ROBERT HIGHT TAKES AUTO CLUB CHEVY TOVICTORY AT NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2022) – Robert Hight powered the Automobile Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS to his fifth win at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona on Sunday. His winning 3.861-second pass at 329.58 mph marked his 54th career victory. Making his return to the Top Fuel ranks, Austin Prock took the Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist dragster to a runner-up finish while Brittany Force and the Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team had a semifinal appearance. John Force and the PEAK / BlueDEF PLATINUM Chevrolet Camaro SS team had a short race day making a first-round exit.
With Jimmy Prock and Chris Cunningham at the helm of his Auto Club Chevrolet, Robert Hight was nearly perfect all weekend. Qualified in the No. 2 position coming into race day, Hight first laid down a 3.890-second pass at 328.86 mph to defeat Jason Rupert’s 4.361 at 231.02. In the second round, Hight would handle the Auto Club Chevy to a 3.893-second run at 331.20 mph for the win over Tony Juardo and his 8.647 at 84.98.
In the semifinals, Hight would match-up with Funny Car veteran Matt Hagan. The Auto Club Chevy had a clean pass of 3.861-seconds and 331.20 mph while Hagan would record only a 4.026 at 317.64. Hight would take on new team owner and reigning Funny Car world champion Ron Capps in the final round. Despite some extracurricular excitement on the starting line, Hight and Capps would have a stellar side-by-side drag race. Hight would edge Capps with a 3.861-second pass at 329.58 mph to Capps’ 3.882 at 333.82.
“It’s pretty tough,” said Hight about having to gain composure after his car body clipped the injector while being closed during pre-stage. “I saw Trevor (Huff) off to the side and he didn’t look like he was hurt. Trevor is all right. You’ve got a job to do so I just followed Jimmy (Prock) and he said to come on in and stage. You have to gather your thoughts. He put the body down and hooked the injector. Never had that happen. When the win light came on, the first thing I asked – I didn’t even care if we won – was whether he was okay.
“I knew it was going to be a great race against Ron Capps. If you looked at our last qualifying run last night, it was four thousandths apart (Capps in the other lane). It was neck and neck all day long. It’s one of many battles, the first race of the year. To get the job done is a big day. We’re going to have a lot more of those this year,” Hight said. “The guys have stayed focused, worked really hard. If you look at our runs in testing and our runs here, I think this Auto Club team has found it. I’m happy. We have more consistency than we had last year. I can only see it getting better.”
Austin Prock returned with a splash to the Top Fuel driver’s seat in the Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist dragster. Coming in as the No. 4 qualifier, Prock would face Clay Millican in the first round. The Montana Brand / RMT dragster would go 3.725-seconds at 333.08 mph while Millican’s dragster ran into trouble with a 4.350 at 170.08. In the second round, Prock would march with eight-time world champion Tony Schumacher. Prock and his Joe Barlam and Rahn Tobler led dragster would go 3.780-seconds at 329.10 while Schumacher coasted to 8.516 at 74.03.
The quarterfinal win would put Prock against teammate Brittany Force in the semifinals. While Force would have a solid 3.700 at 328.06, Prock would lay down his best run of the weekend at 3.687-seconds and 331.36 mph. In the finals, Prock would face another young Top Fuel standout in Justin Ashley. Nearly identical off the starting line, Prock (.049 reaction time) would fall short with a 3.713-second pass at 333 mph while Ashley (.050 reaction times) would run 3.694 at 314.53 for the win.
“Great start to the year. This Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist team got put together about 3-4 weeks ago and I thought we did an excellent job this weekend. No mistakes and tuners were learning every run and improving the car,” Prock said. “I’m really happy with how this year has started. It’s going to be a long, fun year and I’m really looking forward to it. It was cool to go against Brittany in the semis. From a team standpoint when you race each other in the semis it’s exciting because you know one of your cars is going to the final round. It was a great race. It was totally heads up, and a lot of fun. I’m glad I came out on the good side of it this time. Obviously, we wanted to get the win tonight, especially with my dad winning. It would have been awfully cool to have a family double up. I’m just happy to be back. This is my dream to drive this race car, and to be back and doing what I love again, it’s a lot of fun.”
Seeming to pick up right where they left off, Brittany Force and the Monster Energy team entered race day from No. 1 for the 33rd time in her career. The 2017 world champion had a stellar 3.699-second pass at 325.14 mph to defeat Ron August Jr. and his 3.909 at 319.07. The victory matched Force with rival Josh Hart in the second round. She would go 3.762 seconds at 322.27 mph bettering Hart’s 3.728 at 329.91 mph and setting Force up to face teammate Austin Prock in the semifinals.
It would be a tight side-by-side drag race for the two John Force Racing dragster. Force would come up short with a 3.700-second pass at 328.06 mph to Prock’s impressive 3.687 at 331.36.
“This Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team is off to a great start. We ran good during qualifying, got the number one qualifier, and made a semifinal round appearance,” Force said. “We have a great team around us with David Grubnic, Mac Savage and all our guys with two new additions. We’re working well together and I’m very proud of what we accomplished today. We have a really strong group and I feel positive going into this season. Great start and I’m excited to see what we can do in Phoenix next week. Coming into Pomona, I knew Austin and I were going to line up. His first season out we paired up first round of the opening race in Pomona, so I knew it was going to happen. I would have preferred for it to be in the finals but it’s just awesome to have him and his team out here. He’s pumped to be out here and it’s cool to have him in the lane next to me. If anyone’s going to beat me, I want it to be him.”
John Force has only qualified in the No. 16 position a handful of times, and for the first time, he matched with a first-round loss. The 16-time Funny Car world champion’s PEAK / BlueDEF Chevy struggled all weekend failing to make clean pass down track. The BlueDEF Platinum Chevy drove into tire smoke almost immediately in their first-round match-up against eventual event runner-up Ron Capps. Force would coast to a 10.412-second pass at 76.53 mph and watch Capps run 3.920 at 329.75.
“It’s a great weekend. NHRA, we’re growing our sport. That’s what it’s all about. I didn’t come here to beat a champion. I came here because I love driving,” Force said. “Ron Capps won the championship last year, but I don’t quit because he won the championship. I won’t quit because I lost first round. I drive this PEAK BlueDEF Chevy because I love driving race cars and I will fix it. It will only make me stronger.”
The John Force Racing team will head back to Arizona for the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park just outside of Phoenix in Chandler, Arizona, February 25-27.

