Allen Johnson Makes Best Run of Season at NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, Heading to Atlanta with Progress Made

CONCORD, N.C. (April 30, 2017) – Marathon Petroleum Co./J&J Racing Dodge Dart driver Allen Johnson fell in the first round of eliminations at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals but the team is looking to next weekend’s race in Atlanta with fresh eyes and a positive outlook on their current race setup.

Johnson qualified No. 12 and had a first round quad against Chris McGaha, Jason Line, and Alan Prusiensky. Johnson improved his qualifying time by over four-thousandths in the first round when he clocked in with a 6.612-second pass at 209.26 mph. The Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing team made great improvements in that round but Johnson not able to advance to the second round over McGaha’s 6.601, 210.24 and Line’s 6.594, 210.67.

“That’s the closest we’ve run to the field all season,” Johnson said. “If we can qualify like that, we can get a better spot on the ladder and that’ll give us a better draw on raceday. We’ve had a lot of progress this weekend and I’m tickled to death. This weekend was definitely a step in the right direction.”

Late-Race Crash Spoils Impressive Comeback For Motorcraft/Quick Lane Team

April 30, 2017

The official finish of Sunday’s 400-lapper at Richmond International Raceway doesn’t reflect it, but the driver and crew of the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion showed that they can bounce back from a dismal mid-race performance and contend for a top-five finish at the end.

Ryan Blaney started from the outside pole in the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Fusion but soon found himself running outside the top 15, and with radio problems that limited his communication with his crew chief and spotter.

But crew chief Jeremy Bullins and his fellow team leaders on the pit box stayed in the game, so to speak, and kept adjusting the chassis of the No. 21 on every pit stop. Bullins figured correctly on strategy calls including short-pitting with a little under 100 laps left to run. And each time Blaney drove to pit road, his over-the-wall crew either maintained his position in the running order or gained him spots, as many as three on one occasion. Austin Dillon and the No. 3 AAA Team Finish 20th at
Richmond International Raceway

“I wish we would have stayed out on that last pit stop. That was my call to pit and it didn’t work out for us this time. The No. 17 car was right with us and he stayed out and ended up finishing fourth. Our AAA Chevrolet was fast during portions of the race but during other portions of the race we struggled with handling. Overall we had a lot of obstacles to overcome today and we worked hard as a team so I am proud of our efforts.”

CONCORD, N.C. (April 30) – The 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season has been a bit disjointed for Monster Energy Top Fuel dragster driver Brittany Force.

CHRIS MCGAHA, HARLOW SAMMONS RACING, HARLOW SAMMONS OF ODESSA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 4 qualifier, earned first Pro Stock win of season and fifth of career):

Q: HOW DOES THIS RANK AMONG YOUR VICTORIES?
CHRIS MCGAHA: “All of them are special in their own way. The first one at Sonoma was pretty sweet. Waited too long, and got another one right behind it. Each one has their own story. This one I always felt like it should have been my first. In ’14 we had a dominant car, won our quads nearly every time we went up there. Eventually shook and blew the motor up. That motor never really recovered until this week. That’s the same motor then as it is now.”

“Those were the longest 50 laps of my life. I have a button on the steering wheel to check the lap count, ever lap I was pressing the button. It was the most stressful end of the race I’ve ever lived, but the car was just phenomenal. It was an incredible day for the Menards car, Chevy, incredible job with the aero package for these kinds of tracks and on the engine as well. Since the beginning of the season we worked so closely it’s been fun, I have to say. Obviously, thanks to Verizon as well for all the support that they give us. I’ve got to tell you, this is just incredible. For me, this is my best win because it’s so strategic to win on an oval. You have to really study what the others are doing, how your car is responding adjust it during the race to be good at the end and today was just exactly a perfect day. I couldn’t be any happier.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR–Phoenix–Post Race
