IF I HAD TOLD YOU IN THE MIDDLE OF STAGE 2 WHEN THEY WERE CHANGING ALTERNATOR BELT, THAT YOU WOULD WIN THIS THING, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE SAID?“I wouldn’t have believed it, that’s for sure. I don’t know. I didn’t even feel that good early. Started changing some things and they were doing a good job letting me know what to do inside the cockpit to get better. About that time, I noticed my battery was going low, so I was getting stressed out. Like man, I’m not going to get knocked out of the Playoffs like this. It wasn’t looking too good. Thankfully, everybody on our No. 5 car did a great job of staying calm. Cliff (Daniels, crew chief) as always, did a great job of communicating with me and what was going on and getting the battery changed and the alternator changed and whatever it takes to get our battery running. But man, my HendrickCars.com Chevy was good. William (Byron) was obviously really good. It’s a bummer to see that not work out for him. But I think the No. 9 (Chase Elliott) ended up making it, so that was some great perseverance by that team, too. So, it’s just awesome to be with Hendrick Motorsports and glad to get another win and I’m looking forward to the next round a lot.”
WERE YOU AWARE THAT AT TIMES TODAY, YOU WERE BELOW THE CUTLINE AND GOING TO MISS THE NEXT ROUND?“Yeah, I obviously had a pretty good idea. I’ve gone through it a few years ago in the No. 42 and when you think you’re good, then all of a sudden, you’re running like 40th. And you’re like well, I’m down below the cutline. I knew I was going to have some sketchy moments. I just had to pick my way through traffic and stay calm. We had some good restarts there at the end and I was able to kind of use my tire advantage to get under Denny (Hamlin) and kind of squeeze some real estate off of No. 4 (Kevin Harvick) there. It was fun racing with Tyler (Reddick). He’s one of the best there is. I don’t like racing him because he’s so good and so hard to race and pass. So, it was just a fun race there and a lot of craziness all day long.”
TYLER REDDICK, NO. 8 LENOVO CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 2ndI KNOW YOU ARE EXCITED ABOUT YOUR FINISH TODAY, BUT YOU PROBABLY WISH YOU WERE IN THE PLAYOFFS?“I am fired up because we had a really good car today. We had to start 29th because of crashing at Talladega last week and didn’t have a great pit stall because of that as well. So, it really forced our hand to be off sequence and we were in a situation there pretty early in Stage 1 where we were on new tires and I thought I had established myself in the outside and got in the wall and knocked both sides in and that hurt me a little bit.  As the race progressed and we were in that situation where we were trying to chase Kyle (Larson) down and I just knew we couldn’t change anything about what happened. It does leave a ‘what if’ in your mind.  It’s like if I hadn’t crashed this car early in the race, and almost ended our day, it should have been a little bit faster.” REGARDING CONTACT WITH WILLIAM BYRON: “I just flat out made a mistake and ran in the back of the 24. I am trying to stay as close as I can, and we are all trying to brake to the limit of the car and I got to the bumper trying to put myself back in position again to make a pass to the inside or outside. I got into the back of him ever so slightly and that is all it took to unhook the rear tires. Not on purpose.  It’s just that small amount of contact that changed the trajectory that much. That was shocking to me and sure disappointing.” DO YOU UNDERSTAND HIS FRUSTRATION?“Absolutely. He is racing for everything and second means nothing. He just broke through on the best tires and in position to make the pass and take the win away. And yeah, I took that from him. So, he handled it very well and I would probably have been a little more upset than he was.  He was great at listening and hearing what I said, but I really understand his frustration.” 
WITH YOU AND AUSTIN IN THE TOP FIVE MOST OF THE DAY, WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THE ROAD COURSE PROGRAM AT RCR?“It’s gone in the right direction really well and having AJ Allmendinger come in and be a part of Kaulig Racing and work on making our stuff better on the Xfinity side, and now on the Cup side, has really helped.  Our team worked really hard in the off season to clean up and make better what was our worst type of racing. A year ago here, I was absolutely terrible and just dreading getting to it, but now with this car, we felt like we had the best shot to win. Its just a shame to not take advantage of it.”
ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY / CHARLOTTE FC CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 10thWHEN DID YOU ISSUES WITH THE BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR COME UP?“Pretty early, I would assume. I probably don’t catch that until it’s been a bit, right? I’m not sitting thee staying at the volt gauge. But there pretty early, we knew we had a volt issue. It acted like it threw the belt, So, we came down and put a belt on it and it didn’t. Don’t know what we had going on, but it’s unfortunate. It’s tough to make a car live long here without any brake fans and tire cooling, but Greg (Ives, crew chief) and all the guys on the No. 48 Ally team did such a good job letting me know what I needed to do to get it to the finish line and what I could and couldn’t do with fans; and we put a battery in it at one point and kind of went from there. I hate it. I’m glad we got a top 10. I’m exhausted. I’m just mentally drained after the roler coaster that was. But it’s good to get a top 10. I wish we had more. Congrats to the No. 5 (Kyle Larson, race winner). The kid is super-human. It’s cool to see. I’m really happy for Kyle.”
WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 VALVOLINE CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 11thI KNOW YOU CAME UP A BIT SHORT, BUT WHAT CAN YOU TAKE FROM THIS PERFORMANCE TODAY?“It was great. We had a really good car in two of the three races in this Round and today we had an amazing car, probably capable of winning, but just didn’t have things go our way there. At that point when I got up to third, my tires were shot, and there were only two laps to go. I wasn’t going to win, and made a mistake to not finish third, but at that point I was just mad.” ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH WHAT TYLER (REDDICK) SAID ABOUT IT BEING A MISTAKE IN HITTING YOU?“Yeah, I know it was a mistake, but it doesn’t make any difference.  The awareness there in that situation where a guy is there in the Playoffs and the first guy on new tires is probably going to win the race.  And there was just a lack of awareness there.  I feel like if the roles were reversed, I would be aware.” DID YOU TALK TO HIM ABOUT IT?“Yeah, I just first off wanted to hear it from him and not take it for granted that it was a mistake. And yeah, at that point, what do you do?” YOU SAID YOU WERE MAD. WHAT WERE THE RANGE OF EMOTIONS TODAY?“At the end I was just at a full rage, so I didn’t really care about finishing third because that wasn’t going to do anything for me in the Playoffs. It sucks now that we didn’t finish third, but overall, we were in position to win.  We were leading on the long run, the caution comes out, we pass all the guys on new tires, and we were the first guys on new tires.  That’s all you can do.”
CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 12th HOW DO YOU COMPARTMENTALIZE ALL THE STRESSFUL MOMENTS TODAY?“Yeah, our team did a great job of putting the car back together and that was really the bottom line. They just took the right amount of time to get it fixed and fixed properly so as to not have tire rubs and cut a tire down and end our day. Super excited about that and excited about three more weeks and another opportunity to win a championship.” DID YOU SEE (KEVIN) HARVICK IN YOUR MIRROR AND DID YOU EXPECT WHAT YOU GOT?“I don’t have anything to say about him or anything.  Just glad to be moving on and that is all that matters to me.” HOW DID THE TEAM KEEP YOU CALM DURING THOSE MOMENTS? IT SEEMS YOU HAVE SOME VETERAN LEADERSHIP AROUND YOU?“Yeah, the good news is that we have been fighting together for a few years now so I think we all understand what is important to us.  We are all looking forward to three more weeks.” YOU MENTIONED YOUR TEAM. To overcome adversity; and fortunately, it was early enough in the race and we were able fix it and got a caution and was able to keep fighting. So, I’m just really proud of that. We could have easily given up or not fixed to the proper standard and have something break or had a tire rub, so everybody just did a really good job today and I’m super proud of that. Coming off of a really fast car, I thought we had a shot to win and obviously that didn’t happen. But in the grand scheme, moving on is the most important things and our season is still alive. So, I’m pumped.”

