driver champions, and included seven Indianapolis 500 victories.
