Marathon Petroleum Dodge Dart Pays Dividends for Allen Johnson in Qualifying at Route 66 Raceway

JOLIET, Ill. (July 9, 2016) – Pro Stock World Champion Allen Johnson’s team has been hitting the dyno since they arrived home from Norwalk and it translated into four consistent passes during qualifying this weekend at the K&N Filters Route 66 NHRA Nationals. Johnson promoted himself to the top half of the field in the No. 5 spot thanks to the hard work of the Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing team and Johnson’s impeccable driving.

Friday’s first session came in the late afternoon at Route 66 Raceway. The Greeneville, Tenn.-based driver clocked in with a 6.642-second pass at 208.75 mph and backed it up with a 6.620, 208.39 in prime conditions in the second qualifying run at nearly 8 p.m. Friday night.

For Saturday’s first qualifying run, Johnson had a bracket car when he ran only .005-second different with a 6.625, 208.55 the night before. He improved once again in the final session with a 6.612, 209.20.

Many racers will tell you that the track preparation at Route 66 Raceway leaves the starting line in pristine condition and Johnson feels no different.

“This track is awesome,” Johnson said. “We got the car really workin’ good this weekend and that allows us to make runs that are consistent. When we’re consistent, it lets us tune on both the car and the engine because we aren’t all over the board with the car. It pays dividends when you can make four good runs.”

Johnson wrapped up qualifying in the No. 5 position and will have lane choice over No. 12 Kenny Delco on Sunday morning.

“Delco can run good and cut a light and he proved that a few races ago when he went to the semifinals,” he said. “But like I always say, I go up there and race myself and that’s our plan for tomorrow. We made four solid passes this weekend and we’re right in the middle of the pack with them and I feel good going into tomorrow.”