Spirited Battle By Tyler Reddick and the No. 8 Lenovo Chevrolet Team Results in Second-Place Finish at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL

“The Richard Childress Racing team prepared one heck of a Lenovo Chevrolet for the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL today. We had a ton of speed right from the start of Stage 1 and quickly climbed forward from our 29th-place starting spot. We made an unscheduled pit stop early in the race, and once again were able to race our way back towards the front quickly. That shows just how fast of a car Randall Burnett and everyone at RCR and ECR built. Our Chevy had a lot of grip and a lot of power. We stuck to the track pretty good for the most part. Late in Stage 3 I got into the 24, and I just hate that it happened. It’s not something I meant to do. I’m proud we fought to a second-place finish. I wish we could’ve finished one position better, but we’ll keep fighting. It meant a lot today to drive a pink Lenovo Chevrolet for breast cancer awareness, so thank you to Lenovo for keeping survivors in mind.” -Tyler Reddick

ENNIS, Texas (Oct. 10, 2021) – The week long Stampede of Speed at Texas Motorplex just outside of Dallas was capped off Sunday with the final eliminations of the Texas NHRA FallNationals. Brittany Force and the Monster Energy team led John Force Racing with a semifinal finish while John Force with the PEAK Antifreeze and Coolant and Robert Hight with the AAA Texas Chevrolet Camaros made second round exits. With an extra $15,000 in their pocket and their 11th No. 1 qualifier of the season in the bag, Brittany Force and the Monster Energy team continued to roll out stellar numbers on race day. In the first round, Force would lay down a 3.703-second pass at 334.15 mph to defeat Joe Morrison’s 7.811 at 90.75. Facing off with Clay Millican in the second round, the David Grubnic and Mac Savage tuned dragster kept up it’s performance with a 3.710-second run at 332.10 mph that bettered Millican’s 3.734 at 323.19. The victory put Force against 2020 NHRA Rookie of the Year and eventual race winner Justin Ashley in the semifinals. It was a close side-bye-side race with Force laying down a 3.727-second pass at 332.84 mph and Ashley going 3.740 at 325.30 mph. Force would be edged by Ashley on the starting line. He would have a .061-second reaction time while Force would have a .081. “Tough weekend for this Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team. We qualified well, we brought home the $15,000 check for going low Friday nights, got the No. 1 qualifier and then got beat in the semis. Overall, we picked up points and we went some rounds but to lose in the semis the way we did is tough,” Force said. “It was a close side-by-side race, but he had me on the tree. So, we’re going to pack up, go to Bristol and recover from this one.” Robert Hight and the AAA Texas team found some consistency in qualifying, going low three of the four sessions and earning their second No. 1 of the season 70th of Hight’s career. That consistency continued in the first round when the AAA Chevy went 3.953-seconds at 304.46 mph to defeat Jeff Arend and his 5.951 at 131.13. Hight’s second round match-up with J.R. Todd was a driver’s test. Both hot rods went up in smoke putting Hight and Todd in a pedal fest. Hight’s 5.955-second pass at 220.98 mph wasn’t quite enough to overtake Todd’s 4.796 at 205.19. “We had something going there for a while. It’s a good sign for these last three races. This AAA team is just focusing on taking it one run at a time and having some fun along the way,” Hight said. “We had put a lot of pressure on ourselves and there’s still pressure, but we need to enjoy ourselves. We know how to race, Jimmy Prock and Chris Cunningham, they know what they’re doing.” After having to bring out their back-up car due to their Friday night fireball, John Force and the PEAK Chevy were on their game in the first round of eliminations. Force, with a .080-second reaction time, would come out with the win on a hole shot over Alexis DeJoria. The PEAK Camaro went 3.916-seconds at 324.44 mph to DeJoria’s 3.893 at 329.91 with her .110 reaction time. In the second round, Force would face Cruz Pedregon for the 113th time in his career. It would be close race until the PEAK car put a hole out down track that pushed Force towards the centerline. Force would have to let up to run only 4.299-seconds at 225.07 mph to Pedregon’s 3.925 at 329.10. “A little bit of a tough weekend out for this PEAK Chevrolet. We had some issues but I’m proud of my guys,” Force said. “Had to bring out the back-up car and they had some long nights and early mornings getting it ready. It ran good for a couple laps but had some bad luck with a cylinder going out in that second round. We’ll get it figured out and be ready for Bristol next week.” The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship continues next weekend, Oct. 15-17, with the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.

DALLAS (Oct. 10) — Troy Coughlin Jr. had another spectacular final-four showing Sunday at the Texas NHRA FallNationals, upsetting higher-qualified Pro Stock racers Kyle Koretsky and Rodger Brogdon to reach the semifinals of the season’s third-to-last race. “We were close,” Coughlin said of his glimpse at reaching the finals. “We stepped on a banana peel about 70 feet down the racetrack and ended up losing traction, and that was the end of it. But I still feel awfully proud of this team and this group of guys.” That hypothetical banana peel showed up during Coughlin’s semifinal race with points leader Greg Anderson, which had started off with a huge .028 head-start recorded by Coughlin. Had his JEGS.com Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro not lost traction, a strong case could be made that Coughlin would have reached his third final round of the year. Anderson went on to post a beatable 6.666 at 205.51 mph.

“We always try to put our best foot forward, no matter who is in the other lane, but obviously beating Greg would have been helped my teammate (Erica Enders) get closer to a fifth world championship,” Coughlin said, “and It definitely hurts when things like that happen. We did what we thought we needed to do to win. It just didn’t hold this time.” Enders entered the race within one round of Anderson’s lead but she lost in Round 2 earlier in the day, giving Anderson a little breathing room in the standings.  Coughlin had been cruising up until his race against Anderson. After uncharacteristically qualifying in the bottom half of the field — just the second time this year that’s happened — he overpowered first-round opponent Kyle Koretsky with a 6.636 at 205.38 mph to Koretsky’s 6.664 at 205.82 mph. In Round 2, veteran Rodger Brogdon was in the other lane, but he shook his tires early in the run, allowing Coughlin to zip away to a 6.652 at 205.38 mph, a pass that was quick enough to earn Team JEGS lane choice in the semifinals.

“We made some great runs today,” Coughlin said. “These guys — Mark Ingersoll (crew chief), Steven Hurley, Eric Luzinski, Kyle Bates and Kelly Murphy — fill me with so much confidence. It’s a great feeling to know they’re behind me. “I think we can all walk outta here with a lot to be proud of. There are two races left, Las Vegas and Pomona (Calif.), and we’re going to do everything we can to win them both.” The 21st annual Dodge NHRA Nationals take place Oct. 29-31 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

(10/9/2021 – Alex Nieten) Hanford, CA… The NARC-King of the West twin 20-lap Morrie Williams Memorial Fujitsu Features at Hanford’s Keller Auto Speedway weaved wildly different tales for the victors, Dominic Scelzi and first-time series winner Mitchel Moles.

Scelzi started from the pole in the first feature and brought the field to green alongside fellow front row starter Rico Abreu.  Before the field could get through the first set of turns, Mitchel Moles spun from his third starting spot in front of the field. Miraculously, everyone missed him.

On the ensuing restart Justin Sanders drove the Works Limited No. 57 by Abreu for second.  Sanders stalked Scelzi as the two most winningest sprint car drivers with NARC and in the nation in 2021 navigated slower cars.

Scelzi’s race nearly ended with heartbreak on lap eight when Steven Kent spun right in front of him coming out of turn four. Scelzi jumped to the outside near the wall and managed to squeeze between Kent’s machine and the barrier, just grazing the fence but not harming his Scelzi Enterprises/Red Rose Transportations No. 41.

Racing resumed for a few laps following the yellow for Kent until a stopped Kurt Nelson slowed the action again with nine circuits remaining.

The hometown hero, DJ Netto, jumped into the runner-up spot in his Netto Ag/Penny Newman Gain No. 88N on the restart but wasn’t able to mount serious a charge at Scelzi.  The point leader held on to win by a comfortable margin. Netto and Sanders filled out the podium behind the Fresno native.

The victory marked Scelzi’s sixth of the year, a new personal best for a season, and the 15th of his career with KWS.  Rico Abreu, Willie Croft, Kyle Hirst, Blake Carrick, Tim Kaeding, Sean Becker and Mitchel Moles completed the top-10.

The front row in the second feature was comprised of Shane Hopkins and Jessie Attard after the invert based on the first feature’s finish was applied.

Attard took command early in search of his first series victory, and Moles, who started 11th, immediately began his charge.  Moles began picking cars off on the bottom side of the track and received a little help on lap three when Ryan Bernal and Ryan Robinson were involved in an accident, gifting Moles two more spots in his journey toward the front.

On the restart, Moles got back to work on the bottom, cruising by his competition within the top-five.  Another yellow flew on lap five for a spun Rico Abreu. Moles stole the lead on the restart from Attard and quickly built a comfortable advantage.

