Scelzi Earns Career-Best World of Outlaws Result at Thunderbowl

Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (March 14, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi registered his career-best World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series finish at Thunderbowl Raceway last weekend.

Scelzi followed Friday’s rainout by capping the weekend on Saturday with a 13th-place result on the fast oval.

“It wasn’t what we hoped for, but in all reality it was a good night,” he said. “We’re improving every time we hit the track.”

Saturday’s event began with Scelzi qualifying eighth quickest in his group despite going out early on a track that improved throughout time trials.

“The track got faster throughout qualifying,” he said. “We were second quick for a while. As the track got faster we ended up eighth in our group. It was a big confidence boost to lay down a couple of good laps for where we went out.”

That lined Scelzi up on the outside of the second row for a heat race.

“I had a really good start, but the outside seemed to not be the place to start,” he said. “The bottom was where you wanted to be. Because of the rain the night before pretty much everyone was on the bottom and there wasn’t any passing.”

Scelzi finished fourth to lock into the 15th starting position for the main event.

“It was pretty much about just staying alive,” he said. “We’d get a couple of positions and lose a couple. The times we really gained were on the restarts. We fell back to 18th at one point, but rallied to get up to 13th. That was big for me, especially with the car count and the talent of guys running there.”

Scelzi will resume racing this Friday and Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., for the FVP Western Spring Shootout with the World of Outlaws. He has won a pair of King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series races at the track, including his first ever in 2013 and one last year.

“I feel like you circle tracks on the schedule you really look forward to going to with the Outlaws and this is one for me,” he said. “It’s always been a place that’s been good to me. I have extremely high hopes for the weekend.”