CHEVROLET RACING IN NATIONAL HOT ROD ASSOCIATION LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS PRESENTED BY PROTECTTHEHARVEST.COMAUTO CLUB RACEWAY AT POMONA, CALIFORNIA FEB. 20, 2022                                                                       Chevrolet opens NHRA season with strong performances • Erica Enders claims the 900th win in the Pro Stock class• Robert Hight picks up 54th career Funny Car victory• Austin Prock returns with Top Fuel runner-up finish• Leo Glasbrenner claims Stock Eliminator victory in all-COPO Camaro final
POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2022) – Chevrolet started the 2022 National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Camping World Drag Racing Series season with two victories and a pair of runner-up finishes in the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com.
A Chevrolet COPO Camaro added the win in the Sportsman Stock Eliminator class in front of an enthusiastic crowd at sun-splashed Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
Four-time Pro Stock champion Erica Enders added to her impressive CV by claiming the 900th victory in the class, guiding the Melling Performance Chevrolet Camaro SS past Elite Motorsports teammate Aaron Stanfield in the final.
Three-time Funny Car champion Robert Hight, the No. 2 qualifier in the Auto Club of Southern California Camaro SS, earned his 54th career win.
Austin Prock, the 2019 NHRA Rookie of the Year who had competed in only three Top Fuel races the past two seasons, made an impressive return in the Montana Brands/Rocky Mountain Twist Chevrolet dragster with a runner-up finish. Prock beat No. 1 qualifier and John Force Racing teammate Brittany Force in the semifinals (3.687 to 3.700 seconds).
John Force, who qualified 16th for only the fifth time in 784 race day appearances, fell in the first round in his BlueDEF Platinum Camaro SS to reigning Funny Car champion and first-year team owner Ron Capps. It was the 111th time that the 16-time Funny Car champion faced off against Capps in eliminations, and the first time that Force lost a first-round match when qualifying 16th.
Hight avenged the defeat by slipping past Capps, the No. 1 qualifier, (3.861 seconds to 3.882) in their 10th final-round matchup.
“This is a big day for John Force Racing,” Hight said. “(For our Auto Club team) That wasn’t a lot of fun last year. Since Jimmy (Prock) came back, we’ve been in the thick of things every year. Won two championships, set records. But the guys stayed focused, worked really hard and looked at what bit us last year. ”If you look at our runs in testing and our runs here, I think they’ve found it. I’m happy.”
Enders, the No. 1 qualifier, lifted the custom trophy — topped with a silver-plated Hurst shifter symbolic of the manual shift early days – for the 900th event.
“This 900th is pretty dang cool,” said Enders, who collected her 34th career Pro Stock victory and first in the Winternationals. “It means an awful lot as a kid who was first and foremost a fan of Pro Stock. For Pro Stock, for all the hard work KB (Racing) and Elite (Motorsports) have put in to making this class what it is today – with 20-plus competitors – we couldn’t be more proud.”
Pro Stock Eliminator was introduced as an NHRA national event in January 1970, emerging from the popular Super Stock, Modified Production and Factory Experimental battles of the previous decade. Bill Jenkins, driving his ’68 big-block Chevrolet Camaro, was the first of 70 drivers to claim victory in the class by defeating Ronnie Sox in the final round of the Winternationals at Pomona.
Chevrolet has dominated the class with 348 wins, including 229 by the Camaro. Enders leads all drivers with 28 wins in a Camaro. Contributing to the win total: Cobalt (54), Cavalier (36), Beretta (11), Vega (11), Monza (6) and Lumina (1).
Enders denied reigning Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson, driving the HendrickCars.com Camaro SS, of his 100th career win with a semifinal victory. The two champions met in the semifinals at Pomona three months earlier, with Anderson winning and going on to his claim his fifth class title.
Leo Glasbrenner of Murrieta, California, earned his eighth national event Wally with his Stock Eliminator victory in an all-Chevrolet COPO Camaro final against Jeff Lane of West Bend, Washington.
“It’s pretty special to win at home. I’ve been here a lot of times and been in the final a couple of times. I won the world finals in ’15 but never have won the Winternationals. It’s really special,” Glasbrenner said.
Round 2 of the season will take place Feb. 25-27 with the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona. FS1 will telecast eliminations at 7 p.m. ET Feb. 27.
An interview with Funny Car winner ROBERT HIGHT, JOHN FORCE RACING, AUTO CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 2 qualifier):
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR COMPOSURE IN A MOMENT LIKE THAT (car body clipped the injector while being closed during pre-stage, endangering crew members)?“It’s pretty tough. I saw Trevor (Huff) off to the side and he didn’t look like he was hurt. Trevor is all right. You’ve got a job to do so I just followed Jimmy (Prock) and he said to come on in and stage. You have to gather your thoughts. He put the body down and hooked the injector. Never had that happen. When the win light came on, the first thing I asked – I didn’t even care if we won – was whether he was OK. I’m going to give this trophy to Trevor. He deserves it.”
IT TURNED OUT TO BE A GREAT RACE.“I knew it was going to be a great race. If you looked at our last qualifying run last night, it was four thousandths apart (Capps in the other lane). It was neck and neck all day long. It’s one of many battles, the first race of the year. To get the job done is a big day. We’re going to have a lot more of those this year.”
LAST YEAR WASN’T WHAT YOU WANTED. IT LOOKS LIKE YOU’RE COMING OUT HERE WITHSOMETHING TO PROVE.“Without a doubt. That wasn’t a lot of fun last year. Since Jimmy (Prock) came back, we’ve been in the thick of things every year. Won two championships, set records. But the guys stayed focused, worked really hard and looked at what bit us last year. If you look at our runs in testing and our runs here, I think they’ve found it. I’m happy. We definitely have more consistency than we had last year. I can only see it getting better.”
ARE YOU CREATING A NEW 2022?“We have to work race by race, run by run. This is a long road to win this championship. There are five or six cars out there that are right in the thick of things. You’ll come here in November and you’ll see the same guys battling it out separated by thousandths of a second. It’s not going to be easy. We’re up for the task. We on a mission, we’re focused and we’re going to do the best we can.”
An interview with Pro Stock winner ERICA ENDERS, ELITE MOTORSPORTS, MELLING PERFORMANCE CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 1 qualifier):
WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HAVING YOUR NAME ATTACHED TO THE 900TH WIN?“It means an awful lot as a kid who was first and foremost a fan of Pro Stock. Most kids you ask them what they want to be when they grow up – aside from astronauts, lawyers and doctors – if you’re talking about drag racing they’re talking about Top Fuel. It was always Pro Stock for me. I liked the fact that you left with a clutch and that you had to shift the car. That meant a lot to me, and to have such big dreams and aspirations as a kid, then driving junior dragsters for nine years and racing in the Lucas Oil Series for five before coming into Pro Stock, we’ve accomplished way more than I thought we would be able to. So, to be able to leave our mark on the class, no matter how much longer this career lasts, is something that is really special. We’ve stuck kit out, had a lot of tenacity and had a lot more valleys than we’ve had peaks. This is my 18th season in Pro Stock and this win is very significant. You treat every race day the same, but this 900th victory for Pro Stock means a lot to me.”
WHAT DOES THIS SIGNIFY AS YOU KICK OFF THIS DRIVE FOR FIVE?“I came in here with the mindset that there’s no more nice Erica. Not to be said in a negative connotation, but I’m quite frankly sick of getting my butt stomped. These guys put in all the hard work in the engine shop in the offseason. This 900th is pretty dang cool. We were able to get the 150th for the women and this is pretty cool. For Pro Stock, for all the hard work KB (Racing) and Elite (Motorsports) have put in to making this class what it is today – with 20-plus competitors – we couldn’t be more proud.”
YOUR Q1 WAS A MONSTER SHOT.“It was awesome. We opted not to go to Phoenix because with all the fuel cars there we would probably only make three runs per day. With seven cars and 45 crew guys, we kind of wanted to make our own cluster at Bakersfield. We were able to do really well. We knew when we got our butts whipped here last year at the world finals that we had to go to work, and the guys did just that.”
CHEVROLET FROM THE COCKPITTOP FUEL:BRITTANY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONSTER ENERGY CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (No. 1 qualifier; fell in semifinals to teammate Austin Prock): “This Monster Energy/Flav-R-Pac team is off to a great start. Coming in here, we were a little on edge. We’ve been out of the seat for a while, so qualifying we got one solid run in (Q1) and we were in safe, so we were allowed to push a little bit. We did it in that last run. It was a beautiful run and it moved us to No. 1. (about the semifinal loss) It’s tough; you need to let it go and move forward. That’s my new perspective coming into this season. Get back to having fun and not overthink things, because it didn’t work for me last season. (about what can do differently) It’s about learning from our mistakes last year and gaining from it.”
AUSTIN PROCK, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONTANA BRANDS/ROCKY MOUNTAIN TWIST CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (No. 4 qualifier; runner-up): “I thought I executed perfectly today, and the guys did as well. They know we’re here now. We’ll celebrate the great job everybody did. I love this place. Last time I was here I was in the final against Doug Kalitta. Really enjoy racing here and proud of my guys. We literally got the news (of racing full time in 2022) two weeks before we left (for testing) and put together an all-star team together.”
FUNNY CAR:JOHN FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, BLUEDEF PLATINUM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 16 qualifier; fell in first round): “It was a great weekend. NHRA, we’re growing our sport. That’s what it’s all about. I didn’t come here to beat a champion. I came here because I love driving. Ron Capps won the championship, but I don’t quit because he won the championship. I don’t quit because I lost first round. I drive race cars because I love driving race cars and I will fix it. It will only make me stronger.”
PRO STOCK:GREG ANDERSON, KB RACING, HENDRICKCARS.COM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 4 qualifier; fell in semifinals): “Lit the tires up at 1,000 foot, just like it did in the last run. I have no earthly idea what they’re doing on that racetrack the last 300 foot, but it’s insufficient for these kinds of cars and absolutely impassable. I’m just thanking my lucky stars I still have a HendrickCars.com Chevy. It should be upside down and tumbling into the weeds.”
KYLE KORETSKY, KB RACING, LUCAS OIL CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 3 qualifier; fell in first round, did not make start): “I think we had a malfunction with the starter, but I appreciate all the fans coming out here to support us. We ran good Friday night and qualified No. 3, so it was a good start to the season. We’ll be back with this fast Chevy Camaro.”

Hagan Drives Dodge Power Brokers Funny Car and Tony Stewart Racing to Semifinals at Winternationals to Kickstart 2022 NHRA Season

  • Dodge//SRT and Mopar’s 2022 National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Camping World Drag Racing series season gets rolling with two Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Cars driving to semifinal appearances at the 62nd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California
  • Three-time Funny Car champ Matt Hagan powered Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) to their first semifinal appearance aboard the No. 3 qualified Dodge Power Brokers Charger SRT Hellcat
  • Cruz Pedregon drove his Snap-On Tool Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car from No. 4 seeded position to a semifinal appearance
  • Leah Pruett took her Dodge Power Brokers dragster for a solid first round drive for TSR’s inaugural Top Fuel elimination effort

February 20, 2022, Pomona, California — Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) Funny Car driver Matt Hagan hit the throttle on the 2022 National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Camping World Drag Racing Series season by driving his Dodge Power Brokers Charger SRT Hellcat from his No. 3 qualifying position to the semifinals at the 62nd annual Lucas Oil Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com. Also driving to a semifinal appearance at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, California, was the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat piloted by Cruz Pedregon from a fourth place seeding.

Hagan launched his season with a strong qualifying performance to secure the No. 3 spot on the eliminations ladder. He earned the fledgling TSR team’s first Funny Car round win aboard the Dodge Power Brokers Charger SRT Hellcat with a 4.071 seconds pass at 260.31 mph that saw the three-time Winternationals winner have to peddle it at the 660-foot mark but still turn on the win light. The team regrouped quickly and came back strong in the second round against No. 6 seed Bob Tasca by posting their quickest run of the weekend with a 3.885-second elapsed time run at 328.94 mph to beat his opponent’s 3.984 sec./325.77 mph effort.

The semifinal match pitted Hagan against the No. 2 qualifier Robert Hight and saw the TSR Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat take the early lead with a 0.048-second reaction time to his opponent’s 0.059-second start. Unfortunately, a dropped cylinder hampered Hagan’s on track progress and brought the team’s first outing to a close.

Meanwhile, Pedregon powered his Snap-on Tools Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat from the No. 4 spot on the ladder through eliminations with a first round win over Terry Haddock and a solid second round victory after a side-by-side drag race with Alexis DeJoria to advance to the semifinals. Paired with No. 1 qualifier Ron Capps for the next elimination round, Pedregon put in a good lap with a 3.918 sec./309.77 mph pass but it wasn’t quite enough to challenge Capps’ 3.881 sec./331.28 mph run.

