Sheppard Makes it Three in a Row at East Bay Winternationals

Tampa, FL (February 11, 2022) – For the second night in a row Brandon Sheppard had to hold his breath on the final lap with a one-lap shootout to win night four of the 2022 Wrisco Industries Winternationals Presented by Lucas Oil at East Bay Raceway Park. It was Sheppard’s third straight win in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned event. Just one night earlier Sheppard survived contact with the fourth turn wall in holding off Earl Pearson Jr. and Kyle Bronson on the final lap. Friday Night Sheppard survived an attempted pass by Brandon Overton as a caution-flag came out as the two were headed to the checkers. The final restart with the white flag waving, Sheppard pulled away from Overton for his ninth career win at East Bay. Despite a heavily damaged race car Overton finished in second followed by Ashton Winger, Devin Moran, and Tim McCreadie.
The first 24 laps of the race were outstanding with three drivers trading the lead four times. Sheppard led the first 11 laps until Chase Junghans took over the point for one lap before Sheppard regained the lead on lap 13. Junghans was once again out front on lap 14 until lap 21. Overton took over lead on lap 22 for two laps, but Sheppard came to life again regaining the lead for good on lap 24. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 25th time in his career Sheppard came out of a terrific first half of the race to emerge victorious. “Our car was really good in the bottom at the beginning of the race. I went up to the top one time and I thought it was going to be treacherous running up there the whole time. Chase (Junghans) did a good job getting by me; it made me and Overton get up on the wheel. That was a heck of a race. Overton got by me too. Luckily in lapped traffic I was able to get back by them before the caution come out. It was a little slimy at the start, but the longer the race went the better the track got.” Overton led two laps during the mid-part of the race but came home in second to Sheppard. “Spencer (Hughes) had nowhere to go when the 10-car stuffed it in the fence. That was my only shot. Brandon wasn’t moving off the bottom. He got behind some lapped cars and went to the outside. Once I had clear vision there was a wreck in front of me. I am excited I got to race with him tonight. Every other night we have started up front and went straight backwards.”  Winger continued his impressive Georgia-Florida Speedweeks by rounding out the podium in third. “I can’t figure out how to go the first five to ten laps when I need to. I have to claw my way back and you drive by some really good cars and there’s Brandon Sheppard and Brandon Overton in front of you. It’s almost breathtaking. All Progressive American Flat Track Classes Slated for Springfield Mile Doubleheader on Labor Day Weekend

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 11, 2022) – Progressive American Flat Track is excited to announce that, for the first time in nearly a decade, Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER will compete alongside the Mission SuperTwins presented by S&Sand Mission Production Twins presented by Vance & Hines classes at the “World’s Fastest Mile” when the series arrives at the Illinois State Fairgrounds for the Springfield Mile I & II on September 3-4.

The Springfield Mile represents the crown jewel of the annual Progressive AFT calendar. That distinction has been earned not just by its long history and packed grandstands, but also by the incredible nature of the racing it reliably produces. Many of the most memorable races in series history have taken place at the Springfield Mile since the historic race was first held in 1937, including strategic showdowns, come-from-behind shockers, and underdog upsets. Schatz Beats Larson to Score 23rd Career DIRTcar Nationals Win at Volusia

BARBERVILLE, FL – February 10, 2022 – Pearl Jam once sang “I don’t know whether I’m the boxer or the bag,” and the same could be thought of Donny Schatz’s whirlwind 2021 season with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.

When it comes to 2022, though, there’s no denying which end of the spectrum the 10-time champion is starting on; he’s the boxer, and he’s ready to reclaim the world title that was bestowed upon him for years.

The box score will show Schatz led all 25 laps of Thursday’s season-opening affair at Volusia Speedway Park, but it was anything but a snoozer as he methodically maneuvered the challenging 1/2-mile and had to fend off reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson on the final restart.

Speaking on the surface, Schatz offered a one-liner to the roar of the crowd as he noted “I’d rather land on the other side of the fence than run second.” It almost felt like a rejuvenated Donny emerged from the cockpit, especially so with his personal favorite yellow scheme back on the #15.

In the end, Schatz’s symbolic win is like a light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to the tedious task of researching, developing, and mastering the Ford Performance Stewart 410 engine. After a rollercoaster process of getting this program off the ground, the FPS410 appears more reliable and more powerful than ever.

Another element of that is the off-season restructuring of Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing with Steve “Scuba” Swenson, Todd Devnich, and Ayrton Olson working on the Advance Auto Parts, Carquest Auto Parts, Sage Fruit #15 this season.

For the 44-year-old native of Fargo, ND, it was another night to pad the stats as he secured his 303rd career win with The Greatest Show on Dirt with 14 of those coming in World of Outlaws action and 24 in total under the DIRTcar Nationals banner.