As the laps dwindled Moles’ greatest threat began to creep toward the front. Using the same bottom line as Moles, Fremont’s Shane Golobic moved his NOS Energy Drink/Elk Grove Ford No. 17W into second on lap seven. When Golobic got to the runner-up spot, Moles held a huge lead of roughly 15 car lengths, but the 12-time NARC feature winner started to slice into the margin.

With five laps to go Golobic had all but erased Moles’ advantage. However, the pilot of the Roth Enterprises No. 83JR showed the poise of a veteran in pursuit of his first series victory, clearing two lapped cars in one corner to give himself enough space to seal the deal.

Moles’ triumphs marked the third time of 2021 a driver has earned their inaugural series victory. Oddly enough, it was also the first time Roth Motorsports visited NARC-KWS victory since the winner of the first feature, Scelzi, took the 83 to the winner’s circle in 2019.

Behind Moles and Golobic, Tim Kaeding rounded out the podium in his R&B Company/Teichert No 42X for his second top-three in his last trio of KWS races at Keller Auto Speedway.

Justin Sanders finished in fifth after starting 20th and was the only driver to earn top-fives in both feature events, collecting him enough points to win the Morrie Williams Memorial points title and the $2,000 that came with it. Scelzi and Moles’ main event wins netted them each $3,200.

Spots 4-10 in the second feature were occupied by Austin McCarl, Justin Sanders, Shane Hopkins, Blake Carrick, Kyle Hirst, Jessie Attard and Kalib Henry.

Up next for the NARC-King of the West Fujitsu Sprint Cars is a double header weekend set for October 29th and October 30th at Keller Auto Speedway for the Anthony Simone Classic and Kern County Raceway Park.

The Canadian added his name to the short stellar list of drivers who have won NAPA Super DIRT Week’s 358 Modified and 200-lap Super DIRTcar Series events OSWEGO, NY – Oct. 9, 2021 – Open the NAPA Super DIRT Week record book to a random page and blindly lay your finger down anywhere. There’s a good chance it rests on the name Stewart Friesen. However, it’s visibly absent in one section.The Northeast Modified star, turned NASCAR Truck Series championship contender, holds the second most Billy Whittaker Cars 200 victories with five. In the last 11 years of the event, he’s only missed the podium twice. And of his five wins, he holds two of the most prestigious victories in the history of the event – he won the final 200-lap Super DIRTcar Series race at the Syracuse Mile and won the event’s first race hosted at Oswego Speedway.But of all his NAPA Super DIRT Week accomplishments, he’d never won the DIRTcar 358 Modified Salute to the Troops 150. He finished second four times, but never stood atop the podium. He changed that Saturday night at Oswego Speedway.Having locked himself into the prestigious $20,000-to-win, 150-lap, race as one of the six fastest drivers in Thursday’s Tim Trial sessions, Friesen lined up fourth on the starting grid and methodically planned out his quest to accomplish the feat that’s denied him year after year.To get to that point, he had to duel with a stellar cast of 358 Modified drivers. Billy Dunn, the 2021 DIRTcar 358 Modified champion, had earned the SRI Performance Pole Award and 2021 DIRTcar 358 Modified Hoosier Tire Weekly champion and defending Billy Whittaker Cars 200 champion Mat Williamson was on the Low-E Insulation Outside Pole. Rising Modified star Tim Sears, Jr. started to the inside of Friesen and seven-time Salute to the Troops 150 champion Billy Decker was one spot behind him.There was going to be nothing easy about picking up his first Salute to the Troops 150 title.When Dave Farney showed the 40-car the green flag for the first time, Williamson launched ahead of Dunn to take the lead, while the red #49 faded from the pole to fourth. The long race was halted early when Peter Britten’s night ended on Lap 3 after an incident put him in the Turn 2 wall.Williamson, who had won every NAPA Super DIRT Week Feature event this week, held command out front for the first quarter of the race. It wasn’t a comfortable 60 laps on the throne, though. Sears kept the pressure on him the whole time, occasionally peaking his nose underneath the red #6 for a pass. During this time Friesen had fallen out of the top-five.A caution came out with about 90 laps to go and several lead drivers like Williamson, Larry Wight – who had charged his way up from seventh to third – and Friesen decided it was the right time to pit for adjustments. That handed the lead to Sears and placed Dunn in second.When the race commenced, Sears maintained a steady lead over Dunn and Michael Maresca, now in third. The top-three at the time were each separated by about two car lengths and rarely gained or lost time to each other. Only when a mistake was made, or a rut was hit wrong were they able to close the gap. At one point Dunn was able to sneak underneath Sears when he missed his line going into Turn 1 but failed to make the past. Shortly after, Dunn had his own misstep, which allowed Maresca to steal second place.Friesen, Wight and Williamson were slowly making their way back to the front after their pit stop. Williamson had restarted 22nd and didn’t crack the top-10 for another 26 laps. Friesen restart beside him in 21st but had better luck with his march back to the front, finding the top-10 in a 15-lap span. Wight restarted 15th and only needed six laps to get to 10th.The sixth caution of the night came out on Lap 90 for Rocky Warner, who slowed on track with an issue. Officials decided it would be their competition caution. Sears and Anthony Perrego, who was third at the time, were the only two top runners to take advantage of it. With them pulling off, that placed Maresca in the lead, Danny Johnson in second, Wight in third, Friesen in fourth and Williamson in fifth.By this point in the race, Friesen had found his groove around the high side of the track. He stuck to it, and it never failed him.“It was a little dirty early,” Friesen said about the top lane. “Just tried to clean it off and the top started getting better and better and better. Then, I was able to set sail up there. Got through a couple cautions. Maresca was super-fast. It was a pretty nerve-wracking 150 laps.”He got by Wight for third on Lap 94 and then past Johnson for second on Lap 95. Ten laps later, Wight suffered a right rear suspension failure that eventually took him out of the race.When the race resumed, Friesen continued to work his high lane to perfection. With it conforming to his liking he was able to power to the outside of Maresca and pass him for the lead on Lap 115.The record books will show the Niagra-on-the-Lake, Ontario native led every lap from that point on to claim the elusive victory, but Maresca did not let him breathe easy. He kept the pressure on the Halmar #44 for those closing 35 laps, holding Friesen close enough to pounce if he made a mistake. And with two laps to go, it almost happened.“That last couple got a little crazy,” Friesen said. “My spotter said good job guys, while I hooked down in the middle and almost flipped. Everyone said keep going, keep going, one more lap. We had a great race car. Enough to get it done.”Friesen saw the duel waving checkered flags first with Maresca on his bumper at the line.However, when the race concluded, Maresca was found to be more than 20 pounds light at the scales and disqualified, placed 40th in the finishing order. That moved fellow Canadian Williamson to second and Jimmy Phelps into the final podium spot.“We had a good car, just had to survive there,” Williamson said. “I was really surprised there that Michael (Maresca) was able to make it on fuel. He had a good car. I feel bad for them guys. He was definitely up there battling for a win. That sucks for them guys. You don’t want to finish second this way, but we’ll take it.”Phelps was the Penske Racing Shocks Hard Charger, picking up an extra $500, with his incredible run from 35th to third. He had to race his way into the main event through a Last Chance Showdown and then lap by lap picked his way through the field in his #98H machine.“Obviously, attrition helped a little bit. We had a car that stayed together,” Phelps said. “It shows how good these guys are.“I’m not going to lie. I was half tempted to pull in early. I couldn’t see. It was rough as hell. And they’re not the easiest to drive with a full load of fuel. But as the race went on, the guys made some good changes during the pit stop that helped me get more comfortable. When the fuel burned off, I was able to move around a little more and find some speed.”An 11th place finish for Dunn wasn’t the result he envisioned after starting from the pole, but with most of his body panels off the car after getting involved in a wreck late in the race, he was proud to finish. And in doing so, he clinched the 2021 DIRTcar 358 Modified championship.“I wanted to finish the race,” Dunn said. “We had a pretty competitive car there for a while. I was trying not to have this happen, but we finished the race, and I got the points championship. That’s all that matters.”When Farney went to congratulate Friesen in Victory Lane, the first thing the newly crowned Salute to the Troops 150 champion could say was, “Wow.”“It’s all about the troops,” Friesen said. “The men and women who serve north of the border and here in the United States. I’m proud to be here. WOODSTOCK, GA (October 9, 2021) – Jonathan Davenport won his first career Dixie Shootout on Saturday night at the Red Clay at Woodstock – Historic Dixie Speedway, taking the $15,000 first place prize. Davenport led all 50 laps in winning his seventh Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event of 2021. Brandon Overton finished in second followed by Chris Madden, Tim McCreadie, and Earl Pearson Jr. Davenport took the lead at the start of the race and was never seriously threatened during the race that was held in front of a packed house. Overton moved from fourth to second with 15 laps to go. Overton, who was looking for his 29th overall win of the season, had two last shots at Davenport as a caution with six laps to go and one for Jimmy Owens’ flat tire as the drivers were heading to the checkered flag, but Overton could not get a run-on Davenport to try to steal the win. Overton fell .930 seconds behind Davenport at the checkers. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 57th time in his career, the three-time series champion was elated to get his first win in one of the most prestigious late model races in the Southeast. “This one is for Jason Durham. He is a huge part of this deal; we definitely miss him. We worked at my house this week on the car and it’s the first time I have had a race car at my house or my shop. It’s kind of cool to come out here and set fast time, win my heat and the feature at a place I have never won at before.” “I have wanted to win here for so long; to be honest when me and my dad were racing, we were almost scared to come here to race because the competition was so good. It’s so hard to win here so we just stayed up in the North Georgia mountains and into Tennessee. This place is tough. I have come close here several times, but I have never had a race car like I had tonight here.” Overton came home in second after finishing just short of his first career Dixie Shootout victory. “Once I got to second, I knew something was wrong. The tire was laying down really bad when we fired back up. I thought ‘I am going to have a flat and blow the whole deck out’ but we held on. Congrats to JD he did good. He just got out in front and that’s all it took. We never really got into any traffic there at the end so I could move around. We ran second against the best guys in the country.” Madden, in his first race with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series this year, came home in third as the 2-time Dixie Shootout winner rounded out the podium. “Those guys ahead of me, they have had the fastest cars in the country this year for sure. This is their backyard; it takes a little more time for me to get over here. It was a great race tonight with all of these guys. The racetrack was great. John Force and the PEAK Antifreeze and Coolant Chevy improved their performance sitting No. 11.  Tire smoke was the theme for the John Force Racing drivers in the third qualifying session. Brittany Force and the Monster Energy dragster coasted to a 9.214-second pass at 76.91 mph after smoking the tires at the starting line. In the final qualifying run of the weekend, Force handled her dragster to a solid 3.756-seconds at 331.04 mph, the third quickest run of the session. Force maintained the No. 1 qualifying spot off her track record 3.637-second pass at 335.32 mph from Friday night. Since crew chiefs Dave Grubnic and Mac Savage came on board in 2019, Force has qualified No. 1 at 20 of 42 races and has been either first or second in 24 of 42 (57.1 percent). In the 140 previous races, she was No. 1 only 10 times (7.1 percent of the time). “This Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team made some good passes. Even with testing early in the week, I feel like that helped us. We laid some pretty good runs, especially that 3.637 from last night that grabbed us the No. 1 and set us up a good ladder going into race day,” said Force who will face-off with We ran right on our number in that last go. Hight, who secured the No. 1 position with Friday night’s 3.879-second pass at 331.94 mph, improved Saturday afternoon with an impressive 3.882-second pass at 331.94 mph. “I’m pretty excited, this is our first race with four qualifying runs, which I want to thank the Texas Motorplex for that, four runs is huge. This AAA Chevrolet we were low ET three of the four runs. That gives you a lot of confidence going into Sunday,” said Hight who will race Jeff Arend in the first round of eliminations. “We’ve dug ourselves a hole in the points and we need to win if we want to win a fourth championship this year. We’ve had some performance but no consistency, but Jimmy and Chris, they haven’t forgotten how to race, so I’m excited with the consistency we’ve been showing, I screwed it up in St. Louis so we may have been able to put it together sooner but can’t go back, just have to keep moving our way forward. But I’m excited, I’m excited to get to race day. We haven’t had that many No. 1 qualifiers this year and that’s kind of rare for our team.” A tough bout of qualifying continued for John Force and the PEAK Chevrolet team in the heat of their third qualifying go. Sitting No. 11, Force’s run was nearly identical to Hight’s, driving into tire smoke at 330 feet for a 4.702-second pass at 173.49 mph. Now No. 13 from his Friday evening 4.122-second pass, Force would improve his performance drastically with a 3.927-second pass 325.30 mph but would only be edged back into the No. 11 spot to race against Alexis DeJoria Sunday morning. “After last night, today was definitely better. Those PEAK guys, Danny Hood, Tim Fabrisi, they worked hard and worked late last night getting this car ready for today,” Force said. “We had issues early but so did everyone else and we made a solid pass that in Q4. So we’ll just see how tomorrow goes. I know it’s probably going to be exciting, just like this whole week has been here with Billy Meyer at his Texas Motorplex. “We had a strategy of staying aggressive to gain as many points as possible in the TaxSlayer Chevrolet today, but also being smooth and taking care of our equipment so that we could advance to the next round in the NASCAR Playoffs. We came close. We ended up 15 points shy of advancing. We started the race with a loose-handling Chevy but adjustments during pit stops really helped, and we were in position to earn much-needed stage points at the end of Stage 2. At the start of the final stage, I misinterpreted the rule for restarts and pulled out of line too early. We were issued a pass-through penalty that ultimately set us back and made us come from behind. I was just trying to get all I could. My crew chief, Andy Street, made a great call to take four tires at the end and give us a fighting chance. We raced our way up to eighth, but it just wasn’t enough to advance in the NASCAR Playoffs. I’m really proud of everybody from RCR and ECR. We have something to build off, and a lot of good notes for next season. I’ve learned a lot this year in the No. 2 Chevy.” -Myatt Snider