Tony Stewart Racing Top Fuel pilot Leah Pruett was pleased with the first official qualifying laps of the season for the new team aboard her Dodge Power Brokers dragster to put her in the top half of the eliminations ladder with a best run of 3.768 seconds at 326.63 mph. From the No. 7 position and with lane choice over No. 10 seed Antron Brown, Pruett wheeled her HEMI®-powered machine to a solid pass at 3.748 sec./328.86 mph with a 0.118-second reaction time. However, as their first elimination run wasn’t quite enough to overtake Brown’s quicker 0.057-second start and 3.724 sec./ 327.66 mph lap and turn on the win lights for the team’s first round, the TSR team will now put their focus on preparations for the next national event.

The Dodge//SRT Mopar contingent will now head to Phoenix, Arizona, for next weekend’s NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park on February 25-27.

ADDITIONAL NOTES and QUOTES:

Leah Pruett, Dodge Power Brokers Top Fuel Dragster

(No. 7 Qualifier – 3.726 seconds at 328.54 mph)

Round 1: (0.118-second reaction time, 3.748 seconds at 328.86 mph) loss to No. 10 Antron Brown (0.057/3.724/327.66)

“If you would have told me three months ago that we would qualify the Dodge Power Brokers dragster No. 7 for the Winternationals, make it down the track nearly every time, have a healthy running engine combination with a reactive car, and a team that gels together very well, I would take that 10 out of 10 times. We are still sorting our power range and developing our baseline and I am learning to race under different circumstances. I had a less than impressive start, very atypical of the consistent quick times I had in qualifying. I will be working on managing my happy throttle foot while we fine tune our high HEMI horsepower performance.”

Matt Hagan, Dodge Power Brokers Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car

(No. 3 Qualifier – 3.886 seconds at 313.07 mph)

Round 1: (0.072-second reaction time, 4.071 seconds at 260.31 mph) defeats No. 14 Chad Green (0.072/4.124/282.13)

Round 2: (0.057/3.885/328.94) defeats No. 6 Bob Tasca (0.052/3.984/325.77)

Round 3: (0.048/4.026/317.64) loss to No. 2 Robert Hight (0.059/3.861/332.10)  cylinder out

“I am really proud of Tony (Stewart) Leah (Pruett) for putting this all together in such a quick fashion. I’m also super proud of my guys to be able to get a rhythm going today, since we’re all in a new position. We only had an hour to turn the car around, so we still had to check headers, weigh and scale in that time. Today is obviously not the result we wanted, getting eliminated in the semifinals. I know what we are capable of and I know what we can do to get that fixed. We’ll go onto Phoenix and be just as strong there. I’m really proud of my lights, I was murdering the tree all weekend. That gives me confidence as a driver, but it also gets in other drivers’ heads. We want to win every race we can, but I was pretty happy with this Dodge Power Brokers car for the first outing. You learn from your mistakes and move forward. Drag racing has the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. You lose more than you win, but when you win, it’s great. I’m looking forward to that first win with this team.”

“Putting Pomona behind us and rolling into Phoenix right away helps the team get back into the groove of things; making a run, taking it apart, putting it back together and dragging it back up to the starting line and just getting back into the rhythm. That rhythm helps builds confidence in my team and lets me just focus on what I have to do on the starting line with the Dodge Power Brokers Hellcat so we can turn on more win lights.”

Cruz Pedregon, Pedregon Racing Snap-on® Tools Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

(No. 4 Qualifier – 3.906 seconds at 325.22 mph)

Round 1: (0.128-second reaction time, 3.954 seconds at 323.43 mph) defeats No. 13 Terry Haddock (0.118/6.011/120.36)

Round 2: (0.041/3.962/323.66) defeats No. 5 Alexis DeJoria (0.062/3.981/323.50)

Round 3: (0.082/3.918/309.77) loss to No. 1 Ron Capps (0.067/3.881/331.28)

“I’m happy with today’s semifinal performance. Semifinal finishes and runner-ups, we’re going to have a few of those [this year]. It was some good competition and (Ron) Capps had a really good car. (My crew chief) JC (John Collins), I could tell by the look on his face he was about to put it through there. What a great job these guys have done. We didn’t quite have the performance these other guys did, but when it counted, we started to creep up on it. A little bit of glare out there. I missed the tree a little tiny bit and against guys like Capps, you can’t miss the tree at all. He was right there. For the Snap-on Tools Dodge team, Russells Petroff and everybody that helps us, the semifinals is a great start.”

Mike Coughlin wins Top Alcohol Dragster at season-opening Lucas Oil Winternat’ls

Ohioan has now captured national event titles in five different classes
POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 20) — It didn’t take Mike Coughlin very long to make his mark in Top Alcohol Dragster, winning the 62nd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals Sunday afternoon in just his second start in the challenging, high-speed elimination class.
Combined with past national event victories in Top Dragster, Top Sportsman, Super Comp and Pro Stock Truck, Coughlin joins an elite group of drivers in the history of the sport to have mastered five or more categories.
“I still can’t believe it,” Coughlin said. “To be sitting here waiting for our turn in the Winner’s Circle at such an historic drag strip is just hard to grasp, especially since I still feel like I’ve got so much to learn in this class. These guys at McPhillips Racing are just so good. All the credit goes to them.”
After just a pair of runs in preseason testing, Coughlin and his McPhillips Racing crew came out firing with an opening salvo of 5.233 seconds at 270.81 mph, placing the JEGS.com Dragster on the top step of the elimination ladder.
“That run ended up sticking through all three rounds of qualifying so we entered eliminations as the Number 1 qualifier, got a bye-run where we posted a really steady 5.304 at 266.37 mph that just set the tone for the day,” Coughlin said. “We just kept getting better and better and faster and faster each round. The car is a dream to drive.
“Every run I’m getting a little more comfortable as well, which helped a bunch. It’s a big change for me to go from Top Dragster to Top Alcohol Dragster. This car is so powerful and pulls super hard all the way down the track. It’s quite a thrill.”
Coughlin and team really weren’t challenged too severely this weekend. After the opening bye run, they dismissed Garrett Bateman with a 5.235 at 268.01 mph to Bateman’s 5.401 at 274.39 mph, and then Madison Payne with a 5.206 at 277.26 mph to her 5.286 at 271.46 mph to reach the final. Coughlin’s 5.206 was quickest of the event.
In the final, Coughlin stared down class dominator Joey Severance and came away victorious once more, this time with a 5.237 at 275.90 mph to Severance’s resigned 6.863 at 133.18 mph.
“The final was pretty cool because my dad used to race Joey’s dad (also named Joey Severance) back in the ’70s in Pro Comp,” Coughlin said. “How’s that for some history? Beating that team in the final capped a great weekend. They are a very good operation over there but I have so much confidence in (car owners and crew chiefs) Rich and Rich Jr. (McPhillips).
“You look at this entire team, from (crewmen) Duke Roney, Don Nolan, Darrell McComas and Tony Collier, to our teammate Jasmine Salinas and everyone on the Scrappers (Top Alcohol Dragster) team, who helped us all weekend, and it’s just an incredible group all the way around.
“I hope we get to do this a few more times this year because I’m having a blast.”
Aside from JEGS, McPhillips Racing receives support from NGK Spark Plugs, Lucas Oil Products, and Bonfanti Clutches.
Joining the Winner’s Circle celebration was Troy Coughlin Jr., Mike’s nephew, who drives the JEGS.com Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro in Pro Stock. The younger Coughlin bowed out of the race earlier in the day after losing a close race by .01 seconds.

RCR NCS Post Race Report: Daytona 500

Austin Dillon and the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops / TRACKER Off Road Chevrolet Team Earn Stage Points at Daytona International Speedway Despite Challenging Day
26th36th21st
“The DAYTONA 500 is one of my favorite races of the year and Daytona International Speedway is one of my favorite tracks, so I always come to Florida with big goals for this race. The week started off strong. Justin Alexander and everyone on the team prepared a very fast Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Off Road Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. We settled in and were racing conservatively so that we could be in position for the win, but it wasn’t in the plans for today. We got a little bit of damage to the nose early on that impacted handling, but we made repairs during pit stops to help fix the problem. Midway through the race, the engine started to sound funny and we lost a lot of speed. Our ECR team ran diagnostics under race conditions, but there’s only so much you can do when there is something internal going on. We dropped two valve springs, but we hung on the best we could and settled for 25th. It’s not the day we hoped for, but things happen in racing and our overall engine program and race program is strong. We’re ready to move on and go to Auto Club Speedway next week.”

Strong Run for Tyler Reddick and the No. 8 3CHI Chevrolet Team in DAYTONA 500 Despite Early Exit From The Great American Race
35th15thN/A
“We had a really fast 3CHI Chevrolet all week so we felt confident heading into the year’s DAYTONA 500. We started the race 15th and were logging consistent and safe laps and try to put ourselves in the best position possible to be there at the end of the race. My crew chief, Randall Burnett, and the team worked hard throughout the race on both strategy and mechanical adjustments. I thought we were in a pretty good position, but we had a part break which caused me to spin and wreck on the frontstretch. It was a tough way to end the day, but there’s a learning curve with these Next Gen cars and we’re all discovering and studying a lot right now. The entire team and everyone at RCR and ECR worked really hard to make these cars fast, and we’ll continue to put in the work needed to get us to Victory Lane this season. I’m looking forward to getting to the West Coast and giving it my all this season.”