“It all starts with night one and you really need to get that first win out of the way as soon as possible,” Schatz said after his fifth career season-opening victory. “Starting on the outside was a blessing for us with the way it rolled out. I didn’t want to run down in the rough stuff, but there at the end I knew I had to if I wanted to win.”

“It’s been a big change,” he detailed on the continued expansion at TSR. “These guys have never lost focus, though, and I think we’ve been showing how much better we are. One of the parts about this sport that still drives me is our partners, they’re always by our side win or lose. It makes it more special when we deliver the wins they deserve.”

Chasing Schatz to the stripe on Thursday night was Kyle Larson of Elk Grove, CA aboard Paul Silva’s Finley Farms, HendrickCars.com #57. The Hendrick Motorsports superstar advanced from sixth to second and cleared Schatz with a Lap 26 slidejob, but didn’t have enough to hold off the #15 as they raced wheel-to-wheel down the backstretch.

Finishing 1.542-seconds behind, the 24-time World of Outlaws winner earned his 16th runner-up result with the Series. It was the seventh time that Larson fell short against Schatz – more than double any other driver – and also meant his winless record at Volusia Speedway Park will extend at least one more race.

“It was elbows up,” Larson said with a smile. “I think growing up in California really paid off for me tonight because I’m used to seeing choppy tracks with ruts and being forced to get up on the wheel against some aggressive character. I three what I had at Donny, but I think we needed lap traffic maybe. It was a fun race, hopefully we can be one spot better tomorrow.”

Closing out the podium was Aaron Reutzel of Clute, TX, who put together a stellar season-opening bid for the Ridge & Son Racing #8 team. With a new Mobil1 partnership and the Toyota Racing Development 410 engine under the hood, A-Aron started the night in perfect fashion.

He earned Slick Woody’s QuickTime, won his NOS Energy Drink Heat Race, topped the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash, and ultimately finished third in the DIRTcar Nationals Feature.

“What a great start for this team,” Reutzel happily mentioned. “I knew Donny wasn’t going to duck in behind me, and that was my fear of losing the lead at the start. I thought I was coming at one point in lap traffic, but then I started fading as the fuel load fell off. Once Kyle got me it changed the race for us. We’ll take what we learned and hopefully get up there on top tomorrow.”

Rounding out the top-five was Big Game Motorsports pilot David Gravel in fourth and Dillsburg, PA’s Anthony Macri in fifth.

Finishing out the top-10 on Thursday night was Justin Peck & Buch Motorsports in sixth, Shark Racing’s Logan Schuchart in seventh, Clauson-Marshall Racing’s Tyler Courtney in eighth, James McFadden & Roth Motorsports in ninth, and Stenhouse Jr. / Marshall Racing’s Sheldon Haudenschild in tenth with KSE Hard Charger honors.

Sheppard Gets Second Straight Lucas Oil Victory at East Bay

Tampa, FL (February 10, 2022) – Brandon Sheppard escaped with a win on Thursday Night at East Bay Raceway Park as the 29-year-old Illinois driver nearly gave away a sure-fire victory when he got into the fourth turn wall heading to the white-flag. Sheppard recovered quickly enough to hold off Earl Pearson Jr. and Kyle Bronson who were bearing down on him. It was Sheppard’s second-straight win in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Wrisco Industries Winternationals Presented by Lucas Oil at “The Clay by the Bay.” Pearson recorded his best series finish of the campaign. Bronson charged from his 16th starting spot for the second night in a row as he came home in third after finishing in fourth on Wednesday Night. Pearson was 0.516 seconds behind the winner and Bronson was just 0.641 seconds behind Sheppard at the finish line in a close ending. Devin Moran crossed the line in fourth followed by Hudson O’Neal, who wound up fifth after starting 17th. Brandon Overton took the lead at the start of the 40-lap main event, and it looked like it was going to be his night again at East Bay as he and Pearson ran 1-2 for the first 20 laps of the race. Just past the halfway mark the complexion of the race changed for Overton as he saw Brian Shirley get by both him and Pearson to take over the lead on lap 21. One lap later Sheppard took over the point as Overton started to fade. A caution with two laps to go set up a green-white-checker finish which proved to be almost detrimental to Sheppard after the hitting the wall in turn four he stayed against the concrete for most of the front stretch, but he able to right the ship just in time. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 24th time in his career Sheppard felt relieved that the race was over. “I thought I gave that one away that was a crazy race for sure,” said Sheppard, who started eighth in the race. “I got rolling pretty good on the top there early in the race. As long as I was passing guys I was going to stay up there. I got the lead and my crew told me I was good to just stay up there so I just kept going.”  “I am just super thankful. We have had a really fast car all of Speedweeks, it’s finally starting to come together for us. I want to thank all of the fans. Hopefully, we put on a good show for them. We had a fast car there and we almost gave it away. But we ended up getting it done so that’s awesome and I am super-proud of my team. Hopefully, we can do it again tomorrow night.” Pearson driving the Jason Papich – owned team was not close enough to Sheppard when the leader bounced off the wall on the final lap coming up just short of his first series win since 2020. “I just run around the bottom. That’s where I usually like to race. I knew he (Sheppard) would be tough on the top there. He made a little of a mistake there which he usually doesn’t do. After that he didn’t make any more mistakes on that last lap. We got close to him. There is no doubt he’s tough here. Sheppard Super in Wednesday Night’s East Bay Winternationals Action

