FRANK’S GOT THE SURE STEP

Heckenast wins wild Feature at I-94Sheppard extends points lead with second place finishFERGUS FALLS, MN – JULY 18, 2021 – A weakness can become a strength. Frank Heckenast Jr. proved that Saturday night at I-94 Sure Step Speedway. For the Frankfort, IL driver, that weakness was starting a race. The green flag dropped and sometimes so would he. Not Saturday, though. He finally turned that weakness into a strength by powering around the outside of Tyler Bruening on Lap 1 and holding off the field for all 40 laps to claim the $10,000 prize.“My Dad’s been on me for years about starts, I’m one of the worst people in the world at starting a race,” Heckenast said. “With [crew member] T.C. being here and taking over the setups, I’ve been focusing on my driving and starts, and I felt like the race was won at the start.“If Tyler [Bruening] got the lead on the first lap, I don’t know if I would’ve gotten around him.”Despite dominating the race, he still had to deal with an assortment of slower traffic. Heckenast further demonstrated his ability as a driver to learn and adapt with how he taught himself to handle the situation.“We ran second in a [DIRTcar Summer Nationals] race to Bobby [Pierce] and he just made all the difference in the world being aggressive in lap traffic,” Heckenast said. “[Saturday] I said every shot I get I’m going for it because it could make a difference in the race.”The win is Heckenast’s second World of Outlaws win of the season, and third of his career.Three-time and defending Series champion Brandon Sheppard finished second—his 14th podium finish of 2021.The New Berlin, IL driver was involved in a three-way dance for second place, along with Tyler Bruening and Chris Madden. He made his move with a few laps to go, throwing a slide-job on Bruening to grab the runner-up spot.“Madden snuck in there on us, and we were slicing and dicing and doing crazy stuff, and I finally got to where I could slide Bruening and then I could really go,” Sheppard said. “By the time I got to second, [Heckenast] had already drove off.”The result helped Sheppard again extend his lead in the Series standings—82 points ahead of Chris Madden, who finished fourth.Madden and Bruening waged a war for third that saw their body panels meet by the finish line with Bruening narrowly grabbing the final podium spot. After the race, Madden showed displeasure toward Bruening in the infield, stopping his car in front of him, getting out, and yelling at the Rookie driver.Bruening, of Decorah, IA, just saw the incident as hard racing.“We never touched until we came to the start-finish line,” Bruening said. “[Madden] can say whatever he wants to say. It’s bull crap. We’re coming to the checkered flag for a podium finish for a top-three, and we’re both in the fuel wide-open and we’re banging off each other and whatever for a good, solid third-place finish.“So, if he’s upset with that, I don’t know what really to say, because I thought we had a damn good race. I thought we raced each other aggressively, but respectfully and obviously he thinks differently.”We reached out to Madden after the race about the finish, but he declined to comment.Even though Bruening hoped Saturday would be his first trip to Victory Lane, he stated he’s happy with the direction his team is going.“The car’s been really good, we’re making good adjustments on it, and we’re clicking as a team good,” Bruening said. “We’re just building off of this each night.”Ryan Gustin finished fifth, his second top-five of the weekend. The Upper Midwest swing has been one to remember for Heckenast Jr., with two wins in five races. Potentially even more important, he’s continued to learn how to turn his weaknesses into strength. A good sign for him. Maybe not for his competition.UP NEXT: The Most Powerful Late Models on the Planet travel to Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, WI for the Rumble at the Red Cedar on Sunday, July 18.Morton Buildings Feature (40 Laps)-1. 99JR-Frank Heckenast [2][$10,000]; 2. 1-Brandon Sheppard [5][$6,000]; 3. 16-Tyler Bruening [1][$3,500]; 4. 44-Chris Madden [3][$2,800]; 5. 19R-Ryan Gustin [8][$2,500]; 6. 97-Cade Dillard [7][$2,300]; 7. 28M-Jimmy Mars [10][$2,200]; 8. 7-Ricky Weiss [6][$2,100]; 9. 55C-Chad Mahder [9][$2,050]; 10. 11-Pat Doar [21][$2,000]; 11. 1-2′-Bryce Sward [15][$1,600]; 12. 2-Dave Mass [13][$1,400]; 13. 45-Kyle Hammer [16][$1,200]; 14. 6M-Jeff Massingill [18][$1,100]; 15. July 17, 2021, Morrison, Colorado – Matt Hagan powered his Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye to the top of “thunder mountain” and the Funny Car timing sheets to earn the No. 1 qualifier position for Sunday’s Dodge//SRT Mile-High Nationals Presented by Pennzoil, the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Camping World Drag Racing Series event held near Denver, Colorado, at the picturesque Bandimere Speedway. Sunday’s national event at the Rocky Mountains venue will be Dodge//SRT and Mopar brands 32nd as title sponsors, the longest consecutive and active sponsorship in all of motorsports.

Hagan secured his second top-qualifier honor of the 2021 NHRA season and the 42nd of his career with his 3.966-second pass at 319.22 mph on Friday under the lights. The three-time NHRA Funny Car world champion collected a total of six bonus points by posting the quickest pass in two of three qualifying sessions with his Mopar machine. He’ll begin pursuit of the coveted Wally trophy at his sponsor’s long-time headline national event with a first round match-up against No. 14 qualifier and rookie Chris King.

Running alongside Hagan in the adjacent lane for all three sessions was DSR teammate Ron Capps who qualified his HEMI®-powered Funny Car in the top-five for an eighth consecutive event this year. He drove his Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat to the No. 4 spot on the eliminations ladder with his 3.986 second pass at 318.09 mph from Friday which earned him a bonus point for setting the third quickest run of Q1. Capps will have No. 11 seed Terry Haddock in the lane next to him for the opening round of eliminations.

Fresh off a win at the previous event, the Pedregon Racing team headed into the final qualifying session without a baseline run but gave their driver and team owner Cruz Pedregon exactly what he needed to post the third quickest run of the session and earn a bonus point. His Snap-on Tools Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat ran a solid 4.074 sec./313.29 mph to position him in ninth place overall and pair him up with No. 6 seed Paul Lee on Sunday morning.

In Top Fuel action, DSR Dodge//SRT Redeye dragster pilot Leah Pruett had her best run in Saturday night’s final qualifying session under the lights at the Rocky Mountain dragstrip with a 4.056-second elapsed time run at 249.49 mph to put her 11th on the eliminations ladder where she will start her race day battling No. 4 qualifier Doug Kalitta.

Pruett also pulled double duty for a fourth time this season by taking the wheel of her 2021 Dodge Challenger Mopar Drag Pak for the Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown (FSS) series debut this weekend at Denver. Both Pruett and her teammate Mark Pawuk had four qualifying runs to get their race cars running to their liking and successfully qualified them in the top half of the field for Sunday’s contest.

With a solid final pass, Pruett drove her 2021 Dodge Challenger Mopar Drag Pak to the fourth quickest pass in FSS qualifying with an 8.261-second elapsed time run at 167.24 mph to set up a meeting with No. 13 Waldemar Rodriguez in the opening round.

Pawuk and his Empaco Equipment Dodge Challenger had their best run in Q2 with an 8.330-second pass at 164.73 mph. They ended up eighth on the ladder and will see No. 9 seed Joseph Welch in the first round of FSS competition.

The Dodge//SRT Mile-High Nationals Presented by Pennzoil will be live streamed via NHRA.TV with FS1 providing qualifying highlights on Sunday, July 18, from 3-4 p.m. Eastern, and coverage of Sunday’s elimination rounds from 4-7 p.m. Eastern.

Qualifying 2: 4.007 sec./315.64 mph (3 bonus point for quickest of session)

Qualifying 3: 7.563 sec./ 89.45 mph (7th)

“This Mopar Dodge SRT crew really put a great car underneath me during qualifying this weekend and we’re sitting No. 1 going into race day. Dickie (Venables) and Mike (Knudsen) and Alex (Conaway) are doing a great job and mesh so well together. It’s a great feeling to be No. 1 for your sponsor with Dodge and SRT and Mopar at their event driving the Dodge flagship car. I hope it puts a smile on their faces. We’re always pushing and learning and I’m excited about tomorrow. I’ve never won here on Thunder Mountain and we want to check this one off the box and keep moving forward and up in the points chase. I’m very confident in Dickie and this team on race day.”