HOW WAS THIS FOR A START TO YOUR SEASON?“Yes, that was our goal today. Race smart and race when we needed to in order to get to the finish. I am really proud of these guys because we accomplished what we wanted; to get in position late in the race and have a shot at a good finish. It’s a great start for this team and we are looking forward to Fontana and the rest of the season.”
DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 TOOTSIES ORCHID LOUNGE CAMARO ZL1 – Finished 18th“Our day was O.K. We had a fast No. 99 Tootsies Orchid Lounge Chevy, we just got behind there with the speeding penalty. The No. 42 (Ty Dillon) kind of pushed me to the grass and then we had a loose wheel. It wasn’t a clean day, but we’ll move onto Auto Club (Speedway).”  RICKY STENHOUSE JR., NO. 47 KROGER / IRISH SPRING CAMARO ZL1 – Finished 28th“We put ourselves in the perfect position really for us to come down to leading the Daytona 500 with five laps to go. All and all, our No. 47 Kroger/Irish Spring Camaro just got pushed in the wrong spot. We did everything we could today to put ourselves in the right position. We’ve got to be happy about that and move on.” KYLE LARSON, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1 – Sidelined by damage sustained in an accident on lap 190; Finished 32nd “It’s disappointing. I had a run there on the No. 4 (Kevin Harvick). I didn’t realize how close he was to the No. 17 (Chris Buescher). I got to him right as he was getting to him and it got him out of shape. I hate that I did that. It’s so hard to see in front of him, especially on the straightaway like that.”“I didn’t realize how close he was to him and it just got him all jacked up. I hate that it ended our day, as well as a bunch of others. Our No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevy was fast and hopefully we can see a Chevy win here with Ricky (Stenhouse Jr.) out front.” TYLER REDDICK, NO. 8 3CHI CAMARO ZL1- Sidelined by damage sustained in an accident on lap 152; Finished 35th “We had a really fast 3CHI Chevrolet all week and felt really good after our team worked hard to make adjustments during today’s race. We had a part break which caused me to spin and wreck on the frontstretch. With the shortage of parts for these new cars, that definitely puts more work on my team and that’s tough. I’m looking forward to getting to the west coast and improving our performance. The entire RCR team and everyone at ECR worked really hard to make these cars fast.” WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 AXALTA CAMARO ZL1 – Sidelined by damage sustained in an accident on lap 63; Finished 38th “It looked like the bottom lane was pushing well; nice, balanced and controlled. The outside lane was getting a little squirrely the last lap or so. I noticed that, but there’s nothing you can really do. You’re just trying to push your guy out front. It was (Martin) Truex Jr. in front of me and Kyle Busch. We were doing a good job of kind of managing that gap on the bottom. I think the No. 21 (Harrison Burton) just got loose, slid down the track and I slid to the inside wall. There was nothing we could really do. I think we were definitely going to finish in the top-five in that Stage. Our No. 24 Axalta Camaro seemed really fast. It’s disappointing, but we’ll go onto California (Auto Club Speedway) and we’ll be fast there.” ROSS CHASTAIN, NO. 1 ADVENT HEALTH CAMARO ZL1 – Sidelined by damage sustained in an accident on lap 63; Finished 40th TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU SAW THERE.“They were just wrecking and I saw a car upside down. Just wrong place, wrong time for our No. 1 Advent Health Chevrolet. Bummer.” HOW CAREFUL DO YOU THINK EVERYONE WAS BEING? BRAD KESELOWSKI HAD A STRONG PUSH THERE AND IT JUST DIDN’T WORK.“Yeah, everybody I was around was pretty calm. I saw the tandem up front. Everything looked fine. I was blind to what happened, so I don’t really know what went wrong.”

GATOR SMOKE: Madden grabs DIRTcar Nationals win, Moran Crowned Big Gator Champion

Devin Moran wins “Big Gator” trophy by one point over Chris Madden; earns second DIRTcar Nationals championshipBARBERVILLE, FL – February 20, 2022 –  Chris Madden knew he couldn’t play it safe Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park. As the Gray Court, SC driver’s chances to win dwindled, he decided to seize an opportunity.  Madden ran fourth during the first 10 laps before taking a risk that led to reward. He thundered to the top of the Volusia clay, picking off Mike Marlar and Max Blair to get to second. That’s when he set his sights on leader Dale McDowell.  As the Chickamauga, GA driver moved to the middle to pass a slower car, “Smokey” dealt his final blow. Madden switched lanes through Turns 3 and 4, powering under McDowell to take control of the lead en route to winning the DIRTcar Nationals finale, while Devan Moran won the overall Big Gator Championship. The choice to go to the outside was crucial in Madden’s 33rd career World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Models triumph.  “It was very important,” Madden said. “I thought we messed up with an adjustment, and when they dropped the green flag, I couldn’t keep up, and I was like, oh boy, I’m in trouble.  “The racetrack finally slowed down enough to where we were pretty good and [McDowell], and they caught lap traffic, so I had nothing to lose but step out there, and we found the groove and happened to get by right in time.” Madden’s second career DIRTcar Nationals victory is the culmination of a consistent week for him and his team. He’s now at the top of the World of Outlaws CASE Late Models point standings—16 points ahead of McDowell.  “We’ve had a great car all week,” Madden said. “I’ve made some bad calls on restarts, picking the wrong line, and took myself out of a couple of wins this week. Overall, we’ve had a great week, my guys worked their tail off doing a great job, and I appreciate them.” Mike Marlar, the 2018 Series Champion, crossed the line second. The Winfield, TN campaigner sat third for most of the race, getting by Rookie of the Year contender Max Blair on the final lap.  “I had a good car; I just couldn’t do much about it there,” Marlar said. “[Blair] was just in my line. I kind of waited until I thought I could pass on tires, and the last couple of laps, I just drove it a lot harder and got him. But I probably never would’ve gotten Madden.” McDowell finished third after leading early in the race. “The Mac Daddy” felt he was a sitting duck once he caught the back of the field.   “I didn’t know where to go, and I went to the middle,” McDowell said. “That’s where I should’ve been, but [lap cars] moved out a little bit so [Madden] and them shot by me. Some days are your days, and some days aren’t.” Max Blair, the Rookie of the race, slipped to fourth on the final lap. Despite making a mistake at the end, the Viper Motorsports team is happy to get its first top five of the season.  “Anytime you run fourth with these guys, it’s something to be proud of,” Blair said. “It sucks a little bit when you run second the whole race and then give it away on the last lap and fall back to fourth. But, with how this week went and everything, fourth is a lot better than 18th.” The Centerville, PA driver leads the chase for Rookie of the Year after six races—10 points ahead of Tanner English.  He isn’t the only rookie who grabbed their first top five, as Kyle Hammer finished fifth. It’s momentum the Clinton, IL driver can take moving forward, on top of leading 20 laps during Thursday’s DIRTcar Nationals Feature.   “This is one of the hardest tracks we’ll probably hit on the schedule,” Hammer said. “I mean, look at all these guys. Ryan Gustin dominates one night and misses the Feature the next. We led half the Feature and missed the next night and take a provisional. “It shows [Volusia] is a hard track no matter who you are, so I feel like we’ve got a huge confidence booster going into the rest of the year.” While Madden did everything possible to win the Big Gator title, Moran took it home for the second straight year. “The Mailman” did just enough to win the DIRTcar Nationals championship—besting Madden by one point.  Despite not finding Victory Lane, Moran still made his way to the podium four times at Volusia. It capped off the end to a successful Speedweeks for the Dresden, OH driver.  It’s pretty cool,” Moran said. “We wanted to win so bad here this week, and I felt we had the car too. “To come out here and get the big gator two years in a row after not racing a whole lot is a lot of fun. I can’t thank Wylie [Moran’s brother and crew chief] enough.” Chris Madden proved that taking a chance at the right time can pay off on the path to Victory. It’s risks like Madden’s that led to a reward—and a chance to contend for a World of Outlaws CASE Late Models title.  UP NEXT: The Most Powerful Late Models on the Planet make their inaugural appearance at The Rev in Monroe, LA, March 11-12. BRITTANY FORCE AND MONSTER ENERGY SECURE No. 1 QUALIFYING POSITION AT NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 19, 2022) – For the 33rd time I her career, Brittany Force took her Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac dragster to the No. 1 qualifying position Saturday at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Robert Hight and the Automobile Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS team will start race day from No. 2 while Austin Prock landed the Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist dragster in third and John Force got the PEAK / BlueDEF PLATINUM Chevy in the show at No. 16.
In true David Grubnic and Mac Savage tuning fashion, the Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac dragster laid down a stellar 3.661-second at 333.91 mph to take over the No. 1 qualifying position for the 19th time in their last 31 starts. Like many of her competitors, Brittany Force ran into tire smoke on her first attempt on Saturday to coast to 7.915-seconds. Force will line up with Ron August Jr. in the first round of eliminations.
“It feels awesome just to be back out here at my home track, starting a new season with the Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team. I’m excited to be back with all of them, doing what we love. Even better to go No. 1 first race of the season it just pumps all of us up to see what we can do this season,” Force said. “I love it here in Pomona. I grew up here, sitting in the stands watching my dad. So, this is a very special track to me. It’s where my love of drag racing began. I have so many great memories here, standing in the winner’s circle with my dad and my sisters. Standing in my own winner’s circle in 2017 when we won the championship. So to win here at the opening of the season, that’s what we’re going for. That’s why we’re here.”
Coming into the second qualifying session, Robert Hight and the Auto Club team ran into tire smoke mid-track to coast to only a 5.934-second pass. The Auto Club Chevy cleaned things up in the final try with a 3.861 pass at 331.36 mph. Despite the improvement from their 3.882 on Friday evening, the Auto Club Chevy will be starting from the No. 2 position to face Jason Rupert round one after being bumped by Ron Capps.
“That was a pretty good run today. You know we were lined up to run John in the first round which, not ideal, but it is what it is. I knew Jimmy and Chris would still throwdown. Capps over there, we really gave the fans a show with the header flames lit. It was a good side-by-side qualifying run and probably a pretty good showing of what we’ll get tomorrow during race day with the cooler conditions,” Hight said. “I’m looking forward to it. We want to set the tone for the rest of the year and set it right, like we did in 2019. I think we have the pieces to do it so I’m excited. It’s going to be a good day.”
Austin Prock and the Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist dragster team had their own bout with tire smoke to start Saturday before laying down a solid 3.711-second pass at 331.85 mph to move into the No. 4 spot.
“Great end to the day. Made a nice pass, pretty proud of that,” Prock said. “We were trying to run right around there, maybe a little bit quicker. I felt like it was getting a little loose down the track. We should be shaped up pretty well tomorrow. We get to race Clay Millican. I’ve been hungry all weekend. I led the class off the starting line this weekend so far, so if I can keep doing that tomorrow we should be able to go some rounds.”
John Force and the PEAK / BlueDEF Chevy made it into the show Saturday with their 4.240-second pass a 216.45 mph early Saturday. The 16-time champion had to pedal his Chevy Camaro during his final try of the day after it rattled the tires before shutting off for a 7.164. Force will face-off with long-time competitior Ron Capps in the first round.
“Well, we’re in the show. That’s all that matters,” Force said. “We’ll be okay tomorrow, new day, cooler conditions, we ran good at testing, so we’ll figure it out. Brittany over there with Monster going No.1 and Robert landing the No. 2 spot for Auto Club, Austin Prock he ran good tonight too. We just have to go out, take this BlueDEF Chevy A to B and go some rounds.”

