Jeg Coughlin Jr. coming to life as NHRA tour heads to middle stretch of regular season

Jeg Coughlin Jr. coming to life as NHRA tour
heads to middle stretch of regular season
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 16) — Six-time world champion drag racer Jeg Coughlin Jr. knows his JEGS.com/Elite Performance Chevrolet Camaro has been running well all year. He also knows it’s been getting even better over the last few national events, which has him thrilled to be heading to Heartland Park Topeka for this weekend’s 29th annual Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals presented by Minties.

Jeg Coughlin Jr.
“We’re really excited about the first seven races and are very much looking forward to this middle stretch of the 18-race regular season to climb further up the rankings,” Coughlin said. “The entire Elite Motorsports race team has picked up a bunch of momentum the last few races with our team logging a runner-up finish in Houston, a couple of No. 1 qualifying efforts in Houston and Charlotte, and my teammate Erica Enders getting to the finals last race in Atlanta.

“The points are adding up and we all know these middle races count just as much as the ones nearer the end of the regular season when everyone is jockeying for playoff spots. It’s important to maintain our focus and continue working hard.”

Coughlin, a five-time Pro Stock world champion who also won the 1992 Super Gas title, is right in the thick of a very crowded Mello Yello Pro Stock point standings. He currently ranks fifth, one point behind fourth-place Tanner Gray, one round behind third-place Jason Line, and just 91 points off Greg Anderson’s class lead.

Topeka should be a great place for Coughlin to make an upward move as he’s claimed three national event victories at Heartland Park, two in Pro Stock in 2000 and 2013 and once in Super Stock in 1994.

“Topeka’s a track that is usually very good,” Coughlin said. “Having had success in both the pro and sportsman ranks there in the past certainly gives me a dose of confidence.

“Looking at the forecast we may need to prepare for lots of weather changes, which can be a real test for the crew chiefs, but our gang of Mark Ingersoll, Rick Jones and Brian Self work really well together, as witnessed by the success we’ve been enjoying.”

When not racing himself, Coughlin will be supporting his brother Troy, who races in Pro Mod, and his nephew Troy Jr., who competes in Top Fuel.

Prior to the race, Coughlin will be taking in the NCAA regional golf tournament at Stanford University in the San Francisco area, where his son Jeg III is competing along with his teammates from The Ohio State University.

“We’re always pulling for Troy Jr. every weekend and it’s been fun to have him out on the pro tour full time,” Coughlin said. “Pro Mod added Topeka to its schedule this year so we’ll have brother Troy along with us this time, which will be fun.

“I’m super proud of my son and his teammates. This is the best the OSU team has done in a while so to reach regionals and have a chance to advance to the finals is very exciting for all of them. I’ll be there this week to show my support and then I’ll hustle over to Topeka for the races. It’s time for an Elite win.”

Pro Stock qualifying sessions are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., Friday, and 1:30 and 4:30 p.m., Saturday, with eliminations starting at 12 p.m., Sunday. Television coverage on FOX Sports 1 begins at 10 p.m., Friday, followed by a live qualifying show at 2 p.m., Saturday. Elimination action also will be shown live starting at 1 p.m., Sunday. (All times are local and subject to change).

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 15) — Fresh off a season-best runner-up finish at the last NHRA tour stop in Atlanta, two-time Pro Stock world champion Erica Enders is looking to go “One Step Beyond” at this weekend’s 29th annual Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals presented by Minties at Heartland
Park Topeka.

“We are going to do our best to carry the momentum we picked up in Atlanta and take it to Topeka,” Enders said. “We had a great day there in our Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro. All we need to do is get one step beyond that in Topeka and we’ll be back in the winner’s circle. We’d love for that to happen at Heartland Park.” Continue reading Atlanta runner-up Erica Enders looking to go ‘One Step Beyond’ in Topeka

Ryan Blaney and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team head into the Monster Energy All-Star weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway needing a stage win in the preliminary Monster Energy Open to earn a berth in the main event.

But as Michael Waltrip’s victory in the 1996 All-Star race proves, it is possible for an Open driver, one who hasn’t won a points-paying Cup race in the past two seasons, to win the main event.

Waltrip, driving the Wood Brothers’ No. 21 Ford, finished fifth in the Winston Open back in ’96, but went on to win the main event, then known as the Winston, becoming the first Open driver to win it all. Continue reading 21 Team Reflects on 21 Years, All-Star Race

Chevrolet drivers in the Verizon IndyCar Series shifted from turning laps on the 2.439-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course to the famous 2.5-mile oval to commence practice for the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race.

Thirty-two competitors logged 1,306 total laps to begin preparations for qualifications this weekend and the May 28 race. Team owner/driver Ed Carpenter, a two-time Indianapolis 500 pole winner, led the way for Team Chevy with a quick lap of 224.969 mph/39.7636 seconds in the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet for third in the running order. As he did in 2016, Marco Andretti led the way for Honda and his Andretti Autosport team in Opening Day practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Monday, in preparation for the May 28 101st running of the Indianapolis 500.

