KYLE LARSON QUALIFIES SECOND AT WATKINS GLEN
Team Chevy Earns Two of the Top Three Starting Spots; 6 of Top 12

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – (August 6, 2016) – Kyle Larson ran a fast lap of 126.233 mph/ 1:9.871 in his No. 42 Target Chevrolet SS to earn a front row starting position for Sunday’s Cheez-It 355 Sprint Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International. Larson’s second place qualifying effort marked his fifth top-10 start of the 2016 season, and his second in three races at the newly repaved, high speed, 2.45-mile, 7-turn road course. Paul Menard and the No. 2 Chevrolet Team Lock In Third-Straight Top-Three Finish at Watkins Glen International

“We had a good qualifying effort yesterday. I think we kind of surprised ourselves a little bit actually. We were chasing Kyle (Busch) and Kyle (Larson) and qualified third. So, I’m really proud of that effort. Our car didn’t take off very well at the start of the race, so we had to adjust track bar and play with the air pressure a little bit. The last run of the race was our best of the day. I think we ran our fastest lap right towards the end. Our Richmond Water Heaters/Menards Chevy had really good long-run speed. The leaders would gap us a little bit and we could maintain or run them down slightly but just not enough. Overall, I’m really proud of Justin Alexander since it was his first time calling an (NASCAR) XFINITY Series race with our team. We’ve got a solid group of guys. The pit crew had fast pit stops, we had good race strategy, we were just one spot short at the end.”

– Paul Menard

Ty Dillon Leads Laps, Muscles his Way to 11th-Place Finish

“Our Rheem Chevy struggled to get through Turn 1 and the carousel turn throughout the whole race. We definitely showed some speed there in the beginning and were able to use pit strategy to lead a few laps. It definitely hurt us when we got that penalty for deviating from the commitment line on pit road. I just saw the red lights come out so I tried to get off real quick. That’s just a little bit of bad luck, but we bounced back and almost had a top 10. I really like road racing, so I’m glad we get to do it again next week.”

– Ty Dillon

Brandon Jones Gains Nine Spots to Finish 13th in Season’s First Road Course Race

“It was a pretty solid weekend all around for the No. 33 Roland team. It was our first road course race of the year and my second ever (NASCAR) XFINITY Series race on a road course, so I definitely can’t complain with a 13th-place finish. I felt like we ran consistent all weekend long and it ended up being a pretty good finish today. I am looking forward to getting to Mid-Ohio next weekend. Since I have run there in the past, I think we’re going to be that much better.”

– Brandon Jones

Brendan Gaughan Marches to a Eighth-Place Finish in Caution-Filled Event at Watkins Glen International

“We had an excellent South Point Chevrolet today. We raced into the top five before a pit-road scoring mishap dropped us from third to seventh. The front bumper was literally 10 feet from the pit entrance line when pit road was closed, forcing us to make a pass through. Our braking system is phenomenal, so I could out-brake a lot of cars in the field. We had great strategy and great stops on pit road. The car was better than eighth, but we haven’t had a good finish at The Glen in a while, so we will take it. We will move onto Mid-Ohio and hopefully things will fall our way.”

Panch, Wood Brothers Ruled Watkins Glen, Northern Tour in ‘65

August 6, 2016

NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. always had a great vision for the sport of stock car racing, and a big part of that master plan was to take the sport from its Southern roots and spread it across America.

One of his tools was the old “Northern Tour.”

From the mid-1950s through the early 1970s, when the series now known as Sprint Cup left Daytona International Speedway after the Firecracker 400 on the Fourth of July, a caravan of racers headed north. Continue reading Panch, Wood Brothers Ruled Watkins Glen, Northern Tour in ‘65

Western Swing a Marathon Not a Sprint for Allen Johnson

Western Swing a Marathon Not a Sprint for Allen Johnson

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (August 2, 2016) – Marathon Petroleum’s Allen Johnson makes his way to the upper part of the Pacific Northwest this weekend for the 29th annual Protect the Harvest NHRA Northwest Nationals.

Johnson has been in the finals three times at Pacific Raceways and took home the win in 2006 against Tom Martino. One decade later, he’s anticipating a good weekend ahead regardless of his trying second round loss last weekend in Sonoma.

“I always look forward to racing in Seattle,” Johnson said. “It’s one of our favorite places to go and we always seem to do pretty good up there. Our goal is to keep our momentum from our Denver win and maintain lane choice every round on Sunday. If we could’ve kept lane choice on Sunday in Sonoma, we would’ve had a better outcome.”

Including Seattle, there are three races left in the regular season before the point standings are reset for the Countdown to the Championship and it’s of upmost importance to start the countdown as high in the points as you can be.

“Our mission for the next three races is to try to get closer to the front two or three cars before the Countdown starts,” he added.

Qualifying for the Protect the Harvest NHRA Northwest Nationals begins on Friday August 5th with two qualifying sessions at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. (PT) Two more qualifying sessions will take place on Saturday August 6th at 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Eliminations will be at 11:00 am on Sunday morning starting with Top Fuel.