  • Dodge//SRT and Mopar get the 2022 National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Camping World Drag Racing series season started with three Dodge Funny Cars and a Top Fuel entry in the top half of the eliminations ladder for the 62nd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, California

  • Cruz Pedregon qualifies his Snap-On Tool Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car No. 4 for Funny Car eliminations
  • Defending Winternationals Top Fuel winner Pruett qualifies her Dodge Power Brokers dragster No. 7 for TSR’s inaugural race

February 19, 2022, Pomona, California— The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat that won last year’s Funny Car world title kicked off the 2022 National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Camping World Drag Racing Series season at the top of the qualifying timing sheets as driver and new team owner Ron Capps claimed the No. 1 qualifier position for the season-opening 62nd annual Lucas Oil Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, California.

Capps, also the defending Winternationals winner, drove his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat to the provisional No. 3 spot in Friday’s qualifying session, posted the quickest run of the second session, then bettered that with a stout 3.857 second elapsed time lap at 332.43 mph under the lights to secure his 30th career No. 1 qualifier position. He’ll battle the No. 16 seed and fellow veteran racer John Force in the first eliminations round of the year to kick off his 28th NHRA season of competition.

Last season’s runner-up in the Funny Car championship and three-time (2011, 2014, 2020) NHRA World Champ Matt Hagan launched the new Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) team’s season with a strong Friday evening qualifying run aboard his Dodge Power Brokers machine to provisionally sit No. 2 with 3.886-second pass at 329.344 mph. He repeated the exact same elapsed time lap under the lights in the final qualifying session, clicking off just before the finish line, to secure the No. 3 spot on the eliminations ladder to pair him with No. 14 seed Chad Green.

Two-time Funny Car champ Cruz Pedregon, who is looking to build on a productive 2021 season that saw his team earn two national titles and finish fourth in the championship, took his Snap-on Tools Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat to the fourth quickest time of the second session, then improved on that performance in the cooler evening air with a 3.906 sec./ 325.22 mph run that moved him from the seventh spot to No. 4 qualifier position. The Cruz Pedregon Racing HEMI-powered machine will have lane choice over No. 13 seed Terry Haddock as a first round pairing.

In Top Fuel qualifying, Leah Pruett took her Dodge Power Brokers dragster for its first official qualifying runs with the fledgling TSR team while looking to prepare to defend her 2021 Winternationals win. She took her HEMI-powered machine to the fourth quickest pass of the second qualifying session with 3.768 second elapsed time run at 326.63 mph, then powered to a 3.768 second/ 326.63 mph on her final run to keep her seventh overall placing on the timing sheets. Pruett will face off against No. 10 seed Antron Brown in Sunday’s first elimination round of the new season.

Highlights of qualifying at the Winternationals will air on FS1 this Sunday, February 20, at 7 a.m. Eastern, followed by three hours of elimination rounds coverage on FS1 beginning at 10 p.m. Eastern.

Qualifying 3: 3.726 sec. / 328.54 mph

“This Dodge Power Brokers team has qualified seventh for this first race. We had a little bit of tire shake on Friday night but got that power under control. We ran a 3.726 on our final qualifying session. I’m very much looking forward to eliminations tomorrow. We’ve got [Antron Brown] in the next lane, but we do have lane choice.”

Matt Hagan, Dodge Power Brokers Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car

Qualifying 2: 5.497 sec./ 128.98 mph

Qualifying 3: 3.886 sec./ 313.07 mph (1 bonus point for third quickest run of session)

“We had a great qualifying session, ended up No. 3, and had some great runs. Two good night runs, but struggled a bit with our day run when we overpowered the track, but that’s what ( Crew Chief) Dickie Venables does best, he makes a lot of horsepower. Looking to get this Dodge Power Brokers Funny Car car hopefully in the winner circle tomorrow. We have 16 cars to battle it out and we got a great race car. I feel very competent with my life. I feel confident with my lights. I feel confident with what the crew is doing and what Dickie is doing up there on the calls that he’s making. We’re just going to go out there and race our race car and have some fun doing it.”

Qualifying 2: 3.923 sec./ 326.40 mph (3 bonus points for quickest run of session)

Qualifying 3: 3.857 sec./ 332.43 mph (3 bonus points for quickest run of session)

“That thing was a rocket ship, I was just hanging on.You start to wonder do you want to go No. 1? Or maybe two or three and stay away from John Force, but this yellow No. 1 hat means a lot. To start my career as a team owner from this position, it’s huge. We know we have what it takes as a team, we know we have the parts, the people. I always say ‘I wouldn’t want to race the NAPA car.’ It’s just a car that always goes down the race track, and it’s tough to beat. It’s great to get the No. 1 and show that we can run with the best of them, but that 92 from Q2 was even more impressive to me, because we did that in the heat, and we were half-a-tenth or so ahead of everybody else. We know we’ll have similar conditions tomorrow. So, to show we can throw down in the heat, and then come back up and do the same thing in cooler conditions, it just instills so much confidence in me.”

