Continuous Qualifying Improvement Brings Marathon Petroleum’s Allen Johnson Determination for Norwalk Raceday

NORWALK, Ohio (June 24, 2017) – In the most closely packed Pro Stock field in ages, Marathon Petroleum Co./J&J Racing Dodge Dart driver Allen Johnson will take on the competition from the No. 9 spot at the 11th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park.

On Friday, the 2012 Pro Stock World Champion began qualifying with a 6.654-second pass at 207.21 mph. Johnson and crew chief Adam Hornberger adjusted the tune-up to accommodate the ever-changing weather and improved by over two-thousandths when he clocked in with a 6.633, 207.56.

Starting Saturday in the No. 8 position, Johnson made a big improvement once again when he clocked in with a 6.623, 208.91. The Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing driver finished qualifying with his best run of the weekend – a 6.619, 208.59.

No. 9 Johnson will race No. 8 Chris McGaha in the first round of eliminations on Sunday morning.

“I’ve said this the last few races but we really do have a good car right now,” Johnson said. “It’s just two or three thousandths moves you four or five positions. The cars making perfect runs are in the top five and you got six more grouped together within three thousandths so I think tomorrow will be a driver’s day, for sure. If I can do my job as a driver, we should do well tomorrow.”
