Dominic Scelzi Closes Season With Top-10 Result at Copper Classic

Inside Line Promotions – QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (Nov. 28, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi capped a successful season by scoring a top-10 finish last weekend during the Copper Classic.

Scelzi was driving for the Van Lare Family for the first time this season during the ASCS Southwest Region doubleheader hosted by Arizona Speedway. The action began on Friday when Scelzi qualified 17th quickest.

“We had to dig ourselves out of a hole,” he said. “We started behind the eight ball, but we gained on it throughout the night.”

Scelzi finished where he started – second – in a heat race. That missed a spot in the feature redraw by only one position and lined him up ninth for the A Main.

“We were good early, but it was tough to pass,” he said. “I never could get the bottom going as good as some of the other guys could.”

Scelzi battled inside the top 10 throughout the main event before posting an eighth-place finish, which marked his 21st top 10 of the season. Here is a link to watch the A Main: https://youtu.be/sg5hU9pWUGk.

The weekend wrapped up on Saturday with Scelzi timing in seventh quickest in qualifying. He finished third in a heat race to line up 15th in the main event.

“It was tough to pass again,” he said. “Gio (Scelzi) and I were racing pretty hard midway through the race. I went to slide him and realized I wasn’t going to clear him. I backed out of it and that cost me a lot of ground. Just that little bit ended up with me being lapped shortly after. Then the caution came out one lap later and that was that.”

Dominic Scelzi, who was battling just outside the top 10, was caught a lap down with the late caution. He passed the only other driver ahead of him who was one lap down before the race ended with an 11th-place finish. Here is a link to watch the feature: https://youtu.be/g_kLO5fjozE.

“Our finishing results were a little disappointing, but we were really, really fast,” he said. “I’m happy coming away with a top 10. I’m sure if we go back next year for that race we’ll know where we need to be and I’ll do a better job as a driver. Thank you to the Van Lare Family for the opportunity.”
