After six weeks off, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series teams headed out to Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas for the Toyota Tundra 250. On Thursday, teams participated in two afternoon practice sessions. Brett Moffitt recorded the 18th- and 15th-fastest times, while Timothy Peters was 16th and 17th respectively. On Friday afternoon, teams competed in two rounds of single-truck knockout qualifying. Brett Moffitt and Timothy Peters both transferred into the second round to compete for the pole, where Moffitt earned the seventh starting position and Peters the ninth. After 167 laps at the 1.5-mile facility, Moffitt broke even with a seventh-place finish, while Peters finished 13th.

Brett Moffitt and the No. 7 Red Horse Racing team earned their second top-ten finish in as many races at Kansas Speedway in the Toyota Tundra 250. On Thursday afternoon, NASCAR Camping World Series teams participated in two practice sessions, where Moffitt put the 18th and 15th fastest times on the board. On Friday afternoon, teams returned under sunny skies for two rounds of single-truck, knockout qualifying. Moffitt transferred to the final round to put the No. 7 Toyota Tundra in the seventh starting position. The green flag flew just before 8 p.m. CT and as the sun set and temperatures cooled, Moffitt began to report that his Tundra was loose handling in the turns. The race offered plenty of opportunities to correct the handling condition with five cautions in the first stage alone and eleven total yellow flags. Crew chief Butch Hylton brought Moffitt to pit road under a lap 25 caution and the team changed four Goodyear tires, loaded the tank full of Sunoco race fuel and made several adjustments. Moffitt ended the first stage at lap 40 in the 10th position, earning one stage point. The No. 7 team elected to stay out during the stage break and began Stage 2 on the front row, in second position. Still fighting a free handling condition, Moffitt finished the second stage in eighth position, earning three stage points. A quick stop by the No. 7 team put him out in seventh position to start the final 87-lap stage. Moffitt climbed into the top five, but after several more caution flags and one final stop for four tires and fuel, Moffitt earned his second top-ten finish in four races in 2017, with a seventh-place in the No. 7 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra.

“We unloaded yesterday and we weren’t very good, but we worked on the No. 7 Toyota Tundra all day on Thursday and they figured some things out and got it better for today. We strategized our way to a good finish and were able to earn some stage points and finish in the top-ten. It isn’t exactly where we wanted to be, but we’re working on it, and we had a good test at Charlotte (Motor Speedway), so we’ll see what next week holds.”

Peters Earns 13th-Place Finish at Kansas
Timothy Peters collected a 13th-place finish after 167 grueling laps in the Toyota Tundra 250 at Kansas Speedway. The fourth event on the 2017 calendar began with Peters and the No. 17 Red Horse Racing Toyota team posting the 16th and 17th-quickest times in Thursday’s practice sessions. In qualifying, Peters and crew chief Chad Kendrick found additional speed and advanced to the pole round, earning the ninth starting spot. At the drop of the green flag, handling issues hindered Peters’ quest for his first Kansas victory. The splitter of the No. 17 Tundra made significant contact with the track on the opening six-lap run which required an early pit stop to raise the front of the truck. Peters rejoined the field in 27th, quickly regained numerous positions and finished Stage 1 in 15th despite a tight balance. Stage 2 saw Peters pit for a second time to raise the front of the truck to aid the handling characteristics in addition to other various chassis adjustments. Peters continued to fight the same tight condition, and finished Stage 2 in the same position, 15th. Under the Stage 2 caution period, the Red Horse Racing team gave Peters the quick pit work needed to regain track position, advancing him seven positions on pit road. With four fresh tires, Peters restarted eighth on lap 87, and muscled his Toyota Tundra as high as the sixth position by lap 92. However, the tight balance persisted and relegated Peters outside of the top 10. Peters pitted for the final time on lap 127 for four fresh tires and started 10th on the evening’s final restart. Despite the numerous adjustments, Peters continued to combat a tight condition on the final run to the checkers and finished 13th. After four of 23 races, Peters and the No. 17 team sit fifth the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship standings.

“We missed the balance tonight and had to fight for every spot all race. We had the splitter on the racetrack to start the night and by the end we were just too tight to stay inside the top-10. Chad (Kendrick) and the whole team stayed with it and threw every adjustment we had at it tonight, but we could never quite find the balance we needed. The good news is we have another chance to make up these points next Friday at Charlotte.”
