KURT BUSCH, NO. 41 HAAS AUTOMATION CHEVROLET SS – POLE WINNER
WAS THIS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF HOW YOU, TONY GIBSON AND YOUR GUYS KEPT UP WITH THE TRACK? “Everything is so tight in qualifying. I wanted to run the same time each time out. With the track continuing to change, with the sun and the shade, then the track rubber built up, air pressures are changing and tires are dropping off… everybody chipped in. The guys at the track, the guys at the shop, the tire guy, the engine guy, everyone chipped in. That’s what this is all about – getting that little extra. We did that with our Haas Automation Chevrolet today. Thanks to Gene (Haas). The second pole of the year feels good. Now we need to dial it in and get that long-run speed out of the car.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Pole Report

TEAM PENSKE DRIVERS JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, WILL POWER, HELIO CASTRONEVES AND SIMON PAGENAUD met with member of the media and discussed a variety of topics. Selected quotes:

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, NO. 2 VERIZON TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET: IS THE TRACK HOTTER OR COOLER THAN IT WAS WHEN YOU TESTED HERE? “Hotter, a lot hotter. We are sliding around a lot more. I am surprised…it felt like the track was really green. That really surprised me to be honest. If you think about it, we came here once with aero kit. Our first day ever with the aero kit was here. We had no real idea of what we needed to do or anything. Right now it is hard because the track is really slow as well. Every time we come here, it seems to be that way. I thought it would be a little better even being a green race track, and even the heat on it because people ran yesterday, we thought the track would be a little better. We were miles off. We are getting there, but it is a couple of seconds off, but it is going to keep getting quicker.”

Full Transcript:

HAVE YOU DONE ANYTHING TO PREP FOR YOUR DEBUT IN THE BOOTH FOR TONIGHT’S XFINITY SERIES RACE?
“They had a production meeting this morning. I got a chance to sit in on that, but other than that just being around the sport as many years as I have. I guess being a couch commentator that is about the only preparation that I have done. It’s going to be a unique experience. I look forward to it. This is an exciting race to watch in general, so I’m sure there will be plenty of action and things to talk about from up there.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Texas–Jeff Gordon

KEVIN KALKHOVEN, TEAM CO-OWNER, KV RACING TECHNOLOGY AND STEFANO COLETTI, NO. 4 KVRT CHEVROLET, met with members of the media at NOLA Motorsports Park to announce Variable Bore Rams signing as primary sponsor for the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana.

STEFANO COLETTI, NO. 4 VARIABLE BORE RAMS – KVRT CHEVROLET
YOU’RE NEW TO THE VERIZON INDYCAR SERIES BUT YOU’RE ALREADY LANDING NEW SPONSORS. HOW EXCITING IS THIS?
“I’m very excited to have Variable Bore Rams on the car. They are from Louisana, and the team is helping me a lot this year with sponsors. I met Chip (Marshall Jr.) a few months ago when he came here to drive IndyCars. We got along pretty well and I’m happy that he’s on board for this race.”

YOU HAVEN’T BEEN OUT ON THE TRACK YET THIS WEEK BUT YOU HAVE TESTED. WHAT ARE YOU IMPRESSIONS?
“All the changes they made to the track are great. They put a lot of gravel beds around and moved some tire barriers around to make it a lot safer. I like the track. The first time I came here, I thought the track was a lot of fun to drive. It’s going to be better this way. There are still some improvements to do, but they’ve come a long way. We have to thank the people from the track for making all these efforts.”

HOW MANY PLACES ARE THERE TO PASS?
“To be honest, Turn 1 will be one of the biggest ones because you’re coming down the straight pretty fast and you have a pretty big braking point. Plus with the timing line they put on the outside of Turn 1 and avoiding us going wide, that will make the corner even slower so that’s where we’ll be able to pass a lot. I think the braking after the backstraight as well will be another one, and maybe between Turn 3 and Turn 4.”

