Scelzi Shows Speed Throughout First Weekend of Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown

Inside Line Promotions – SOMERTON, Ariz. (Jan. 5, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi accomplished his first objective during the opening weekend of the 2nd annual Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown.

Scelzi advanced into Friday’s feature out of more than 45 drivers and he was on pace to repeat that success on Saturday before an incident sidelined him early in a B Main at Cocopah Speedway.

“I’m really happy with how everything has gone so far,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of speed at times. I feel like we found a good baseline that we’ll be able to go into the next few nights with. Everything we came here wanting to learn we have.”

The weekend began on Friday with Scelzi advancing from ninth to sixth place during a heat race. He then ended fifth in a qualifier, which lined the Roth Motorsports backed entry up on the outside of the front row for a 15-lap B Main.

“In the B Main we were extremely strong,” he said. “I could run the top or the bottom. I felt great out there.”

Scelzi placed third to lock into the 21st starting position for the 30-lap main event. However, he narrowly dodged a crash on the opening lap, which cost him a lot of ground, and the track became tough to pass on a handful of laps into the race. That forced Scelzi to settle for a 21st -place result.

The weekend wrapped up on Saturday with Scelzi ending seventh in a heat race thanks to a hole in the right rear tire. He then rallied from seventh to fourth place during a qualifier. Once again, that put him on the front row of a B Main.

“On that first lap we were really fast,” he said. “I thought we would challenge for the win and at least transfer. Unfortunately, I hit a hole in the track wrong and it broke the left front arm on the race car.”

Scelzi was unable to restart the race and he was credited with 11th in the consolation race.

Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown competition returns on Wednesday with races at Cocopah Speedway on Friday and Saturday as well.