ALTON, Va. (Oct. 9, 2021) – Corvette Racing’s Nick Tandy and Tommy Milner took their third straight victory in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship by winning the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR on Saturday as the late-season roll continues for the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R. Tandy went from third to first in the span of a contact-filled, half-lap with 50 minutes to go for the winning move. Saturday’s victory goes along with the triumphs at Laguna Seca and Long Beach for the No. 4 Corvette C8.R. Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor, leaders in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) Drivers Championship, finished second in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette. They only need to start the 10-hour Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta to wrap up their second straight title and another Manufacturers Championship for Chevorlet. Saturday’s race was full of momentum changes and strategies – all on NBC’s national television audience. Taylor led from the start, overtaking pole-sitter Milner into the first corner. The two Corvettes stretched out their lead over third-place Cooper MacNeil to around 35 seconds before Milner made the first Corvette pit stop 28 minutes into the race for fuel, Michelin tires and a driver change to Tandy. That came in response to a full-service stop for the No. 79 10 minutes earlier, and the combo of the No. 4 Corvette’s pace and a quick stop meant Tandy was clear in second place by 40 seconds. The No. 4 Corvette inherited the lead on a slow stop for the No. 3 C8.R team 53 minutes into the race. Taylor led by more than a minute, but the pit stop misstep relegated Garcia to second but still clear of Kevin Estre in the No. 79. The race’s lone full-course caution came near the halfway point and shifted the strategy fortunes. Tandy stopped for fuel and tires, the earlier stop allowing the No. 4 team to perform a tire change while refueling the Corvette. Garcia got tires only after barely 20 minutes of green flag running. The restart with 66 minutes left saw the three GTLM contenders in a line. Estre shoved Tandy out of the way for second place with about 50 minutes left and did the same to Garcia – still on older tires – shortly thereafter. The battle between the No. 3 Corvette and the 79 allowed Tandy to catch back up to the lead pair. He got by Garcia during the 3 vs. 79 fight and stuffed the No. 4 Corvette to the inside at Turn 12 leading on to the backstretch to take the lead. Corvette Racing will close the 2021 season at Petit Le Mans from Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on Saturday, November 13.