“We’ve got to go rounds. There’s no doubt about it. We’ll take that No. 1 qualifier now and take that momentum into race day tomorrow. This Hellcat is running strong, man. It was running so strong that on that last run the rear was trying to pass the front end. We were just trying to go after it a little bit too hard but we didn’t have anything to lose. It was one of those things where (Crew Chief) Dickie Venables crawled into the box and does what he does. He tunes it up. I know he’s going to do that tomorrow and I cannot wait to put on a show here for all these fans here in Denver. It’s going to be awesome.”

Ron Capps, DSR NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

(No. 3 Qualifier – 3.986 seconds at 318.09 mph)

Qualifying 1: 3.986 sec./318.09 mph (1 bonus point for third quickest of session)

Qualifying 2: 4.050 sec./314.39 mph (5th)

Qualifying 3: 7.300 sec./92.53 (6th)

“This race is unique because of the two-night qualifying runs on Friday and Saturday night. It’s a whole new game on race day. It’s going to be different conditions, temperatures and this is when we rely on the NAPA Know How that I always talk about with our crew chiefs, Guido (Dean Antonelli) and John Medlen, for Pennzoil and NAPA. It’s going to be a lot of fun to wake up, come here in the sun and race in front of these great fans. The grandstands have been absolutely packed. These Dodge//SRT Mile-High fans are crazy and we love that and I’m aiming to get back in the winner’s circle here at Denver.”

Cruz Pedregon, Pedregon Racing Snap-on® Tools Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

(No. 9 Qualifier – 4.074 seconds at 313.29 mph)

Qualifying 1:  7.657 sec./82.65 mph (10th)

Qualifying 2: 8.695 sec./81.36 mph (12th)

Qualifying 3: 4.074 sec./313.29 mph (1 bonus point for third quickest of session)

“I was third quickest in the last session and I was really looking for a three-second run this weekend but it seems like if you get behind here it’s really tricky up here on the mountain. If you miss (getting a good run in) early, it’s kind of tough to come back to that, but I’m sure (Crew Chief) John Collins and the guys will get it tuned. The thing you got to think about is we don’t race at night and we’ll come out here tomorrow at 11:30 am when it’ll be sunshine and bright, and completely different set-up. That was a good run to get us in the field solidly and the Snap-on Dodge will be ready for tomorrow.”

TOP FUEL:

Leah Pruett, DSR Pennzoil Mopar Dodge//SRT Dragster

(No. 11 Qualifier – 4.056 seconds at 249.49 mph)

Qualifying 1: No Time

Qualifying 2: 4.150 sec./234.45 mph (7th)

Qualifying 3: 4.056 sec./249.49 mph (10th)

“We had mile-high expectations for this Dodge//SRT team this weekend coming into Denver. Friday was the time to lay it down and what’s been happening with our cars is a number of odd problems that we have been fixing along the way. We had a bolt breakage on Friday night so we did not get to have the one very important baseline run on the mountain. That put us behind and we put a couple of solid runs down today, but we’re a little behind with our fueling with dropped cylinders. We want to be on top of the mountain tomorrow. We’ve been there before here. We have tough competition in the first round with (Doug) Kalitta. For us, just going one round at a time is super important. I feel like the amazing fan energy and our Mopar muscle is going to take us to where we want to be tomorrow and that’s holding the bronze ‘Wally’ trophy.”

FACTORY STOCK SHOOTOUT:

Leah Pruett, 2021 Dodge Challenger Mopar Drag Pak

(No. 4 Qualifier – 8.261 seconds at 167.24 mph)

Qualifying 1: 8.991 sec. / 154.21 mph

Qualifying 2: 11.831 sec./ 78.16 mph

Qualifying 3: 8.417 sec. /165.80 mph

Qualifying 4:  8.261 sec./167.24 (4th)

“We’ve really been working hard the past few weeks with setups and testing these two Drag Pak Challengers with setups and between Mark’s car and mine we’ve been working with some different parts and we’re still figuring out the configuration with this new 2021 Drag Pak with the shocks and suspension and transitions and transfer. So far, it seems like the tune-up is working and that’s kudos to the work the team did with testing. I’ve never been so happy with an 8.26 and that puts us fourth in the field against some stout heavy hitters. This is what we expect of this Mopar team, to dig deep and find some gold here on the mountain.”

Mark Pawuk, Empaco Equipment Mopar Drag Pak

(No. 8 Qualifier – 8.330 seconds at 164.73 mph)

Qualifying 1: 8.381 sec. / 164.75 mph (3rd)

Qualifying 2: 8.330 sec. / 164.73 mph

Qualifying 3: 8.348 sec. / 164.77 mph

Qualifying 4: 11.398 sec./104.26 mph

“As tough as it is to race here because of the high altitude, the Bandimere family does a fabulous job with this facility. It reminds me a lot of Norwalk, Ohio, with a family-run operation. We saw a huge crowd last night and tonight, and I’m very happy and thankful for the fans. We tested here last week prior to this race and made three good runs in qualifying and really went for it tonight, but it overpowered the track and spun the tires and that knocked me down three spots. We’re still in the top half of the field and looking to have a good, long day on Sunday at the Dodge//SRT Mile-High Nationals.”

CORVETTE RACING AT LIME ROCK: Taylor, Garcia Take Overall Victory

No. 3 Corvette wins over No. 4 C8.R in weather-shortened, GT-only race
LAKEVILLE, Conn. (July 17, 2021) – Corvette Racing’s Jordan Taylor and Antonio Garcia won a weather-shortened Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park on Saturday, their third straight victory in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Taylor and Garcia had the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R ahead when the race was stopped with 70 minutes left due to lightning in the immediate area of the track. Race officials called the race with 25 minutes left in the two-hour, 40-minute GT-only contest.
The mid-engine Corvette C8.R won its Lime Rock debut, and Corvette Racing won at the circuit for the sixth time. It also marked the first overall Lime Rock victory for Corvette Racing.
Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy placed second in the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette C8.R, their second straight runner-up finish. Saturday’s results increased the lead for Garcia and Taylor in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) Drivers Championship and Chevrolet’s advantage in the Manufacturers standings.
Taylor began from pole position and Milner third following a precautionary engine change overnight. Milner moved the No. 4 up to second behind Taylor at the start, and the two Corvettes ran 1-2 throughout the race. Both cars made their first stops a lap apart just past the 30-minute mark for fuel and tires. By that point, both Taylor and Milner were mired in slower GTD traffic and on a three-stop strategy.
Milner, who suffered damage in his second stint after contact from a slower car, was the first Corvette driver to make his second stop and handed off to Tandy with 80 minutes remaining. Taylor did the same a lap later with a swap to Garcia as both Corvettes took fuel and fresh Michelin tires.
Five minutes later, race officials called for a full-course caution to monitor the approaching weather and stopped the race a lap later.
Corvette Racing’s next event is the IMSA SportsCar Weekend on Aug. 6-8 from Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. Same-day coverage on NBCSN starts at 8 p.m. ET with live streaming coverage on TrackPass and NBC Sports Gold at 2:35 p.m. ET. Live audio coverage from IMSA Radio will be available on IMSA.com.
ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – RACE-WINNER: “For sure, Jordan did an amazing job. He drove the first two stints and it was the plan for me to be in for the other two. We knew this could happen. In a way, I’m happy that he drove so well and managed to keep the 4 car at a distance the whole time and control it so I could have a really quick driver change. That helped us extend our lead. But you never know. It would have tight; I don’t know if it would have been raining or not at the end so it would have been hard to keep the lead. I’m really pleased for another Corvette 1-2. Looking at how Jordan and Tommy (Milner) drove, it seemed like very hard work with tire degradation, especially. I will definitely take it. It’s my first win at Lime Rock so I’m happy with this.”HAVE YOU HAD A RACE TO END LIKE THIS? “No, I don’t think so. But it is what it is. We had a ton of fans out here today and safety comes first. This time we were lucky in that we were leading when the red flag came. For sure, you need to be up there in that position to benefit from the conditions.”
JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – RACE-WINNER: “It was odd. We kind of knew what was going to happen going into it. We knew it was going to be a race of tire degradation and strategy, whether it be a two-stop or three-stop race just looking at the history of the race. Twenty laps in, we knew it was going to be a three-stop race doing 45-lap stints. It was about fuel mileage, saving tires and getting through traffic cleanly. Thankfully we executed well and the driver change went well. We knew the weather was imminent at some point and that it could be red-flagged, so we knew track position was going to be important. Thankfully we were out front when that came.”HAVE YOU HAD A RACE TO END LIKE THIS? “The 2019 Rolex 24, we won when it was red-flagged for too much rain. It was a similar feeling sitting in the pitlane with an hour to go and maybe no more pit stops. You’re waiting to see if it’s going to go green again, so it’s kind of very stressful with the unknown. Today looking at the radar, a couple of miles north of the track there were a crazy amount of lightning strikes so I think it was going to come this way no matter what. It wasn’t as rainy as Daytona that year, but today was a similar feeling.”TOMMY SAID HE HAD A LACK OF REAR GRIP EARLY. WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO CARS IN THE OPENING? “I don’t know if it was a big advantage. If it was anything, I think it was getting fortunate in traffic. You could gain or lose a second-and-a-half depending on where you got traffic. Some laps I could see myself gaining in traffic and on another lap I’d lose two seconds and he’d be right there again. I think the ebb and flow of that would show the gaps. I don’t know if the lap-time delta was going to be that big on a clear track. We were saving tires right from the get-go. The tire degradation was a lot bigger than I expected. To do a two-stop race was going to be almost impossible. Even doing a three-stopper with 45-lap stints… once you got to 35 laps there was a steep drop-off. Maybe they suffered a little bit more than we did with that. We started with a setup knowing the car was going in that direction and using tools like the traction control and everything we had in the car to save tires early on and hopefully benefit later in the stint.”
TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – FINISHED SECONDYOUR TEAM TOLD YOU AT ONE POINT THAT YOU WERE MAYBE GOING TO LEAPFROG THE NO. 3 UNDER THE PIT STOP WHEN YOU CHANGED DRIVERS.“It was looking pretty good there because they short-filled on their first stop to make it out in front of some of the traffic, so they are always watching that kind of stuff. I was probably about 2.5 seconds back of the No. 3 car until I got to the No. 96 car and he ran me off the road and damaged the car. The car was a handful after that. Had I been able to stay with the No. 3 car then we would have had a fuel advantage and we would have probably been able to beat them out. It’s just unfortunate, the contact there. The team is not lying to me and that’s good. It is probably better in most cases to not tell a driver everything, but something like that is definitely encouraging. It’s just a bummer. We were looking pretty good there with their strategy call. It was going to help us in the end, but in the end it didn’t play out that way.”
NICK TANDY, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/Sirius XM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – FINISHED SECONDIT WAS A CHALLENGING WEEKEND WITH HOW THIS RACE FINISHED.“Yeah, it was a challenging weekend. We obviously had a few technical issues and we set ourselves a way to go about the race and try and make the best two hours and 40 minutes, and unfortunately, we didn’t get to stretch it out. But yeah, another Corvette 1-2 so it’s good points for the Manufacturers Championship and this is obviously the main goal.”

