Scelzi Nets Sixth-Place Result at Ocean Speedway Entering Johnny Key Classic

Inside Line Promotions – WATSONVILLE, Calif. (Aug. 18, 2014) – A late decision to tackle Ocean Speedway yielded a great result for Dominic Scelzi last Friday.

After qualifying 19th quickest, Scelzi and his Roth Motorsports backed sprint car charged to his ninth top 10 of the season.

“I didn’t qualify as good as I wanted to, but we were able to get rolling in the heat race and feature,” he said. “We had good speed all night once we made a gear change.”

Scelzi maneuvered from fifth to third place in his heat race, which locked him into the main event. After starting 17th in the feature, Scelzi quickly began to work toward the front.

“We just got up top and the track slicked off so I was able to work my way up to fourth with about six laps to go,” he said. “I turned down to go under a guy and got hit in turns one and two, spun around and kept going.”

While Scelzi continued after his spin, his left rear tire was cut. It drastically affected the handling in the closing laps and Scelzi managed to earn a sixth-place finish.

He will return to Ocean Speedway this Saturday for the 54th annual Johnny Key Classic.

“I feel like if we can qualify good we’ll be alright,” he said. “It’s going to be really difficult if we don’t due to the amount of really good cars.”

Scelzi rallied from 22nd to eighth to garner the Hard Charger Award last year during the prestigious event.