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – GTLM RACE WINNER: “What a great win. I got a pretty poor start and was in the wrong engine mode. That was my fault and that let Jordan get pretty far up alongside me. With the conditions as they were, I just went a little bit wide in Turn One and that was the spot gone. From there it was just about trying to get back up to him and saving as much fuel as I could. When the Porsche came in so early there, the plan for us was to try to cover them on strategy in case a yellow came out. Today we definitely needed a bit of luck and got that. We also had this guy next to me (Nick Tandy) in the car at the end. He did an absolutely incredible job. He got raced really hard and raced back pretty hard for a pretty good show! I’m super happy for our whole team – another win for the 4 Corvette. It’s another 1-2 for Corvette Racing. It definitely didn’t look like was going to go that way for us, but a lot of hard work, good racing and here we are 1-2 again. It feels great, feels good for the team and I’m happy to get one of these Michelin Man trophies.”EMOTION BEHIND THE WIN AND WINNING THREE IN A ROW: “Nick and I were talking after Lime Rock. We felt like we had a car that was fast and a crew that was having good pit stops. We were just missing the last little piece. Sometimes it’s luck and sometimes it’s the little mistakes that we all make. I will say that for the whole year the team has been really good on our side. We had a super-fast car at Daytona. Sebring and other things didn’t go our way. It was frustrating for us and frustrating for our crew guys. It was a time for everyone on our side to buckle down and get every last little detail just right so we get these wins. I’m a firm believer of making your own luck. From our side, we made another conscious effort to make sure we were doing everything we could possibly could to get the result. We had the speed and all the ingredients to get these wins; it just wasn’t getting put together. When you make that extra effort and get the results, it’s one of those things that encourages that same intensity, same drive and same passion that got us three wins. Today was about making sure we continued down that path. To be honest, we got a little bit lucky today. My start was pretty poor and by trying to cover the Porsche on their pit strategy, that put us in a bad spot if the race had gone green the whole way. Obviously it didn’t but were still behind the eight-ball a little bit by having to cover them. Today we had the luck plus the right guy in the car at the right time. It’s worked for us. We’re making our own luck but also working super hard for it.”

NICK TANDY, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – GTLM RACE WINNER: “I’ve got to give full credit to Corvette Racing, Chevrolet and the guys and girls on this team. It started with Tommy putting it on pole and Jordan again on the front row for Corvette Racing. From the start, we split strategies and nailed all the stops on the strategy from there. The car was bullet-proof. Hats off to everyone on the team.”FIGHT FOR THE WIN: “It was an interesting one. There was about an hour-and-15 minutes to go with the three GTLM cars in a line. I especially know how fast that RSR should be around this circuit because I sat in it last year. If there’s a circuit you want to take that car to, it’s this place. With the change in the BoP from last year, we knew they could have walked away with this race. Kevin (Estre) is a good friend of mine. I respect him a lot and he’s a great driver. When you start smashing into cars in front of you when you have no real room or right to put your car where he did… I think what happened was karma or what-not. It was a good race but it’s always great to win the races when you really shouldn’t. It was fun out there. I always enjoy a good fight. When you race people like Kevin, Antonio (Garcia), Tommy and Jordan (Taylor), there’s always going to be a good fight. We enjoyed it, and we got the better of it. I’m really glad the Corvette was up to the job and kept the wheels on it.”CONCERNED ABOUT A PUNCTURE FROM TURN FOUR CONTACT? “Yes. The first real contact was a big hit on the wheel. I checked the steering but it was straight. You never know if you’re going to get a puncture or knock off the splitter. I saw where we lost some aero parts at the front. You never really know so you just hope. But what I do know is how strong are these Corvette Racing C8.Rs – from experience in the past! It was nerve-wracking but that is IMSA GTLM racing.”RANKING BATTLES? “Personally, it was probably one of the best because we had such a performance deficit. The Porsche couldn’t stretch its legs because it was stuck behind the Corvettes. We just managed to keep him there. We’ve said before that it only takes two cars to make a good race. So when you have three out there at the front fighting for the overall win… for us it makes no difference whether we’re fighting for second or third in a class with eight cars in the class or whether it’s the Corvette and Corvette in the third-fastest class. I hope the interest in this race and the interest in GT racing around this weekend made it a good show.”

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – SECOND IN GTLM: “It was an up-and-down race that ended in another Corvette 1-2. It looked good for us on the 3 car side for much of the race until the yellow came out. That really gave the tire advantage back to Nick as well the 79 since they both were on a three-stop strategy. It made it difficult to defend from the Porsche, and to be honest it wasn’t a clean overtake. In the end, we ended with a 1-2 team finish. Sure we would have liked to be back on the top step but it didn’t work out. We’ll try to get back there at Atlanta.”

JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – SECOND IN GTLM: “It’s not the way we wanted to end the day after being in control of it  from the green flag through the first half of the race on the two-stop strategy. Once the yellow came out, it kind of mixed things up. It was a tough fight all the way to the end. It was a good job by the 4 Corvette and a tough fight with the 79 there in the middle. Good job today for Corvette Racing with another 1-2. We can go to Petit Le Mans now and race as hard as we want to for a win there.”

The field for the sport’s most prestigious event will be completed on Saturday following Last Chance Showdowns.

Wight crossed the finish line with fellow podium drivers Mat Williamson, the defending Super DIRTcar Series champion, and young gun Tyler Dippel, who had an impressive showing at Bristol Motor Speedway in April. Stewart Friesen picked up the $1,000 win in Tripe 25 two over the Baldwinvsille Bandit Jimmy Phelps who failed to steal the win on the final restart. Max McLaughlin drove away from the competition in Triple 25 three, including the second-place finisher and seven-time Super DIRTcar Series champion Matt Sheppard. 

Here’s how the three Triple 25s played out at Oswego Speedway:

Heat 1

Peter Britten and Larry Wight brought the field to green to kick off the first Triple 25. Britten had difficulty holding off Wight from passing on the inside and lost the initial lead. Britten was saved, however, by a red flag involving Robbie Johnston, Jeff Taylor, and Brian Whittemore. Johnston and Whittemore were able to pull away but Taylor’s #11 had to go off the track on a hook. 

When the field refired, Wight went to the top and cleared Britten, who fell back in the field. Britten, knowing he is locked into the Billy Whittaker Cars 200 on the merrit of his first SRI Performance Pole Award, pulled off to save the car. Meanwhile, Wight stretched out his Big Block’s legs and stayed out front for the win. 

“I knew Britten was going to take the bottom on the next restart,” Wight said. “He left that top wide open, I set it in there and the car curled around beautifully and I just drove away.

“Luckily my car is good enough and I could hunt around the holes. The car is fast everywhere. This car is just phenomenal to drive. Brandon and Jake did an amazing job putting it together. Now our shock and coil programs are what made this car fast. Right now all together. As long as we don’t get too greedy with it and make some minor adjustments, we’ll let the 200 play out.”

Mat Williamson, from St. Catharines, ON, finished second and is now set to defend his 2019 NAPA Super DIRT Week Billy Whittaker Cars 200 win. Tyler Dippel moved up two spots to finish third after a stellar qualifying effort by the young driver. Anthony Perrego finished fourth and if this had been a 200-lap race, Wight and Williamson would have had company at the front. 

Also transferring was Ryan Godown who picked up seven positions in the 25-lap race. Carey Terrance started sixth and finished six. But that’s not the whole story. Terrance was determined to mix it up with the leaders and made it up to second mid-race. Unfortunately, he lost ground on a restart and fell back to his starting position of sixth. Mike Gular, from Harleysville, PA, picked up eight positions to finish seventh for a transfer. 

And finally, Brett The Jet Hearn, winner of 900+ dirt Modified races and six-time Billy Whittaker Cars 200 winner, finished eighth for the final transfer position. 

Heat 2

Stewart Friesen and Jimmy Phelps have been battling against each other for almost 20 years. The two veteran wheelmen lined up side-by-side and brought the second 25-lap Heat to green. Phelps looked to be running away with the money in the early going by running the top side and gapping second-place Friesen. On Lap 10, Friesen found some bite on the bottom line and passed the HBR #98H out of Turn 4 and under Dave Farney’s flagstand. 

“It’s a challenging race track,” Friesen said. “We’re using the whole thing out there. I was able to roll Jimmy [Phelps] on the bottom. Then we found a decent line sliding three and four. Then I moved up to the top in one and two and really got going.”

The race was decided by a late-race restart and Friesen was determined to get a clean start. 

“I try not to play games on the restart,” he said. ”I don’t leave gaps. It just causes accidents at the back of the pack. I was just trying to get a clean restart on the top. I hit my line and it was good.”

Transfer driver and Series rookie Tim Sears Jr. finished third and was not letting the leaders out of his sight. The #83X proved he will be a force in the 200. 

Tim Fuller made up the most ground out of anyone finishing third from his 11th place starting spot. Fuller made a mega-move around the outside on a late-race restart to put himself up to fourth. Marc Johnson kept his consistent week going with a fifth-place finish to transfer. 

Johns Hohenforst took a nasty barrel at Brewerton Speedway last Tuesday (Oct. 5). Not only did he miraculously rebuild the car but he made it fast. Hohenforst drove up from 13th to finish sixth for the transfer. 