Tampa, FL (February 9, 2022) – Brandon Sheppard passed race leader Brandon Overton on lap 13 to win for the seventh time in his career at East Bay Raceway Park in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. On Wednesday night the four-time Dirt Track World Championship winner took night number two of the Wrisco Industries Winternationals Presented by Lucas Oil for his second series win of 2022.
Ashton Winger finished in second for his best career run in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series as he edged out Tyler Erb at the checkers. Erb was third at the end with Kyle Bronson rallying from a pit stop to finish fourth on his home track. Ricky Thornton Jr. rounded out the top five finishers.
Sheppard, who started on the pole led the first seven laps of the race until Overton, who started right behind Sheppard in the lineup, vaulted by Sheppard for the lead in traffic. A stretch of back-to-back cautions kept the field bunched up. On the restart after a lap nine caution, Overton held the point for three more circuits before Sheppard regained the lead on lap 13. From then on Sheppard ran virtually unchallenged to the finish. There was a caution with four laps remaining in the race that gave Sheppard’s competitors one last gasp, but he smoothly held his line to the checkers.
In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 23rd time in his racing career, Sheppard joined Overton and Devin Moran as two-time feature winners this year with the series. “I just hit my marks. He (Overton) passed me in lapped traffic, you don’t know when you’re leading whether to pull out and try to pass them guys or what to do. Luckily, he was missing the bottom there a little but getting into one and that let us get under him in one and two. So, after that I knew I had to hit my marks and the cautions fell when they needed to fall. The restarts here are really stressful, you don’t know where to take off at. I took off way too early that one time, I thought that was going to keep me from getting passed on the restart.”
“Thanks to Mark Richards and Steve Baker from Rocket Chassis for this great opportunity they gave me going on seven years ago now. It’s been a heck of a ride for us. I want to give a shoutout to Ron Slavic. He’s not here with us any longer. He was a huge supporter of ours, so we are thinking about him and his family; the Ramirez family as well.”
Winger, who has been fast all year finally put together a night topped off by his best career run with the series. “It feels like you lose about ten of ‘em before you get a chance to win one. I guess if you are going to run second it should be to a Brandon. Congrats to them guys. I know they worked hard, and their car is really good, they have a good program there. We were just a little off, I feel like I can’t fire off as good as I need to.”
Erb, who entered the week with four career wins at East Bay rounded out the podium. “Once you get to the cars that have the grasp on it here there wasn’t many options to move around. I got to second and I just had to try something on the restart. I went to the top and let Winger get by me.”

Xtreme Series at Little River Shifts to Two-Day Weekend at Lavonia

 LAVONIA, GA – Feb. 9, 2022 – Ongoing facility upgrades at Little River Speedway in Modoc, SC, will not be completed in time for the Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series’ visit on Feb. 26, forcing officials to cancel its appearance at the venue. The race will now be contested at Lavonia Speedway, making it a Feb. 25-26 doubleheader at the track, each for $5,000-to-win. The Series then closes the curtain on the 2021-22 campaign with a tripleheader weekend in South Carolina. Lake View Motor Speedway hosts on Thursday, March 24, followed by the two-day Rock Gault Memorial at Cherokee Speedway on Fri-Sat, March 25-26, co-sanctioned by the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. Tickets for the Rock Gault Memorial are on sale now at worldofoutlaws.com. Cadillac Racing will compete in IMSA’s new Grand Touring Prototype category in 2023
DETROIT (Feb. 9, 2022) – With Cadillac in the midst of defending its 2021 IMSA DPi Manufacturer Championship, the brand continues to prepare for its return to the world racing stage. Cadillac Design is in the process of shaping the forthcoming Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) race car and the future of Cadillac Racing.
Drawing from Cadillac’s previous racing success, the Cadillac GTP race car will be codeveloped by Cadillac Racing, Design and race car manufacturer Dallara. The prototype will feature a new Cadillac engine package in conjunction with the GTP common hybrid system.

