TEAM CHEVY QUALIFYING NOTES AND QUOTES
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2016

SIMON PAGENAUD, NO. 22 HEWLETT PACKARD ENTERPRISE TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, won the pole for Sunday’s GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, the 2016 Verizon IndyCar season finale, with a quick lap of one minute, 16.2565 seconds. Pagenaud entered the race weekend with a 43 point lead over teammate Will Power for the championship title, by earning the Verizon P1 award, his seventh of the season, he now heads into Sunday’s finale needing to finish fifth or better to claim his first career Verizon IndyCar Series championship. Pagenaud led a 1-2-3-4 Chevrolet Aero Kit with integrated 2.2 liter V6 engine qualifying sweep.

HOW GRATIFYING WAS BEATING YOUR TEAMMATE HELIO CASTRONEVES WHO WAS ON A NEW SET OF STICKER REDS?
“It’s very gratifying, but the biggest thing is how good the car has been through the whole qualifying session. We talked about it this morning in practice and we have been working on making the car as good as it could before the reds. It was always about guessing, we don’t get to test the red firestone tires. Every time we put them on it’s a dream. It’s awesome. I’m so proud of the HP Chevrolet team. What a dream season, seven poles, I mean it’s unbelievable. I want to thank Verizon as well and the new LTE advanced network, which is super-fast. Obviously, I’m super excited. I knew we could do it, but this has not been my favorite track in the past. It doesn’t seem to be the case anywhere anymore.”

DID YOU THINK AT ALL ABOUT CHAMPIONSHIP AND THE ONE POINT YOU GOT AT ALL DURING QUALIFYING?
“No, that is the most enjoyable day. Especially when you do one lap qualifying because the tires here they get so beat up by the track. The tires are awesome, but it’s just there is so much power in the cars and the hairpins and you just murder the rear. So you only have one real lap to do it, so you’ve got to put it all together in that one lap. That is what I call the animal instincts and you don’t think you just go. This is the best moment when you can drive this way.”

CHARLOTTE (Sept. 17) — Five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. was the first drag racer to ever run down zMax Dragway, breaking in the facility with a long, smoky burnout for the benefit of the local and national media back in 2008. On Sunday, he hopes to be the last one standing at the beautiful track, collecting the winner’s trophy of the ninth annual NHRA Carolina Nationals.

“We’d certainly love to win this race,” Coughlin said. “This is the first round of six in the Countdown to the Championship, and we’re going into race day probably as good as we’ve been most of the year in relation to the rest of the field. We’ll get out there and see if we can’t race hard and turn on some win lights.” Continue reading Five-time Pro Stock champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. looking to become a two-time Charlotte winner

Ricky Taylor and Jordan Taylor led all but five of 75 laps Saturday to win the Lone Star Le Mans sports car

Ricky Taylor and Jordan Taylor led all but five of 75 laps Saturday to win the Lone Star Le Mans sports car race for Wayne Taylor Racing and Team Chevy at Circuit of The Americas in the next-to-last round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette Daytona Prototype won for the third time this year, and the Corvette DP program won for the fifth straight race and swept the Prototype podium for the third consecutive event.

