Giovanni Scelzi Sweeps King of the Wings Race; Two Marquee Events on Tap This Week

Inside Line Promotions – ATTICA, Ohio (Sept. 4, 2019) – Giovanni Scelzi backed up his King of the Wings victory last year by dominating the event last weekend, scoring his second straight victory in as many career starts at Gas City I-69 Speedway.

Scelzi and car owner Bernie Stuebgen made the most of a last-minute decision to invade the bullring in Gas City, Ind., last Friday. The team set a new track record during qualifying before winning a heat race from fourth and the main event from sixth.

“We were good all night,” Scelzi said. “We got right into third in the feature and then passed Cole Duncan for second and then T.J. Michael for the lead within the first few laps. Lapped traffic was insane. We were going top, bottom and middle. There was a lot of maneuvering.”

Scelzi was methodical as he picked through the field and through traffic en route to his sixth triumph of the season.

The weekend concluded on Saturday at Attica Raceway Park, which hosted the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions during the Brad Doty Classic. Scelzi qualified quickest in his group and seventh overall before a sixth-place result in a heat race relegated him to the B Main. He won that race to transfer into the back of the main event before capping the night with a rally from 21st to 16th.

Scelzi shifts gears this week with a busy four-day stretch. He will compete in a midget on Wednesday and Thursday at The Dirt Track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Ind., with the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series during the famed BC 39 before venturing to Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., for the Tuscarora 50 on Friday and Saturday.

“I want to thank Toyota Racing Development and Jack Irving as well as Chad and Billy Boat for the opportunity,” he said. “It’s exciting to get more laps in a midget and it will be a great challenge this week during one of USAC’s biggest events.

“I’m also looking forward to getting to Port Royal. It’s one of my favorite places. The track has been on point every time I’ve been there and with the videos I’ve watched. Last year we were running fourth during the Tuscarora 50 and we broke a rear end. Hopefully we’ll have similar speed without the misfortune this weekend.”