SHINE OF A KING

Tyler ‘Sunshine’ Courtney claims 38th Kings Royal in first appearanceThe Clauson Marshall Racing driver claimed his first Kings Royal, World of Outlaws victoryROSSBURG, OH – July 17, 2021 – The crown’s gems gleamed from the sun. Not from the giant star in the sky above. From the emotional rising star it rested upon.Perched on his thrown with a $175,000 check, “Sunshine” Tyler Courtney dawned the crown and cloak worthy only to a Kings Royal champion – the 38th Kings Royal champion to be specific. His eyes were wide. His smile, never bigger. His dream had come true.“I don’t even know how to describe it really,” Courtney sputtered out while searching for a word. “Excitement… Excitement is probably the best. I saw everyone stand up and that’s something you dream about as a kid. I’ve watched a lot of these races as a kid. Seen all the crowds go crazy when people like this win. You never think in your dreams it is going to be you. Not very often does it actually happen.“It really sank in once we cleared the scales and went back through the pit gate there and the crowd cheered again… that really got me. That got my tears flowing again. I had to soak them back in when I got on top of that win.”The win at Eldora Speedway was not only his first Kings Royal victory, and his first World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win, it was his first-ever appearance at the Kings Royal. It was also his 10th win overall at the “Big E.”To Courtney, nothing in his career compares to being king.“This is by far the biggest win in my career,” he said with a smile only the thought of $175,000 can produce. “I don’t think I’ve even won over $12,000 before, let alone a crown jewel even like this.”The 38th Kings Royal was set to take place on Thursday evening, and while Qualifying and one Heat Race was completed, rain forced the remainder of the program to Saturday afternoon – giving one driver the opportunity to potentially win two Kings Royals in one day and an incredible payday of $350,000.Courtney set the stage early for his future glory with a fifth-place qualifying effort. He then won the fifth Heat Race on Saturday, giving him the outside pole for the start of the Feature. When the green unfolded in the humid air to commence the historic day, Courtney powered his NOS Energy Drink #7BC around the outside of polesitter Justin Peck to take the lead on the opening lap. Behind him, 36th Kings Royal winner Brad Sweet made quick work of David Gravel and Peck to take second down the backstretch. A red flag in that first lap hindered both of their strong starts, though. However, even with them having to return to their original starting positions due to a complete restart, Courtney and Sweet put their moves on replay by claiming first and second, again, in the same fashion as before.Sweet, eager to sit on the throne for the third time in his career, slid Courtney for the lead on Lap 2 and pulled away. Daryn Pittman was also on a charge behind them, making his way from sixth to third. The top-three acted like an accordion for the first 20 laps. Courtney closed on Sweet when they hit lap traffic, but then would fade when he neared his bumper. Pittman struggled with the same results when trying to run down Courtney. In that time, rubber started to lay down on the track. With 21 laps to go, a caution flew for Lachlan McHugh slowing on track with a flat right rear tire. As the field made laps, word came over the radio that Sweet had a cut right rear tire. The NAPA Auto Parts #49 charged into the pit area for his team to put a new right rear tire on his machine. Sweet’s chance at another Kings Royal victory deflated at that moment. He had to settle for a ninth-place result. His misfortune handed Courtney the chance of a lifetime. The chance at a dream. He led the field to the green on the restart with Gravel in second. Danny Dietrich, who was on a charge to the front before the halfway caution, stole third from Pittman that lap.Running the high side of the half-mile track, the top-three continued the accordion dance. Gravel closed on Courtney and then fell. Dietrich closed on Gravel, even close enough to try and make a pass, but never enough and fell. With only two laps standing between one driver and a $175,000 payday, Gravel made a charge to the outside of Courtney in Turn 3 but couldn’t slide his way by. His move gave Courtney an unneeded scare, though.“I had no idea,” Courtney said about how close Gravel got. “I knew he got to the outside of him in Turn 3 and knew I needed to pick it up a little bit. But I was still running pretty slow, just to make it (not blow a tire). I hadn’t gotten any tire shake, so I knew it was in good shape, well better shape than I thought, and had enough to finish the race.”He brought the crowd to their feet as he eased his throttle down the front stretch for the final time with the checkered flag waving.Gravel crossed the line second but was light at the scales and disqualified – ending the day 24th. His disqualification moved Pittman to second and Dietrich to third.“It’s a great finish for us,” said Pittman, who made his fourth World of Outlaws appearance of 2021 in the Swindell Speedlab #39. “Kevin (Swindell) has done a great job. Our whole crew has been working hard. We haven’t raced a lot, but to come out of here with a third place, obviously, a crown jewel in the sport is nothing to hang our heads over. We’ll just go and try to tweak on it a little bit more.”For Dietrich, he said he needed Gravel and Courtney to take each other out to win… with a chuckle after.“It was so hard to pass,” Dietrich said. “I think you saw where I tried to pull the trigger on David but as soon as you moved down it seemed like you just slid through the rubber and killed your exit speed. I don’t know if I could’ve done anything with them. I pulled the wing back hoping they would get to racing each other really hard and push each other out of the rubber and take advantage of it. But it never got to that point.”Sitting in the media center with his crown at his side, Courtney was physically there but his mind was elsewhere. He wore his smile. He spoke his words. But he was clearly living in his dream.“This is insane,” Courtney exclaimed.UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars return to Eldora Speedway at 7 p.m. today, starting with Hot Laps, for the 37th Kings Royal. Weather Issues Truncate Acura Effort at Lime Rock Park

Lightning, impending weather halt Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park
Mario Farnbacher and Jeff Kingsley lead Acura results with ninth-place finish

LIME ROCK, CT. (July 17, 2021) – Lightning and threatening weather conditions forced IMSA race officials to call today’s Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park with just under 30 minutes to go in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT class-only contest.

