Drift Masters Rd5
Germany – Hockenheimring

This past weekend saw the world famous Hockenheimring F1 circuit in Germany, taken over by Round 5 of the Drift Masters GP Championship. It promised to be the fastest track on the DMGP calendar, and it did not disappoint. With over a million online views and the prestigious Mercedes Benz Tribune full with spectators, it was a must watch for any drift fan.

Baggsy was back with the #PS13V8. After teething issues with the new build, the guys at SB Motorsport had been hard at work preparing the car ready for Germany. It was time to get the weekend underway on the Friday with pre qualifying practice.

During the last practice session, Baggsy’s #PS13V8 would drop a valve. With no time to fix the issue, the team made the decision to run the car on just 7 cylinders for Qualifying. Limping the car through two qualifying runs, Baggsy took the 29th qualifying position ensuring him a place in the Top 32 competition. Acorn Insurance Motorsport teammate Nigel Colfer took the 14th position ready for the main event.

Saturday morning saw tandem battle practice for the drivers, before heading into the main competition on Saturday afternoon. The team had been busy overnight fitting new GM Performance heads from Partsworld Performance to Baggsy’s PS13, ready for the competition.

First up was Baggsy in his Top 32 battle against Christian Erlandsson from Sweden. Baggsy would take the chase position for the first run. But after a false start from Erlandsson, the pair would return to the start line for a reset. Baggsy would follow in once again, but after slight contact during a transition the steering arm snapped forcing Baggsy to bow out of the competition.

Teammate and Acorn Insurance Motorsport driver Nigel Colfer would work his way through to the Great 8 before being knocked out of the competition by Benediktas Cirba from Lithuania. After number of ‘One More Times’ and a fast, technical track. Getting to this stage of the competition was equal to being on the podium of most competitions around the world!

Next up is the final round of Drift Masters GP 2018. Mondello Park in Ireland will play host to the double header event, which consist of the Irish Drift Championship final on Saturday and the DMGP final on Sunday. It promises to be an amazing event, with a number of international drivers, and a sell out crowd in attendance.

Baggsy: Round 5 of Drift Masters GP was a Tough weekend at Hockenheimring. Practice on Friday went really well, then just before qualifying the engine dropped a valve. The SB Motorsport made the decision to send me out on just the 7 cylinders in hope we could get a qualifying score in. With the car limping, I managed to score the 29th qualifying position.  After rectifying the dropped valve issue overnight, we got some good tandem practice in on Saturday morning before the main event. During our Top 32 battle we had contact, causing the steering arm to break and unfortunately ending the weekend early. Unfortunately that is drifting, and contact is sometimes unavoidable. But we had an awesome weekend none the less, and it was a great event as always. Nigel pushed really hard all weekend, and managed to make it all the way through to the Great 8. The level of driving and the technical track layouts keep increasing each round, and I cant wait to get to Mondello Park for Round 6, the final in a couple of weeks. As always, a big thank you to the team, sponsors and everyone that helped with keeping us on track over the weekend.
