F4 DRIVER CALLED UP TO CHALLENGE GLOBAL RACING GROUP IN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
Global Racing Group leads F3 Americas team championship; Abel Motorsports adds Jacob Abel to roster
INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 12, 2018)- After a set of back-to-back triple header weekends last month, the F3 Americas Championship Powered by Honda teams return to action at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey, Sept. 14-16.
With the most podium visits of any F3 team so far at nine, Global Racing Group leads the season-long team championship heading into the mid-season event. However, earlier this week Abel Motorsports announced it expanded its F3 lineup, calling up F4 U.S. Championship sophomore Jacob Abel of Louisville, Kentucky, to vie for the team championship. Abel will fill a second seat for Abel Motorsports team, running alongside his undefeated teammate and reigning F4 U.S. champion Kyle Kirkwood of Jupiter, Florida.
“We are expanding to a two-car team in F3 and we’re looking to continue our success,” said Abel Motorsports team principal Bill Abel. “Jacob Abel will drive our second F3 car at New Jersey alongside Kyle Kirkwood, and we feel our driver lineup gives us a great chance to add to our winning streak.”
Spearheading GRG’s success, Baltazar Leguizamon of Buenos Aires, Argentina, entered NJMP under the team’s black and orange colors to defend its lead as a single-car entry. At the inaugural F3 Americas event, Leguizamon scored three second-place finishes followed by a pair of thirds and another second-place finish at Mid-Ohio. The constant podium finisher had help bringing GRG to the top of the standings from Benjamin Pedersen of Copenhagen, Denmark, who also visited the podium all three rounds in his F3 debut. Pedersen is not entered for NJMP but will return to the roster at Road Atlanta.
“The break in the schedule has allowed me to spend more time with the team developing the car through testing. I’ve also been training on the SIM and with my personal trainer to increase my strength and endurance,” said Leguizamon, secured the FRP Formula Atlantic Championship one event early. “New Jersey is a track that I have experience competing on, so we expect to have good results. I want to push hard for results to get Global Racing Group that first win that it deserves.”
Southern Motorsports has also spent its time off learning more about the car.
“We took delivery of the car just a couple days before the inaugural event. With the time off we were able to test the new car to meticulously work out the kinks we found in the first two races of the season,” said JP Southern, Southern Motorsports owner. “We have also been busy race preparing the F3 car in Indianapolis, working with cockpit experts to maximize the driver’s environment and safety. We have been very impressed with the open mindedness and communication that Onroak Automotive has shown with the teams to include the speed of the updates released to fulfilling their promise to make the car the best it can be.”
Team Championship points are calculated from teams’ top-two drivers’ standings from each individual race. In case of a tie, the team with the most race wins will be awarded the higher position.