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 19, 2022) — Qualifying in the three professional categories for the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com showed that Chevrolet teams and drivers are fast and well-positioned for victories in the season opener.
Brittany Force claimed her 33rd career No. 1 qualifier honor in Top Fuel – and 11th in the past 14 races – with a blistering run of 3.661 seconds in her Monster Energy Chevrolet dragster on the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona track.
“It feels awesome just to be back out here at my home track, starting a new season with the Monster Energy/Flav-R-Pac team. Even better to go No. 1. First race of the season it just pumps all of us up to see what we can do this season,” said Force, the 2021 championship runner-up who will be seeking her first Winternationals victory.
Four-time Pro Stock champion Erica Enders earned the 23rd No. 1 qualifier of her career with a pass of 6.521 seconds at 210.44 mph in the Melling Performance Camaro SS.
“She’s very consistent. She responds well to the input my crew chiefs give her. We haven’t scored a whole lot of No. 1 qualifier lately, but it’s a great way to start off the season,” Enders said.
Fourteen Camaro SS drivers will be aiming to hold the silver shifter – the trophy created for the winner of the 900th race in Pro Stock history. Bill Jenkins won the first race in the class in the 1970 Winternationals in his big-block Camaro.
Reigning Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson will seek his 100th career victory in the class, which would make him the second NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series driver to hit the milestone and fifth overall. Sixteen-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force leads the way with 154 wins. A victory by Anderson, who qualified fourth in the HendrickCars.com Camaro SS, would also tie Bob Glidden (7) for the most in Pro Stock in the Winternationals.
Camrie Carusso, who was a crew member on Enders’ car a few years ago, qualified eighth for her NHRA Pro Stock debut in the PowerBuilt Camaro SS. Race day will mark the second time two female drivers have competed for a Wally in the same event in Pro Stock history.
Robert Hight held the top spot in Funny Car qualifications based on his 3.882-second pass in Q1 until the final run of the third and final session. Hight improved his time to 3.861 seconds in the Auto Club of Southern California Camaro SS and qualified second. John Force qualified 16th in the BlueDEF Platinum Camaro SS.
FS1 will telecast taped eliminations at 10 p.m. ET on Feb. 20.
An interview with Top Fuel No. 1 qualifier BRITTANY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONSTER ENERGY CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (33rd of career):HOW GOOD DID THAT LAST RUN FEEL?“It feels awesome just to be back out here at my home track, starting a new season with the Monster Energy/Flav-R-Pac team. I’m excited to be back with all of them, doing what we love. Even better to go No. 1. First race of the season it just pumps all of us up to see what we can do this season.”
IT SEEMS YOU BUILT UP TO THAT RUN.“We were out at Phoenix testing. I think we made nine or 10 runs and it was a little bit of a struggle for us. We learned what we needed to, but we only made one full pass. We were making half-track runs most of the time, and we came out here and struggled on a couple qualifying runs. So, it felt good to have a solid pass down the track going into race day, and at 3.66 that’s pretty outstanding. I’m pumped, I’m excited about it, and I give that up to David Grubnic and Mac Savage and all our guys.”
HOW FRUSTRATING WAS IT TO NOT MAKE THAT ONE GLORY RUN AT TESTING?“It was fine. We’re out there to find our routine of things again. Grubnic asked, ‘Brittany, do you need to make full passes?’ I told him I’d love to make a few going into Pomona. I stand by David Grubnic and what he wants to do. We did make one full pass. You want to get back in the feel of things, but honestly getting in the car, warming it up, doing a burnout at 60 feet is all you need. Typically, testing is all over the place with everyone trying to find their groove again. It’s always up and down and never as planned.”
WHEN YOU COME UP WITH GREAT CONDITIONS LIKE THIS, DO YOU KNOW GRUBNIC IS GOING TO TAKE YOU TO NO. 1?“He’s really quiet. He has so much going on in his head. He just comes to me and says, ‘I’m not going to say anything.’ I already know what that means. We were in safe with our run last night, so it gave us the opportunity to push and take some chances.”
WHAT WOULD WINNING YOUR FIRST WINTERNATIONALS MEAN TO YOU?“This is my home track. I love it here. I grew up here, sitting in the stands watching my dad. So, this is a very special track to me. It’s where my love of drag racing began. I have so many great memories here, standing in the winner’s circle with my dad and my sisters. Standing in my own winner’s circle in 2017 when we won the championship. So, to do it at the opening of the season, that’s what we’re going for. That’s why we’re here.” An interview with Pro Stock No. 1 qualifier ERICA ENDERS, ELITE MOTORSPORTS, MELLING PERFORMANCE CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (23rd of her career):DO YOU FEEL GOOD GOING INTO RACE DAY?“Absolutely. This is probably the best race car we’ve had in a long time even considering the Countdown last year. We had a goal in the offseason to come out swinging. I think we have something to prove. We got our Chevy Camaro tuned up and to lay down three really consistent runs during qualifying and that gives you confidence heading into race day.”
THE 900TH PRO STOCK RACE AND YOU’RE GOING FOR YOUR FIRST WINTERNATIONALS VICTORY. HOW EXCITED ARE YOU?“Tomorrow is very exciting, and I’ll try to focus on keeping it like a normal race. I just go up and try to control every aspect in my lane and try to do the best I can at the starting line, hit my shift points and turn on four win lights. We’ve been fortunate enough to battle it out for awards and it definitely would mean a lot to take that bad boy home.”
HOW DO YOU APPROACH TOMORROW?“It’s another goal my team and I had this year. We’re not out here to make friends. We’re going to do our best to put our Melling Performance Camaro in the winner’s circle.”
CHEVROLET FROM THE COCKPITTOP FUEL:AUSTIN PROCK, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONTANA BRANDS/ROCKY MOUNTAIN TWIST CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (qualified ninth): “Overall, a pretty good start to the weekend. It’s been a while since I’ve driven one of these things, and this is the shortest shut down on the circuit, so you have to make sure you have the laundry out on time. Tomorrow we’ll have a decent baseline and go from there.”
FUNNY CAR:JOHN FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, BLUEDEF PLATINUM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (qualified 16th): “I’m just glad to be back in a PEAK Chevy, glad to be starting the season. This BlueDEF team is working hard, we’ll be OK. Danny Hood, Tim Fabrisi, we’re looking good for this year.”
ROBERT HIGHT, JOHN FORCE RACING, AUTO CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (qualified second): We’ve got to get one run at a time and four on Sunday and then we’ll be excited.”
PRO STOCK:GREG ANDERSON, KB RACING, HENDRICKCARS.COM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (qualified fourth): “We came in a little bit too conservative. We tested over at Phoenix and the racetrack just wasn’t that great, so we came in and tried to be safe on that first run yesterday. It was very safe; it just wasn’t quite quick enough and that’s what you get for that. It’s more indicative today of what we can run tomorrow. The car is as fast as anybody. We just lost a couple of qualifying spots because we were a little slack yesterday. It’s going to be a tough year.”
KYLE KORETSKY, KB RACING, LUCAS OIL CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (qualified third): “We’re happy with how everything went. Friday, we started out really strong and ended up No. 3. We’ll get ready for tomorrow.”
DALLAS GLENN, KB RACING, RAD TORQUE SYSTEMS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (qualified seventh): “The car is working really good; it’s been good at 60 foot every run. I’m getting the clutch pedal handled, so the (fourth) run was my best light yet. I think the car is making good, clean runs and we’re just going to chip away at it. I think we’ll be good by the end of race day or even next race. The car is there and everything is there. We just have to put it all together.”
CAMRIE CARUSSO, CARUSSO RACING, POWERBUILT CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (qualified eighth in her first Pro Stock race): “It’s been crazy, it’s been fun and we’ve learned a ton. The PowerBuilt Camaro has been good to me and so has my team. We’ll be ready to bring our A game tomorrow.”
MATT HARTFORD, HARTFORD RACING, TOTAL SEAL CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (qualified 10th): “(Final run) We needed to get off the bump spot. We’ve not done a very good job this weekend – at least today. Yesterday I thought we made a good run, but we had a fuel that was not correct in a correctly labeled jug, and we got (penalized) for fuel and that put us way behind. The Total Seal/CIP1 Camaro knows how to win rounds, so we’ll go up there and execute tomorrow.”

TOYOTA QUOTES

JUSTIN ASHLEY, Phillips Connect Toyota Top Fuel Dragster, Davis Motorsports

Qualifying Position: 2nd

Following your run in Q1 on Friday night, how did it feel to put down such a fast pass to post the provisional number one qualifier position?

“That run felt great. You have the whole off-season that is relatively quick since it is only two months, but at the end of the day it feels like it has been forever. It is exciting to be able to get back in this Phillips Connect Toyota dragster, to go down there on the first run of the season and go right to the top with a run as good as that in front of our new sponsor. That is exactly what we were looking for.”

DOUG KALITTA, Mac Tools Toyota Top Fuel Dragster, Kalitta Motorsports

Qualifying Position: 5th

How strong is this Mac Tools Toyota and what are your expectations for tomorrow’s race?

“The Mac Tools Toyota dragster in the third session there was .372 was an 0. So I’m not exactly sure where that puts us, but I feel real good for taking that baby into Sunday. It should be good. I love running at this place. Just a lot of confidence in my team. We’ll up there and hope to have a great day tomorrow.”

How is the communication going with the new crew chief line-up on this race car?

“The new calls are good. And we’re only going to get better. So you know we’ll just keep at it. Looking forward to driving this thing for sure tomorrow.”

SHAWN LANGDON, DHL Toyota Top Fuel Dragster, Kalitta Motorsports

Qualifying Position: 8th

You were in a must qualify position going into Q3, what happened in the first two qualifying runs and how do you feel about the pass you were able to put down in this session?

“Obviously, we had some mechanical issues on the first two runs. We had a clutch box malfunction and then we had a fitting break that let the clutch fluid out. We just had just some little malfunctions, but we just really went back up there and just really like Q1, there’s a lot left in the car, but it made a good run .374. That should get us in the top half of the field. And we just really kind of had to go back and go back to our testing notes. We got little notes, you know, just from a couple days testing and so we just kind of went to scenarios where you just trust the process and go with your gut instinct, and fortunately it paid off.”

Did you feel like this team finally got to show how strong the car is for this weekend?

“It’s not there yet, but it’s close.”

RCR NXS Post Race Report: Daytona International Speedway

Austin Hill and the No. 21 Bennett Transportation & Logistics/United Rentals Chevrolet Team Kick Off 2022 Season With Thrilling Win at Daytona International Speedway
1st2nd2nd
“We joined Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series to win, and that’s what we did tonight. I’m so happy for Bennett Transportation & Logistics, United Rentals, Global Industrial and all of the partners at RCR. I worked really well with my spotter, Derek Kneeland, all night. Throughout the race, I kept telling Derek and crew chief Andy Street that I was putting information in the memory bank to remember for late in the race. We timed it perfectly. I was able to drag back and the No. 98 car gave me a heck of a push. We were able to get by. I won at Daytona International Speedway in 2019 with a new team, so it’s cool to join RCR and to win my first race with them. It means so much to me that Andy Street, Danny Lawrence, Richard Childress, and all of the guys at RCR and ECR believe in me. It’s been a fun off-season, and now we get to go race for a championship.”

Sheldon Creed Races The No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet To Solid Sixth-Place Finish at Daytona International Speedway

“We had a really strong and fast No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet Camaro, so I have to thank everyone at RCR and ECR for all of the work they did in the off season to put us in the best position possible to start off 2022. We ran up front and stayed out of trouble all night. Even after we got behind, we kept pushing and came home with a solid finish. It’s a really great start to the 2022 season for our whole team and I’m excited to keep this momentum going next weekend at Auto Club Speedway. Congrats to my teammate, Austin Hill, coming home with the win at Daytona. On to California.”