“While the new race car will take into account IMSA and ACO regulations, Cadillac’s brand characteristics will be instantly recognizable, many of which are seen on our V-Series vehicles today,” said Chris Mikalauskas, lead exterior creative designer, Cadillac. “It will artistically combine form and function to influence the development of the forthcoming race car. Elements of Cadillac’s brand DNA, such as vertical lighting and floating blades, will be present throughout.”
Last year, Cadillac announced that it would compete in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and Automobile Club de l’Ouest Grand Touring Prototype category in 2023 with a fourth-generation Cadillac V-Series prototype. Notably, this will mark the brand’s return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans after 21 years.
“Cadillac has a long history of performance success on and off the track, which drives excitement for our fans and customers,” said Rory Harvey, vice president of Cadillac. “That excitement was never more evident than last year when we saw extraordinary demand for the V-Series Blackwings right after they were revealed.” 
Cadillac’s commitment to performance is embodied in the V-Series portfolio by incorporating technologies learned on the track into performance cars for the road. Its recent expansion includes the CT4-V and CT5-V sport sedans, the Escalade-V and the track-capable CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing.
The Cadillac Project GTP race car will be unveiled this summer, and make its debut in competition at the Rolex 24 At Daytona in January 2023.

Tampa, FL (February 8, 2022) – Due to constant rain during the morning and the forecasted rain for the remainder of the day, Tuesday’s event at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL has been cancelled. A full program is still scheduled for the remainder of the week, every night (Wednesday – Saturday), which includes Hot Laps, Allstar Performance Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, DirtonDirt.com Strawberry Dash-presented by Berry Barn, and the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series main event.

Team Chevy NHRA drivers prep for season-opening race

Test in the West this week an important step leading into annual trek to Pomona
DETROIT (Feb. 8, 2022) – Austin Prock has competed in three National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Camping World Drag Racing Series Top Fuel events since November 2019.
Is he a bit anxious heading into preseason testing Feb. 10-12 at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Arizona? “I couldn’t be more excited,” the 2019 NHRA Rookie of the Year said.
Prock returns to the circuit in the Montana Brand Rocky Mountain Twist Chevrolet dragster as a teammate to 2021 Top Fuel championship runner-up Brittany Force at John Force Racing. He filled in for Clay Milliken at Norwalk last season and drove in two races to start the 2020 season before the team shut down on-track operations because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I have sat out for two years, but the rust will come out quick. It’s like riding a bike,” said Prock, who notched his maiden Top Fuel win at Seattle in ’19. “At Phoenix, it’s about getting more comfortable, just getting everything ironed out so we can go out there Q1 (in the opener) and go low ET. This (car) is going to be in contention for wins every weekend.” The season begins Feb. 18-20 with the NHRA Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in California.
Prock, 26, will be backed by the experience of co-crew chiefs Joe Barlam and Rahn Tobler, who was enticed to come out of retirement to assist a family friend.  “I thought, ’how cool would it be to race with Austin.’ I’ve known him forever; I’ve known Jimmy (Prock, Austin’s father) for a long time. We’re very good friends on and off the track. I just thought it was a great fit.” Barlam, who was part of John Force’s BlueDEF PLATINUM Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car crew in 2021, characterizes Tobler as “an old-school racer with a lot of savvy.” He could be describing himself, too. “It’s going to be pretty exciting to see how this partnership grows,” said Force, who enters the season with 154 career Funny Car victories. He, Brittany Force in the Monster Energy/Flav-R-Pac Chevrolet dragster and Robert Hight driving the Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car will also make passes this weekend.
Chevrolet Pro Stock drivers, including reigning champion Greg Anderson, 2021 NHRA Rookie of the Year Dallas Glenn and championship runner-up Erica Enders, will share track time during the test. “You can’t give up thousandths (of a second) in this class, and if you don’t get in a car before Friday at Pomona, you’ll probably mess up on the driving end of it a little bit, give up thousandths and give up qualifying spots. So, this is a way to get the drivers prepared, the teams and the engines absolutely what we think will be perfect before we get to Pomona,” said Anderson, who drives the HendrickCars.com Camaro SS. 
The KB Racing team, which will support six full-season Pro Stock entries, made a few offseason car swaps. Glenn moves from the oldest model in the fleet to a newer Camaro SS.
“We have to get some runs on them. Kyle (Koretsky) and I are in the same cars, but we’ve made some engine changes – not major changes – but you have to go prove that out and find the right tune-ups,” said Anderson, who will be in pursuit of career win No. 100 at Pomona.

