Giovanni Scelzi Regains King of the West-NARC Points Lead After Career-Best Finish at Ocean Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – WATSONVILLE, Calif. (July 18, 2017) – Giovanni Scelzi recorded his career-best result at Ocean Speedway last Saturday to regain the lead in the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series championship standings with only four races remaining this season.

Scelzi and the Roth Motorsports team opened the night by qualifying seventh quickest at the bullring. Scelzi then maneuvered from third to win a heat race and earn a spot in the dash. He finished where he started – sixth – in the dash to start the main event on the outside of the third row.

“We were up to third at one point late in the race,” he said. “I threw a few too many sliders and got myself in a bad spot. I left the door open and a couple of guys got by me at the end. It’s a place I really struggle at and haven’t really got going. It wasn’t the result we wanted, but it’s a track I have trouble getting comfortable at so I’m happy we found something there.”

Scelzi ended with a sixth-place result, which was good enough to boost him back on top of a torrid points battle.

It was also a strong rebound following a sour ending to the previous night at the quarter-mile oval, where Scelzi timed in 11th quickest and won a heat race before he was involved in a crash during the dash.

“A car in front of me hit the fence off turn two and went up in the air,” he said. “He landed on the down rails and bent the frame. I think we got something figured out and we had good speed all weekend. To have a car fly up and land on top of us is unfortunate.”

The team was unable to resume competition that night and pulled down the backup car for Saturday’s show.

“It was rough to get in a crash the first night, but I’m happy with the speed we showed and the comfort we gained,” he said. “I’m excited to see where we stack up the next time we go to Ocean Speedway.”