Jordan McCreadie’s luck turned around despite an early flat tire. The Flack’s Hi-Rise Concrete Restoration #28 team got him back on track and he was good enough to finish seventh to make the Billy Whittaker Cars 200 field. Tom Sears Jr. finished eighth knocking Jack Lehner out of a transfer spot in the late stages. 

Heat 3

The Friday Night Lights were full power but Max McLaughlin, from Mooresville, NC, was simply lights out. He immediately built a considerable lead while Matt Sheppard chased. Then, McLaughlin did something most drivers don’t: He held “seven-time” off for the $4,000 payday. 

“We were pretty good,” McLaughlin said of his winning Carl Meyers #32C. “The track is wild and a little rough. But we have a really fast race car so it just took me a little bit to figure out my line. If it wasn’t for caution flags we would have lapped up to the top-five.”

Sixth-place starter Chris Hile, from Syracuse, NY, drove his #5H to finish on the final podium step. Demetrios Drellos bounced back from a middling Time Trial by passing eight cars on his way to a fourth-place finish and a solid starting spot for the Billy Whittaker Cars 200. 

The Flying Squirrel, Rocky Warner fell two spots from his starting position but managed to hold onto fifth to transfer. 

Micahel Maresca, in the #7MM, advanced fourth spots to finish sixth. Orange County Speedway star Billy VanInwegen finished seventh. Kevin Root started eighth and finished eighth, battling hard to make it into his first Billy Whittaker Cars 200.

SALUTE TO THE TROOPS DIRTcar 358 MODIFIED SERIES

The tease of Saturday’s DIRTcar 358 Modified Salute to the Troops 150 came in threefold Friday night at Oswego Speedway.

Three 20-lap Qualifying Heats for the 74 cars entered in the division gave drivers and fans a taste of what they can expect from the 150-lap main event and guaranteed 24 more drivers a starting position in it.

After claiming the SRI Performance Pole Award and setting a new track record for the 358 Modifieds at Oswego Speedway Thursday afternoon, Billy Dunn backed that up by winning the first Heat. In the second Heat, seven-time Salute to the Troops champion Billy Decker became the first driver this week to deny Mat Williamson a win. And in the final Heat, Tim Sears, Jr. set a blistering pace to win by 2.5 seconds. All three took home a $1,000 check for the victory.

The three winners had already locked themselves into Saturday night’s $20,000-to-win Salute to the Troops 150, through Thursday’s Time Trials, along with Williamson, Stewart Friesen and Rob Bellinger. Joining them now as a locked-in driver are the likes of Pat Ward, Larry Wight, Peter Britten, Ronnie Davis and more.

Here is how the three Heats played out:

Heat 1
When the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds thundered into Turn 1 of Oswego Speedway as a group for the first time in two years, Pat Ward was granted an opening. Stewart Friesen slipped from his outside pole position, allowing Ward to dart past him from fourth and then make a run at Dunn for the lead. Right as he snuck past Dunn for the top spot, the caution flew for an accident in Turn 4 that ended Jordan McCreadie and Mike Bruce’s night.

Ward held the lead for the next two laps before another caution hindered this chance at building momentum. When the race commenced, Dunn moved high and found the bite he needed to get back around Ward for the lead on Lap 5. From there, Dunn comfortably held the lead for the next 14 circuits while the last one made him sweat.

While he led, Larry Wight became the show in the final half of the race. He spent most of his time trying to find his way around Friesen for fourth, using any lane he can to get around the NASCAR Truck Series star. With four laps to go, Wight moved high just in time. Lap cars blocked the low and middle lanes, allowing Wight to rocket around the outside of Friesen, Tim Fuller and Ward to go from fifth to second in one corner.

With three laps to go there was about a second and a half gap between him and Dunn. With two to go, it was down to half a second. On the final lap, he charged to the outside of Dunn but the red #49 had enough speed to hold of Wight for the win.

“Man, the track changed a lot in those 20 laps,” Dunn said. “I lost the lead early and had to fight to get it back and was able to hold on (for the win)… It takes me about a lap to get wound up in that W16 motor, but, man, once I got it going it was really good. The track seemed to get rougher, rougher and rougher. I was just trying to be really easy in lap traffic. I know I was losing speed to the cars behind me, but I just wanted to get to the end and stay out front.”

Heat 2
With Mat Williamson winning every race he’s entered in the past seven days, the question lingered if anyone could beat. Billy Decker, the defending Salute to the Troops 150 champion, answered with “yes.”

Williamson launched ahead of the field at the start of the second Heat and held command out front for the first eight laps before the caution came out for a two-car accident in Turn 2. When the race went back green for the final 12 laps, Decker looked like his teammate Larry Wight, ripping the high side of the 5/8-mile track. In doing so, he found himself to the outside of Williamson and in the lead shortly after.

Once he cleared the defending Billy Whittaker Cars 200 winner for the lead on Lap 9, Decker set sail and pulled away to a 1.6-second win over Williamson.

“He (Williamson) raced me very respectfully,” Decker said. “The Wholesaler (#91) cars was really good. Took a few laps to get the tires where they belonged and when they took off, they took off. It was fun at that stage.”

Heat 3
Tim Sears, Jr. has been on the verge of a DIRTcar 358 Modified all week long, nearly stealing the victory from Williamson at Weedsport Speedway on Wednesday and starting up front at Brewerton Speedway on Thursday before fading back. But on Friday night at Oswego Speedway, Sears was in a class of his own.

When the green flag hit the air for the third and final Heat of the night, Sears entered a new dimension when he pushed the throttle. His #62X rocketed ahead of the field and he gapped second-place Dave Marcuccilli by half a second in the first lap.

He caught the rear of the field by the halfway point of the race and even that couldn’t slow his momentum.

Behind him, Peter Britten had his own star moment on the initial start, going from sixth to third in the first lap. However, he couldn’t make any further ground after that. Sears powered to a more than two-second win over Marcuccilli, who finished second with Britten behind him in third.

“I wanted to get to lap traffic to see how we race,” Sears said. “This car has been good all year. Mullen and the guys at the shop, they prepare a great race car. I mean, every time we go on the race track this thing is ready. I couldn’t do it without all of them.”

DIRTcar SPORTSMAN CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE 75

Five Heat Races, five different winners. Another 20 drivers have punched their tickets into Sunday’s DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Chevy Performance 75 at Oswego Speedway.

The remaining 76 drivers will lineup Saturday afternoon to compete in one of three Last Chance Showdown events, vying for another six available starting spots in the $4,000-to-win NAPA Super DIRT Week finale.

The three LCS events will kick off the on-track action Saturday at 4pm, preceding the 358 Modified and Super DIRTcar Series LCS events.

Heat Race 1 – Mike Fowler

Now sitting on the front row of the first Heat Race with Robert Bublak to his outside, Mike Fowler knew he had a great chance to get his ticket punched into the big show on Sunday.

Chevy Performance 75 polesitter Chad Edwards chose not to participate in the event, while fellow locked-in driver Chris Mackey elected to start at the tail. This put Fowler on the pole, where he took the green and held off the field for all 15 laps to pick up the win and a spot in Sunday’s Feature.

“It’s kind of the shorter of the long way to do it,” Fowler said. “We really came here with our mind set on trying to lock-in through time trials, but winning a Heat Race is just as good. You get some extra laps on the car and really figure out what the car’s really gonna want.”

Heat Race 2 – Dalton Rombough

Chevy Performance 75 outside polesitter Andrew Buff also chose not to participate in his Heat Race, which put Dalton Rombough on the point for the 15-lap battle.

Rombough grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and held strong, leading every lap on his way to Victory Lane. He said the longer 75-lap event won’t be a bother to him come Sunday, as he’s taken a liking to the distance challenges.

“I actually like the longer races,” Rombough said. “It’s more consistent, and we’ll have to see what the track does. I really don’t know quite what we’re gonna do just yet.”

Heat Race 3 – Brian Calabrese

Ready for the initial start, now sitting P3 after polesitter Matt Janczuk’s decision to park it for the night, Brian Calabrese stared down the leader’s rear bumper in front of him, still knowing he’d have to at least keep the spot to advance to Sunday’s finale.

Not only did he keep the transfer spot, he improved on it, passing new polesitter Ryan Dolbear in the opening laps and Matt Guererri for the lead on Lap 12, using the very bottom lane to make the passes and drive to victory.