Crew chief David Grubnic and assistant crew chief Mac Savage will continue to tune 2017 Top Fuel world champion Brittany Force’s Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac dragster. In the 2022 season, Monster Energy and Flav-R-Pac Frozen Fruits and Vegetables will evenly split primary sponsorship duties, each with 11 events. Force wrapped up 2021 second in the points standings after chasing down a second championship until the final race of the season. In the process, Force captured a win alongside her father in Topeka, Kansas and secured a career best 12 No. 1 qualifiers.
President of John Force Racing and three-time Funny Car world champion Robert Hight will continue to drive the Automobile Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS with his tandem of crew chiefs Jimmy Prock and Chris Cunningham. The trio tallied two victories and two No. 1 qualifying positions to finish the 2021 season in eighth. Hight and the Auto Club Chevy will welcome associate sponsor Powers Solar Frames to the team for the 2022 season.
Austin Prock will enter his second full-time NHRA season in the driver’s seat of the Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist dragster with crew chiefs Joe Barlam and Rahn Tobler. In 2019, Prock earned his first career victory with at the Northwest Nationals, joining the list of only 10 previous rookies to win in their first season. Prock also became only the 13th rookie to qualify for the Countdown to the Championship and finished the season eighth in points.

Dennis Erb Jr. Ends Seven-Year Lucas Oil Series Drought with Win at East Bay

Tampa, FL (February 7, 2022) – Dennis Erb Jr. ended a seven-year winless streak with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series on Monday Night by winning the 30-lap Wrisco Industries Winternationals Presented by Lucas Oil main event at East Bay Raceway Park. Erb’s last Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and East Bay win both came in February of 2015 when he drove a C.J. Rayburn Race Cars entry. Erb recovered from a slow start in the feature as he faded to fifth after starting on the outside front row by taking the lead on lap 19 from Brandon Overton. Hudson O’Neal, the Monday Night winner a year ago at East Bay, finished in second followed by Tim McCreadie, Shane Clanton, and Stormy Scott. Overton took the lead at the start of the race with O’Neal and Devin Moran trailing. Moran vaulted by O’Neal taking second on lap four as he set his sights on Overton. Overton and Moran are the only two drivers to win more than once this year on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series tour. Suddenly Erb started to gain momentum after dropping to fifth; he stormed back to second on lap 11 and battled with Overton for the race lead. Erb grabbed the point on lap 19, a lead which he held to the finish but not without some tense moments. Overton, who fell from the lead started to make moves using the top line of the track. Overton passed O’Neal to regain the second position on lap 25, but just as Overton had Erb in his sights he smacked the turn two wall, ending his night. For the 49-year-old second-generation racer from Illinois, it was his ninth career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory and his seventh career win at East Bay. “It feels really good to get back to victory lane here. We have struggled here in the past for a while. We run pretty good here tonight. I fell back a little bit but then our car started working real good and I was battling for the lead. I can’t thank everybody enough for their support. I want to thank Mark Richards and Steve Baker for their help.” “To get back down here and pick up another win is just a really good feeling. I would like to dedicate this win to C.J. Rayburn. I ran many races in his cars down here, it hurts not having him here this year. This win tonight is for him. I just tried to hit my marks there at the end, I knew I had a strong field behind us. The longer the race went the better my car was, and I didn’t want to see the cautions there at the end. At least we were able to hang on there.”  O’Neal was able to close on Erb towards the end of the race but cautions toward the end of the race kept O’Neal behind Erb at the finish. “We will take a second from how our night started. We were able to get up there to Dennis a couple of times and then a caution would come out or lapped traffic was up there. So, we will give it another shot tomorrow. Congratulations to him (Erb), Heather and Dennis do a heck of a job, I am happy they got this one.” McCreadie, the defending series champion, rounded out the podium after starting in 11th. “The restarts were tough; my car didn’t have instant grip. So, the last little but of the race I just tried not to mess up. I messed up one lap and Devin (Moran) got by me, and he showed me where I should be doing the whole time as far as getting through one and two.”  The winner’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored McBride Mack, Vomac Truck Sales, Performance Rod and Custom, Keyser Manufacturing, VP Fuels, and Ideal Ready Mix. Completing the top ten were Ricky Thornton Jr., Devin Moran, Tyler Erb, Brandon Sheppard, and Jimmy Owens.