RICKY TAYLOR, WAYNE TAYLOR RACING NO. 10 KONICA MINOLTA CORVETTE DP – PROTOTYPE RACE-WINNER: “It was an awesome race. We had the best car today, and not often do you have the best car and everything goes your way and everything goes right. Today, we had a little hiccup with traction control cutting out for a couple of laps; it was a bit of a panic for the guys with about 40 minutes about how we were going to get it working again. With a one-second lead with no traction control, (40 minutes) would have been a long, long time. But they worked through it and Jordan controlled the race after that.”
(ON HIS STINT) The conditions were not that bad. The car was very comfortable inside. The car was great. We were able to build such a good gap and Jordan was able to bring it home from there.”
JORDAN TAYLOR, WAYNE TAYLOR RACING NO. 10 KONICA MINOLTA CORVETTE DP – PROTOTYPE RACE-WINNER: “It was obviously a good day, our third win of the year. We had a strong car so I knew we had a shot at it when Ricky won the pole. Then Ricky had a flawless run, pulled out a 10-second lead and I knew, basically with me finishing it, it was up to me to lose it. I think we pulled it out to 15 seconds and then something happened – either I made a mistake by spinning or we had a traction-control problem. I spun, and the next five laps we were fighting what turned out to be traction-control problems and I was probably freaking out on the radio a little bit. Thankfully, the guys got it sorted, we fixed it. By that time, we only had a two-second lead so the race was back on. It got a little close, but the only thing that made it close was traffic coming and going. It was a good race. We had a little battle, but obviously a great day for us. Konica Minolta and DLL had 70 people here, so it couldn’t have been a better weekend for us.”
(MORE ON THE RACE): “Well the spin, I don’t know if it was my mistake or the problems we were having caused the mistake, but either way I knew with it being my stint I had to kind of bring it back to the guys because of the lead we had that Ricky (Taylor) built. I’m just happy.”
(THIRD STRAIGHT 1-2-3 for CORVETTE DP): “The Corvette DP has been great for years. This was the third race in a row we finished 1-2-3 just shows the dominance of the car. The car’s been developed a lot and we’ve learned a lot. It’s been good to me, it’s been a fun car to drive.”

Led by Ryan Hunter-Reay, Andretti Autosport placed three Honda drivers in the top seven Friday at Sonoma Raceway, in practice for Sunday’s GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, the final race in the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season.

Hunter-Reay, who finished second at Sonoma in both 2014 and ’15, ended the day fourth fastest, with teammate and Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi posting the fifth-quickest time. Carlos Munoz completed the top-seven runners on Friday in his Andretti Autosport Honda.

Activities at Sonoma continue Saturday with final practice and qualifying. Sunday’s 85-lap Indy car season finale starts at 6:30 p.m. EDT, with live network television coverage on the NBC Sports Network.

Ryan Hunter-Reay (#28 Andretti Autosport Honda): “It was a positive day overall. I think we left some time on the table. We know where we have some [handling] imbalances to sort out tonight, [so we can] come back and start Practice Three and carry on into a qualifying effort. It’s a good platform – we’re fourth right now, and it’s encouraging for the DHL team. We’ve finished second here the last two years in a row, so we’re really hoping to climb one more step up that podium this weekend.”

TEAM CHEVY DRIVER PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2016
CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS SIMON PAGENAUD, NO. 22 HEWLETT PACKARD ENTERPRISE TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, AND WILL POWER, NO. 12 VERIZON TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, met with members of the media at Sonoma Raceway and discussed the battle for the Verizon IndyCar Series Championship. Full transcript:
THE MODERATOR: Thank you, everyone, for joining us today for the Verizon IndyCar Series post practice press conference. We’re pleased to be joined by our Team Penske championship contenders Simon Pagenaud and Will Power, who is 43 points behind Simon, leading into the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma at Sonoma Raceway.

Will, you’re obviously the chaser for this race. What are your thoughts now that you’ve been on track and you really feel like you’re getting into the weekend?

WILL POWER: Yeah, really we didn’t do many laps. Only really two hard laps in that session, so… Haven’t really got a feel for where we’re at, if the Honda guys are really good or not. All that stuff is going to make a difference.

I think this next session is going to be real telling. I think everyone is going to run a lot because around the time we’re qualifying the temperatures are going to be the same, and hopefully the wind is. We’ll get more of an idea then.

THE MODERATOR: Why the limited track time? Did you go back and make changes to the car?

WILL POWER: It was cool, so that made the car a lot better. You know, the wind direction wasn’t quite right. We were trying to save some tires. It didn’t make sense to run very much.

THE MODERATOR: Simon, you’re coming into this weekend as the points leader. You had several activities leading up to the week. Now that you’re here, you’ve been in a racecar, what is your mentality as you are finally getting down to business?

