Menard Expecting A Hot Day At Dover

Menard Expecting A Hot Day At Dover

May 1, 2019

After two short track races, with a mile-and-a-half race at Texas Motor Speedway sandwiched in between, followed by a run on the superspeedway at Talladega, Paul Menard and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team get to try something altogether different this weekend.

The 11th Monster Energy Cup Series race of 2019 will be contested on the high-banked, one-mile concrete oval at Dover International Speedway. And Sunday’s Gander RV 400 will be the first race at Dover since NASCAR instituted its new lower horsepower/higher downforce handling package. Continue reading Menard Expecting A Hot Day At Dover

Menard Overcomes Early Setback To Finish 16th At Talladega

Menard Overcomes Early Setback To Finish 16th At Talladega

April 28, 2019

Paul Menard and his No. 21 Quick Lane team spent most of Sunday’s GEICO 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway battling back from damage to the nose of the No. 21 Mustang from a chain-reaction fender bender during a Lap 10 crash. The Quick Lane crew used numerous pit stops to repair the damage, and when the laps wound down, Menard found himself back up to speed and squarely in the middle of the race for the win.

With 30 of 188 laps remaining Menard made his strongest charge of the day, drafting his way to as high as second place on Lap 170.

He was sixth in line for a restart with four laps to go but wound up getting stuck behind Kyle Busch, who was slow getting up to speed on the restart.

With no room to get around Busch, Menard fell to the back of the lead pack but had worked his way back to 16th place when the caution flag flew for a multi-car crash on the backstretch, freezing the field at that point.

Eddie Wood said he was proud of the way that Menard, crew chief Greg Erwin and the over-the-wall crew responded to the early set-back.

“They made adjustments on the chassis to compensate for the damage to the nose of the car, but that wasn’t a long-term fix because it adversely affected the handling of the car,” Wood said. “Greg and the crew used nearly every pit stop after that to get the car fixed. Between the repairs and adjustments to the chassis, by the end of the race the car was good to go.”

Wood also expressed praise for Menard, who had to start from the rear each time the crew used extra time on pit road to work on the car but still drove his way back to the top 10, and did so under stressful conditions.

“Driving 200 miles per hour for 500 miles is commendable for Paul and for all the drivers out there,” Wood said. “We didn’t quite get the finish that Paul and the team deserved but I’m very happy with all their efforts.”

Menard and the No. 21 team will return to the track next week at Dover International Speedway.

Paul Menard and the No. 21 Quick Lane Mustang are set to start Sunday’s GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway from 17th place.

Menard earned that spot in qualifying on Saturday with a best lap at 189.921 miles per hour.

With a new rules package in place for Sunday’s 100th Cup race at the giant Alabama track, Menard and his peers have spent Friday and Saturday fine-tuning their cars for a race that still has many unknowns when it comes to how the cars will react in the draft with every car on the track at the same time. Paul Menard Finishes 10th at Richmond

Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Maytag team backed up their sixth-place finish at Bristol Motor Speedway a week ago by scoring a 10th-place finish on Saturday night at Richmond Raceway, which in recent seasons hasn’t been one of their best tracks.

Menard’s finish, coupled with three Stage points earned by finishing in the top 10 of both 100-lap Stages, moved him up three spots in the championship standings to 16th place. That puts him, for now, in the elite 16 that will compete for the championship in the 10-race, season-ending Playoffs. Continue reading Paul Menard Finishes 10th at Richmond

Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Maytag team found some of the Richmond speed they’d been seeking and came away with the 13th starting spot for Saturday night’s 400-lapper on the ¾-mile Richmond Raceway.

Menard started Friday at Richmond by posting the 19th fastest lap in practice with a best lap at 120.246 miles per hour.

Menard Hoping Mid-Week Work Leads To Speed At Richmond

Menard Hoping Mid-Week Work Leads To Speed At Richmond

April 11, 2019
Like many a school kid returning to school after spring break, Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Maytag team will be hitting the books this week as they prepare for Saturday night’s 400-lapper at Richmond Raceway.

Menard and the team are coming off their season-best performance in which they finished sixth in last Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

And while Richmond falls in the same short-track category as Bristol, the similarities pretty much end there.

“It’s a totally different track,” Menard said.

For whatever reason, both he and his Wood Brothers team tend to struggle at Richmond. Menard, who has seven career top-10 finishes at Bristol, has just one at Richmond. The Woods have 26 top-10s at Bristol and 19 at Richmond.

Menard said he and the team plan to spend the week looking over notes from previous races and processing other data in hopes of reversing their Richmond fortunes.

“Bristol is one of our better tracks and Richmond is one of our worse tracks, so we’re going do a lot of studying this week,” he said.

Menard is hoping track officials don’t complicate matters more by applying PJ1 traction compound to the racing surface as was done with success at Bristol this past week.

“I don’t know if they’re going to lay any PJ1 down for that track,” he said. “I hope they don’t for that track. It widens out as it is.”

Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Sylvania team hope to build on their speed from 2018 at Bristol Motor Speedway as they prepare for this weekend’s Food City 500 at the high-banked Tennessee track.

Crew chief Greg Erwin said he plans to begin Friday’s practice with a set-up on the No. 21 Mustang similar to the one the team employed last year when Menard qualified seventh for the spring race and fourth for the summer event. Menard was running third last spring when the race was halted due to weather and resumed the next day under different weather conditions that adversely affected the handling of the No. 21. Martinsville Speedway Is A Special Place For The Wood Brothers

Martinsville Speedway Is A Special Place For The Wood Brothers

March 19, 2019

Martinsville Speedway, the smallest track on NASCAR’s Cup circuit, holds a big place in the hearts of the Wood Brothers, whose home base is just 30 miles away in Stuart, Va.

For seven decades, the Woods have been competing in races at Martinsville, where the team’s current driver Paul Menard and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane crew will be competing in the STP 500 on Sunday.

The team’s founder, the late Glenn Wood, made his first start in the series now known as Monster Energy Cup on the half-mile at Martinsville in 1953, in a Lincoln numbered 21. Continue reading Martinsville Speedway Is A Special Place For The Wood Brothers

A late-race pit strategy didn’t work out for Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Moen team, and as a result, the team ended Sunday’s Auto Club 400 in 20th place.

Menard, who started the race from 25th place, had worked his way up to just outside the top 10 just after the end of the second 60-lap Stage. Continue reading After Disappointing Finish at Fontana, The No. 21 Team Heads Home To Pay Tribute To Team Founder Glenn Wood

Menard Ready For Some Rim Riding At Fontana

March 13, 2019

For Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Moen team, Sunday’s Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., will be like a mix of racing at Atlanta and Las Vegas.

Sunday’s 400-miler, the fifth race of the 2019 Monster Energy Cup Series season, will be run using the high downforce/lower horsepower package that was in place two weeks ago at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. But the track, with its worn asphalt, is expected to produce results more like the second race of the season, on the excessively worn pavement at Atlanta Motor Speedway. At Atlanta, the cars did not run the aero ducts that were used at Las Vegas and will be in place at Auto Club, and tire wear was a big factor. February 27, 2019

Phase Two of NASCAR’s new intermediate track handling package for Monster Energy Cup Series cars kicks in this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and Paul Menard and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team are among those wondering how the racing will be once a full field of cars is on the track.

At Atlanta Motor Speedway, portions of the new lower horsepower/higher downforce package were introduced. This week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will see the addition of aero ducts that transfer air to the side of the car away from the front tires, a feature that will be seen at several other tracks as well.