East Bay Raceway’s Wrisco Industries Winternationals Presented by Lucas Oil Next

Batavia, OH (February 7, 2022) – Teams will make the trek south to Tampa, Florida to East Bay Raceway Park for a thrilling week of racing at the “Clay by the Bay” for the Wrisco Industries 46th Annual East Bay Winternationals Presented by Lucas Oil.
The action starts off on Sunday with an open practice from 6:00pm – 9:00pm, with the pit gate scheduled to open at 2:00pm. Beginning Monday, February 7th and continuing through Saturday, February 12th the nation’s top dirt late model drivers will battle it out for nearly a quarter million dollars in prize money. The pit gate will close at 1:30PM ET and reopen at 2:00PM ET each race day with the general admission gate opening at 5:00PM ET
A full program is scheduled for six straight nights, which includes: Hot Laps, Allstar Performance Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, DirtonDirt.com Strawberry Dash-presented by Berry Barn, and the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series main event. Each day, the Drivers Meeting will take place at 5:00PM ET, followed by Hot Laps at 5:30PM ET. Saturday’s program begins with a Dirt Racing Outreach service at 3:30PM ET in the main grandstands near turn one.
The Ag Protect 1 Speedweeks bonus is still alive for Devin Moran. Any driver competing in all 14 scheduled Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series GA/FL Speedweeks events is eligible for the Ag Protect 1 bonus. Any one driver winning a minimum of eight (8) races during the January 27th – February 12th events will receive a $20,000 cash bonus. If a driver wins ten (10) of the 14 events, that driver will receive a $100,000 bonus.
Wrisco Industries will also offer additional cash awards to the top eight drivers based on points earned at the 14 GA/FL Speedweeks events. Drivers must have attempted to compete in all 14 events to be eligible for the Wrisco Winternationals points fund awards.

Burton Finishes 12th in the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum

By most accounts, the inaugural Busch Light Clash at the L.A. Coliseum, an all-new event for NASCAR, exceeded expectations. The same can be said about rookie Harrison Burton and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team.

Just to make the starting field for the 150-lap Clash, Burton had to be smart at times and aggressive at others. And he needed some luck.

But it all came together when it counted and he made the big show, where he drove from 22nd starting place to 12th at the checkered flag of the main event.

“We came a long way from our first practice to where we are now and we learned a lot about us and learned about our car as well,” Burton told reporters at the track. “I made a mistake and got into Ricky [Stenhouse Jr.]  

“I feel bad about that. That was just a plain mistake. I talked to him and he seemed good with it, so I appreciate that. Overall, it was just a crazy day.”

Like others he was impressed with the atmosphere at the Clash.  

“This is an amazing event, seeing all the fans and the National Anthem and the crowd going nuts was a really cool experience for me,” he said. “This is just my second race, but the first two times in Cup have been Talladega and now this event, so pretty cool event to do it and just proud to drive this 21 Wood Brothers Ford.”

It took a spirited drive – and a penalty on Ty Dillon – for Burton to make the starting field for the Clash.

Burton qualified an impressive 10th on Saturday, which put him starting third in his 25-lap heat race. He got up to second place in the early going but wound up eighth, which put him in the second of two 50-lap Last Chance Qualifying races.

It was there that Burton and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang began to show some real muscle.

Starting fifth, Burton ran in the top five for the first half of the race, which was relatively uneventful compared to the frenetic final laps.

He first moved into third place (which was key as the top three advance to the main event) with 20 laps to go. He dropped back on a couple of occasions then made a bold move from fifth place to first with just six laps to go.

Burton led Laps 45-47 but was spun from the top spot with three laps remaining.

He lined up seventh for a three-lap shootout and drove his way to fourth place at the finish, which wound up being just good enough to make the main after Dillon was disqualified by NASCAR for jumping the final restart.

The rookie driver said he was as aggressive as he needed to be.

“I race people hard and race them how they race me,” he said. “Aside from my mistake with [Stenhouse], I wouldn’t change anything I did today [Sunday]]. I’m just proud of that, and when I lay my head down tonight I can know that I did my best job.  

“We got used up. Our back bumper is pretty demolished, but that’s part of being a rookie, and everybody’s got to pay their dues. I understand that, but you can’t get pushed around either.

“There are too many people paying an exorbitant amount of money for me to be here and believe in me too much to just get pushed around.”

Burton said that while the race was a non-points exhibition, he believes it’s a good sign of things to come for him and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team. 

“I just think that we know we can do it,” he said. “There were times where we showed really good speed, and we’ve got to start somewhere.  

“It’s not a bad starting spot. We’ll keep going from here. I’ll keep getting better from here. Our team will get better from here…

“To finish 12th in our first race as a team isn’t bad.”
 
Eddie Wood said he was pleased with what he saw from Burton, crew chief Brian Wilson and the rest of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane crew. And he offered congratulations to Ford Performance and Team Penske for taking the checkered flag in the inaugural Clash at the Coliseum
 
“It was a good day all around,” Wood said. “Joey Logano and Team Penske put together a great win, and our team stepped it up to get into the race through the Last Chance Qualifier, which was a major accomplishment in itself.”
 
The 21 team’s performance at the Coliseum also had special meaning for the Wood family and the team’s fans as the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang carried a decal honoring the memory of Len Wood’s wife Nancy, who passed away Dec. 11, 2021, after a battle with cancer.
 