“The experience over the years… I’ve got a lot of good people telling me in my ear to keep it straight, this and that. We’re finally starting to calm down a little bit and show what we’ve learned over the years,” Calabrese said.

Heat Race 4 – David Rogers

Putting on a dominant display of driving ability, David Rogers joined Mike Fowler and Dalton Rombough as the only drivers to win their Heat Race and lead every lap Friday night.

Rogers took command at the drop of the green and led the caution-spotted Feature green-to-checkered to pick up the win and earn himself a spot in the big dance on Sunday.

“I’m ecstatic,” Rogers said. “To come here with 101 cars and do this… This is really the first Super DIRT Week we’ve actually got to run. We’ve been here before, but it just wasn’t good. But, here we are.”

Heat Race 5 – Mike Bruno

Scheduled to start 10th before the green flag dropped, Mike Bruno drove his #22B all the way to the front in 13 laps to pick up the Heat Race win.

It was one of the more challenging journeys to the front – Bruno had to deal with multiple caution flags and slower cars in his way to get it done.

“We got behind, and we had good practice laps, but we went the wrong way for the gears for the time trials,” Bruno said. “We knew we had a good piece, we just had to get through to get to the Heat Races and basically get up on the wheel.”

DIRTcar PRO STOCK 50

Nick Stone and Chad Jeseo used a similar strategy to get a leg up on their competition. The two Capital Region drivers chose the outside line in their 10 lap Twin 20 Heat Races, leading them to Victory Lane Friday night at Oswego Speedway.

The wins back up strong qualifying runs by both drivers. Jeseo starts on the outside pole in Sunday’s DIRTcar Pro Stock 50, while Stone starts third. All 31 cars will start the main event.

Heat 1

Nick Stone and Luke Horning have developed a rivalry over the past few seasons, as the two battled countless times in Pro Stock competition across the Capital Region.

Friday night at Oswego Speedway was no different, as they brought the first Pro Stock Heat Race to green.

Both drivers thundered off Turn 2 side-by-side, each of them nosing out ahead of each other on the backstretch. Horning would lead Stone by inches when they completed Lap 1, but it was the final time he’d be out front.

Stone’s momentum on the outside carried him the lead on Lap 2, and two laps later, the “Manimal” started pulling away from Horning.

The Rotterdam, NY driver never looked back, leading the final nine laps to grab the Heat Race win.

Stone stated the momentum on the outside gave him the ability to stay smooth throughout the race.

“The outside starting position helped me find the outside groove,” Stone said. “I knew once I got a rhythm up there, as long as I didn’t let Luke slide me, I thought we were alright. A little bumpy out there, so I was a little iffy, but once it got rolling, it was going good.”

Horning settled for second, while Rich Crane, Chucky Dumblewski, and Chris Crane rounded out the top five.

Heat 2

Chad Jeseo watched Nick Stone in Heat Race 1, helping him decide what line to run Heat Race 2.

The Averill Park, NY driver, started on the pole, but it wasn’t long until he swung to the top, taking the advantage he needed to pull away.

Jeseo was unchallenged in the 10 lap Heat Race, including a restart where he drove away on the outside.

“I went to watch the first Heat and seen Nick take advantage of the top there,” Jeseo said. “So, I said, ‘Why not?’ I went out and tried it. It seemed really good.

“What an absolute awesome facility it is here today. The track is super racy. It’s super-fast. It’s a good track [Friday].”

While “Bad Chad” was out front alone, Josh Coonradt and Jason Casey waged war for the runner-up spot.

Coonradt, the 2019 Pro Stock 50 winner, tried for two laps to get by Casey before pulling a slingshot move off Turn 2 to pass him for second with three laps to go.

The West Milton, NY driver, held on to the runner-up spot, while Jason Casey finished third. Jason Meltz crossed the line fourth, and Kim Duell was fifth.

Madsen & Tony Stewart Racing #14 Win First Race Back After Eight-Week HiatusPORT ROYAL, PA – October 9, 2021 – The Nittany Showdown at Port Royal Speedway kicked off with a bang on Friday night as fans witnessed the closest finish of 2021 for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.After an exciting 25-lap affair around The Speed Palace, it came down to a mere 0.081-seconds between Kerry Madsen’s Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing #14 and Lance Dewease’s Kreitz Racing #69K as the checkered flag flew.The win was especially sweet for Madsen, who returned to the seat of a Sprint Car for the first time in eight weeks since he went for a gnarly crash at the Knoxville Nationals in August. The Sydney, New South Wales gasser showed no signs of rust as he scored his third win of the season with The Greatest Show on Dirt.In his 799th career start, the win marked his 28th and moved him into sole possession of 22nd on the All-Time Wins List.”I can’t say enough about this Tony Stewart Racing team,” Madsen said in victory lane. “I was a little bit rusty to start the night, but they kept tuning on the car and got me more and more comfortable. I was really good early in the Feature and kind of protected more so in the second half. What a fantastic car, though.”Although Madsen led all 25 laps of Friday’s $10,000-to-win show, it was anything but a flag-to-flag route.At three different points, Anthony Macri, Logan Schuchart, and Donny Schatz all momentarily held the race lead, but none officially had the top spot at the start/finish line.Macri offered a brief challenge on the opening lap but slipped backward as Schuhcart came to life. The Hanover, PA native was poised to drive the Shark Racing, Drydene Performance Products #1S to the point on Lap 6 when chaos ensued. Trying to avoid a spinning lap car, Schuchart ran out of room between car and wall, thus colliding and knocking the front end out and ending his shot at the win.More drama followed when championship leader Brad Sweet bent a wheel and went to the work area while running third. He ultimately finished 14th in the Kasey Kahne Racing #49 and now leads Gravel by +112 points with six nights left.Madsen’s TSR teammate was next up to challenge. Schatz exchanged a handful of sliders aboard the Ford Performance, Carquest #15, but never quite had enough to assume full control over Madsen. He fell back to third with five to go and Lance Dewease came to life.The final restart with six laps left saw Madsen initially pull away from the #69K, but the PA Posse legend came to life as the flagman showed two to go. He chopped off a huge chunk of Madsen’s lead and was right on his back bumper at the white flag.Dewease wanted the low line but opted high where Madsen planned on forcing him. The duo raced off tour four as the crowd rose to their feet and witnessed a nail-biting finish with the #14 edging ahead by 0.081-seconds, the closest finish in the last 110 races.It wasn’t a win, but Fayetteville’s Lance Dewease collected milestones like his 75th career top-five and 150th top-10 with the Outlaws on Friday night by finishing second. He’ll return tomorrow with hopes of a 120th Port Royal Speedway win and 18th career Outlaws victory.”Our biggest problem is those double-file restarts because I would lose four spots and have to pass the same guys like five times,” Dewease said. “Our car was good, though. The tires never really fired back off on that last restart, but we gave it everything we had. He was down where I wanted to be, so you have to go where they’re not and we made it close. Tomorrow is a longer race, we’ll be there.”Polesitter Anthony Macri momentarily led early on but fell back to as far as fourth before recovering to a third-place finish. The Dillsburg, PA native now has five podiums through 40 starts with the World of Outlaws. The popular driver of the #39M has another chance at his career-first victory tomorrow with $15,000 on the line.”It would’ve been awesome to get that first career win, but we were the third-best car tonight,” Macri mentioned. “This was more of a normal Port Royal surface with the way the weather was and we need to adapt better to that. We’ll go to work and be better tomorrow.”After battling for the lead early on, Donny Schatz slipped back to finish fourth aboard the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing #15 and narrowed the gap between him and Carson Macedo for third in the championship. Edwards Bags Pole for Chevy Performance 75 at OswegoBuff, Janczuk, Fink, Stone and Mackey also locked into the big show Sunday OSWEGO, NY – Oct. 8, 2021 – With a lap of 22.206 around the clay-covered Oswego Speedway, Chad Edwards will bring the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Chevy Performance 75 to green from the pole on Sunday afternoon. The top-six fastest drivers from the 102-car field have automatically locked themselves into the Chevy Performance 75. Edwards, of Gloversville, NY, joins Andrew Buff, Matt Janczuk, Alan Fink, Nick Stone and Chris Mackey in the first three rows of the Feature starting grid for a shot at the $4,000 grand prize on Sunday. Everyone else will try and punch their ticket in through a Heat Race in the Friday Night Lights program. This is Edwards’ first career SRI Performance Pole Award at NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week. He becomes only the third driver in the last five editions of the event to win it, joining present-day DIRTcar Big Block Modified drivers Dave Marcuccilli and Kevin Root as polesitters at Oswego. “It hasn’t really hit me yet,” Edwards said. “Later on, when we’re having a few, we’ll probably enjoy it.” Later in the evening, Edwards “The Lunchbox” has the choice of competing in a 15-lap Heat Race, which will transfer another 20 cars into Sunday’s Feature. Since he’s already locked into the Feature, his participation isn’t required, but could serve as some extra practice time. “I’m not really sure yet,” Edwards said of his decision to race the Heat. “We’re probably gonna mount up some new tires and at least go out in the back maybe and try to break them in. Probably won’t be chancing it, to be honest.” Edwards also had the luck of the draw on his side, pill drawing in the first five spots of the Qualifying lineup earlier in the program. This put him among the first five cars on the track to take time, which gave him a fresher racetrack to work with. “On my quick lap, I kinda felt like I messed up in Turn 3,” Edwards said. “I got a little higher than the bottom groove and I think it helped roll through that corner smooth and straight.” Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Points champion of the division, Andrew Buff, clocked-in second-quick with a lap of 22.262. He collected the $250 Low-E Insulation Outside Pole Award and will take the green on Sunday alongside Edwards. “The lap was great,” said Buff, of Latham, NY. “Glad that we can start on the front row for this race on Sunday, it means a lot going into the race. Definitely a lot of stress off of the week we have.” Seventy-five trips around the five-eighths-mile oval is significantly more demanding than the 20-30-lap Features a typical Sportsman Modified driver tackles on any given weekend during the regular season. Buff finished fifth in the 2018 edition of the Chevy Performance 75, proving his capability to get it done in the big races. “You have to have a balanced racecar throughout the whole race,” Buff said. “Seventy-five laps is a long time, and the track’s definitely going to have a lot of changes in it. Lapped traffic’s going to come into play. Just as long as we keep our nose clean and stay up front, we’ll give it our best shot.” Matt Janczuk, of Oneida, NY, laid down a lap of 22.266 to secure his third-place spot on Sunday’s starting grid. After 0.003-second qualifying gap, C8.Rs start 1-2 overall in GT-only fight on NBC network