SIMON PAGENAUD: It’s definitely the best time of the week really. It’s been for me a long week waiting.

Just excited to be here, excited to be in this fight, excited that we’re able to, with Will and our teammates, bring another championship for Team Penske in the 50th year anniversary of the team. I think it’s very important to Roger and the entire organization. It feels great.

Now it’s about racing. Was hoping we could race last weekend, but didn’t happen, so…

Yeah, like Will, for us, we’re just saving tires, waiting for the conditions to be more similar to what’s going to happen over the weekend. We know the temperatures are going to rise.

It’s so fast with these cars these days with the aero kit, that the temperature makes such a big difference. Also, as we know, it’s a very abrasive tarmac here, so the tires get really used up. When it gets hot, it’s even more the case. It will change as the day goes on. It may be more interesting to run this afternoon.

THE MODERATOR: You mentioned it’s nice to be competing with your teammate because you know, regardless of what happens, Team Penske is going to get the championship. There has to be a bit of an awkward sense to it. Do you sense that at all?

SIMON PAGENAUD: No, I don’t feel awkward. I want to be the one winning for sure, and Will does, too. It’s great for Team Penske to win, but I do want to get this title.

We’ve had a great season. I think first and foremost, even before this weekend starts, it’s just how great the season has been on the 22 car, the evolution compared to last year. The transition is done compared to being with Schmidt before.

Couldn’t be happier to be where we’re at right now. Like I said, I’m going to embrace the weekend and enjoy it.

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Will and Simon.

Q. Will, you’ve battled for the title with Dario a couple times, Scott, Ryan Hunter-Reay. Now you’re battling your teammate. Is it easier to have to challenge someone within your team? Do you feel less pressure than fighting a team on the outside?
WILL POWER: I think what it does, it takes out the fact that you can have a teammate help you when you’re competing against someone else. I guess at the end of the day we’re just both racing hard to get the championship. Everyone else is out of the equation, too, so that makes it different, as well. We need to get this championship for the team. We know we’ve got it now, it’s between Simon and I.

Yeah, a little different. I guess last year, I was definitely further away last year when I had a shot at it. But we have a realistic shot this weekend. Everything’s got to fall into place. But, yeah, they’re all different.

Q. Simon, how concerning is it that this is the last race of the season, guys are fighting for jobs? How do you manage that in the race?
SIMON PAGENAUD: I mean, I’m in a different position to Will. Will needs to win the race to have a legit chance really. We don’t have a big issue.

But I think you just race like you usually do. Everybody is going to race like you usually do. Why changing right now? There’s no reason to do that.

But you do need to know where you’re running around, that’s for sure. We’ll see. Obviously, yeah, there will be aggressive guys out there, like every year. The fact that it’s double points gets everybody pretty excited – sometimes too much. We’re going to have to be heads-up.

Q. Simon, how much information do you want to get in your ears during the race of where Will is?
SIMON PAGENAUD: It’s important, for sure. In the meantime, like I said, it’s about going racing. It’s about not worrying too much about points. That’s how you can lose it, just by worrying too much where he is, where I am, what’s going on.

At the end of the day it’s about doing the best you can. And doing the best you can with a Penske car, you should be running up front. That’s really what I’m going to focus on.

Q. Cindric said it was business as usual. Can either one of you give me an example of how it hasn’t been business as usual this week, but just between you two? Has it been business as usual or maybe you didn’t talk once or twice where you would have normally?
WILL POWER: Yeah, had a bit of a punch-out yesterday, but apart from that it has been business as normal.

No, seriously, it’s been business absolutely as normal. It really has. It’s pretty funny how relaxed it is. I think we’re both experienced enough to realize that at the end of the day it’s going to be what it’s going to be out on the track. Doing anything out of the car isn’t going to make a difference, apart from working with your engineer.

Yeah, I mean, it’s just a normal weekend for me. It really feels that way.