Mrs. Wood was an ardent supporter of the family race team and a beloved member of the NASCAR family.
 
The decal also will be on the No. 21 Mustang for the Daytona 500 on Feb. 20 and the first race at Martinsville Speedway, home track for the Wood Brothers.

“As a sports fan, it was very cool to race at a historic venue like the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and be a part of an innovative concept for NASCAR. From where we were last night after qualifying, it took a lot of crazy faith and a little prayer to put it all together today. The True Velocity Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was really fast in practice. I just struggled a little bit in qualifying, but I knew we would get in the race and be fine. The long run speed was there for us today. We were able to methodically work our way forward during the race. I’m disappointed that I couldn’t get those next two positions at the end. I really wanted to get there, but we would have needed a caution to make it happen. All-in-all, it was a great race, especially to recover from where we were last night. Thank you to everyone back home in Welcome, North Carolina for giving us fast cars. It was a good showing for us, and I’m excited to get this season started.”

“The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum exceeded expectations. The fans, the atmosphere, and the intensity of the race itself. Just the intensity of the field and the drivers – it was an incredible experience. Certainly, the obvious big bummer is breaking our transaxle doing something I probably didn’t even need to do. I had done a good job putting heat in the tires all weekend, but maybe I got too aggressive with it. I don’t know for sure. We’ll have to go back and look at it in the shop this week. We had one of the fastest cars on the race track. We were just riding and managing the gap back to Kyle Busch and trying to lap as many cars as we could so we wouldn’t have to worry about them later. But we never made it that far. It’s a tough lesson, but it’s a lesson we can learn from. Thankfully, this wasn’t a points-paying race. It still stings to give away a race like that from the lead, but we’ll be able to learn, grow from it and be even more ready than I thought would be possible rolling into Daytona.”

GOT ONE: Nicely Outruns Lee, Bags First UMP Modified

Speedweeks Victory at North FloridaHarris drives 14th-to-second, Lee retains points lead with podium LAKE CITY, FL – Feb. 5, 2022 – It wasn’t a question “if” Tyler Nicely would win a Feature during DIRTcar UMP Modified Speedweeks, so much as it was a matter of “when.” After some struggles at East Bay Raceway Park last week in the kickoff to the Speedweeks points championship, the 2020 Speedweeks champion and his crew regrouped earlier this week and didn’t have to wait long to see Victory Lane. Nicely pulled off a clean sweep of Saturday night at North Florida Speedway, setting fast time in Qualifying, winning his Heat Race and holding off the field on a green-and-white, checkered finish to score the win. “I feel like we should’ve had one over there at East Bay,” said Nicely, of Owensboro, KY. “Definitely should’ve been on the podium every night I feel like, so it feels good to get the first one off our back.” He won the race, but didn’t actually get the lead until the final laps. Outside polesitter Jason Garver swiped the lead from Nicely when the green dropped and held tight to it until Lucas Lee bested him on a Lap 7 restart. With Lee now in command of the field, Garver began to slip back into the clutches of Nicely. The two swapped the second and third spots around a few times over the next 15 laps – Nicely using his excellent acceleration out of Turn 2 to pass Garver back after he would drive around him on the top. Several caution periods littered the second half of the race, which eventually benefitted Nicely and his choice of Hoosier Racing Tire in the end. “We went with a little harder tire, and I feel like I got beat by that down at East Bay, so I didn’t want to try and go softer,” Nicely said. “I just needed about three laps to get going.” Then came a turning-point restart on Lap 17, when Nicely fired-off well and maintained pace with leader Lee. With Nicely inching Lee in every lap, Lee decided to stay about a half-groove higher than the very bottom of the track, where Nicely was running. Nicely saw this and took his shot with three-to-go, getting under him out of Turn 2, drawing even with Lee’s #12 into Turn 3 and prying the spot away from him at the exit of Turn 4. “On those restarts I’d get shuffled back, and finally we got a couple laps run and I was able to get underneath Lucas, and it was a good, clean race,” Nicely said. “I thought as long as I could keep my speed up, [I’d be fine],” Lee said. “I didn’t think he was coming. My [signal] guy gave me a lead, and then it closed-up, and I knew I was a sitting duck.” But that wasn’t the end of it. Christopher Rutherford spun in Turns 3-4 just as the leaders were coming for the checkers and the caution flag was thrown. This set up an intense green-and-white, checkered finish. “I was actually worried more about Lucas,” Nicely said of his thoughts under the yellow. “I just wanted to make sure I hung my car out enough just so he couldn’t get a run in the middle going into Turn 1 on the last lap.” But Nicely never flinched. He mashed the throttle on the start and sped away, opening a big gap behind him and securing the victory the next time by. Crossing in second was Jupiter, FL-driver Clay Harris. Sporting a brand-new Longhorn by Loenbro chassis in his first competitive night on the car, Harris put together an amazing drive from 14th to second in 25 laps. Before the final caution was thrown, Harris had been riding in third behind Lee. But that final restart gave him one last opportunity to pick up another spot, which he didn’t waste. “He messed-up a little bit coming out of Turn 2 and Turn 4 on the same lap,” Harris said. “I thought I was going to pass him, and then the white flag came out, and I wasn’t even gonna try him. Then, they threw the caution, and I knew it was game time.” New Speedweeks points leader Lucas Lee finished third after leading most of the race. Though he only lost ten points to Nicely in the standings, he said his tire choice cost him in the end. “It was a gamble anyway,” Lee said. “I think I found the rubber before they did, and my tire wasn’t going to be there at the end. When my [stick signals] closed-up, I knew [Nicely] had a [harder compound] on. LUCK NEVER HURTS: Zach Sobokta scores South of the Border Showdown $3K victory


