Allen Johnson Begins U.S. Nationals Quest from No. 7 Spot

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 4, 2016) – The U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway sets the stage for one of the biggest drag racing events in the world. Allen Johnson will begin raceday tomorrow in the No. 7 spot.

The prestigious U.S. Nationals begins with one qualifying run on Friday evening. Johnson set the tone for the weekend when he started his qualifying efforts with a 6.645-second pass at 208.36 mph.

On Saturday’s first session, Johnson clocked in with a slowed 6.678, 208.39 in the heat of the afternoon. The Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing Dodge Dart made a big move on Saturday’s final run when he clocked in with a much improved 6.611, 208.71.

Johnson went into Sunday in the top half in the No. 7 and when on any other weekend, Sunday would be raceday, Johnson had two more opportunities to advance up the ladder before eliminations on Monday. Johnson showed his team’s consistency in the fourth round of qualifying when he crossed the finish line with a 6.610, 208.59. Johnson closed out qualifying with a 6.640, 208.59.

“We’ve been kind of all over the board so far this weekend,” Johnson said. “We just haven’t been able to find the sweet spot yet with the car but we felt that way at Denver and we ended up winning the race!”

Johnson will have lane choice over Drew Skillman in the first round of eliminations tomorrow.