BLUE COLLAR MAN: Erb grabs first DIRTcar Nationals win at Volusia

The Carpentersville, IL driver held off a hard-charging Chase Junghans for his 10th career Series triumphBARBERVILLE, FL – February 18, 2022 – NASCAR Cup Series Champion Alan Kulwicki once said, “In every aspect of life, have a game plan and do your best to achieve it.” Dennis Erb Jr. knew he had to master Turns 1 and 2 if he wanted a gator. He wasted no time executing his game plan, thundering past Frank Heckenast Jr. in the middle of the Volusia Speedway Park surface.  It’s a lead he’d never relinquish—fending off challenges from Brandon Sheppard and Chase Junghans to score his first World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Models win of 2022 Friday night at DIRTcar Nationals. “I mean, we were able to get the lead and roll off through that middle on the start,” Erb said. “We kept going real good and had a good start. After that, the car was working good, and we just had to keep hitting our marks and keep the rest of them behind us.” The path toward his 10th career Series triumph in his 250th start wasn’t clear for the Late Model veteran. Erb and defending champion Brandon Sheppard gave the fans at “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile” an epic battle for the lead around the Feature’s halfway point.  The reigning champion swung high while Erb held his ground on the bottom, gaining enough momentum to pull ahead as a caution came out on Lap 25.  “I saw him out there and started to get a little worried,” Erb said. “I started to try and carry a little more speed through [Turns} 1 and 2. I knew [Sheppard] was pretty much committed up there, so I knew if I could beat him on the bottom, we were in pretty good shape.”  Sheppard faded to fourth at the checkered flag. The four-time Series champion stated he stayed on the top side of the racetrack for too long after Erb pulled away.  “[Erb] was swinging out a little bit wider after he knew I was there,” Sheppard said. “I stayed out there a little bit too long after he got out there ahead of me. I should’ve moved down behind him and kept my left rear tire underneath me.   “Instead, I stayed a little too long, and then I overheated it. I was trying to move around, and it wasn’t as good. After a couple of guys got by me, I was able to get down there and cool my left rear tire off, and I drove back to them.”  Sheppard wasn’t the only driver who tried to dethrone Erb from the lead. Chase Junghans quickly closed on the top spot in the final laps but fell short.   The Manhattan, KS driver used patience early in the race before unleashing speed toward the end.  “I just bided my time and tried not to blow my tires off this thing and keep it under me,” Junghans said. “Those lap cars kind of got in the way at the end, but that’s how it goes. Luckily, we’re just up here getting interviewed.” Once Junghans saw Sheppard’s line ahead of him, his decision to go to the outside paid off, leading to his first podium finish of the season. “I saw Sheppard running the top, and I was like kind of pinching the corner on the bottom,” Junghans said. “So, I said screw it, I’ll go up there, and kind of follow him. I chose his line a little bit, but I’d kind of turn off the top and try to drive straight down the hill, and it seemed like that’s where I’d gain a bunch of ground.” Three-time Series Champion Darrell Lanigan finished third for the second straight night. The Union, KY driver’s car came to life in the final 15 laps, leading him to another top three. “We just gave it all we got,” Lanigan said. “We had a little bit of a chance there, and it was coming back to us a little bit. We just got up on the wheel and tried to make something happen. “I just can’t run where I want to on the racetrack yet, and if we get our car right, I think we’ll be able to run up front.”  Dale McDowell, the leading World of Outlaws CASE Late Models winner in 2022, rounded out the top five.  Dennis Erb Jr.’s game plan worked to perfection Friday night, proving a good start can lead to glory on the racetrack. It’s a start that could position him toward a run at a championship at the end of the season.  UP NEXT: The battle for the “Big Gator” trophy ends Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park in a 40 lap, $10,000-to-win finale. For Tickets: CLICK HERE. The Super DIRTcar Series will hand out a “Big Gator.”  Devin Moran leads the DIRTcar Nationals standings—37 points ahead of Chris Madden. ROBERT HIGHT AND AUTO CLUB QUICKEST FRIDAY AT NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, Calif. (Feb 18, 2022) – Robert Hight and the Automobile Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS team are the provisional No. 1 qualifiers Friday at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Brittany Force handled the Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac dragster to the No. 3 qualifying position and Austin Prock took Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist to No. 8 while John Force and the PEAK BlueDEF PLATINUM Chevrolet Camaro SS team did not record a time after making contact with the centerline and a timing block.
It should be no surprise that Robert Hight and his Jimmy Prock and Chris Cunningham led Auto Club Chevy team came out of the box swinging for the fences. After pushing the envelope at testing and being the first to lay down a full clean pass, being quickest of the night in their first qualifying attempt at Auto Club Raceway was to be expected. Hight handled his Auto Club Chevy to a stout 3. 3.882-second pass at 330.39 mph to hold off the 18-car Funny Car field.
“I’m very excited. We tested well last week so I couldn’t wait to get here and see if we could do it again at Pomona,” Hight said. “Jimmy Prock – you can tell when he’s confident. He’s not in that box all the time, he’s not making a lot of last-minute changes. He didn’t spend a lot of time back there tweaking things. He just went off what he had from Phoenix when we made a lot of good runs, and I think there’s more left so I’m looking forward to it. We’ve got to get one run at a time and four on Sunday and then we’ll be excited.”
Brittany Force, in her Monster Energy livery, closed out Friday night qualifying with a 3.722-second pass at a 332.10 mph, the fastest pass of the session and third quickest earning her a bonus qualifying point.
“First run of the season back in Pomona and we ran a 3.722 and we picked up a point. That’s a great way to start. We’ll just keep building on it for tomorrow and get ourselves ready for race day,” Force said. “I’m happy to be back with my entire Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team. It’s a new season, it’s a new start, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can do.” Back in competition after nearly two years, Austin Prock, with his stand-out tandem of crew chiefs Joe Barlam and Rahn Tobler, made a promising pass of 3.794-seconds at 289.94 mph after the 2019 rookie of the year had a cylinder out and lifted off the throttle down-track.
“Overall, a pretty good start to the weekend. It’s been a while since I’ve driven one of these things, and this is the shortest shut down on the circuit, so you have to make sure you have the laundry out on time,” Prock said. “I lifted just at the 660-foot count so we were down on ET and mph a little bit but it was actually a blessing in disguise because we kicked the rods out of the thing. If we wouldn’t have had it drop a hole a 500-feet, it probably wouldn’t have flushed the bones out of it. Tomorrow we’ll have a decent baseline and go from there.”
Things got loose down track for John Force and the BlueDEF PLATINUM Chevy team. After leaving the starting line clean, the Chevy hotrod made a move to the centerline, crossing over and hitting a timing block, disqualifying his run.
“Well made a mess of that. It was moving all over the place. Luckily, we have two more runs tomorrow and we’ll make them count. I’m just glad to be back in a PEAK Chevy, glad to be starting the season,” said Force. “This BlueDEF team is working hard, we’ll be okay. Danny Hood, Tim Fabrisi, we’re looking good for this year. All of us are. Robert quickest with Auto Club, Brittany running good over there with Monster and the Prock kid getting things done with Montana Brand and Rocky Mountain Twist.”
Qualifying at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona continues Saturday with sessions at 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. Eliminations are slated for Sunday at 11 a.m. Television coverage of the season opening event will be aired on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) with a qualifying show on Sunday at 7 a.m. ET and eliminations on Sunday at 10 p.m. ET.

BRITTANY FORCE AND MONSTER ENERGY PICKING UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF AT NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 17, 2022) – Coming off a second place finish for the 2021 NHRA Camping World championship, Brittany Force and the Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac Top Fuel dragster team have some unfinished business as they head to the season-opening Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
Crew chiefs David Grubnic and Mac Savage took full advantage of testing at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park just outside of Phoenix. They tested various engine combinations looking to add to the performance they had in 2021. With nine planned shutoff attempts that showed quality early numbers including .816-seconds at 60 ft. and 2.075 at 330 ft, the Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team are sure to be championship frontrunners.
“There’s a lot of momentum going into this season. We got to put a number two on our car. That number two, I’m very proud of that,” said Force. “This Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team worked hard to get there – it wasn’t easy. Based off how we did last season, we feel good coming into this season. We have a strong team, strong car. We have two new additions to the team, and out at testing, they’ve done great, so I’m excited to see what we can do.”
Force has been the No. 1 qualifier each of the last two years at the Winternationals event and is the track record holder for speed at 336.23 mph (Feb. 9, 2020). She is trying this year to become the fifth different John Force Racing team driver to win the season-opener after her dad John Force, her sister Courtney, Robert Hight and Tony Pedregon. Force is competing for her first win at the season opener but has a notable win at the season-ending Auto Club Finals at Pomona from 2017, her championship year.
“I’m excited to be back at Pomona. The off-season went by quick, but that’s what we want,” Force said. “We’re ready to get back out there with our team and our car doing what we love. And we’re hoping to start the season strong – chase down that number one qualifier and go out on race day, go some rounds and win this thing.”
Qualifying at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona begin Friday with a session at 4:30 p.m. before continuing Saturday with sessions at 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. Eliminations are slated to start Sunday at 11 a.m. Television coverage of the season opening event will be aired on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) and begin with two qualifying shows, Friday at 10 p.m. ET and Sunday at 7 a.m. ET, while eliminations will be on Sunday at 10 p.m. ET.

ROBERT HIGHT AND AUTO CLUB MORE THAN READY FOR NHRA SEASON OPENING WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, Calif. (Feb 17, 2022) – There are few teams in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series that are more eager for the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals and the start of the 2022 season than the Automobile Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS of Robert Hight. Despite a 2021 season that consisted of two wins and two No. 1 qualifying positions, Hight, an intense competitor, was not satisfied with the No. 8 finishing position.  At pre-season testing outside of Phoenix, the Auto Club team made a statement as the first to make a full pass at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. The championship crew chief tandem of Jimmy Prock and Chris Cunningham wasted no time going to 1,000 feet in 3.911-seconds at 323.11 mph in their first attempt on Thursday morning. The three-day performance from the Auto Club team was nothing but promising heading into the Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. “We’re definitely ready to get the season started. We didn’t like how we left things at the end of last year and we’re ready to start the fight to make sure that doesn’t happen again,” said Hight. “This Auto Club team has been working hard all off-season, we put in the work at testing and now it’s time to really get going, we’re ready to get this season started.” Hight has taken the Auto Club Chevy Funny Car to six final rounds in 17 career appearances at the Winternationals with wins in 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2019. He started from the No. 1 position in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2019 and, in addition to his four wins, was runner-up in 2007 and 2018. Hight is also the track record holder for Funny Car speed at 336.99 mph (Feb. 11, 2018). “I love coming to Pomona. Start of the season, Winternationals, clean slate, it’s a home race for John Force Racing and we’re at an Auto Club track,” said Hight. “I’m ready to start racing, get in the Auto Club Chevy and start competing. Jimmy Prock and Chris Cunningham, I know they’re ready too, they really poured themselves into this car over the break. Time to put it all together and see what happens. I’m definitely excited.” Qualifying at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona begin Friday with a session at 4:30 p.m. before continuing Saturday with sessions at 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. ET.

