Drift Masters and IDC Final
Ireland – Mondello
This past weekend was a busy one for Baggsy and the SB Motorsport team. Mondello Park in Ireland played host to the double header event of the season. Not one, but two finals in the form of the Irish Drift Championship and the Drift Masters GP. This promised to be an action packed weekend.
The weekend kicked off with a whole day of practice Friday. First up for the main events was the Irish Drift Championship final on Saturday. After a morning practice session, it was straight in to qualifying. The first run saw a full wet track, whilst the second run was full dry. Not the ideal conditions for any driver, but Baggsy would find himself taking the 9th position, and Acorn Insurance teammate Nigel Colfer sat in 15th.
Next up was the Top 32 battles. Baggsy would find himself on the start line facing Irish driver, Denis Murphy. After contact from Murphy on the first run, with Baggsy in the lead position. The pair entered the second run of the battle with Murphy on a 10-0. Baggsy would push as hard as possible in the chase position, but the judges awarded the win to Murphy ending the battles there for Baggsy.
Nigel Colfer would take on Kevin Quinn for his Top 32 battle. A close fought battle from both drivers would see Colfer come out on top, and proceed to the Top 16. His next component was Duane McKeever, a man unbeaten in 2018. Another epic battle would see the judges put the win in McKeevers hands, ending Colfers IDC fight there.
Sunday soon rolled around, and with it came the much anticipated Drift Masters GP final round. One more practice session took place, before the drivers headed into another qualifying session. A new field of drivers took to the track ready to bring the show to Mondello Park. Baggsy would score a zero on his first run, but a 77 on his second run would put him in 24th position. Unfortunately a score of zero on both qualifying runs after dropping wheels, would see Nigel Colfers weekend finish early.
Baggsy took to the start line for his Top 32 battle against Formula Drift driver Forrest Wang. From start to finish, the battle was pure action. Speed, proximity and plenty of smoke left the crowds cheering for more. The judges called for mistakes from both drivers, but the advantage went to Wang ending the DMGP season there for Baggsy.
A truly spectacular finisher to what has been an amazing European drift season with DMGP. In front of 15,000 fans and watched online by more than 1 million people, the final round of Drift Masters GP did not disappoint. If 2018 was anything to go by, then the 2019 championship is going to be something very special!
Baggsy: The double header IDC and DMGP Finals weekend was insane. It was great to be back at Mondello Park, and to have so many new drivers join both championships for the last round. The level of driving was crazy, and the atmosphere from the crowds was just as crazy. It was a lot of fun driving with Forrest Wang, and we pushed as hard as we could. Unfortunately for us he just tipped the scales for the judges. The whole DMGP season has been a step up for drifting, and it’s been amazing to be apart of it this year. We have not had the easiest season this year, but there have been many highlights. We have started preparations for the 2019 season already, and I can’t wait to get back out there to put on the fight.