Scott Dixon made it a 1-2 result for Honda drivers on a warm, sunny day that saw 32 drivers take to the track during the four-hour session. Speeds rose during the final “happy hour” of practice, as more than a dozen drivers worked in the draft in preparation for race day. When the checkers flew at 6 p.m. to end practice, Honda drivers held down eight of the top 10 positions on the time sheet. Scelzi Eyeing Success at Thunderbowl This Saturday During KWS-NARC Event

Scelzi Eyeing Success at Thunderbowl This Saturday During KWS-NARC Event

Inside Line Promotions – PLACERVILLE, Calif. (May 15, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi is looking forward to his lone race this weekend at one of his favorite tracks.

Scelzi and his Roth Motorsports backed, family owned team will compete on Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., with the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Sprint Car Series.

“I love racing in Tulare,” he said. “It has always been one of my favorite tracks and I always look forward to any opportunity to compete there.” Continue reading Scelzi Eyeing Success at Thunderbowl This Saturday During KWS-NARC Event

Giovanni Scelzi Records First Career 410 Victory to Become Youngest KWS-NARC Winner

Inside Line Promotions – PLACERVILLE, Calif. (May 15, 2017) – Giovanni Scelzi became the youngest winner in King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Sprint Car Series history last Saturday when he used a last-lap pass to score his first career 410ci winged sprint car win.

Scelzi, who is 15-years-old, entered the event at Placerville Speedway with only three starts in a 410 sprint car under his belt.

“It was pretty special to get our first 410 win,” he said. “Dennis and Teresa Roth, Todd Ventura, my crew chief Brent Ventura and the rest of Roth Motorsports have given me an excellent opportunity so I was pretty excited we could get to Victory Lane so quickly.”

The action began with Scelzi setting quick time during qualifying at the quarter-mile oval. He then advanced from his fourth starting position to place third in a heat race, which locked him into the dash.

“I went into turn one and the guy on the outside in front of me got tight and into the cushion,” he said. “I had to hit the brakes to miss him and I fell to seventh. We drove back up to third to make the dash.”

The dash inversion was in Scelzi’s favor as it lined him up on the pole. He led the distance of the race to garner the pole position for the main event.

“The track was super slick and dusty,” he said. “I rolled into turn one on the bottom and ended at the exit ramp off turn two,” he said. “I fell to third. It took me a while to figure out where to drive my car. I passed Willie Croft for second about halfway. I didn’t think I had anything for (Sean) Becker. I was looking at it like we needed to finish the race and not do anything stupid

“On the last lap I was all over him. He went to the bottom in turns three and four so I went to the middle. I just went where he didn’t go. The curb was way up by the edge of the track. There was some grip way up there. He slowed down a lot and I hit the corner perfect.”

Scelzi pulled even with Becker in turns three and four before winning a drag race down the frontstretch by less than one tenth of a second. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/hcN9crKtx1U.

“It’s hard to tell at that place if you win a close one,” he said. “The straightaways are so short. You’re almost lifting at the flag stand. I drove it so far past my lifting point. They told me over the radio that I won.”

Scelzi opened last weekend on Friday at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, Calif., where he set quick time before placing third in a heat race and fifth in the dash to line up on the inside of the third row for the main event.

“We’ve been fast everywhere we’ve gone,” he said. “I think we should be in the top five every night wherever we go. Going into a race with any series helps having that confidence.

“In the feature it was one lane and hooked up. The biggest move I made was with about eight laps to go. There was a restart and I was fifth. I drove by Craig Stidham and D.J. Netto to get to third and the yellow came out to put me back in fifth. On the next restart I passed a guy and he got into us. We got some damage and we weren’t able to finish.”

Scelzi pulled in with only a handful of laps remaining. He was credited with a 13th-place finish. Here is a link to watch the feature: https://youtu.be/IvWg7BjwjRk.

He is slated to compete this Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., with the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Sprint Car Series. Scelzi enters the event ranked second in the championship standings – only three points behind the leader.

Blaney, Motorcraft/Quick Lane Team Finish Fourth After Mistake-Free Weekend At Kansas

May 14, 2017

When the Wood Brothers and their backers at Ford Motor Company decided in 2009 to take the Motorcraft/Quick Lane back to a part-time schedule and regroup, the long-term goal was to build the No. 21 team back to an outfit that was capable of turning in a performance like the team delivered in Saturday’s GoBowling.com 400 at Kansas Speedway.

A little more than a year after the team returned to full-time competition, driver Ryan Blaney, crew chief Jeremy Bullins and the entire Motorcraft/Quick Lane team had a mistake-free weekend that saw Blaney win his first pole in NASCAR’s elite series, then compete for the win all the way until the final laps.