The 2021 NAPA Super DIRT Week champion powered through a blown tire on the final lap to secure another resume-building victory

NICHOLS, SC – Feb. 6, 2022 – Zach Sobotka’s status in the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified division has skyrocketed in a matter of months. Along with his track championships and NAPA Super DIRT Week Chevrolet Performance 75 title last year, the Mexico, NY driver won big again Saturday night during the South of the Border Showdown finale.

The numbers in the box score will indicate an easy victory. The drama on the final lap said otherwise.

Coming out of Turn 4, with the double checkered flags waving, Sobotka’s right rear tire blew, throwing his car into the outside wall. The blood was in the water and the sharks behind him were full force after it. Determined to hold the win, Sobotka manhandled his machine down the front stretch and guided it to the $3,000 payday at Lake View Motor Speedway.

“I just don’t know what to say. I guess it does pay to have some good luck on your side,” Sobotka said. “The tire didn’t give any warning and then it just gave out. I just held the foot to the floor hoping that I would hang on as I didn’t know where anyone was behind me.”

Luck first found Sobotka before the 50-lap Feature when he drew the pole. Once he led the field to the green, his #38 car was fast out of the gate. He didn’t let early cautions and a red flag hinder his performance, maintaining the lead throughout the race. By the halfway point, slower traffic became an unwanted factor.

“It was a little hairy there, even though my car felt good in all lanes,” Sobotka said. “The bottom was preferred, and I just tried to hit my marks. I wasn’t sure if I wanted that yellow or not (on Lap 36). You’re in a groove and feeling comfortable. Even with slower cars sometimes you just don’t want to get out of a rhythm. But on the other hand, having an open track can be good, too.”

His car was superior to his rivals all night, allowing him to open another sizable lead. It was big enough for him to hold on at the fateful last corner to the finish.  Then, going over the scales also turned into a scare. The reading came up 2402 – two pounds over the legal limit.

“That got my attention, but with the fuel, we burned and also the tire I guess it wasn’t a surprise,” Sobotka added. “I’m just glad it all worked out. We had a tough first night but this made up for it and I can say this is one of my biggest wins.  I love this place and if they keep this event going, we will always be here until I move up to the Modifieds.”

While it wasn’t a victory, Chris Johnson’s second-place finish may feel like one. Brother of Big Block Modified star Marc Johnson, Chris rarely travels outside his Albany, NY area. But his 12-hour foray from home resulted in a head-turning performance and $1,500 payday.

“This feels really good,” Johnson said. “I mean, finishing second to Sobotka is nothing to be ashamed of and to travel outside our area and do well shows what kind of team we have put together. We just decided that we could do the trip and we gave it a shot. I’m glad we did. Having a run like this is special. It shows that we are getting there.”

Johnson admitted to not having much for Sobotka, he did have enough to keep Brian Calabrese and Joe Toth behind him.

“I was just concentrating on hitting my marks,” Johnson said. “Was the track a bit locked down and tricky? Yes. But it had speed and you really couldn’t make any mistakes.”

Toth won the battle against Calabrese to claim the final podium spot by the end of the race. The strong finish for the Newtown, PA driver came on just his fifth time running Hoosiers and first time running a DIRTcar sanctioned event.

“I’m happy with our results tonight, especially after struggling on the first night,” said Toth with a smile. “I just haven’t had the opportunity to come to New York, but we made the decision to come here, and we’re glad we did.”

Richard Murtaugh III backed up his fourth-place finish from Friday night’s opener with another fourth. This time, however, he did so by making a charge from the 18th starting position. Calabrese rounded out the top five.
