The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returned to Kansas Speedway this weekend for the fourth race of the 2015 season. The Nos. 11 and 17 Toyota Tundra teams posted the 15th and 17th fastest times, respectively, during Thursday’s single practice session, and returned Friday afternoon for knock-out qualifying. Both of the Red Horse Racing teams advanced to the third round, with Kennedy and the No. 11 Local Motors/SpongeBob SquarePants team earning the fifth starting position for the Toyota Tundra 250, while Timothy Peters secured the 12th starting position for the No. 17 Tundra. After 167 laps around the 1.5-mile speedway, Peters finished fourth and Kennedy finished 26th after picking up debris on the grille and causing the engine to overheat on lap 57.

Timothy Peters Earns Fourth-Place Finish at Kansas Speedway

On a cloudy day in Kansas City, Timothy Peters picked up a top-five finish in the Toyota Tundra 250 at Kansas Speedway. On Thursday, teams were able to complete one 90-minute practice session after inclement weather delayed track activity all day and the No. 17 team posted the 17th-fastest time. The team returned to the track for knock-out qualifying on Friday afternoon and Peters advanced to the final round to earn the 12th starting position. After the green flag for the Toyota Tundra 250 at Kansas Speedway was displayed, Peters quickly moved the No. 17 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra into the top 10, but a tight handling condition soon caused him to fall back to 12th. Peters was in and out of the top 10 during the evening race at the 1.5-mile facility. Crew chief Marcus Richmond and the No. 17 team consistently gained positions during pit stops, putting Peters into the top 10 each time. After the final restart on lap 115, Peters was solidly in 10th place, and was able to conserve enough fuel to finish the race in fourth when several of the trucks in front of him had to pit. The top-five finish moved Peters to seventh in the series’ point standings.

Timothy Peters Quote:
“Tonight was a good finish for us. It was definitely a momentum and confidence builder going into Charlotte (Motor Speedway) next week. It eases the pain a little bit for the way the first three races happened, but all in all, everyone on the Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra did a good job tonight.”

Early Exit for Ben Kennedy and the Local Motors/SpongeBob SquarePants Team at Kansas Speedway

This weekend Ben Kennedy and the No. 11 team traded in their signature black and white paint scheme and rolled into Kansas Speedway with a special group on board – SpongeBob SquarePants and friends. The yellow and blue paint scheme and fire suit adorned with the popular Nickelodeon cartoon characters were a sentimental favorite of both adults and children. After a five-week hiatus in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competition, Kennedy and the team were excited to return to racing and were confident that the No. 11 machine would run up front. Kennedy advanced to the final round of Friday’s knockout qualifying session and earned the fifth starting position for that night’s Toyota Tundra 250. When the green flag was displayed, Kennedy demonstrated that the Local Motors/SpongeBob SquarePants Toyota was right where it belonged and quickly overtook the fourth spot. When the yellow flag was displayed on lap 41, crew chief Scott Zipadelli called the young driver to pit road for four fresh Goodyear tires and a full tank of Sunoco fuel. He restarted in the fourth position on lap 47, but five laps later reported that the truck was pushing water. When he returned to pit road, the pit crew removed a windshield tear-off from the truck’s grille and added water to the radiator before sending him back out on the track. The oil temperature continued to rise and Kennedy drove the No. 11 Toyota Tundra to the garage where the team further assessed the situation to find that the motor had expired. With 57 laps completed, he was relegated to a 26th-place finish.

Ben Kennedy Quote:
“It’s just a disappointing ending to what we thought was going to be a great night. The truck was really fast, and was driving great. We picked up a windshield tear-off on the grille after our first pit stop. The temperatures spiked immediately and we lost a lot of water. I drove to pit road and we hoped that with the debris off the grille and by adding some more water to the radiator we would be ok, but unfortunately it was already too late. We were really happy with this Toyota Tundra and will take it to Charlotte (Motor Speedway) next weekend. We had a lot of fun this weekend with SpongeBob SquarePants on the truck, and would like to thank Nickelodeon for that opportunity.”