Q. Will, I asked Simon yesterday, so… When you two were teammates in ’06 coming up in Champ Car, did you envision that a weekend like this would ultimately happen?
WILL POWER: Yeah, I would say when we were teammates in 2007 that would be the case actually, yeah. We’re both pretty competitive. Yeah, I would have expected this probably sooner, honestly. But obviously we went different paths for a while there and kind of ended up back here. But yes.

Q. What was Simon like back then?
WILL POWER: Well, it was a pretty intense relationship at that point. We were actually good friends off the track. But it was intense in the engineering office, the young guy trying to make it (laughter).

But, yeah, it’s definitely mellowed quite a bit.

Q. Will, how different is your mindset already having a championship in play, whereas the previous years you’ve been in championship contention, you were coming down to the last race?
WILL POWER: Yeah, I think at this point if I hadn’t won one, I probably would have just been like, I’m not going to win one.

I said that in ’14 actually. I went into ’14, I’m not going to win a championship, so who cares. I just went and raced, and I won one. That’s actually how I approached the beginning of that season, then it started coming together. Okay, I get it. Racing gods just want to play with you a little.

Q. How much less pressure is there because Roger has a title? You don’t all have to worry about that.
WILL POWER: I think it’s a good situation, a great situation. After what happened last year, just no way we could let that happen again. It was just such a pity, that we allowed Ganassi to get that title.

Yeah, it was unfortunate how it happened. But it didn’t need to happen. We were very determined to make sure it didn’t happen this year. It’s a relief that we can just go and race.

Q. Would he crowd surf?
WILL POWER: I don’t think I’d see Roger do that, definitely no. Maybe if we were at a deficit to Dixon, we won by a draw, maybe Roger would have gone out there. Maybe Cindric might have gone crowd surfing. But he’s pretty cool about this one.

THE MODERATOR: Gentlemen, thank you very much. Good luck this weekend.

Wayne Taylor Racing’s Ricky Taylor captured his first pole position of the season Friday at Circuit of the Americas ahead of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s Lone Star Le Mans race.

Wayne Taylor Racing’s Ricky Taylor captured his first pole position of the season Friday at Circuit of the Americas ahead of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s Lone Star Le Mans race.

Taylor, in Wayne Taylor Racing’s No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette Daytona Prototype, set a lap of 1:58.712 in the car he shares with his brother, Jordan. It is the third pole of the year for the Corvette DP this season.

RICKY TAYLOR, WAYNE TAYLOR RACING NO. 10 KONICA MINOLTA CORVETTE DP – PROTOTYPE POLE-WINNER: “Yeah, I wish we could have had some more (pole positions) this year. The guys definitely gave me a great car all season. I’m sick of those Mazdas on pole, so it’s nice to get one for the Corvette. It wasn’t a perfect lap. The track was very different from the other sessions. You gained a little bit in one place, lose a little in another. I’m not sure if it was the same for everybody, but just really excited we got a bunch of Konica Minolta and DLL people here this weekend, so I’m glad to do it for them. Hopefully, we can do the same thing tomorrow.”

(On qualifying later in the day in the FIA WEC race): “Yeah, I’m about to try to run over to the Larbre Corvette, so I can’t get enough Corvette’s today. Hopefully we can do the same thing over there.”

(Track conditions) “The track is very slippery in the heat. It changes a lot. It hasn’t been like this at all this week, so it was all about adapting to the track. You can overdrive some places and under drive others trying to put together a lap. Hopefully we have a good read on tomorrow and we’ll be on full attack. The heat is always a big factor here. These race cars are very hot inside. Physically as well as performance-wise with the race car, it’s hard on everything – tires, fuel, engine, everything. Hopefully it’s a good representation of what we will see tomorrow with the pace. It will be all about conserving tires and making sure you’re in the hunt at the end.
“The Continental tires were really good. This is as close as we’re going to get to tomorrow, in terms of the conditions. Hopefully this is a good read on how we will stack up. It will be a tough race on tire wear and getting through the race cleanly.”