KEVIN KALKHOVEN, TEAM CO-OWNER, KV RACING TECHNOLOGY
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE STRONG START TO THE SEASON AND HOW STRONG BOTH CARS RAN AT ST. PETERSBURG?
“Obviously there is still a development base of knowledge we need to get with the new aero kits. We’re not there yet. However, I will say that Sebastien (Bourdais) has really come to grips with it. Stefano’s attitude is that ‘I have a right foot and that’s all I’m going to use!’ So we need to change that a little bit, particularly when he comes into the pits! No, we’re excited about Stefano. He has a great personality and fits in well with the team and leads his team extremely well. He’ll show a progressive development in driving an IndyCar over the course of the next few races, starting here I hope.”

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM YOU ARE PARTICIPATING IN AS PART OF THE AXE WHITE LABEL COLLECTIVE?
“I got to have some fun yesterday with Coby (Henslee) a part of the Axe White Label Collective it is a mentorship program. I got to go over there and drive a legends car for the first time. I think I was supposed to give tips, but that was my first time in the car so he was giving me all the tips. I had a lot of fun and it is cool to get to hang out with him this week. And get to try and give any advice I can. I hope he has had fun so far and looking forward to see how he does the rest of the week over there on the little Texas track.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR– Texas–Kyle Larson

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS, WAS THE GUEST ON THIS WEEK’S NASCAR TELECONFERENCE.

TRANSCRIPT BELOW:

LAURA FINLEY: Good afternoon, everyone. Welcome to today’s NASCAR teleconference. We are joined by Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 42 Target Chevrolet for Chip Ganassi Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Kyle, to start off, how are you feeling, and can you talk a little bit about what’s going on the past few days?

KYLE LARSON: Yeah, I feel great right now, and I felt perfectly fine shortly after I fainted the other day. But yeah, I just had to get a lot of tests run on me to make sure nothing serious was wrong with me, and all the tests came back negative. Yeah, the whole time I felt fine, and hated it that I couldn’t race this weekend in the Target Chevy, but Regan did a really good job, and just got to thank all the doctors and nurses for how thorough they were with me. JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, NO. 2 VERIZON TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, RACE WINNER: YOU SAID ONE YEAR AGO YOU HAD TO BE SO PATIENT, BUT NOT TODAY. TAKE US THROUGH YOUR RUN: “Today was a good day to be honest with you. The car was really good on black tires and that was the key. The tires were not falling off and right there at the end I was just running slow to look after them. When I needed to push I could push. Everybody with Verizon and Team Penske did an amazing job – Chevy as well. This aero kit is amazing to drive.”

DID YOU SEE WILL POWER TRYING TO MAKE THE MOVE UNDER YOU IN THE MIRRORS? “I saw him make the move but he was way too far and I wasn’t going to give him the position. If he was beside me I would have said, ‘okay, go ahead’. When I got to the turning point he wasn’t even close. It is a shame we touched, but it’s all good, it’s racing.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR–St. Petersburg–Post Race

WHAT PUT YOU IN THE GARAGE?
“Yeah, it is a motor issue. I think the same thing as the No. 47 (AJ Allmendinger). We just have to do a better job of going through our procedures at ECR (Earnhardt Childress Racing) right now. We have some power, but we are not finishing races.”

DID YOU HAVE ANY INDICATION SOMETHING WAS GOING BAD?
“I just started getting wicked loose and that was from the oil dropping on the right rear tire, and just had no grip because the oil was everywhere. I hate it because we were going to have a good day. We were up to 13th. We battled back; we had one bad set of tires. Got our lap back and battled back up through there and then there she went.”

WHAT PUT YOU GUYS IN THE GARAGE?
“Motor issues of some sort, I’m not sure what the exact problem is with the motor. We had a fast Bush’s Beans Chevy just trying to be patient. There were a lot of guys already starting to wreck out there, so I was just trying to keep the car clean for the first 400 laps. We needed to work on it a little bit to be up there with the top three or four guys, but I felt like the car was pretty strong. I noticed some smoke start rolling in the car and I could see it start out of the back of the car. I think when that was happening there had to be stuff starting to get on the tires and stuff. I just started losing speed and then by that point it was smoking so bad they black flagged me, which they probably should have. Nobody could see behind me. We are here (in the garage) now.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Martinsville–AJ Allmendinger
