Giovanni Scelzi Swept Up in a Pair of Crashes at Plaza Park Raceway

Inside Line Promotions – VISALIA, Calif. (Aug. 24, 2014) – Giovanni Scelzi was involved in a pair of crashes on Friday at Plaza Park Raceway, where his results didn’t match his speed.

“We were really good in both cars,” he said. “We were crazy fast in the nonwing one.”

Scelzi qualified second quickest in the nonwing micro sprint class and used a last-lap pass to win his heat race after starting fourth. That lined him up on the outside of the front row for the 30-lap feature.

“Whenever we caught lapped traffic I got through it better and took the lead for about two laps,” he said. “Then a guy spun in front of us coming out of turn four and we smashed into him.”

Scelzi, who took the top spot around the midpoint of the feature, was unable to finish the main event after sustaining front end damage. He was credited with an 18th-place finish.

Unfortunately, things ended as frustrating for Scelzi in the winged micro sprint class. After qualifying 12th quickest and rallying from sixth to fourth place early in his heat race, Scelzi collided with a spinning driver and was unable to resume the race.

That lined him up on the outside of the sixth row for the main event.

“In the winged main event we were trying some new stuff and I was looking forward to it,” he said. “Starting where we were we figured we had nothing to lose. In turns three and four on the first lap there was a big pileup and I was right in it. It knocked the front end out of it.”

Scelzi’s night ended early as he finished 16th.