The red flag waved with one hour, 10 minutes remaining in the two hour, 40-minute contest, just as GTD category teams were nearing their final scheduled pit stops. Multiple lightning strikes in the Lime Rock area continued under the red flag, as the race clock continued to run and approaching thunderstorms then led officials to call the race.

Mario Farnbacher and Jeff Kingsley led the way for Acura in their Compass Racing NSX GT3 Evo, making up one position just after the first round of pit stops to end the day 9th in GTD.

IMSA Northeast Grand Prix Acura GTD Race Results
9th GTD – #76 Jeff Kingsley, Mario Farnbacher, Compass Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo
11th GTD – #66 Till Bechtolsheimer, Marc Miller, Gradient Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo
13th GTD – #44 John Potter, Andy Lally, Magnus Racing with Archangel Acura NSX GT3 Evo

Quotes
Mario Farnbacher (#76 Compass Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo) Started 10th, finished 9th: “I’m just disappointed, for myself, for the team and for the fans. We had a huge crowd here this weekend, but the weather prevented us from putting on a proper race for them. I was actually hoping for some rain, as I think we have a very good wet weather car and would have made up a bunch of positions. I understand that the safety of the fans and race workers comes first, but it’s just an unfortunate result for everyone.”

Marc Miller (#66 Gradient Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo) Started 9th, finished 11th: “I think we had a fast car. We just didn’t get the track position we needed. If the race had resumed, I think we would’ve been in a really good position, as we needed just a splash [of fuel] at our final stop to get us to the end. I think we could’ve made up a lot of position in the final round of [pit] stops. We were hoping to make it a good show at the end of the race, but didn’t get the opportunity.”

Fast Fact
Saturday’s two-hour, 40-minute Northeast Grand Prix was the first of two IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship stand-alone events for the production-based GTLM and GTD classes. The second GT-only race will take place at Virginia International Raceway in October.

RCR Post Race Report – Loudon 200

Myatt Snider and the No. 2 Crosley Furniture Team Record Solid Seventh-Place Finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway
7th16th12th
“After completing my first race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, this place is exactly what I thought it would be. It’s a giant Martinsville Speedway with lots of room, which played well with my skill set as a short track driver. Our Richard Childress Racing team brought a good car to the track today and we did well throughout the entire 200 laps as a team. We battled a tight handling condition for the first two stages, and it hindered me from being able to roll through the center of the corner. Andy Street (crew chief) kept working on it and by the second half of the race, we got the car turning much better. If we would have had another restart, we could have competed for the win in our Crosley Furniture Chevrolet. I’m very proud of everyone on this No. 2 team and we will regroup during the Olympic break before heading back to another road course.”

CORVETTE RACING AT LIME ROCK: Taylor, Garcia Win

LAKEVILLE, Conn. (July 17, 2021) – Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor won a weather-shortened Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park on Saturday for Corvette Racing, the fourth win of the season and third in a row for the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R.
ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – GTLM RACE WINNER:YOU ARE ON AN INCREDIBLE STREAK.“Yes, last year was an amazing season and this year for sure, the C8.R is working really good. We didn’t know what the race would be like, and I ended up doing only like 10 laps, if that. Still, Jordan did an amazing two stints there and drove really, really good. Tire degradation was very bad, but he drove really good. I’m very pleased with that.”
JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – GTLM RACE-WINNER:YOU HAD A GREAT TWO STINTS THERE HOLDING OFF YOUR TEAMMATES AND BUILDING A LEAD. IS IT JUST CLICKING BETWEEN YOU AND THIS CAR RIGHT NOW IN EVERY WAY?“I think just the No. 3 car in general is clicking very well, obviously. We’ve had four out of five wins this season but just as easily we could have lost all those wins. I think everyone is executing on every level. On track, Antonio and I and the guys on the team are doing a great job on the pit stops and strategy. They’re doing a great job. So, another Corvette Racing 1-2 and Antonio’s first win here at Lime Rock. We’ve got five or six more to go here this year, so hopefully we can keep the trend going.”

TWO OUT OF THREE AIN’T BAD

Erb scores third win of the season at River CitiesIt’s the Carpentersville, IL driver’s ninth career World of Outlaws VictoryGRAND FORKS, ND – JULY 17, 2021 – Dennis Erb Jr. is no stranger to Victory Lane with the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Models. But how he won Friday’s Feature at River Cities Speedway was unexpected. The Carpentersville, IL driver didn’t use his preferred inside lane, instead of going to the top en route to his third Series win of 2021.  Erb made decided to stay there because of how well his Rocket Chassis was running. “I wanted to go back down but it felt pretty good up [top] and I wanted to keep my momentum up and I really didn’t want to break anything there,” Erb said. “I would’ve rather gotten down to the bottom, but it was working too good up top.”For a few laps, it seemed the outside wasn’t the place to be. Jimmy Mars nosed ahead of Erb a couple of times on the bottom hoping to steal the win away. But as both drivers inched toward the back of the field, traffic played into Erb’s favor. Most of the cars were on the bottom, giving him a clear lane on the outside. Erb’s anticipation of traffic in front of him played a role in collecting the $10,000 prize.  “I was trying to watch the cars ahead of me as we were coming up on them because I wanted to keep my speed up and not really back out of it,” Erb said. The win is Erb’s ninth career World of Outlaws triumph, moving him to 18th on the all-time wins list. He breaks a tie with Mike Marlar and Mars, who finished second. While slower traffic gave Erb an advantage, it didn’t help the Menomonie, WI driver. Mars had to break his momentum a few times fighting for the win.  “We just kind of got caught up with lap cars and that’s kind of the way it goes,” Mars said. “We got a second out of it, so we’ll take it and move on to the next one.” Even though he wasn’t victorious, “The Iceman” was still smiling about his podium finish when the race was over. “[The World of Outlaws] drivers are all top-notch,” Mars said. “To be able to come in every once in a while, and just be pretty competitive says a lot for our team. I’m pretty happy with that overall.”Ryan Gustin, the top Rookie of the race finished third. The Marshalltown, IA felt his car was a little off, which kept him from catching the top two.  “I felt like we were coming on there a bit at the end, we were just a little bit right rear free,” Gustin said. “If we could do it all again, I think we would’ve had a shot at winning it.” “The Reaper” closed the gap in the chase for Rookie of the Year. He’s now 102 points behind Tyler Bruening, who finished 12th. Cade Dillard finished fourth, and three-time and defending champion Brandon Sheppard rounded out the top five. The New Berlin, IL driver increased his lead in the standings—78 points ahead of Chris Madden, who finished 10th.   The wave of momentum Dennis Erb Jr. is riding doesn’t look like it’s stopping anytime soon. If he can keep it going, Friday likely won’t be his last trip to Victory Lane in 2021.   UP NEXT: The Most Powerful Late Models on the Planet travel to I-94 Sure Step Speedway in Fergus Falls, MN on Saturday, July 17. Morton Buildings Feature (40 Laps)-1. 28-Dennis Erb [1][$10,000]; 2. 28M-Jimmy Mars [2][$6,000]; 3. 19R-Ryan Gustin [4][$3,500]; 4. 97-Cade Dillard [3][$2,800]; 5. 1-Brandon Sheppard [7][$2,500]; 6. 99JR-Frank Heckenast [11][$2,300]; 7. 12-Brad Seng [5][$2,200]; 8. 7P-Joey Pederson [6][$2,100]; 9. 7-Ricky Weiss [8][$2,050]; 10. 44-Chris Madden [15][$2,000]; 11. 44S-Cole Schill [9][$1,600]; 12. 16-Tyler Bruening [17][$1,400]; 13. 55C-Chad Mahder [10][$1,200]; 14. 99B-Boom Briggs [14][$1,100]; 15. • Reigning Funny Car World Champion Matt Hagan charged to provisional No.1 qualifier position in a quest for his first win of the season and a coveted first Wally trophy at the Dodge//SRT Mile-High Nationals aboard his Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Funny Car

  • Pruett and teammate Mark Pawuk took their Dodge Challenger Mopar Drag Pak vehicles for two runs in Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown (FSS) Friday qualifying as the eight race series makes its Denver debut

July 16, 2021, Morrison, Colorado – Dodge//SRT and Mopar entries kicked off the 41stedition of the Dodge//SRT Mile-High Nationals Presented by Pennzoil, the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Camping World Drag Racing Series event held near Denver, Colorado, with Friday night qualifying runs under the lights at Bandimere Speedway.

