Mike Coughlin logs 27th career NHRA victory after big weekend in Indianapolis

Mike Coughlin logs 27th career NHRA
victory after big weekend in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (July 7) — Mike Coughlin scored his first Top Dragster victory in two years Sunday, beating five tough challengers in elimination action to take the crown of the Summer Spectacle at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. The event was the third on this year’s North Central Division schedule in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.

“I really don’t think this has sunk in yet,” Coughlin said from the winner’s circle. “I feel like I’m going to wake up tomorrow morning and have to check to make sure that little gold man (Wally trophy) is still sitting by my bed. Maybe then I’ll realize I’m not just dreaming. It seems like forever since I’ve felt this feeling.

“My crew guys, Greg Cody, Tony Collier and Dave Raurk, along with a bunch of input from Dad (Hall of Famer Jeg Coughlin Sr.), have put in so much work to figure this car out the last two months and to come out with a brand-new setup and roll through a really tough divisional race like this is just phenomenal. I couldn’t be happier.”

After struggling with a promising-at-times but ultimately unpredictable power-adder, Coughlin and crew recently switched to a Fowler F12 roots-style blower made by Columbus, Ohio-based machinist Jeff Fowler. Together with the ComSYNC EFI system the team has been using, Coughlin’s black-tipped dragster turned into a true bracket car this weekend, running perfect passes lap after lap.

“We made eight runs this weekend, including five in eliminations, and we had zero problems,” Coughlin said. “We haven’t been able to say that since we won here at this event two years ago. People think a supercharger is a supercharger but that’s not the case. The combination between the ComSYNC EFI and this Fowler blower was perfect for us. It feels like it was built specifically for what we do.

“We came here with a helluva lot of enthusiasm having just completed the best test session we’d had in a year and Ryan Micke of ComSYNC made great calls every round. The car did what it was supposed to do every time.”

This is Coughlin’s 27th NHRA victory (14 national and 13 divisional) and his third since making the switch to Top Dragster (1 national and 2 divisional). He is a two-time Division 3 champion in Top Sportsman (2007 and 2009) and has claimed wins at Indy on six different occasions (2 national and 4 divisional).

“This place is our second home next to National Trail Raceway,” he said. “We always seem to do well here, not just me but our whole family. It’s a special place for drag racers and winning at Indy is always a big deal.

“It was great having my son Clay with me all weekend and I know he kept my wife Kriss and his brother Jack updated on what we were doing every round. There’s a lot of excitement in the air and I’m super pleased to start a stretch of five races in four consecutive weekends with a victory.

“I couldn’t do any of this without Dad and my brothers John, Troy and Jeg Jr., plus all the associates back home at JEGS that are always behind us. Thanks to all of them. Now let’s go to Chicago and do it again next weekend.

Austin Dillon Leads Laps and Wins Stage 2 in the No. 3 American Ethanol Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Before Being Collected in “The Big One” At Daytona

“That was definitely one of the best race cars I’ve ever had, so whatever RCR and ECR is doing to build these speedway cars, they need to keep doing it. We were able to work with Team Chevy all day and stick to a strategy to keep the Chevrolet teams up front in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway. It felt awesome to earn the Stage 2 win and lead a lot of laps in the No. 3 American Ethanol Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. I felt like it was our race to win, but unfortunately it didn’t end up that way. We lost the lead and I really felt it was kind of urgent to get back into the lead because of the lightning and rain coming. I got turned a little bit left and then it shot me down left. It’s just part of this kind of racing. I’m disappointed in how everything went down. I hate wrecking race cars but I’m here for Richard Childress Racing. I bleed RCR and we’re trying to get them in the playoffs.”

Daniel Hemric Finishes 18th in Rain-Shortened Coke Zero Sugar 400 with No. 8 Cessna Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

“What a weekend down here in Daytona. We have to thank all of the amazing race fans who stuck it out with all of the weather we’ve had here this weekend. Our No. 8 Cessna Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was fast throughout the weekend and we had a solid plan to work with our fellow Chevrolet drivers once the race started and that seemed to work out when the green flag flew. We were just biding our time but then made contact with another car exiting pit road, which caused some damage to the right front of the car. The guys were able to fix that damage, but then we got even more damage when the No. 41 came down the track and hit us in the right side. We had significant damage from that and fell two laps down, but these guys never gave up and we kept fighting. We were able to get one lap back because of the wave around, then got the free pass to get back on the lead lap. Unfortunately, the weather came and we never got the chance to go up there and mix it up for the race win. I hate it for all of the guys on this Cessna Chevrolet, the fans here at the track and watching at home, but that’s part of racing. We’ll regroup and head to Kentucky and look to continue our momentum there.”

