Pro Stock Champion Allen Johnson Sets Sights on Mopar Mile-High Nationals to Continue Reign as King of the Mountain

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (July 19, 2016) – If one person has been dominant at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, it would be Allen Johnson. Nicknamed the “King of the Mountain”, Johnson matches his six wins at the event with six No. 1 qualifiers throughout his notable career since his debut in 1996. Reaching his tenth final round at last year’s event, Johnson is eager to get back to Bandimere Speedway and ink his seventh Mile-High win.

Last year, Allen Johnson and Larry Morgan had one of the most memorable final rounds in the history of NHRA Pro Stock and maybe even NHRA entirely. In a staging duel that lasted over 90 seconds against Morgan, Johnson may not have come home with the win that day but he proved to every person in attendance why he has created a legacy of being the “King of the Mountain”.

The Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing Dodge Dart team drove straight from Chicago to test in Denver in preparation for this weekend’s event and it showed Johnson that this race might be the most exciting yet in the new era of Pro Stock.

“I think the class will be closer in Denver than we have been all year so far in mph and e.t.,” Johnson said. “Based on our test last week, I think it’s a lot easier to tune the fuel injection compared to the carburetors. I was surprised with how quick we went. We’re getting closer to winning every time we test and we have some new hardware coming on board this weekend that I hope will pay some dividends.”

Qualifying at the 37th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals begins on Friday, July 22nd with two qualifying sessions at 5:00 and 7:30 p.m. Qualifying continues on Saturday, July 23rd with two qualifying sessions at 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. Eliminations begin at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 24th.