Reigning Funny Car World Champion Matt Hagan charged to provisional No.1 qualifier position aboard his Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Funny Car in his quest to earn his first national event win of the 2021 NHRA season and a coveted Wally trophy at the Dodge//SRT Mile-High Nationals. Hagan powered his Mopar to the top spot with a 3.966-second elapsed time run at 319.22 mph at the picturesque drag strip known as Thunder Mountain set 5,800 feet above sea-level. While a win at his sponsor’s title event has eluded him in 12 previous attempts, Hagan best performances on the all-concrete track include No. 1 qualifier position in 2010 and a runner-up finish in 2011.

Running alongside Hagan in the adjacent lane was DSR teammate Ron Capps who powered his Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat to the provisional No.3 spot with 3.986 second pass at 318.09 mph. Capps previously took home No.1 qualifier honors and a Wally trophy from Bandimere in 2009 along with three runner-up finishes (1998, 2007, 2018) in 23 attempts. Capps has qualified in the top-five at every event so far this year aboard his HEMI®-powered Hellcat.

While fellow Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat driver Cruz Pedregon powered off early on his first run, he and his Snap-on Tools Pedregon Racing team remain in high spirits after consistent improvements this season resulted in a trip to the winner’s circle at the previous event in Norwalk, Ohio. In 27 Funny Car appearances at Bandimere Speedway, Pedregon has won twice (1993 and 2013), posted three runner-up finishes (2003, 2004, and 2006) and two No. 1 qualifier positions (2011 and 2013).

While DSR Top Fuel pilot Leah Pruett wasn’t able to make her first run of the weekend after a mechanical issue on the burnout, she wasn’t discouraged and expects to make some solid passes on Saturday evening aboard her Mopar Dodge//SRT Redeye dragster in an effort to repeat her No. 1 qualifier positions in both 2017 and 2018 resulting in a runner-up finish and a win respectively. She also set the current track record elapsed time run of 3.733 seconds in optimal cooler conditions in 2017.

Pruett was also back at the wheel of her 2021 Dodge Challenger Mopar Drag Pak for two Friday qualifying sessions at the Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown (FSS) debut at Denver, the fourth event of the eight-race series and is looking forward to running two more qualifying laps on Saturday to improve on her best pass of 8.991 sec. at 154.21 mph. Fellow DSR-prepared Drag Pak driver Mark Pawuk took his Empaco Equipment Dodge Challenger for two consistent runs that put him among the top-five with a best pass of 8.330 sec. at 164.73 mph.

All the on-track action at the Dodge//SRT Mile High Nationals Presented by Pennzoil will be live streamed via NHRA.TV throughout the weekend, while FS1 will provide television highlights of qualifying on Saturday, July 17, from 2-3 p.m. ET  and Sunday, July 18, from 3-4 p.m. ET, with coverage of Sunday’s elimination rounds from 4-7 p.m. ET. This weekend’s event kicks off the NHRA’s three-race western swing which includes Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California, and Pomona Fairplex in Pomona, California, over consecutive weeks.

CORVETTE RACING AT LIME ROCK: Taylor Leads Corvette Sweep

Milner second in GTLM qualifying as rain looms for Saturday’s all-GT race
LAKEVILLE, Conn. (July 16, 2021) – Jordan Taylor claimed the overall pole position for the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park on Friday to lead a 1-2 result for Corvette Racing.Taylor, driving the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R with Antonio Garcia, set a best GT Le Mans (GTLM) lap of 49.958 (106.216 mph) in a 15-minute session for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Saturday’s 3:10 p.m. ET race, with rain predicted, will be an all-GT affair with GTLM and GT Daytona (GTD) headlining IMSA’s return to Lime Rock Park.
Taylor and teammate Antonio Garcia enter Lime Rock after back-to-back victories at Watkins Glen and lead the GTLM Drivers Championship, as does Chevrolet in the Manufacturers standings.
Taylor outqualified Tommy Milner in the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette by just 0.142 seconds. Milner and Nick Tandy were second in the most recent GTLM race at Watkins Glen behind the No. 3 C8.R but were in winning positions in both races at The Glen. They also won the non-points Detroit round in mid-June.
Corvette Racing is a five-time winner at Lime Rock but this is the first race the seven-turn, 1.474-mile circuit for the Corvette C8.R, a shot at an overall race victory during one of the busiest races on the calendar.
Like Watkins Glen within the last month, Lime Rock Park was one venue at which the Corvette C8.R didn’t compete during its debut season. That didn’t impact the team during the back-to-back weekends at Watkins Glen, however, when Corvette Racing took the race win, pole position and fastest race lap in both the six-hour enduro and two-hour, 40-minute sprint race.
The Northeast Grand Prix from Lime Rock Park will air at 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 17 with live streaming coverage on TrackPass and NBC Sports Gold at 3:05 p.m. ET. Live audio coverage from IMSA Radio will be available on IMSA.com, Sirius 216, XM 202 and SiriusXM Online 992.
JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – GTLM POLE-WINNER: “It’s been a busy day. It’s the first time with the C8.R at Lime Rock. Unfortunately we didn’t race here last year, so we’re learning a lot. We had a dry session, a damp session and then qualifying. So we’ve proved that the car is good in all conditions here. It was a good lap to get the pole, and the guys have done a good job leading into this weekend. It’s a new track for us with this car so rolling off the truck strong was important. It was good but we’ve been making some changes to see how the car reacts. So far so good but tomorrow could be a different story.”MORE ON QUALIFYING: “Today was a busy day with two practices and qualifying. It’s the first time we’ve had the C8.R here at Lime Rock, so a lot of work went into this weekend with a lot of preparation. We rolled off the truck very strong. We made some changes through Practice Two even though it was damp to get a read on it. Obviously in qualifying the car was quite strong. The biggest thing was just finding a clear lap with the GTD cars on track. Obviously it’s been a good run for the 3 car so far this season, but at the same time the 4 car has been on our tail every weekend. It’s good to have that intra-team battle. I think we’ll have that all day tomorrow.”RACING FOR OVERALL VICTORY THIS WEEKEND: “I was thinking about that this morning. When you go to the drivers’ briefing, the front-row guys usually go and talk to the Race Director because you’re leading the field. It will be different not having anyone in front of us and not having prototypes coming around in traffic. In one aspect, it will be easier without the traffic but at the same time the intensity will be super-high just because you’re flat-out the whole time. It’s difficult to pass the GTD guys so it will be tricky in traffic. I think strategy could come into play tomorrow. It should be a good race.”PLACES FOR IMPROVEMENT: “Today was messy with the conditions. Antonio started this morning on new tires, and I got in on older tires. The afternoon session was damp so I drove on rain tires and then in the intermediate conditions we went to slicks. Everyone in GTLM was kind of figuring out what it was like on new tires in the dry here. We weren’t here last year so there’s a lot to learn. For me, there was a lot of experimenting. Brake points were different. Carrying speed through Turn Six and Turn Seven… I had a couple of big moments just because I thought I could carry a lot more speed than I actually could. But it’s good to have that in my pocket for tomorrow to know where the limits are.”
TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – QUALIFIED SECOND IN GTLM: “We just missed it a bit with the setup. We’re still working on getting the balance where we need to be. Tomorrow is going to be the challenge if it’s dry with the high temps and the tire degradation. If it’s wet, which is looking likely, that presents its own challenges as well. We got some good work in today but the majority will come tomorrow in warmup to make any last-minute improvements.”

Compass, Gradient Lead Acura Qualifying at Lime Rock Park

Mario Farnbacher runs second-fastest in pro-driver qualifying session
Till Bechtolsheimer and Jeff Kingsley post top-10 efforts in their qualifying runs

Lime Rock, CT. (July 16, 2021) – Mario Farnbacher and Till Bechtolsheimer led the way for Acura today at Lime Rock Park, in qualifying for Saturday’s Northeast Grand Prix, a GT-only round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Piloting his Compass Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo, Farnbacher battled with Jack Hawksworth for maximum championship points in the “pro” driver qualifying, but ended the 15-minute session second in the GTD class, by the narrow margin of just 0.048 seconds.

In the first half of IMSA’s unique GTD qualifying format, for Bronze and Silver-rated drivers, Till Bechtolsheimer headed the Acura effort, qualifying ninth in the Gradient Racing Acura he will share with Marc Miller. Farnbacher’s co-driver, Jeff Kingsley, will start 10th; with the Magnus Racing with Archangel duo of Andy Lally and John Potter starting 13th.

