Chevrolet Clinches Bill France Performance Cup for the 16th Time; Award Recognizes Manufacturers’ Championship in the NASCAR Nationwide Series

DETROIT (November 15, 2014) – With Kyle Larson’s third-place finish in the Ford EcoBoost 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Chevrolet clinched the Manufacturers’ Championship in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. The 2014 achievement marks the 16th time the Bowtie Brand has captured the prestigious Bill France Performance Cup.

It is also the first time Camaro has earned a Manufacturers’ award in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. The Chevy Camaro made its series debut at Daytona International Speedway in February of 2013 and has since made 19 trips to Victory Lane.

“Chevrolet is honored to win the 2014 Bill France Performance Cup in the NASCAR Nationwide Series for the 16th time,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “This is the first-ever Manufacturers’ title for Chevrolet with Camaro in the Nationwide Series, which makes it even more special.”

En route to securing the Bill France Performance Cup, Chevrolet drivers have won 15 races this season in the Nationwide Series. The quest for the coveted 2014 Manufacturers’ title began at the first race of the season when Regan Smith piloted his No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro to the victory at Daytona International Speedway.

In addition to Smith, the following Team Chevy drivers contributed to this special award with manufacturers’ points-paying finishes: Kevin Harvick (four wins); Chase Elliott (three wins); Brendan Gaughan (two wins); Kasey Kahne (two wins); Kyle Larson (two wins); Ty Dillon (one win); Paul Menard (one win) and Regan Smith (one win).

“This award is the result of dedication and determination by our Nationwide Series team owners, drivers, and crew chiefs,” added Campbell. “We salute everyone for their tireless work in earning this honor for Chevrolet.”

“We had a great Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet but the bottom just wasn’t the perfect place for us to run. I could feel the tires going away and then we needed to move up. So when we saw some of those guys running fast laps a little bit higher up, I was looking forward to making that last lap. The guys made some great adjustments. We unfortunately had a tire going down on the left front, so I don’t know if that helped us or hurt us, but it was pretty nice to get that pole. JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 AXALTA CHEVROLET SS – Finished 2nd:
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON NOT MOVING ON TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND IN HOMESTEAD, YOU ONLY MISSED IT BY ONE POINT:
“Yeah, it’s disappointing. We have a lot to hold our heads up high about; the way that we raced this race and this whole Chase and the whole season. We raced hard. We raced together as a team. But I hope we taught somebody that you can race clean and still go out there and give it your best. You don’t have to wreck people to make it in the Chase or win the championship. I’m afraid if it was that ugly these last couple of weeks it’s going to get really ugly next week. I couldn’t be more proud of this Axalta Chevrolet team and Alan Gustafson (crew chief) and everybody. This makes last week hurt that much more. But we did everything we could at Martinsville. We did everything we could here, second just wasn’t good enough. (Kevin) Harvick was in another zip code. There was nobody that was going to get him today. We did a great job finishing second. You know what I’m not happy about it, but at the same time I’m really proud of what we have done this year and we will go try to win Homestead and end this season on a positive note.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Phoenix–Post Race

Chase Elliott Crowned 2014 NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion

AVONDALE, Ariz. (Nov. 8, 2014) – Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 NAPA Chevrolet Camaro, claimed the 2014 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) championship with a fifth-place finish in the DAV 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. His title, the first for Elliott and first for team owner Dale Earnhardt, Jr., marks Chevrolet’s 18th Driver’s Championship since the inception of the series in 1982.

“On behalf of Chevrolet, congratulations to Chase Elliott and the No. 9 Camaro team on winning the NASCAR Nationwide Series Driver’s Championship,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. Vice President Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “Chase and the crew demonstrated great teamwork and that never-give-up attitude. Congratulations to Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Kelly Earnhardt-Miller and the entire JR Motorsports organization on this accomplishment.”

In his first year of NNS competition, Elliott has piloted the Chevy Camaro to three wins, 16 top-five and 26 top-10 finishes to date. At 18 years of age he is the youngest title winner in any of NASCAR’s three national series.

Elliott joins 14 other Team Chevy drivers to record this achievement. Others include: Austin Dillon (2013), Clint Bowyer (2008), Martin Truex, Jr. (2004-05), Brian Vickers (2003), Kevin Harvick (2001 & ‘06), Jeff Green (2000), Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (1998-99), Randy LaJoie (1996-97), Johnny Benson (1995), David Green (1994), Steve Grissom (1993), Joe Nemechek (1992) and Larry Pearson (1987).

“We are proud to have Chase on Team Chevy,” added Campbell.

For qualifying, we didn’t have any expectations there. We definitely expected the car to be a little better in practice today. It had such good grip in the middle when we were testing, and that’s where we were lacking today. The balance is off but the team made some good adjustments and especially there for qualifying. That was a good improvement. We just needed another chunk there and we’d be right there. TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR THOUGHTS ON COMING INTO THIS WEEKEND’S RACE:
“Excited to be here, especially after our performance at Texas and then even back a few days our test session that we had in Miami. We did test here. It didn’t go exactly how we wanted, but the last 10 days we have learned a lot about our race cars. I’m feeling very optimistic about how our Lowe’s Chevy is going to run here this weekend. The No. 24 had an incredible test and I really expect him to be fast and clearly something that he and that team need to have for this weekend. I had a great week. Spent some time out here in this direction I should say. I was on the West Coast. I went to the SEMA show for Chevrolet and unveiled a really cool Stingray Corvette, ’71 Corvette and then had a photo shoot for a sponsor and stuff. It’s been nice to be out west and I’m ready to go racing.”

TALK A LITTLE ABOUT COMING INTO PHOENIX THIS WEEKEND.
“Yeah, I’m excited to be here at Phoenix. I enjoy this track. I haven’t ran all that great here but I do enjoy it. Hopefully we can have a good weekend. I walked by the car; we have some camo on it so that’s pretty cool. I’d like to keep the top-10s going. We’ve been running really strong in the Chase. Had we been in the Chase, we’d be in this round right now and right in the thick of things to make it to Homestead. Even though we’re not in the chase, we’re still trying to treat it like we are and trying to do the best job to make it to the next round, even though we won’t. The last two races will be fun. Phoenix I enjoy and Homestead is my favorite. Hopefully we can finish off the year strong.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Phoenix–Kyle Larson

CONGRATS ON THE WIN. NOT SURE IF YOU SAW WHAT HAPPENED ON PIT ROAD AFTER THE RACE:
“I saw a little bit on the big screen going down the back straightaway. I would definitely have to go to the tape and watch and see what happened there. I know that second to last restart I got hit from behind and I know Brad (Keselowski) got to my outside and I guess in the process of running into me and getting to the outside lane he ruffled some feathers in the process. Just and exciting night for us, we had a very fast race car, led a lot of laps. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE LOWE’S RED VEST PROGRAM AND WHAT YOU HAVE GOING ON TODAY:
“On a funny note (Chad) Knaus (crew chief) is even in one of these (red vests). So everybody should leave here immediately and go see it firsthand themselves. Then on a serious note the red race car and wearing the vest and all the red this weekend in general is really to honor the 260,000 plus employees at Lowe’s, that put on the vest every day and go to work and make all the magic happen in the stores. It’s a cool program. I’m of course having a little fun with it and going to wear the vest and so are the crew guys, but in all seriousness they are what make it all happen and it’s neat to see Lowe’s utilize the relationship from a marketing stand point, but also internally amongst all their employees really kind of worldwide now.”
