Giovanni Scelzi Captures Three Wins, Including Golden Driller, During Testing Season

Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (Dec. 1, 2015) – Giovanni Scelzi scored a trio of victories during his limited 2015 campaign.

The biggest win was his first, which came the opening week of the year during the 30th annual Speedway Motors Tulsa Shootout at Tulsa Expo Raceway in Tulsa, Okla. Scelzi led all 25 laps of the “A” Class winged micro sprint feature to capture his first career Golden Driller at the marquee micro sprint event.

“That was definitely the highlight,” he said. “It was cool to win it. It’s a weight lifted off your shoulders. Now it’s about how many can we win. We have the car and now the motors to win.”

Scelzi also picked up a pair of triumphs in his home state of California, where he was victorious at Plaza Park Raceway in Visalia on July 4 during the Budweiser Outlaw Nationals and Aug. 21.

“This year wasn’t a stellar year,” he said. “It was better than what the stats show. At the beginning we were having some mechanical problems. It seemed like we had speed, but we were caught up in bad circumstances. I feel like we’ve definitely gotten better.”

Scelzi’s team elected to use most of the season as a testing ground.

“I think we had four DNFs in the first six races,” he said. “We weren’t running for points. It’s like, why are we playing it safe? That’s when we started changing bars, changing shocks, changing engines. We really fine-tuned the setup.”

While Scelzi’s season was up and down, it had moments of brightness. In addition to the victories, Scelzi placed third out of nearly 50 competitors during the inaugural California Speedweek, which included four races at different tracks during a four-day span in July.

“We learned a lot and have gained in a lot of areas so I’m excited for what 2016 will hold,” he said. “I want to thank my family, fans and sponsors for supporting me through the ups and downs. I’m very confident we’re on the right track and that we will win a lot of races next year.”

Scelzi is set to kick off 2016 at the 31st annual Speedway Motors Tulsa Shootout, which will be held Dec. 30 to Jan. 2 at Tulsa Expo Raceway.