Quote
Mario Farnbacher (#66 Gradient Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo): Earned second-place qualifying points in his session; co-driver Jeff Kingsley will start 10th: “We made big progress with the car throughout the day. We made some big changes to the car [after the first practice], but unfortunately the second practice was interrupted [by rain, lightning], so it was difficult to compare. There were some big question marks for us heading into qualifying, but were able to do a good lap [second fastest]. We’ll take the championship points and prepare for tomorrow.”

Motorcraft/Quick Lane Team Head to New Hampshire

July 16, 2021

With their mid-season slump starting to look like a thing of the past, Matt DiBenedetto and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team are headed to New Hampshire Motor Speedway hoping to post their third top-10 finish this month, and DiBenedetto will be seeking his third-straight finish of sixth or better on the Magic Mile in Loudon.

DiBenedetto finished fifth at New Hampshire in 2019 driving for his previous team then was sixth last year in the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang. He said he feels good about his prospects in Sunday’s Foxwoods Resort Casino 301.

“New Hampshire is a place I always have circled off as being excited to go to,” he said. “I love the low downforce/high horsepower races the most. It fits my driving style for sure.”

“Our cars have been strong there so I’m excited to see if we can go contend for the win.”

Sunday’s 301-lap race is relatively short compared to others on the Cup schedule, and that offers some opportunities for strategy calls that might not work in a longer event.

“It’s a pretty short race, and sometimes strategy is big if cautions fall at odd times,” DiBenedetto said.

DiBenedetto added that he believes the No. 21 team, which is coming off top-10 finishes at Atlanta and Road America, has developed good chemistry between driver, crew chief and crew and is poised to lead laps and compete for race wins.

“We are in the best position we have ever been to go out there and feel like we can absolutely win.”

With no practice or qualifying this weekend, DiBenedetto is set to start 14th on Sunday, as starting positions were determined based on the teams’ performances in the most recent race, at Atlanta Motor Speedway where DiBenedetto finished ninth.

The Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 is set to start just after 3 p.m. Eastern Time with TV coverage on NBCSN. Stage breaks are scheduled for Laps 75 and 185.

HULK SMASH: Winger Wins at Thunderbird for Second Career Hell Tour Victory

Pierce slides English in closing laps to finish ahead again, extends points lead MUSKEGON, MI – July 15, 2021 – For as hard as he and his team worked to get their first win, Ashton Winger made his second career DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory look like he’d done it a hundred times before with a clean sweep of Thursday night’s visit to Thunderbird Raceway. The 21-year-old Hell Tour rookie was fastest in Hot Laps, set quick time in Qualifying, won his Heat Race and the 40-lap Feature to collect his second $5,000 check of the season in front of a packed house, watching him emerge victorious in Victory Lane to his signature Hulk smash-like roof dance celebration. Winger also topped all of the Michigan DIRTcar Late Model regulars in the field, who showed up in full-force to help create a stacked 42-car field. Despite their best efforts to defeat the Summer Nationals regulars, they were unable to best the Georgia boy, who crossed the line a near five seconds over second-place Bobby Pierce. Winger started on the outside pole and trailed polesitter Tanner English, of Benton, KY, in the early going. And unlike most tour rookies, Winger did not need a caution to track down the leader. In fact, not a single yellow flag was displayed in the race that took just under 10 minutes to complete. “I was a little worried on the start. Anytime we’re going to a racetrack with a little bit harder tire, it’s a gamble,” Winger, of Hampton, GA, said in Victory Lane. Winger held onto the middle-high groove around the third-mile oval and got a great run to English’s outside on Lap 15. A smooth exit off of Turn 4 was enough to nip English at the line and give him his first lap led in the race. From there on out, it was domination time in any lane he chose. “I moved around a little bit whenever Tanner [English] had to move around some of them guys. I found a line that was good for me, and really I could maneuver all over, but I was just lucky the cards fell the way they did… shoot, three or four cautions there and we could be looking at a different scenario,” Winger said. Behind him, a war was waging for the runner-up spot between English and Pierce. Pierce, of Oakwood, IL, began pounding the high side of the speedway, working his way toward English’s bumper. His first pass for second came in a cluster of slower cars on Lap 26, just barely crossing the stripe before English to be scored second on that lap. But English had the clearer lane around the bottom and drove away with the spot. Pierce reeled him back in as traffic cleared up, and with just seven laps remaining, he put a big slide job on English in Turns 3-4 to take the spot back for good and increase his points lead yet again. English finished right behind in third, but lost another five points in the standings as he chases his first career Summer Nationals crown. UP NEXT The Summer Nationals Late Models are back in action Friday night at Hartford Raceway for the first $10,000-to-win show of the weekend. As if that weren’t impressive enough, he did it in exactly that many starts, too. And he’s not done yet. “I don’t actually know how many races are left, but I’d like to get into the 20s,” Hoffman, of Mooresville, NC, said in Victory Lane. “Just take it one night at a time and go from there.” Similar to Wednesday night at Circle City, Hoffman started third and did not lead the opening laps. Polesitter Curt Spalding jumped out to the early lead with Jacob Poel behind him. While Poel rolled the low-middle groove of the super slick, third-mile oval, Hoffman dug to his inside and took the spot away as they clicked off Lap 5. It wasn’t five laps later before Hoffman did the same thing to Spalding for the lead. “I was trying to roll Jacob through the middle and just couldn’t get by him, so I chose to get back to the bottom,” Hoffman said. “When I was riding behind Curt, I was like, ‘well this race is probably going to be won in lapped traffic,’ and then he slipped up in Turns 3-4.” Now with the lead and a preferable glass-smooth track underneath him, Hoffman cruised to the checkers with a whopping 8-plus second gap to Spalding at the line. Jeffrey Erickson finished third, Hunt Gossum ran fourth while Poel slipped back to fifth. UP NEXT The Summit Modifieds are back in action Friday night at Hartford Raceway for another battle against Michigan’s finest UMP Modified talent. The winner of the Brandon Ford TV Race Challenge will receive a $10,000 cash award, while second and third will receive $3,000 and $2,000 respectively at the year-end awards banquet.
There have been several movers and shakers within the Brandon Ford TV Challenge Point category. Hudson O’Neal has remained in one of the top two spots, while Kyle Bronson moved from fifth into fourth after the Clash at the Mag weekend at Magnolia Motor Speedway.
McCreadie has not finished outside of the top ten in a TV Challenge race or series points race since Speedweeks, so it is no surprise that he sits on top of both categories. Other than a 15th place finish on Friday at the Clash at the Mag, Richards hasn’t finished outside of the top five in a TV Challenge race since Speedweeks.
Competition continues in the Brandon Ford TV Challenge during the remainder of July during races in Granite City, IL (Tri-City Speedway), Wheatland, MO (Lucas Oil Speedway), and Greenwood, NE (I-80 Speedway) for nearly $650,000 in purse money on the line over the next two weeks.

Saturday, July 17th’s 15th Annual CMH Diamond Nationals will be taped for broadcast on MAVTV Motorsports Network, CBS, CBS Sports Network, and NBCSN, later in the year. Both nights will be live on MAVTV Plus streaming service.
Teams will be back at it for five nights of racing at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, NE. Tuesday, July 20th and Wednesday, July 21st will be a pair of $7,000-to-win shows to line up for Thursday’s $30,000-to-win Al Belt Custom Homes I-80 Nationals. On Friday, July 23rd, Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series teams will compete in two rounds of heat races to line up for Saturday’s $53,000-to-win Imperial Tile Silver Dollar Nationals.

