Giovanni Scelzi Ties Career-Best World of Outlaws Result

Inside Line Promotions – CALISTOGA, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2018) – Giovanni Scelzi enjoyed another successful outing during a rare doubleheader in his family owned sprint car last weekend.

Scelzi piloted the No. 41s on Friday and Saturday at Calistoga Speedway, which welcomed the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series for the Wine Country Outlaw Showdown.

“It was a pretty eventful weekend,” he said. “We ran one car Friday night. I wasn’t comfortable all night. I qualified okay, but had a mediocre heat race and main event. We struggled with the nose being light. We changed race cars for Saturday and went to a different wheel base. We were 100 times better.”

Scelzi qualified seventh quickest and placed fourth in a heat race on Friday before he capped the night by advancing a position to finish ninth in the A Main. It marked his third career top 10 with the series. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/Qeo248SwHno.

The team hustled to swap cars for Saturday and the effort paid off as Scelzi timed in fifth quickest in qualifying despite being the last car out. He then won a heat race before finishing second in the dash to line up on the outside of the front row for the main event.

“We qualified well and had a good heat and dash,” he said. “The game plan was if I got the lead, great and try to control the race. If not run second and try to pounce when the car changes or in traffic. I didn’t catch traffic at a good time. That let Donny (Schatz) and later (Logan) Schuchart get by me. On the last restart I slid Schuchart and didn’t clear him, which allowed Brad Sweet to get by so I lost fourth at the end. I felt like the car was good enough to win. It was a learning night.”
