Scelzi Maneuvers to Best Finish of Season with Runner-Up Result at Ocean

Inside Line Promotions – WATSONVILLE, Calif. (April 27, 2015) – Dominic Scelzi recorded his best finish of the season last Friday at Ocean Speedway.

Scelzi garnered a runner-up result in his Roth Motorsports backed sprint car during the Ocean Sprints event at the quarter-mile bullring, where he inched one step closer to his first victory of the season.

“We’re really building a solid team,” he said. “We’re making big strides now. All of our ducks are getting in a row and we’re ready to win a race.”

Scelzi, who elected to go to his spare car last week, kicked off the event by qualifying sixth quickest.

“It was really good for when we went out,” he said. “The track went away a little bit. It seemed like we were the only car in the last couple of groups that did any good.”

That lined Scelzi up on the inside of the second row for a heat race.

“I got up to second right away and ran down the leader,” he said. “I was running the top and everybody else was running the bottom. I got under (the leader) going into turn three and slid up in turn four.”

The heat race win locked Scelzi into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 3 to start third in the 30-lap feature.

“The track was really slick and wide,” he said. “I got into second right away behind Brad Furr. I was stalking him and right as I was about to make a move the yellow came out around Lap 10. I was right on his rear bumper and was about to drive around him.”

Furr took off on the restart and left Scelzi with his hands full with other competitors battling for a spot on the podium. Scelzi made a late-race bid to close the deficit, but came up one spot short of his goal.

“The yellow flags didn’t fall the way we needed them to,” Scelzi said. “We were one of the fastest, if not the fastest, cars out there. A win is right around the corner.”

Scelzi will celebrate his 18th birthday this Saturday when he competes at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., for the 25th annual Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series.