CORVETTE RACING IN CANADA: Setting Up for Try at CTMP Win No. 12

CORVETTE RACING IN CANADA: Setting Up for Try at CTMP Win No. 12
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Canada (July 6, 2019) – Corvette Racing will look to charge through the field Sunday following qualifying for the Mobil 1 Sports Car Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Doing so would write another remarkable chapter in Corvette Racing lore and secure a 12th class victory at the high-speed track east of Toronto.

Jan Magnussen, teaming with Antonio Garcia paced the program’s effort in qualifying with a lap of 1:14.295 (119.151 mph) in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C7.R. The time placed Magnussen seventh in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship’s GT Le Mans (GTLM) category.

Teammate Marcel Fässler wasn’t far behind at 1:14.769 (118.396 mph) in the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette. He is driving with Oliver Gavin in place of Tommy Milner, who injured his left hand in an opening-lap incident last weekend at Watkins Glen.

It’s been a challenging last month for Corvette Racing. The team’s annual trek to the 24 Hours of Le Mans ended in heartbreak with separate incidents for the two Corvettes, most notably a heavy incident for Fässler that required a new chassis for the No. 4 side of the team. It didn’t get any better at Watkins Glen when Milner was hit and the crash by and large destroying the just-rebuilt Corvette.

There is reason for optimism, however. No team in the IMSA paddock boasts more races, miles or victories at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park than Corvette Racing. Another solid result at CTMP would be a boon for the program, especially with Magnussen and Garcia only one point out of the GTLM Drivers Championship lead. They have four podium finishes in the last five races at CTMP and are on a streak of four consecutive podiums this season.

RCR Post Race Report – Circle K Firecracker 250

Tyler Reddick and the No. 2 Gimme Country Chevrolet Team Capture the Pole and Lead Laps at Daytona International Speedway

“That was a much more wild race than what we saw when we were at Daytona in February. It was great to start off the day by capturing our second-consecutive pole award this year here. That’s a huge testament to everything everyone at RCR and ECR is doing back at the shop. We had an up and down day, spinning during the middle of Stage 2 and falling a lap down to getting that lap back and contending for the win. Unfortunately on that last restart we got shuffled back in our No. 2 Gimme Country Camaro and received a bad tire rub that forced us to hit pit road with a handful of laps left. We’ll get back after it next week at Kentucky, but I just wish we had another shot at the final few laps of this one. This race literally had it all for us, just missing the win. I can’t thank Gimme Country enough for coming on board for this race and hope they enjoyed it!”

-Tyler Reddick

Joe Graf Jr. Earns Solid Qualifying Effort and Gains Valuable Experience at Daytona International Speedway in Eat Sleep Race Chevrolet

“We came here this weekend with the goal of gaining as much experience at Daytona International Speedway as possible in the No. 21 Eat Sleep Race Chevrolet. We were able to qualify sixth, which was a great start for my first Daytona International Speedway NASCAR Xfinity Series start. Early in Stage 1, we were involved in an on-track incident that caused us to have concerns about the brakes and damage to the left-front fender. We pitted a couple of times for repairs and the No. 21 Eat Sleep Race team did a great job repairing the damage and getting us back on track. We restarted the race one lap down in 35th and worked hard to put ourselves in position to earn the Lucky Dog at the end of Stage 1. The Eat Sleep Race Chevy remained really strong in the draft so we just tried to save our equipment so that we could put ourselves in a good position for the end of the race. Working with my teammate, Tyler Reddick, we were able to race to as high as fifth in the race. Unfortunately, we were one of 14 cars involved in a pileup with 13 laps to go and even though we made repairs the damage was just too great to finish the race. I’m disappointed with our finish because we had a really fast car, but it’s awesome to be able to get more experience at Daytona. I can’t thank everyone at RCR and Eat Sleep Race enough.”
