Q. Of 43 people, how many of those actually have a chance to win the race?
KURT BUSCH: The Daytona 500? 43. It’s a roulette wheel, it really is. Daytona, Talladega, it’s unique teaching people that don’t know a lot about NASCAR and how different Daytona and Talladega really are, and yet so much preparation goes into these cars. I mean, they’re beautiful cars with the most man-hours put into them, and some teams are electing not even to run the Unlimited because they know they’re going to destroy a car. Wow, what do we do with restrictor plate racing? It’s just that different, the way the racing is. There’s strategy, there’s drafting. A lot of it is luck, being in the right place at the right time. JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DRIVE TO END HUNGER CHEVROLET SS, met with members of the media at Media Day at Daytona International Speedway.
Q. How many people out of the 43 that are going to be in the 500 can actually win the race?
JEFF GORDON: I would say 43. You look at in the past people who have won on restrictor plate races, it’s just right time, right place, survival, and getting that push, it can happen. Continue reading Chevy Racing–Daytona Media Day–Jeff Gordon

WHEN YOU ARE IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT AS AN ATHLETE (IN REFERENCE TO THE LAST CALL IN THE SUPERBOWL) BECAUSE THAT TYPE OF THING HAPPENS IN RACES SOMETIMES TOO. IS THAT PART OF THE PRO ATHLETE MENTALITY THAT YOU HAVE TO PUT THAT KIND OF STUFF BEHIND YOU?
“I think some people do a better job than others at that. I think it actually happens pretty often in racing. Things happen and you either get over it or you don’t. The good guys definitely find a way to get over it and they are fine the next day.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–Daytona Media Day–Kasey Kahne

Q. How many legitimate shots do you think you have to win the Daytona 500?
TONY STEWART: I think two of them for sure, the year that Newman won and the year that I crashed and took Kurt out with me in that deal. Kurt and I were the two best cars in that race all day, and that’s definitely one where I got a speeding penalty and had to go to the back and then had to free the car up to get through traffic, and then when I got to the front I was too loose. That was probably our best shot. And then there was one when ‑‑ I think it was the first one that Dale Jr. won, and there were three of us ‑‑ there were two of us that had broken away from everybody at the end because of a pit stop, and Kurt was the lap car, and I just didn’t have any way to get momentum to go by. DALE EARNHARDT JR., NO. 88 NATIONWIDE CHEVROLET SS met with media on Media Day at DIS. Transcript:

Q. What’s your favorite Jeff Gordon memory?
DALE EARNHARDT JR.: What’s my favorite one? There’s a lot. You know, we’ve raced each other a lot, and I remember how great it felt to ‑‑ me and him had a race, I think it was ’99 at Michigan in the Nationwide Series when we used to run the Pepsi car a couple races that year. I was so excited that he was going to run some Nationwide races in now the XFINITY series. I was so excited that he ran that year and was really pumped up when he would come to the racetrack because we ran against Mark Martin all the time, and Mark was very, very hard to beat, but he showed up every week, so you kind of got used to Mark being around and learning from Mark, so I was excited to get out on the track with Jeff.
We ended up racing together for the win at Michigan, and he led some of the race, I led some of the race, we ended up winning the race, and then we went to Phoenix and raced each other for that win and he ended up winning the race and I was crowned the champion of that particular event. I AM SURE A LOT OF FANS WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOUR JOB IN DRIVING A RACE CAR, TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT:
“Yeah, ever since I was a little kid I enjoyed driving a race car and still do to this day. I wouldn’t say the easiest part is, but the part you enjoy the most is right before the race and getting strapped in the car, firing the engine, doing your pace laps and start to get ready to go racing. That’s fun and that is what we wake up for every day. There is a lot of stress involved in how you prepare and do all these other things but ultimately the end is a lot of fun. It’s very rewarding when you have a good day and very humbling when you have a bad day.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–Daytona Media Day–Paul Menard

WHAT ARE SOME KEY TRAITS THAT MAKE A GOOD RACE CAR DRIVER? “You can boil it down to attitude, patience and feel. I would say patience is probably my weakest point. I struggle just because we go to the limit of what the car gives us. I would say a lot of us would say we can drive a lot harder than what the car can hold. My patience issue is that when I don’t feel where I want to be, I tend to over-drive the car which ultimately slows me down.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–Daytona Media Day–Justin Allgaier

You want to be the last car in a big group, so whenever that group rolls, you want to be towards the end, and everybody knows that, so it’s going to be very interesting, and I think we saw that at Talladega, where people were playing the waiting game and left pit road without enough time to even come back and take the green. HOW DO YOU CONSERVE FUEL?
“I think everyone kind of has their own way of going about it. Since fuel injection has come along and you have some data you can try to do a better job at that and actually see how you are doing. When we go to a test they typically will put the miles per gallon or the laps per gallon on the dash. If you are making a 50 lap run you can try different techniques. I think each track it’s maybe a little bit different at. For me normally what I do is try it three or four different ways, take notes and then when you go back for the race and you need to try to save gas then you kind of have a plan.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–Daytona Media Day–Jamie McMurray

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GOOD PEOPLE?
“I think that really people are everything in our sport. I mean obviously budge and having a strong organization that puts a good group of people together is very important, but at the same time as a small group we have kind of had the same group of guys for quite a while. I think we have a good group of people and it’s important to have people that work well together. In the past I have been with some teams where they kind of put an all-star line-up in for a team and it’s a lot of really good individual people that area really good at their job, but if they don’t work well together it’s not a good team. I think that over the course of time we have put together a good team, a good program, guys that know their place and enjoy what they do and aren’t trying to do the other guys job. Having a good team and a good moral and good people that work well together is important.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–Daytona Media Day–Casey Mears

CAN TESTING TURN A TEAM’S PERFORMANCE AROUND, OR IS IT OVERRATED?

Q. Talk about your full‑time chief for this year, and what are your thoughts about it?
DANICA PATRICK: Not necessarily, but, you know, I trust the team that they’ll make good decisions for me and do the best thing for me and for the team overall. They know that I worked with Daniel back in 2012 when I did 10 races with Zipadelli. He was the engineer, and they knew that I got along with him and liked him. WHEN THAT YELLOW FLAG CAME OUT, YOU KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO HAVE TO FIGHT. WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND?
“I knew that yellow was coming. I don’t know how many races we actually won last year. There was that one at Watkins Glen and a few more. I just can’t thank the whole team and Corvette fans enough and Corvette Racing and all the guys and these two drivers (teammates). We all did amazing. We stayed out of trouble. The car is in perfect shape. Not a single touch. I think that’s what it takes just to keep it alive and bring it home in one piece, that’s the thing. HAS IT BEEN MORE HECTIC THAN YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?
“Honestly, I’ve been out there trying to keep it on the tarmac and make sure I can give a clean car to Jan and Antonio. There’s a lot of action, and I think everyone can feel the competition in GTLM. You can see it when you’re out there racing. The BMWs, the Porsches… they’re all pushing so hard and it’s hard not to get caught up in it. So far it’s gone well. The car feels fast and I’m looking forward to the finish.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–Rolex 24 At Daytona
