Gary Scelzi Joining ESPN2 Broadcast of NHRA U.S. Nationals This Weekend

Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (Aug. 26, 2014) – Four-time NHRA champion Gary Scelzi will join the television booth throughout the 60th annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals this weekend.

Scelzi, who is the father of sprint car driver Dominic and micro sprint competitor Giovanni, will work as a color commentator along with Dave Rieff and Mike Dunn during the premier NHRA Mello Yellow Series event at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis.

Qualifying rounds will be shown on ESPN2 this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Eastern) and from 5-7 p.m. (Eastern). Eliminations will be broadcast on Monday from Noon to 6 p.m. (Eastern).

“I did this show with them last year and they asked me back,” Gary Scelzi said. “It’s an honor to be asked to do this, especially for the biggest race in drag racing. I’m excited for the people who support the sprint car scene to see where my roots came from.”

Scelzi claimed four championships and numerous top fuel races, including the 1999 U.S. Nationals.

“A lot of people who have never won a world championship say if you’ve won the U.S. Nationals it’s almost as big,” he said. “With it being a special event with all the legends such as Don Prudhomme, Don Garlits, Shirley Muldowney, Ed ‘The Ace’ McCulloch, Kenny Bernstein and Bob Glidden, it could be the last time all these legends are in one place. Those are the biggest names in drag racing history and they will all be at the U.S. Nationals.”