I love going there. It’s a flat track. Entry is fun there. It’s different. It’s a different type of feel than what we have anywhere. You slide the left rear into the corner and you pick up the right front and the first person to get back to the gas is going to be good.” If you were to win Loudon the Lobster, the monster trophy that’s given out to drivers when they win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, what would you do with it?“Oh man. I’d probably get a fish tank and keep him in it. I’d give him a good home so that he could live out his days comfortably as a trophy.”
Tyler Reddick and the No. 8 Cat #WeDigLandscaping Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE at New Hampshire Motor Speedway… Reddick has one previous NASCAR Cup Series start at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, finishing 10th at the “Magic Mile” last year. We thank these customers, NALP and Milton Cat who are vital to the growth and development of our products.
TYLER REDDICK QUOTE: You earned a top-10 finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in your rookie Cup season without any practice beforehand. What do you make of going back to the “Magic Mile” this weekend with one Cup race there under your belt?“New Hampshire Motor Speedway is a track that I’ve had to work really hard at to understand how to run better and get around there properly. I put a lot of work in over the off-season to be better at places like short tracks and road courses where you use a lot of brake, and New Hampshire is a track where you definitely need to manage your brakes well. We’ve done a really good job this year improving at tracks I found challenging before, so I’m excited to see what that means for New Hampshire this Sunday. I’m looking forward to the race, but I also know it’ll take a solid day from start to finish to remain in contention. Track position is important this weekend and executing all the little details perfectly when you have good track position is what it takes to run well and potentially win at Loudon, which is what we’re striving for with the No. 8 Cat #WeDigLandscaping Chevrolet.”
Myatt Snider and the No. 2 Crosley Furniture Chevrolet Camaro at New Hampshire Motor Speedway… Snider will make his first career start at New Hampshire Motor Speedway this Saturday. The 26-year-old driver has never competed on the 1.058-mile oval in any series, but has spent time with both Richard Childress Racing Cup Series drivers – Austin Dillon and Tyler Reddick – to prepare for his track debut.

For more information, please visit www.crosleybrands.comMYATT SNIDER QUOTE:You have never raced previously raced at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. What have your preparations looked like leading into this race? “The good thing is that Richard Childress Racing is a very experienced organization when it comes to running Xfinity Series cars at New Hampshire. I have been leaning on both of our Cup guys – Austin Dillon and Tyler Reddick – to get their advice on how to approach the track. It has been extremely helpful to understand what to expect at a flat track like Loudon and how to get faster throughout the race. My crew has a lot of experience at New Hampshire as well, so there is a wealth of experience that I’m able to pull from.”
“I also think this weekend should play into some of my strengths as a short track racer. I grew up racing at Martinsville Speedway, so I think that will play into our speed on Saturday and it should be a good result for our Crosley Furniture team.”

HARRISON BURTON & WOOD BROTHERS RACING TO TEAM UP IN 2022

Second-Generation Driver Set to Race in NASCAR Cup Series in Iconic No. 21 Ford Mustang
STUART, VA (July 15, 2021) – Harrison Burton, a second-generation driver and four-time NASCAR Xfinity Series race winner, will pilot the famed No. 21 Ford Mustang for Wood Brothers Racing beginning in 2022, the team announced today. Burton will become the latest driver in a long list of legendary names that have piloted the No. 21 Ford for the Woods when he takes over the seat beginning at the 2022 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. Austin Cindric, who had previously been announced as the driver for the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford Mustang in 2022, will now move over to Team Penske to drive the team’s No. 2 Mustang, opening the door for Burton to make a jump to the NASCAR Cup Series full-time.

Burton, the son of former NASCAR Cup Series driver and current NBC race analyst Jeff Burton, has been a mainstay in NASCAR’s lower divisions since arriving on the scene in the Truck Series at just 18 years of age in 2019. In 2020, Burton won four races in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (Fontana, Homestead, Texas and Martinsville) en route to a seventh-place finish in the final point standings and series Rookie of the Year honors.

This season, the 20-year-old Burton has five top-fives and 11 top-10 finishes in 18 races and sits fifth in the Xfinity Series point standings.

“Since I began racing quarter midgets, the hope and goal was always to become a full-time driver in the NASCAR Cup Series,” said Burton. “Now, I get to do this with one of the most storied teams in NASCAR history in the Wood Brothers and with an association with Ford Motor Company and Ford Performance. I don’t think I could have dreamt of a better situation to put myself in when it comes to the start of my NASCAR Cup Series career. Add to that the technical alliance with Team Penske and the knowledge I’ll gain from working with their drivers and I’m really excited for 2022 and the future. This is a great opportunity for me and I can’t thank Eddie and Len Wood enough for giving me this chance.”

Wood Brothers Racing is the oldest active NASCAR team and one of the winningest teams in series history. The team currently has 99 victories at NASCAR’s top level, with the likes of David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Neil Bonnett, Dan Gurney, AJ Foyt and Buddy Baker all visiting Victory Lane with the team. The organization also currently enjoys a technical relationship with Team Penske, which will continue into 2022, along with major support from Ford Performance.

Sponsorship for the No. 21 will be announced at a later date, but will once again include support from Ford Quick Lane and Motorcraft.

“As a team owner, you always want to keep an eye for the future and what’s best for your organization in hopes to set yourself up for success long-term,” said team President and Co-Owner Eddie Wood. “As things have progressed and changed over the last few months, we had the chance to look at what our options are and when we determined that Harrison would be available for our team, we wanted to jump at the opportunity to work with him. Harrison is young, but comes from a family full of successful race car drivers. The advice and support they can offer to Harrison as he makes this transition will be very important to his success. What a lot of us forget is that he is not even 21 years old yet and has only been racing in both the Truck Series and Xfinity Series for a couple of years. So when we looked at the future and finding someone to build our program around, Harrison seemed like a great option.”

“We are quite excited to begin working with Harrison and 2022 is perfect timing,” said team Co-Owner Len Wood. “With the introduction of the new NextGen car next year, we have the ability to grow with him and build our program around what he wants. We don’t want to say it puts him on a level playing field, because there are a lot of great drivers in the Cup Series, but having a rookie come in at the same time a new car is introduced will help build us a solid foundation and hopefully get us off to a strong start.”

Additional details surrounding the 2022 season, including partners, will be announced at a later date.

It’s now July, and he’s won at all three iconic facilities. The Big E was his latest breakthrough on Wednesday night, dominating the Jokers Wild to earn his first-ever trip to victory lane in Rossburg, OH.Most impressive in his route of the daunting 1/2-mile was in fact, his opening 1/2-mile of the feature. Starting sixth, Macedo took it four-wide at the flag stand, darted to the bottom of turn one to steal another spot, and then cleared a slide job into turn three to pass five cars and take the lead on the opening lap.Once into the lead, Macedo set the cruise control and ran off into lap traffic. He encountered several restarts, but nothing could stop the Lemoore, CA native. He survived to score his sixth victory of the season and 12th of his World of Outlaws career.”It’s a really good time to be quick right now,” Macedo mentioned. “This crew is firing on all cylinders. Philip Dietz is one of the best in the business, and we’ve got Clyde Knipp and Nate Repetz both doing a killer job as well. I told Phil at the beginning of the year that I really wanted a win at Eldora. This is one of my favorite tracks, but I’ve never been able to get it done here until now.”Macedo’s $10,000 Jokers Wild win came against the largest field (57 cars) of the season for The Greatest Show on Dirt. Even more cars are expected to pile into the pit area tomorrow as the 38th Kings Royal offers a $175,000 payday to the man who wins it all.On Wednesday, it was all about fine-tuning your equipment with big money on the line come Thursday.”Our half-mile package is incredible right now,” Macedo spoke on the #41. “Philip does such a great job 0f watching the car and understanding what I need. You have to have a really well balanced car to win at places like this, and we’ve really got our balance figured out right now. I can cut nice, smooth laps without too much effort.”After starting on the pole position, Brian Brown settled for a second-place finish to kick off the four-night stretch at Eldora. His resurgence comes amid a change in personnel as he brought uncle and National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Danny Lasoski on board to take over Crew Chief duties. The decision has immediately paid off.”You know I haven’t smiled in awhile,” Brown candidly spoke. “It’s so good to be in contention for a win against these guys. Up front and on TV is where the #21 and our partners belong. This is only night one and I’m pumped. Driver error cost me the lead and let Carson get by, but its awesome to be this good this early here.”David Gravel rounded out the podium on Wednesday night with a last-lap pass lifting him over Kerry Madsen for the third spot.”I hurt myself on the start, but the car really came around and came to life at the end,” Gravel noted. “That makes me feel good heading into these next three nights. Tomorrow is a whole different ball game, so we’ll see what kind of hand we’re dealt.”Kerry Madsen aboard the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing #14 and Aaron Reutzel in the Roth Motorsports #83 closed out the top-five.Also finishing in the top-10 was four-time winner Ian Madsen in sixth, eight-time winner Rico Abreu in seventh, five-time winner Brent Marks in eighth, 27-time winner Paul McMahan in ninth, and 21-time winner Kyle Larson with a 21st-to-1oth run worthy of the KSE Racing Hard Charger Award.UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series will be back at Eldora Speedway tomorrow, Thursday, July 15 for the 38th running of the Kings Royal. RUNNING IN CIRCLES: Pierce Dominates Debut at Circle City for Eighth Win of Season

Career Victory No. 35 ties Pierce with Shirley for fourth-most all-time

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – July 14, 2021 – As a three-time DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion, Bobby Pierce knows a lot of the tracks on the schedule like the back of his hand. And while no driver in the pit area had any major abundance of laps around the Circle City Raceway, Pierce showed he knew it better than anyone else in the field Wednesday night, earning his eighth win of the season in his second-ever appearance at the quarter-mile bullring.