ALTON, Va. (Oct. 8, 2021) – Corvette Racing will line up 1-2 for the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR on Saturday with Tommy Milner leading the way following Friday’s qualifying session for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Virginia International Raceway. Milner, driving the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R, set a lap of 1:40.263 (117.410 mph) to best Corvette Racing teammate Jordan Taylor by a scant 0.003 seconds in the 15-minute session. The two Corvettes will lead the all-GT field at the start for the noon ET broadcast on the NBC network. It was the first pole for Milner this year and his first with Corvette Racing. He was the fastest qualifier at VIR in the 2004 GRAND-AM Rolex Series’ GT class. Milner and teammate Nick Tandy arrived at VIR with momentum following back-to-back wins at Laguna Seca and Long Beach. Their results have helped solidify Corvette Racing’s hold on the top two spots in the GTLM Drivers standings with two events to go. Taylor and Antonio Garcia enter Saturday leading the GT Le Mans (GTLM) Drivers Championship on the strength of four wins and six pole positions this year. The No. 3 Corvette C8.R duo also won five races in 2020 en route to the class title. All four Corvette drivers have tasted success at VIR. I got my first ever career pole position in GRAND-AM in 2004 at this racetrack. It feels fitting to get my first ALMS GT/GTLM pole here at VIR. I’m super happy. It’s good to have the pace in the Corvette. I’m happy for our guys as well. As satisfying as it is for me, it’s satisfying for them, as well. Qualifying doesn’t mean a ton, obviously; the race is what matters. To get these little battles and little victories means something for sure. It feels great.”MOMENTUM ON THE NO. 4 CORVETTE SIDE: “We need to keep doing what we’ve been doing… finding every last little bit out of the car, out ourselves and out of the pit stops. Even though there are three cars in the class, we are racing harder than we ever have against our teammates. It’s great racing. For the fans watching and at the track they can tell that when we are racing, we are racing these guys as hard as we ever have anyone else in our careers. Those guys are the best competition to have – the same car, the same equipment and same everything. To get these little victories means something.”RACE OUTLOOK: “The race is going to be very challenging for both our cars and the Porsche as well. Maybe not in qualifying speed, they aren’t the fastest. But if you look at practice times, they do seem to have the faster car. It will be a big challenge for both the Corvettes to maximize our strategy as best as we possibly can. We are racing our teammates, for sure, but we’ll our best to make sure a Corvette wins the race. If that means we have to work together a little bit at the start of the race to not fight ourselves too much in order to get as much as a gap as we can, then we’ll do that. I’ve never felt like I’ve had to race so hard in my life than racing our teammates this year. They have been super fast and competitive. It’s taken us a little bit to get to their level in some sense and get these wins. But I’m happy we’re there. I’m looking forward to the race.”RACING IN HIS HOME STATE: “VIR is essentially my home track. I live in northern Virginia and only four hours away from here. It’s a track where I’ve raced for many, many years and I’ve had success in the past. It’s one of your classic, all-time great sports car tracks in the world. It has some of the best people who run this racetrack as well, so it’s always a pleasure to be here. The fans are awesome. There are lots of campers, lots of families and lots of people having a good time. In years past, the race atmosphere has been great and the fan walk is always packed full of people. JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – QUALIFIED SECOND IN GTLM: “It was good. Three-thousandths of a second… I should have gone to the bathroom before qualifying. Actually I did but I should have gone again… maybe three times! It was good to get to show how close these cars are. Looking at the data, you can really see how close everything was. Second career Sportsman Series win for Tuttle in first SDW visit

CENTRAL SQUARE, NY – Oct. 7, 2021 – Escaping the clutches of lapped traffic with five laps to go, Cameron Tuttle had a comfortable lead, but was unaware of the furious drive coming from behind him.

Zach Sobotka, the 2021 Brewerton Speedway Sportsman Modified track champion from Parish, NY, cleared the pack of slower traffic in front of him and set his sights on leader Tuttle with just three circuits remaining. By the wave of the white flag, Sobotka had reeled Tuttle nearly all the way in and knew it was time to make a move.

“Coming out of Turn 2, I didn’t think I had enough for [Tuttle] to even get in there,” Sobotka said. “I just drove in wide-open pretty much going into 3.”

With one swift motion, Sobotka uncorked a slide job on Tuttle in Turns 3-4. But Tuttle held strong on the top side and denied the pass on corner exit, zooming by Sobotka with the lead and the $1,000 Hurricane Harvey 30 check at the stripe.

“That was the best race I’ve ever been in,” Tuttle said.

Getting into Turn 3 on the final lap, Tuttle had just realized Sobotka was coming.

“I thought I heard him coming out of Turn 2 on the last lap, and I didn’t see [Sobotka],” Tuttle said. “I was trying to look up at the [DIRTVision big screen] up there, but I couldn’t see him, so lap car around. Then, he dove under me, so I just kept it to the wood on the top and it was a drag race to the line.”

After battling hard to get on the podium in the final circuits, Sobotka had zero intentions of settling for second once he got out of lapped traffic.

“I was just trying to get to [Tuttle’s] bumper and see what I could make happen in Turns 3-4,” Sobotka said. “If I was a little bit closer, I might have been able to do it, but it was definitely close.”

Tuttle had led since the drop of the green and made quick work of traffic with a racecar setup to his liking. He lost barely any ground to the rest of the field in the first 20 laps, even with multiple lane changes to get through traffic.

“Going through lapped traffic, I could put it on the bottom, I could put it in the middle, and it would still get the drive off the corner that I needed,” Tuttle said. “Multiple lanes to race in made for a phenomenal race.”

The win was the second of his Sportsman Modified Series campaign this season after capturing the Western USA Region points title. He now turns his attention to qualifying for his first career Chevy Performance 75 appearance at Oswego Speedway on Friday.

“It’s a huge confidence booster going into tomorrow,” Tuttle said. “This is our first time going to Oswego, and we haven’t had time to travel around this year to actually see how the car’s gonna do against all these guys.”

Sobotka came home second after a drive from ninth to a near victory in the final corner. One more caution flag, and he said the finish could have been different.

“I saw the flagger give five-to-go and I was stuck behind a couple lap cars, and I split ‘em all three wide and kinda slid them,” Sobotka said. “I feel like I needed a caution really bad.”

Will Shields hung on for third while Brian Calabrese and Wednesday night’s winner Chris Mackey completed the top-five.