JOHN FORCE AND PEAK / BLUEDEF ENTER NHRA WINTERNATIONALS READY TO SET THE TONE FOR 2022 SEASON

POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 17, 2022) – Starting his 47th year on the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series tour, John Force, the 16-time champion and 154 event-winner, has nothing left to prove, except that he still loves it. Force and his PEAK / BlueDEF PLATINUM Chevrolet Camaro SS team enter the season opening Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals after surging to three wins and a fifth-place finish in 2021, a position they intend to improve on in 2022.
At pre-season testing outside of Phoenix, Force led his four-car team with a series of four back-to-back runs in the 3.8s over the final two days of testing. The Danny Hood and Tim Fabrisi tuned PEAK BlueDEF team laid down a 3.889-second pass at 321.88 mph on Friday followed by a 3.888 at 327.51. The momentum continued into Saturday with an impressive 3.836 at 335.4 Saturday morning and, in the heat of the day, a 3.890 at 326.16 to close out their test session.
“It was great being back out at testing. Back with that PEAK BlueDEF team and Danny Hood and Tim Fabrisis. It has me excited for this season,” said Force. ‘We ran really well, consistent and that’s what we’re looking for with this Chevy hotrod. I’m feeling like everything is getting figured. Great to have Austin Prock back with Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist, Brittany looks good with Monster and Flav-R-Pac, Robert with Auto Club and bringing on Powers Solar. I just can’t wait to race. It’s why I’m here. I just love it.”
Coming to a racetrack where no one has won more races than him, Force has every reason to be excited. Force has raised the trophy 16 times overall on the track he calls home, seven times in the Winternationals (1991, 1993, 1997, 2002, 2010, 2012 and 2014), eight times in the Auto Club Finals and once in a special event, the NHRA’s 50th Anniversary race contested in 2001. His record at the Winternationals also includes four runner-up finishes, the most recent in 2020, and 10 No. 1 qualifiers. The only event in which he has more No. 1 starts is the U.S. Nationals (12).
“This place is home. It’s my history. I grew up here,” Force said. “I love racing at Auto Club Raceway. We get things started here and then we wrap them up here. We haven’t had a chance to do that the last couple years so this feels good, feels normal. I’m excited. I’m looking to get this PEAK BlueDEF Chevrolet in the winners circle, get the season started off right.”
ET.

Austin Dillon and the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops / TRACKER Off Road Chevrolet Team Lead Laps and Show Speed in Duel at Daytona

18th10thN/A
“I was hoping we could defend our duel win from last year tonight but we kept our Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Off Road Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 undamaged, and that is a win in itself. We didn’t have much help during the race, but we were able to work with my brother, Ty Dillon, quite a bit and really learned a lot that we can apply to the DAYTONA 500 on Sunday. It was good to lead a few laps in our Chevy. We didn’t get enough fuel during our green-flag stop so we had to make a second stop late in the race, and ended up 18th. Overall, I think we have a hot rod and I’m excited for Sunday’s DAYTONA 500!”

Tyler Reddick and the No. 8 3CHI Chevrolet Team Find Speed, Stay Consistent in Duel at Daytona
8th8thN/A
“It was a productive night for our No. 8 3CHI Chevrolet. I feel like our car has got good speed. We’re able to make pretty good moves whenever we need to but it certainly seems like the nature of the draft is going to turn out to be quite different than what us drivers are used to. We’re going to spend tonight, tomorrow leading into practice and the practice on Saturday breaking it down and trying to figure out what our approach needs to be so that when it comes time to drop the green flag on Sunday for the DAYTONA 500 we’re going to do the best thing for speed and the best thing for our race in general. We’ve got work to do but we’ve got the best people around to do it. I’ve got a great teammate in Austin Dillon and great companions in our satellite organizations so I’m looking forward to working with them as well to have a successful race on Sunday. I can’t wait to see our 3CHI Chevy on track, it’s going to be a good one!”

RETURN OF THE MAC: McDowell Scores Second World of Outlaws Win of 2022 at Volusia

Devin Moran grabs fourth straight podium finish, leads Big Gator Points

BARBERVILLE, FL– February 17, 2022 – Only one word describes Dale McDowell’s 2022 season—emotional.

Less than a month after the Chickamauga, GA driver opened the season with a win at Sunshine Nationals, he backed it up with another one Thursday night at Volusia Speedway Park.

McDowell outran Devin Moran and Darrell Lanigan in the final 10 laps to earn his first Gator trophy since 2018. Tears fell from the “Mac Daddy’s” eyes in Victory Lane, at a loss for words for his recent accomplishments—including his triumph against cancer.

“We came down here in January to see if we were worthy of coming back, and it’s been a dream come true,” McDowell said.

The veteran driver earned a $10,000 check and his 14th career World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Model Series win, tying him for 14th all-time with Tim Fuller.

Despite his success in 2022, it’s a position McDowell never thought he’d be in after his off-track battle.

“I’ve been through a lot, and I have a lot of help behind me and support,” McDowell said. “It’s pretty emotional because I’ve been through a good bit, but I’m just happy to be here.”

While McDowell held the lead in the final 21 laps, Rookie of the Year contender Kyle Hammer led the first 19.

The Clinton, IL driver lost the lead to McDowell on a Lap 20 restart and dropped back to fifth before spinning in Turns 3 and 4, ending his night.

Even though he finished 27th, Hammer gained a boost of confidence racing against some of the top Late Model drivers in the country.

“We started really bad here in the beginning of the week,” Hammer said. “So, to be able to come where we were to here is just awesome for our team, a huge confidence booster.

“I feel like we actually know what we’re doing in the slick now.”

Devin Moran crossed the line second, earning his fourth DIRTcar Nationals podium. The “Mailman” leads the battle for a “Big Gator” trophy but wants a little gator to go with it. He stated he needed to start closer to the front to do that.

“We found some stuff in our Heat Race, and I felt like we were really, really good,” Moran said. “We’ll put that in our Qualifying setup tomorrow and hopefully start on the front row of the [Heat Race], and maybe we can start up front in one of these Features.

“We may not have passed the best car, but we’ve passed plenty of cars this week. We’ll just keep after it.”

Darrell Lanigan crossed the line third after starting 12th. The three-time Series champion stated he’s improving each night, especially in his ability to drive through the field.

“We’ve got our car close now,” Lanigan said. “It’s pretty balanced when we can drive in traffic.”

Chris Madden finished fourth, adding to his Series points lead—12 points ahead of McDowell. It’s the Gray Court, SC driver’s third top-five in four races. And 2021 World of Outlaws CASE Late Models Rookie of the Year Tyler Bruening rounded out the top five.

Dale McDowell’s 2022 season has been an emotional ride he never expected. “The Mac Daddy” is taking things one race at a time, embracing every win as it comes.

“I’m just completely blessed,” McDowell said.

UP NEXT: The World of Outlaws CASE Late Models return to Volusia Speedway Park for another day of action at DIRTcar Nationals along with the Super DIRTcar Series.

Massive week of fan activities, racing planned for historic 50th NAPA Super DIRT Week

‘Racing’s Biggest Party’ is set for its biggest year yet as the celebration continues each month, including a 50th Super DIRT Week trophy tour

OSWEGO, NY – Feb. 18, 2022 – Momentum for one of the most historic weeks in dirt Modified history is already building as NAPA Super DIRT Week celebrates its 50th anniversary in October at Oswego Speedway. The special week comes with a refined schedule loaded with new and exciting elements for fans and drivers.

From Sunday to Sunday, Oct. 2-9, a plethora of activities for fans has been planned throughout the City of Oswego, amongst the races for the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds, DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, DIRTcar Sportsman and DIRTcar Pro Stock.

One of the biggest updates for the 50th-anniversary event is adjusting the times and days for the four division’s main events. The Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds and DIRTcar Sportsman will race on Sunday, with the Billy Whittaker Cars 200 starting at 5pm (ET). The DIRTcar 358 Modifieds and the DIRTcar Pro Stocks will run on Saturday under the lights, with the Salute to the Troops 150 starting at 6pm. The divisions have also been grouped together during the week for their practice, time trials and qualifying heat races.

While the first pages of the Super DIRT Week history book were written in 1972 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse with Big Block Modifieds, Racing’s Biggest Party is set to be the biggest ever in 2022 at Oswego Speedway – including a charity golf tournament, parties led by a DJ every night from Wednesday to Saturday at the Island Stage just outside the pits plus live entertainment on Saturday, huge fireworks on Friday, and the fan-favorite autograph session with the Top 30 qualifiers on Sunday.

In addition, past champions will also be honored during the event, with a special race and autograph session on Thursday, Oct. 6, following qualifying for DIRTcar 358 Modifieds and Pro Stocks. More details on this event will be revealed as the date draws closer.

Also, throughout the season, a new custom 50th NAPA Super DIRT Week Billy Whittaker Cars 200 trophy will tour the State of New York with the 50th anniversary Ford Mustang Pace Car for fans to see.

The celebration for the 50th NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week is already well underway. Every Wednesday leading up to the event week in October, a driver is revealed from the fan-voted list of the Top 50 Greatest Super DIRT Week Drivers. So far, 17 drivers have already been made public at SuperDIRTWeek.com.