Pierce was on the roster for the only other Super Dirt Late Model race contested at the newly constructed Circle City facility back in early June, where he finished 12th against the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series stars. It was a solid first go at the all-new facility, but Pierce knew when he came back for the Hell Tour stop, he’d have the advantage over any driver getting their first look at the track.

“Just knowing the shape of the racetrack is huge,” Pierce, of Oakwood, IL, said in Victory Lane. “Where the wall comes in, where it comes out, and where the infield is – just the entire shape of the track. You get the feel of the banking, where it might dip and where it doesn’t, and really use that to your advantage.”

Pierce powered to the lead from the pole at the drop of the green and immediately took off, opening up a small gap over Spencer Hughes in the early going. The race’s lone caution flag flew 15 laps in and restacked the field, but Pierce was feeling the racey track conditions and his car setup and galloped away from the pack once again.

“[The track] really impressed me a lot tonight. The top came in, and I think if I started a little farther back, I could’ve maneuvered around and got to the front. So, big thanks to everyone with the racetrack – they did a hell of a job,” Pierce said.

At the drop of the checkered, Pierce’s lead stretched over seven full seconds in traffic. In Victory Lane, Pierce credited his crew for a heads-up tire decision in the eleventh hour, swapping out the softer Hoosier LM20 they had on earlier for the harder LM40 just before go-time.

“We were all scrambling around back there in the pit area, deciding on which tire to run, and I think we chose right,” Pierce said.

Behind him, an intense battle for the two remaining podium spots was boiling over between Hughes, Tanner English and Joe Godsey. Hughes maintained the runner-up spot for most of the race until English caught him in traffic and began trading passes back-and-forth for the spot. While those two were at war, Godsey came creeping up on the bottom and took the spot away from them both on Lap 34.

Hughes regained the position to Godsey’s outside and held it again until the final lap, where Godsey snuck by him on the bottom once again and beat him to the line to notch his best career Summer Nationals finish of second. Hughes settled for third while English and three-time DIRTcar Late Model national points champion Rusty Schlenk, making his first Hell Tour appearance of the season, rounded out the top-five.

THIRTEEN DREAM: Hoffman Ties Own Single-Season Wins Record with W at Circle City

Nicely leads opening laps, nearly passes Hoffman in home stretch

Thirteen starts. Thirteen wins. But this one was Nick Hoffman’s closest win yet.

After redrawing third-best before the debut Feature for the DIRTcar Summit Racing EquipmentModified Nationals at Circle City Raceway Wednesday night, Hoffman had his consecutive laps-led streak broken at 290 when polesitter Tyler Nicely led the opening four circuits to a three-car battle for the lead around the brand-new quarter-mile oval.

“I was really worried about that redraw,” Hoffman said in Victory Lane. “Obviously, I had to pass somebody tonight, so Facebook should be pumped up about that.”

Outside polesitter Dylan Woodling had a stellar run going on the outside and swiped the lead away on Lap 5. But soon after reaching the backstretch, his #3w appeared to lose power instantly as he slowed into Turns 3-4, giving up the lead to Hoffman still with 20 laps left.

Hoffman took off on the restart and opened up a solid gap over Nicely as he approached lapped traffic. He maintained this advantage until the closing laps, where the traffic got two and three-deep in front of him. Hoffman struggled to cleanly maneuver through them at first, and Nicely was able to close the gap completely with under five laps remaining.

“[Crew member Shawn] showed me I had a pretty decent size lead, and then it went to nothing. I could see [Nicely] down there, and I just had to use that one lapped car up off of Turn 4… I gotta go, y’know? They’re having their own race, you can’t blame them for that. It’s just, at some point, you gotta go, and I got a little aggressive with him and tore it up a bit,” Hoffman said.

Hoffman did make contact with one of the slower cars to get by, but he was able to maintain the lead. A final restart with one lap left restacked the field and gave Nicely one final chance at the three-time champ, but Hoffman pulled away at the drop of the green to his 51st career Summit Modified win – one that also tied his own record for most in a single season.

Nicely finished second while Dillon Nusbaum crossed in third. Tommy Sheppard Jr. earned the Hard Charger honors, coming from 20th to finish fourth after breaking a transmission before his Heat Race.

DETROIT (July 14, 2021) – National Hot Rod Association’s (NHRA) teams use the three-race Western Swing during the midsection of the regular season as a gauge of how they stack up in their respective categories entering the stretch run to the seven-race Countdown to the Championship.
“It’s where you want to really want things to start coming together,” said Robert Hight, driver of the Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car.Hight and teammate John Force, driver of the PEAK/BlueDEF Platinum Camaro SS, enter the first leg of the Western Swing at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado, with the momentum of advancing to the final round in five of the seven Funny Car events – winning three times.
“The air is a little different so there’s adjustments to be made but Denver sets the tone for the next two races, whether it’s riding the momentum or motivation to get after it,” added Hight, a four-time winner and three-time No. 1 Funny Car qualifier at the strip southwest of Denver.
This year, the Western Swing also includes stops at scenic Sonoma Raceway in northern California and Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California. All three events were not held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Denver is not part of the Pro Stock schedule this year. Drivers of the Chevrolet Camaro SS will catch up with the nitro divisions at Sonoma Raceway on July 23-25. Greg Anderson sits atop the standings with reigning champion Erica Enders in second. Both have two wins.
John Force is the only Funny Car driver to sweep the Western Swing (1994) and won the first two legs in 2016 before falling in the first round of eliminations at Seattle. John Force Racing has a swing sweep to its credit in 2016 when Hight won in Denver, Courtney Force prevailed in Sonoma and John Force wrapped up the victory in Seattle.
Force, who recorded victory No. 152 and 153 of his illustrious career earlier this season, is second in the Funny Car standings. Hight is fourth.
“It’s been a good season. This PEAK Chevy has been running really well. Daniel Hood and Tim Fabrisi, they have a handle on it,” said Force, who has an NHRA-record eight wins at the racetrack. “I just have to get out there and do my job, and that’s not easy with all these young guys out there running against me. I’ve got to work hard to keep up with them. It’s working so far.”
Brittany Force also heads to the mountains with momentum. The Monster Energy/Flav-R-Pac team raced to their second runner-up finish of the season and set the track Top Fuel elapsed time record at the most recent event in Norwalk, Ohio, in the Chevrolet dragster. She is fourth in the driver standings.
David Barton and Aaron Stanfield, who have won Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown races this season in their Chevrolet COPO Camaros, highlight the field this weekend in the fourth race of the eight-event series.
FS1 will telecast eliminations live at 4 p.m. ET Sunday, July 18.

We head to the mountain for the Mile-High Nationals in Denver and coming off a runner-up finish in Ohio, we feel confident going into this next one and getting the Western Swing started. Our car has been running consistent and our team is ready for a win.”
FUNNY CAR:JOHN FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, PEAK/BLUEDEF PLATINUM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (two-time winner this season; No. 1 qualifier in Charlotte four-wide; second in points): “I’ve always loved racing in Denver. I’ve done well here so Denver must like me racing here, too. The fans are great and it’s a great show with Bandimere tucked into the mountain here. Hoping to add to those numbers, come up with a big win not just for me but for my sponsors. It’s going to be an exciting weekend especially with the night racing.”
ROBERT HIGHT, JOHN FORCE RACING, AUTO CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (runner-up in two races, winner at Houston; No. 1 qualifier in Las Vegas four-wide; four-time winner at the track): “This Auto Club Chevy team is working hard. All the crew guys, Jimmy Prock, Chris Cunningham, they’re putting in the work. It was a long break, but we took advantage of the time, the team got a lot of work done at the shop to set us up for the three-race Western Swing. I enjoy the back-to-back race weekends, it gives teams and drivers a chance to get in a rhythm, get some momentum.”
